along the way. the bigger the star, the bigger the close—up. the focus is always on killie and mbappe, as a global icon the france captain's every move is watched. it's another thing trying to keep up with him. austria escaped but they had the capacity to do more than survive. the austrians have been on good form and here for christophe baumgartner, a great chance. and maihnan did his job superbly! a sliding doors moment, because in a blink of the match moved on, mbappe moved on, mesmerisingly. oh, it's an own goal, france have taken the lead! typical, magical, a conjuring trick that made poor max verber the stooge. it is easy for mbappe to be taken for granted, so when he got away here everyone knew what would happen
2:46 am
next until somehow it didn't. and misses, goodness me! so for didier deschamps, this was uncomfortable, and for mbappe, less so. his nose felt the force of trying to score a second. eventually, he went off. that would be their last problem, though. les bleus are on their way. this was not spectacular, but for this much fancied france, it is a start. patrick geary, bbc news. well, france captain kylian mbappe came off towards the end of the match, after suffering a suspected broken nose. he collided with austria defender, kevin danso, whilst trying to win a header, and left the pitch covered in blood. france manager didier deschamps says he's "not doing well" and described the injury as "very worrying". france will of course hope it does not keep him out of action for too long, with two more group games still to go. there's been a huge upset in group e, where slovakia beat belgium 1—0 in frankfurt. belgium began the stronger, but against the run of play, ivan shranz capitalised
2:47 am
on a mistake from jeremy doku after seven minutes. belgium's all—time record goal scorer romelu lukaku was then to have two goals ruled out by var — the second when a handball was detected in the build—up. a minor touch — handball nonetheless. a losing start, then, for belgium boss domenico tedesco, who refuses to blame doku for his error. the mistake, yes, of course, it hurts for him, it hurts for me, for the team, because he is not deserving that, but it's part of the game, you know? in football, you would not score any goals without errors. it is part of the game and it can happen. also slovakia did many errors tonight. that's why we had to score, and then it's no problem. we speak now probably a little bit more about this error because it is the decisive goal, yeah. there was also a surprise in the opening match of the day, as romania
2:48 am
beat ukraine, 3—0. nicolae stanciu put romania 1—0 up, with this brilliant strike on the half—hour mark. razvan marin and denis dragus were also on the scoresheet. romania had failed to win their opening game in any of their previous five appearances at the euros, so plenty to celebrate for the team and their fans. well, on display in munich where that match took place, are damaged seats from ukraine's sonyachny stadium in khakiv. kharkiv. the stadium was destroyed by russian troops, following their invasion of ukraine in 2022. the damaged stand, built for euro 2012, was presented in the city centre by former ukraine striker, andriy shevchenko. now, away from the euros, following on from emma raducanu's decision not to play at the olympics this summer, world number three aryna sabalenka and two—time wimbledon finalist ons jabeur have also both announced they wont be playing in paris.
2:49 am
sabalenka, from belarus, says there's too much tennis in her schedule. she retained her australian open title injanuary, but lost in the french open quarter finals. athletes from russia and belarus who qualify for the games, can only compete as neutrals in paris, following russia's invasion of ukraine. meanwhile, world number ten jabeur says she has concerns over how her body would adapt to the clay surface being used at the olympics. she's currently playing on the grass and will then compete on hard courts at the us open. jabeur has previously represented tunisia at the 2012 and 2016 olympics, and the covid—delayed tokyo games in 2021. cameron norrie's disappointing form continues, after a first—round defeat on the grass at queens. he went down in three sets to canada's milos raonic. norrie, who was replaced as british number one on monday by jack draper, had two match points of his own in the third set tie breaker. but, raonic came through, 11—9. the former wimbledon finalist, who's only played four

tournaments this year, served 47 aces in the win — a new atp record in three—set matches. i got lucky to get through. obviously, the serve helped me a lot today. it's good to be back playing here in queens. it has been i think five or six years since i played here last time, so, for me, to be able to enjoy these kind of tight moments, even though they are not always fun going through them in the moment, it is the thing that is the most exciting about competing and being back on court. meanwhile, andy murray is predicting that jack draper could go on to become world number one, after he won his first atp tour title, beating the former wimbledon finalist matteo berretini, to lift the trophy at the stuttgart open. he's now the highest—ranked british player, just outside the top 30, and will begin his campaign at queens on tuesday.

