well, no one from question time or bbc news management was available for interview on this subject, but we'll be watching how it develops next week and look forward to hearing your views. on tuesday's news bulletins chris mason revealed that a billionaire who had previously donated half a million pounds to the conservative party was going to vote labour for the first time in his life next month. the labour party invited the bbc*s political editor to the london home ofjohn caudwell, the founder of phones for you to hear why. we can't create money out of thin air. we can't tax rich people in order to help the poor because they will go off to monaco and other places. we have to create real, genuine wealth. what, in your view, has gone wrong for the conservatives? is rishi sunak a dud? 0h, absolute dud.

kamal got in touch about the report. well, we put those points to bbc news and they told us

now, there's been quite a lot of angst around over the past week amongst supporters of the england and scotland men's football teams, with neither making a perfect start to euro 24. but there's also been some angst around those with no interest in football whatsoever. a number of bbc one news bulletins have been delayed or shortened so that matches can be carried live. sunday's news at ten was shown at 10.30. monday's news at one was halved in duration. wednesday's news at six came an hour late and half the length, as did thursday's and friday's news at one was only half an hour again. as for tuesday, well, viewer dave can tell us what happened. tuesday at 6:00, and i switched on for the main evening news and it wasn't there. so where was it? it was football and it wasn't
3:48 pm
even england playing. so switched over to bbc two, it wasn't there. we had richard osman*s house of games and robson green and his weekend escapes. why not get rid of those? they're the same time every night of the week. all i want is some news. we eventually did get a bit of news on bbc one at 7:05, but only 15 minutes* worth and then a bit of regional news at 7.20. i suppose my real question is, instead of moving all these things around, why not dedicate bbc two to be the euro 2a channel? and you make a lot of people happy. we put those points to those in charge of scheduling at the bbc and they told us:
3:49 pm
well, let's talk about the challenges for bbc schedulers in the middle of an election campaign and a major football tournament with roger mosey. he's currently the master of selwyn college, cambridge, but worked at the bbc as head of bbc television news and director of the corporation's olympic games coverage in 2008 and 2012 and as controller of radio five live he will have dealt with the conflict between news and sport many times. welcome back to newswatch, roger. why couldn't the bbc keep its news at normal times and durations but say move it to bbc two? well, the bbc has a mission of doing very good news coverage and also covering sport. and sometimes those things will clash. and when they do, it seems perfectly reasonable that it's actually becoming a dilemma that's easier, i think,
3:50 pm
because now there is the iplayer. there's news, as the bbc very fairly says, online and on radio. if the news isn't on bbc one, it's probably on itv at the right time. so there's a huge amount of viewer choice these days, and i think most people live with the fact that sometimes there will be some schedule changes for big sports events. it's interesting that we heard a viewer there complaining that the quiz shows are all kept in the same slot, but news was being messed around. why couldn't they move the football consistently to bbc two and keep the news on bbc one in its normal slots? well, there are two things going on there. the first is that the biggest audiences will be for sport and for the football. so actually most people will come in for football. and the expectation is that the biggest audience events are on bbc one. second thing is, you may say, well, in that case, why not play the news on bbc two? and that is still technically difficult because you can't do all the regional opts on bbc two, so you can't have your usual integration of the regional news and the national news if you put
3:51 pm
it on bbc two. so i think the least worse option for the bbc is to put the football with the mass audience on bbc one, sometimes have the bulletin a little bit later and also keep an alternative schedule going on bbc two if you can because lots of people like richard osman as well. newswatch viewers, i have to say regularly complain that they're fed up with several minutes of bulletin time being taken up with pre—match build up for the first scotland game, for example. that wasn't news, was it? there i am completely with the viewers, samira, because i do think there is actually too much sport in the news and especially that a lot of the build up, as you say, a lot of the preview which doesn't really tell us anything at all. and sometimes it's well, now it seems to be absolutely mandatory that when you do a match report, you've also got to have a report from leeds about how people in leeds watch the match. what we know actually we all watch the match if we're interested in it and we don't need to see that
3:52 pm
people in leeds were quite pleased when a goal was scored. so i agree. i think sometimes now the news should be about the news and the sport can happily be about the sport. the complication we've got right now is, of course, we're in the middle of a general election campaign. you've got all the extra debate and interview shows. there's party leaders, as we know, expecting prime time slots. how could the bbc resolve that challenge with all the sport that's going on this summer? we've got wimbledon starting soon. yeah, it's not easy to resolve. and there's glastonbury and there's all sorts of things happening. i mean, as you said, i used to be controller of five live and we generally took the view that people wanted to go to wherever the most exciting thing was happening and to be with that at the key moments, to have the other information as well. most people are interested in wimbledon and in the general election and in all the other things that are going on. so i don't think you're denying the audience a range of choice on things, but it is difficult and there will be times when you're fervently wishing that you could have a change from nigel farage on the leaders debate. but it's the right thing for the bbc to do public service broadcasting on the election as well.
3:53 pm
of course, a lot of the major broadcasters are doing these extra debate programmes and i wonder if you think there are too many of them. yes, there are now too many debate type programmes and especially, i think the seven way debates, ones where all the party leaders to take part, have now outlived their usefulness if they ever had it. and i think people find those just a shouting match. i do absolutely defend the leaders head to head debates, i think are a valuable piece of broadcasting and also the interviews. and we found this campaign that the interviews are often more enlightening than the punch ups. so it's right that all the broadcasters should look at what works and what doesn't and maybe slightly less of the flagship stuff because at this time it has felt like there's been a saturation point, but it's equally right that the broadcasters take a general election seriously. roger mosey, thank you. thank you for all your

england that we'll see the highest temperatures today, 21 or 22 degrees. further west nearer 18 or 19 celsius. and if you're a hay fever sufferer, you're probably well aware that we've got very high grass pollen levels for all but northern scotland and it could be a similar sort of story for tomorrow as well. still got one or two showers at the moment for eastern england, but during the evening, they do move away. we end up quite sunny here. there's a bit more cloud toppling into scotland and northern ireland, a dampness in that that'll push into wales, in northern england and the southwest. misty weather here, may well be some hill fog around as well. typical temperatures overnight around ten or 11 celsius. now as we head into tomorrow, a fine day across much of the uk and if anything, it's going to be warmer than today. this is when it starts to warm up. we've got the cloud, though, across northern england, wales, in the southwest, that will tend to push its way towards south eastern areas through the day, allowing more sunshine to develop across other parts of england and wales and lots of sunshine to come for scotland and northern ireland in
3:56 pm
some light winds, and temperatures are going to be higher than today by around about two or three degrees. may make 25 degrees or so in the southeast of england heading into the beginning of next week. and we're still looking at a lot of dry weather with some sunshine, high pressure, keeping those weather fronts at bay at the moment and temperatures continuing to rise. a bit of a misty start towards the southwest. and we will see after a sunny start, the cloud tending to build up and spread outjust a little bit, maybe that the best of the sunshine will be for some coastal areas, but it's continuing to warm up on monday. those temperatures widely into the mid 20s, 27, maybe even 28 degrees possible in the southeast of england. now, by the time we get into tuesday, this weather front could bring some rain into scotland and northern ireland, but it's still dry and very warm for england and wales. now, at the moment temperatures are near normal but likely to get warmer through sunday and particularly into the early part of next week. and it's possible the heat could last longer next week
3:57 pm
before the weather breaks and we get some heavy showers arriving as well.
