and heartbreakfor scotland — as they miss out on a place in the knockout stage of the cricket world cup — as england scape through, thanks to australia. welcome along, thank you forjoining us this sunday night. england's opening match at euro 2024 is approaching in germany. at the last championship they reached the final, falling short at wembley on penalties — can they go one better this time? serbia are their opponents in gelsenkirchen for their first group game. here's our sports correspondent andy swiss.
7:33 pm
# sweet caroline... lunchtime in gelsenkirchen and england fans were already making themselves heard. as they flocked, full of euros confidence. we're going to win it. it's coming home. it has to be our year, this year. we say it every time! can't wait to get and that ground, scream my heart out can't wait to get in that ground, scream my heart out and hopefully not lose my voice. do you think england will win the euros? of course. it's our time, it's our time. it's coming home! # and the raf from england shot them down... among the chants was one referencing germany's wartime past which the authorities have urged fans not to sing. but for most supporters, the mood was one of excitement. we can hear the atmosphere here in gelsenkirchen. organisers say they expect about 40,000 england fans here. after months of build—up, it's finally time for england to start. they'll begin as clear favourites against serbia, a side ranked just 33rd in the world. england, remember, reached

the final of the last euros. so, can their players handle the pressure and go all the way? they understand that because we've been doing well and because we've won a lot of games and we have gone into a lot of depth in tournaments, then of course expectation has risen. but qualification from the group is the only objective at this point. then, you build from there. security is tight in this match, which the authorities have deemed high risk. but for england fans, the waiting is almost over and their euros, about to begin. andy swiss, bbc news, gelsenkirchen. they certainly are with 25 minutes to go. they certainly are with 25 minutes to go. let's go live to gelsenkirchen now. andy swiss is in position. we've had the teen using. no major

particularly here in gelsenkirchen, because this match has been rated a high risk match by the authority, partly because of fears of violence from serbian hooligans. more than 1000 police officers are here on duty. i was in the town earlier on. the atmosphere was pretty good among the england fans, but since then, there have been some disturbances in there have been some disturbances in the town centre. gelsenkirchen police have issued a statement saying there was an altercation between england and serbia fans earlier. they say seven serbian fans were arrested. it is important to say that british police say that at this stage we do not believe any new 93)’ this stage we do not believe any new gay nationals have been arrested. —— any uk nationals have been arrested. there have been a few transport issues with still a lot of fans arriving here at the moment, but people will be keeping their fingers crossed that this match passes off smoothly. crossed that this match passes off smoothl . , . ., ,

7:39 pm
you flip between the two people. these boys have grown up supporting england, watching these tournaments. at the same time, they are hard, very high—level professional footballers. you flip between the two. you understand what's going on around you, the family, friends, the buzz, but the same time, they have a job to do, and as the game comes closer, that will be the focus. tell us, the fans will be expected, but the players genuinely believe that they can do it, and rightly so, having made the final of the last euros, when they lost to italy. do you think england will get over the line at long last? they will put themselves in the best position. there is no getting away with it, they have one of the best squads in the tournament. they have experience together, and a manager they have worked with for a number of years now. everything is in place, but tournament football is crazy. we need everything to go our way. there will be hard times, we all need to stay together and dig deep, and if all that comes together, then they have a great chance. joe hart, there. the other two teams in england's group are currently facing each other in stuttgart.

denmark famously won the euros in 1992, and they're up against a slovenia side who've not won a match in their history at the european championship. it's a night of special significance for christian eriksen — his first game at the euros since his cardiac arrest in 2021. and what a fairy tale story for him this evening. he scored 16 minutes into the game. the manchester united man putting his side in front. it would for a long time that christian eriksen's strike would be the difference, and it would win it, but what a moment for slovenia late drawing themselves level. it finished i—i. four years before denmark won the euros — it was the netherlands that lifted the trophy in 1988. they're hoping to repeat that achievement in germany — and are one of the tournament favourites. today, in their opening match they survived a scare to see off poland, a late winner ensuring victory as ben croucher reports.
7:41 pm
if you were in hamburg today and you didn't know who was playing, you soon did. wherever the netherlands go, their orange army follows. colourful, loud, some are either prophetic or blindly optimistic. they are supporting a team actually playing in blue. whatever the kit, if you defend corners like this, it will only have one result. commentator: it is there! so, the dutch defenders took it upon themselves to try and rectify matters. virgil van dijk went close, cody gakpo went closer... commentator: gakpo, and the dutch are level! | ..thanks, largely, to a healthy deflection. memphis depay might have wished there was another just before the break. different have come a different player, same angle, different