just the way i played last week is what i'm most proud of. so even though it not too long to reset, i've got to play tomorrow, but i'm obviously very proud, and winning my first one just before coming here as well, feeling confident, and all these types of things as well, it definitely means a lot to me, and something i will remember forever, how far i have come in the last year. and it's really nice to be able to get the title last week, and yes, i'm just in such a different place, mentally, physically, and just my tennis as well is very different. now, rory mcilroy says he'll take a few weeks away from golf "to process everything", after his gut—wrenching final round in his defeat to bryson dechambeu in the us open. the northern irishman missed two short putts in the closing stages to see a first major title in ten years slip away. he posted on social media...
2:52 am
he went on to say... ..adding... here's former european golfer, graeme storm. he was so, so close to getting that fifth major and we know how much he is striving to get that fifth major. to miss two putts from just less than three feet, i saw a stat he had only missed those two putts in 500 attempts over the season, so it has been very strong, but it has led him down at the crucial moment. rory when he is on his a—game is very difficult to beat. when he's playing like he was at pinehurst and we have to remember it was a really difficult
2:53 am
course, really difficult to hit the greens. one point it was 30 feet, the next minute in the native area, and found it difficult to get up and down or even make his par. always difficult to win a major and it is always going to be on the back of his mind, no matter how well he is playing, rory, or if he is not in a good vein of form when he's going into a tournament, but i am certain he will definitely win at least one, two, may be multiple more majors. finally, after two weeks of action, the line—up for the super 8s at the men's t20 cricket world cup is now complete. both the hosts are through, that's the united states and the west indies, along with india, england, australia, afghanistan, south africa and joining them, bangladesh. that's after they beat nepal, by 21 runs. nepal gave it a good go, but ultimately fell short in their chase of 107. it would have been their first win over a test—playing nation. shakib al—hasan with the final wicket. the result also ended the netherlands' slim hopes of qualification, they were beaten by sri lanka.

that is pretty much it from the world of sport. you can get plenty more on those stories and plenty more on our website. that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, thank you for watching, we will see you next time. hello. we've got a spell of slightly more settled june weather, and temperatures a little bit warmer than they have been, certainly compared to the first few weeks of the month. through the day on tuesday, there will be some sunshine for many of us, a few showers around, not as many as we have seen over recent days. we have high pressure trying to build in from the atlantic,
2:55 am
low pressure clearing away to the east, another area of low pressure moving in from the near continent, so that will be close to the southeast of england, sitting through the english channel, it could bring a bit of rain, at times. many of us start the day on a dry note. we've got more cloud and a cool, northerly wind blowing across northern scotland with a few showers, also some showers cropping up for northern england. but let's take a look through the english channel, there's that rain, perilously close to kent and east sussex, so a bit of wet weather possible here. should clear away during the afternoon. sunny spells for wales, up towards east anglia. variable cloud, as we move across into northern ireland. but a bit more brightness here than recent days. still fairly cloudy for scotland, with that northerly wind bringing a few rain showers, but they will be fairly light and patchy, i think, here through the day. one or two sharp showers for southern scotland, northeast england, down the pennines as well. some sunshine to the south of that, lifting temperatures to about 21, 22 degrees in the warmer spots. so we're typically looking at the mid to high teens for most, but cooler, just 12 or 13, across the northern half of scotland.
2:56 am
moving into the middle of the week, then, into wednesday, this ridge of high pressure moves its way in and squeezes the weather fronts away. so, most of us having a fine, dry day on wednesday, with some longer spells of sunshine, maybe some cloud bubbling up through the day, so not looking at wall—to—wall blue sky. a bit of a cool breeze blowing for east anglia, the far southeast, and it will also cloud over with a few sparks of rain for the far northwest. so again, coolerfor the north and northwest of scotland. 12-14. but most of us, 17 to 21 degrees. so more typical for the time of year. strong sunshine as well this time of year. into thursday, still a lot of dry weather, could be some showers close to the south—east of england once again, low pressure not too far away across the near continent. perhaps a bit more cloud in rain in the far northwest of scotland. in between, a fair amount of dry weather — 18 to 22. a touch cooler than that for the northern isles and the western isles, too. most of us stay dry, then, through into friday, but more of a chance of a bit more unsettled weather,
2:57 am
initially in the northwest, and then perhaps a little bit more widely, some spells of rain as we head on into saturday. bye for now.
