it's not much of a job. it feels like a pleasure. england are clear at the top of group c after the other game provided the first draw of euro 2024, with slovenia and denmark finishing 1—1 in stuttgart. the first goal of the game was a significant one for cristian erikson in his first match at the tournament since collapsing on the pitch during a game nearly exactly three years ago because of a cardiac arrest. slovenia's equaliser 13 minutes from time came from erikjanza. his shot slightly deflected. denmark meet england in their next game in a repeat of the euro 2020 semi—final. the netherlands made a winning start by beating poland — but onlyjust coming from a goal down to win 2—1 in hamburg. substitute wout weghorst scoring the winner eight minutes from time with his first touch of the match. scotland head coach steve clarke says he's had to "kick a couple of backsides" and "give a couple of cuddles" after his side's humbling 5—1 defeat to hosts germany in the opening game of the tournament on friday. their attention has now turned

to their second match on wednesday against switzerland. jane dougall*s with the team. it was a very honest steve clarke that we heard from earlier. he was very critical of himself, saying that he got it wrong against germany. he also said that he knew what he had got wrong. he said that it was his job as manager to turn up to front up to the media and to answer all of our questions, which he did do. he said that there were no excuses after that very heavy defeat to germany and that he was still tidying up loose ends after a very bad night. when you lose a game 5—1, you have to take all the criticism that comes. you have to respond. the good thing for me is, been in this position before, it's a roller—coaster of emotions. they understand they've let everybody down. they're disappointed. but they know they have to be ready and up for the next game because that's the nature of being involved in football. clark said that he had listened to a few of the players whose

opinions that he valued about what they could change for the rest of the tournament. he also said that he was dealing with the players in very different ways, and that he had spoken to them all individually. one of those players, of course, is ryan porteous, who was given a straight red card after his dangerous challenge on ilkay gundogan, which of course, led to a penalty against scotland. we know what went wrong. i spoke to the players about what i feel was wrong from my side. kicking a couple of backsides. giving a couple of cuddles. you said not to be too tough on ryan porteous. he will probably be the toughest on himself. how do you manage that? he was one of my cuddles. basically that's it. he was one of the ones that speak to officer explaining the situation. it doesn't look good. it's not a good look. ryan didn't want to make that challenge. he wanted to stop a goal. so you just have a little chat with him. he's very down, as you would expect. scotland's next match is against switzerland

on wednesday. clark said that granit xhaka was probably one of their best players, their captain, their leader, and he said that he was one to watch for wednesday. he also described switzerland as a team that could survive in tournaments, but he said that he hoped that scotland would get it right against them on wednesday and that switzerland would be the disappointed team. he also said that they have to get four points over the next two matches, and they do if they want to have a good chance of staying in this tournament. i asked clark if he would be watching england against serbia. he said he might catch the second half, but that he would be supporting gareth and his boys. bryson dechambeau has won the us open, byjust a single shot from rory mcilroy. his final round of 71 was enough to claim the title at pinehurst in north carolina. the american won this tournament in 2020 and this is his second major title.
1:53 am

the chance to play for great britain at this summer's olympics in paris. given her injury issues raducanu said she thought it was "not necessary" to put her body through switching surfaces. however two—time gold—medallist andy murray will compete for team gb at roland garros. i've had amazing experiences and memories from wimbledon, but also, you know, being part of british olympic, british olympic teams. and to get the chance to be involved in a fifth one, you know, as you know, is a reason to stay motivated and continue playing. pakistan have ended their t20 world cup campaign with a win, albeit not a particularly mood—changing one. they beat ireland, with both having been eliminated at the group stage. ireland were 3—4 at one stage having been put into bat in florida. shaheen shah afridi took three wickets and after having a wobble on their way to chasing down 107 to win the bowler struck two crucial sixes late in the game with the bat as he and captain babar azam helped pakistan to a three—wicket win.

you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. you can get reaction to the growth and it euros tournament three days into the tournament. that's it from sportsday. thank you for watching. goodbye. hello. sunday was a day of contrasts. we had some warmer weather than we've had for nearly two weeks where the sun shone — 22 degrees in southern areas — that's average, but a cool 12 degrees under that band of cloud and rain. now, that band of cloud and rain is all associated with this area of low pressure, which has been around since friday. thursday, friday, infact, it's sinking southwards — the band of rain — as the low pressure starts to pull away. so we will find that it turns a little lighter, the rain, as it drifts
1:56 am
its way southwards, but still a few heavy bursts on it, a lot of cloud and some mistiness over the hills. to the north of that, a few showers, but quite cool forjune and cool in southern areas. first thing might be a little bit of dawn mist, but some sunshine. now, gradually through the day, that band of rain will sink southwards and start to break up. so allowing some drier, brighter weather, but could be the focal point for some of the heavy showers, rumbles the of thunder, and there will be quite a cluster of showers following on behind to scotland, northern ireland. but in contrast to sunday, temperatures will get to around about 17 or 18, and still pretty warm further south. and those sorts of temperatures around about the average. it's not promised to dry — there'll still be a good scattering of heavy showers around — but at least with the strong june sunshine in between, we are seeing temperatures or realising temperatures where they should be for the time of year. but a subtle change to the northerly again across the northern half of the uk through sunday night and into — sorry — through monday night and into tuesday. and so it will be again a tad on the cool side tuesday morning. but we're watching developments also in the south.
1:57 am
later monday and into tuesday, this could brush, certainly cloud if not rain across the channel islands into the south of england. but this ridge of high pressure through the week should keep many places drier than they have been for a while and allow some more sunshine, so it'll feel warmer. but you can see the potential for the blanket of cloud across southern areas, possibly some rain. showers still with us, particularly in central and northern areas, one or two heavy ones as well on that northerly breeze. so it could actually be a bit cooler on tuesday again for northern scotland, but again, not too bad — temperatures getting to around the average for the time of year. and that's the way it's set to stay for the rest of the week, but certainly not promising it dry. there'll be some showers around and that risk of rain both for the north and the far south. so you can, as ever, stay up to date on the website. but it does look a little drier and a little warmer as we go through this week.