in garmisch—partenkirchen has now turned to their second match of the euros on wednesday against switzerland. jane dougal*s with the team. it was a very honest steve clarke we heard from earlier. he was very critical of himself, saying he got it wrong against germany. he also said that he knew what he had got wrong. he said it was his job as manager to turn up, to front up to the media, and to answer all of our questions, which he did do. he said that there were no excuses after that very heavy defeat to germany, and that he was still tidying up loose ends after a very bad night. when you lose a game 5—1, you have to take all the criticism that comes. you have to respond. the good thing for me is, been in this position before. it is a roller—coaster of emotions. they understand they have let everybody down. they are disappointed. but they know they have to be ready
7:44 pm
and up to the next game, because that is the nature of being involved in football. clarke said he had listened to a few of the players whose opinion he valued about what they could change for the rest of the tournament. he also said that he was dealing with the players in very different ways, and that he had spoken to them all individually. one of those players, of course, is ryan porteous, who was given a straight red card after his dangerous challenge on ilkay gundogan, which of course led to a penalty against scotland. we know what went wrong. i spoke to the players about what i feel went wrong on my side. kicking a couple of backsides, giving a couple of cuddles. you said not to be too tough on ryan porteous. he will be properly the toughest on himself. how do you manage that? he was one of my cuddles. that is basically it.
7:45 pm
he was one of those i spoke to, and said it wasn't a good look. ryan didn't want to meet that challenge, he wanted to stop a goal. you just have a little chat to him. he is very down at this stage, as you would expect. scotland's next match is against switzerland on wednesday. clarke said that granit xhaka was one of their best players, their captain, their leader. he also described switzerland as a team that could survive in tournaments, but he said he hoped scotland would get it right against them on wednesday, and that switzerland would be the disappointed team. he also said that they have to get four points over the next two matches, and they do if they want to have a good chance of staying in this tournament. i asked clarke if he'd be watching england against serbia. he said he might catch the second half, but that he would be supporting gareth and his boys. jane dougal there. time now to move away from the football and some of the days other stories, and britain's adam yates has won the tour de suisse. he began the 8th and final stage, a mostly uphill time trial,

an early advantage. after half an hour, the former wimbledon finalist had served up a first set lead. draper kept his composure in the second set, taking berrettini to a tie—break, before snatching a mini—break. a point later, and the match was even. draper now one set away from glory. both held their serve, until a sweeping backhand cross—court put the british number one within touching distance. commentator: it is third time lucky forjack draper! _ a first career title forjack draper, one he will hope is just the start. emma raducanu missed out on that final, narrowly beaten by katie boulter. today we've been told that raducanu's turned down the chance to play for great britain at this summer's olympics in paris — but two—time gold medallist andy murray will compete at roland garros. with more, here's our sports news
7:50 pm
correspondent laura scott. the team gb tennis selection for paris 2020 for got people talking, and that is not only because we have andy murray in the team for his fifth olympic games, but because there is no emma raducanu in the list. she wasn't expected to play in paris, but earlier this week was offered a special place by the international tennis federation by virtue of the fact that she won the 2021 us open. she has actually rejected that spot, and while some people might be confused as to why she would do that, ian bates, the team leader, explained that he has had a number of conversations with emma in recent weeks, and it was felt that the change of surface from grass, which she has been playing well on, practically, from grass, which she has been playing well on, back to clay,
7:51 pm
and then to the hard courts in the us swing later in the summer would be difficult for her given her wrist surgery last year. really excited she is back on the court, playing great tennis, and for everybody in british tennis, that is a hugely important thing. the olympics is a fabulous opportunity for every tennis player that gets that opportunity, so it would great if she was there, but i think the logic and the reasoning behind where she is positioned or where she feels right is absolutely sound. undoubtedly the most experienced member of the team gb tennis team is andy murray. this will be his fifth olympic games. he has won two gold medals. one at london 2012, and then at rio 2016 as well. he has done incredibly well at the olympics. it is clearly a special event for him, and he is due to line up in the singles. he has also been nominated to take part in the men's doubles alongside dan evans. he has thrown up a lot of questions about whether he wants to play in paris because it is back on the clay, and it has caused
7:52 pm
issues for his back recently, but i caught up with him earlier, and this is what he had to say. there is more chance of me winning a medal in the doubles than in the singles, and that is why i didn't know for sure if me and dan would get selected. there are other potential teams that might play, but glad we got selected, and the olympics has been amazing over my career. i've loved every one that i've been involved in. results on the courts have varied to winning gold medals and exiting in the first round. looking forward to being part of it again. britain's best chance of a medal in the tennis events is thought to be that ofjoe salisbury and his partner in the men's doubles. it should be a very strong pairing with them. ian bates also think we could have a very good chance in the next doubles,
7:53 pm
though that pairing will be decided until the team arrived in paris. a few more decisions to be taken between now and the games. the international tennis federation will decide if andy murray and dan evans in a couple of the other british parents will take their spot. that is by the end ofjune. for now, all attention is on the grass. it certainly is. following a difficult group stage, england captainjos buttler says it's a big relief after england scraped into the knockout stage of the men's t20 cricket world cup in the caribbean. ironically, they have their fiercest rivals australia to thank — after scotland looked like they were going to upset the status quo, only to fall short. alex fletcher reports. english nerves apparent, their world cup hopes almost washed away in antigua. when play did get started... gone, what a beauty! ..the limited overs did not limit the action. the caps in one of two early wickets to fall. enter harry brooke. bold batting setting the tone for england, top scoring with an unbeaten 47.

