spain is getting ready with watching parties ahead of the final. they are hopeful they will be the first tournament to win the tournament for a fourth time. an israeli air strike in gaza has killed at least 71 people, according to the hamas—run health ministry. the attack happened near the southern city of khan younis — in the masawi area of the city. almost 300 people were injured. these pictures show the moment of the blast. an israeli official said the strike targeted the head of hamas*s military wing, mohammed deif, in an area where, the official said, there were "only hamas terrorists and no civilians." the israeli military had designated this area a safe zone, urging
4:01 pm
palestinians to seek shelter there. an eyewitness described the scene to the bbc, saying it was like an earthquake. doctors at a nearby field hospital are reported to be struggling to cope with scores of casualties. let's hearfrom a displaced civilian who witnessed the attack. translation: we were sitting - in the tent nothing was happening. suddenly a rocket fell over us. children were in pieces. god is sufficient for us and he is the best guardian of our affairs. look at us, world, have some feeling! our correspondent nick beake is in jerusalem with more on the attack. i've been listening to an israeli military official in the past 20 minutes or so, and they were asked repeatedly about this. was this a designated safe zone where palestinian families displaced from elsewhere could expect to be safe? and the official did not directly answer that question, although he was asked
4:02 pm
a number of times. what he did say, though, was that these hamas leaders had, in his words, cynically set up a compound in what was a civilian area and that they bear responsibility for what may happen, inserting themselves into a place where there are lots of families as well. so i think within that there is an acknowledgement that this was a civilian area. i think we can certainly say that. as for the target, the idf have been very clear. the israeli defence force is saying this was an opportunity to take out the head of hamas*s military wing. they say they used a precision strike that at the time there were guards surrounding mohammed deif and that this precision strike was carried out after what they described as very accurate intelligence was gathered. as for these reports of at least 71 people being killed, we've seen all the footage
4:03 pm
of the aftermath. uh, he said this military official from the israeli side, that he was unable to say how many people had died, how many people were killed in this strike. and what more do we know about the person that israel have confirmed that the strike was targeting, mohammed deif? and what more do we know about the person that israel have confirmed that the strike was targeting, mohammed deif? yes. well, we don't know whether he's alive or dead or severely injured. we might get more information on that in the coming hours. but certainly he's a man who's been a very high price for the israelis for many years now. there have been previous attempts to kill him. he's been someone who, according to israeli officials, say he and others are responsible for hundreds of attacks on israelis, both civilians and military personnel. and he was someone that they have been looking for an opportunity to try and take out, quite frankly. and this opportunity, according to the israelis, presented itself today, and they took that opportunity. of course, there'll be questions about whether or not they succeeded in their mission, of course, at what cost? because we have seen previously
4:04 pm
where the israelis have said that there have been high profile, high price targets that they've killed. there have been lots of people also killed, including, as we've seen time and again, women and children, the israelis being very forceful in what they're saying behind the scenes here, that they carried this out in a precise way. but certainly the images we're seeing and the condemnation from palestinian groups, hamas saying that this is completely unacceptable, this strike, and it also completely undermines the ongoing conversations and negotiations to try and bring about a stop in the fighting, some sort of ceasefire or hostage release deal. so this is a very bloody day, and i think we'll get more details as it goes on. representative says it will be a win for israel but only in the
4:05 pm
short—term. israel has tried to get him for 20 years now since it has been commander of the military wing. in fact, in 2014, israel declared him dead, only to find out that in fact he had survived. his wife and two children did not, and he's developed several nicknames as a result of that, including many in the israeli military establishing establishment, referring to him as the cat with nine lives, and even a top iranian military commander referred to him as the living martyr. so if in fact this was a successful
4:06 pm
hit, a successful elimination, it's a big short term win for benjamin netanyahu. well, yes, as you say, we don't know whether he's alive or dead. israel say they have targeted him. they've confirmed that. but we don't know whether that was successful. but you say it's it would be a big short—term win. how would it change things not just within the israeli strategy in terms of there, uh, their military strategy, but also in what it might mean for us support? yeah, i did choose my words carefully. i said short term win for a reason, because in the longer term, strategically, we've seen in the past, israel has eliminated top hamas commanders and officials only for hamas as an ideology, as a movement to replace those and even become stronger over time. so it's a victory for bibi netanyahu in the political sense. it allows him to consolidate his standing within his right wing bloc, his right wing coalition within israel. and again, short term militarily.
4:07 pm
i think it puts them at an advantage. but we have to be cognisant of the fact here that today israel has his reputation has taken a hit in the west, even in the united states. and the fact that we have 300 plus between dead and injured, many of which, i mean, i'm watching these images are in fact women and children. that doesn't support or does not does not enhance israel's long term standing in the international community. some breaking news in the world of sport. barbora krejcikova has beaten jasmine paolini of italy when the wimbledon women's singles tennis title. there were more on that in the sport shortly. a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of human remains in two suitcases at the clifton suspension bridge in bristol. the 34—year—old was detained by avon and somerset armed officers in the early hours of saturday morning. police say the remains, found both in the luggage

4:09 pm
been continuing here. we've seen forensic officers coming and going from the flat where those human remains were found a short time ago, officers extended the cordon. and that's because i understand they're about to carry out searches of some bins behind me. police have also been speaking to the members of the local community here. people who live in the flats, who tell me they feel a sense of shock. some of them say they don't feel safe here. so officers are trying to provide a sense of reassurance to the local community. plus, they want to check and make sure there's no vital information that the public have that they've yet to hear about, about what happened here. this has been a very distressing case. police described this morning's arrest as a significant development, and understand they're making preparations to bring the suspect from bristol, where he was arrested here, to london for questioning. let's get some of the

the manslaughter case against hollywood actor alec baldwin involving a fatal shooting on a film set in 2021. the judge ruled that the state witheld a key piece of evidence related to the ammunition that killed the cinematographer, halyna hutchins. the actor wept when the case was thrown out — meaning he cannot be tried again. but he still faces civil lawsuits. your motion to dismiss with prejudice is granted. this was the moment alec baldwin was told his court ordeal had ended. hugging his legal team in pure relief. this case had been hanging over him for nearly three years. how's it going, sir? when a gun alec baldwin was rehearsing with fired a live round, it killed the cinematographer, halyna hutchins. woman: oh, my god! the film's armourer, hannah gutierrez, was later convicted for having mistakenly loaded a live bullet into the weapon, but prosecutors believed alec baldwin was also partly

responsible for the way he handled the gun. but three days into his trial, new evidence emerged about a box of bullets that had been handed in to police but hadn't been included in the evidence. the box, said to be from the film's ammunition supplier, contained a mix of live rounds and dummy bullets. the defence argued that it cast doubt on some of the events leading up to the shooting, and that the prosecution had suppressed evidence that should have been disclosed. thejudge agreed. this disclosure during the course of trial is so late that it undermines the defendant's preparation for trial. there is no way for the court to right this wrong. alec baldwin is now a free man, and the collapse of this case is a disasterfor the prosecution. he cannot be tried again, but there may have to be a retrial of the film's armourer, hannah gutierrez. outside court, the lead prosecutor defended her actions. we did everything humanly possible to bring justice to halyna