namibia needing 126 for victory. a total that ultimately proved beyond them. brooke played his part in the field as england now relied on australia. we have overcome that net run rate and the challenges that have been put in front of us. as a group, we are stuck together tightly. we'll keep an eye on it, of course. at the same time, we have done everything that is in our hands. and so, to saint lucia. scotland hoping to get a tune out of their top order, brandon mcmullen, the one on song. smashing six sixes, as australia were set a target of 481. the early signs were not promising. that is a top delivery! three wickets down, scottish spirit growing, but when all hope looks lost, travis head and marcus stoinis wrestled back momentum.

both hit half—centuries, and winning runs secured with two balls to spare. the reigning champions are through to the super eights. elsewhere pakistan have beaten ireland by 3 wickets in florida. both sides had been eliminated heading into this one. later, bangladesh meet nepal in st vincent and the grenadines. a win for the tigers will see them book their place in the super eights. should they lose, the netherlands can climb above them in the table with victory over a winless sri lanka side in st lucia. that is all from us at the bbc sport centre tonight. a reminder of our top story, it has to be england playing serbia. it is five minutes away from kick—off. you can watch that on bbc one. this is the team sheet, and no major surprises. and the swiss was telling us earlier in the programme, england pretty much as you would expect.

trent alexander—arnold in midfield will be a talking point, as bellingham, saka and foden ahead of him. john stones is fit and raring to go alongside mark guehi, and jordan pickford in goal. denmark slovenia finished 1—1 in that group, so a win for england would take them top. kick—off minutes away, we will keep you updated on bbc*s news. you can watch on bbc one. for me and the team, that is often now. —— all for now. hello there. well, it's been a rather mixed day of weather with some heavy, persistent rain across parts of scotland. heavy thundery showers breaking out mostly across eastern areas of england, but some bright and sunny spells in between. some of the best of that sunshine has been across the south and the west. and of course, it always feels pleasantly warm in the sunshine
7:57 pm
at this time of year. there will be more of it as we head through next week. it's been cool and unsettled of late, but an improvement for most of us, turning warmer and drier. still some wet weather around, though, at times. and overnight tonight, that band of cloud and showery rain will slowly continue to sink further southwards. it's weakening as it goes, and there will be some clear spells to the north and to the south of that front. and any lengthy clear spells temperatures could drop back potentially to mid single figures. so locally, another chilly start to the day tomorrow for some. and then into monday morning. well, it's another day of sunshine and showers. that band of cloud pushes further southwards, but it's weakening, of course, the cloud breaking up in the strong june sunshine. showers developing, particularly to the north and the east of that band of cloud. a cloudy day, really, for northern ireland, but it should stay dry here. and the best of the sunshine, the driest conditions out towards the south east of england. temperatures here could rise as high as 22 degrees celsius, maybe. and then we look out towards the near continent as we go
7:58 pm
through monday night into tuesday to find this weather front that's starting to edge some more cloud into parts of kent and east sussex, perhaps, maybe some showers here, but a lot of uncertainty still at this stage. some more showers developing, i think mostly across northern and eastern areas of england, perhaps into eastern scotland, too. but some bright and some sunny spells. a lot of dry weather, particularly out towards the west. it's warm in the south, temperatures in the low 20s, but cool across northern scotland, still with more of a northerly wind starting to develop. as we go through wednesday, that front towards the south starts to pull away. high pressure edges in from the azores and that's set to keep us largely dry, i think, for much of the rest of the week. still low pressure out towards the north and the west, though, and that's going to send a few weather fronts away. so if we just take a look at the outlook for our capital cities. you can see that temperatures have bounced back to the seasonal average across the board. there could still be some more wet weather across edinburgh and belfast but drier in london and cardiff. bye— bye.
