for sunday's euro 2024 final against spain barbora krejcikova is wimbledon champion — the czech player beats italy's jasmine paolini to win the women's singles title for the first time. welcome to the programme. we start with the latest on the israel gaza war. the hamas run health ministry says an israeli air strike in gaza has killed at least 71 people. the attack happened near the southern city of khan younis — in the al—masawi area of the city. almost 300 people were injured. these pictures show the name and have a blast. —— the moment of the blast. an israeli official said the strike targeted the head
6:01 pm
of hamas*s military wing, mohammed deif, in an area where, the official said, there were "only hamas terrorists and no civilians". the israeli military had designated this area a safe zone, urging palestinians to seek shelter there. an eyewitness described the scene to the bbc, saying it was like an earthquake. doctors at a nearby field hospital are reported to be struggling to cope with scores of casualties. let's hearfrom a displaced civilian who witnessed the attack. translation: we were sitting - in the tent nothing was happening. in the tent, nothing was happening. suddenly a rocket fell over us. children were in pieces. god is sufficient for us and he is the best guardian of our affairs. look at us, world, have some feeling! doctors at gaza's al—nasser hospital say that the hospital is no longer able to function because of the large number of casualties and shortages in medical equipment. the director of nasser hospital, dr atef al—hout, spoke to media about the situation there. translation: the surgeryi department is full of cases. the intensive care unit is completely full.
6:02 pm
as a result of today's injuries, we were forced today to open the operating rooms in the maternity ward in order to receive patients. we were forced to open the wards that belonged to doctors without borders, which normally undergo non—urgent orthopaedic surgeries. we were forced to open these for surgeries. the situation can't be described by any human. translation: my message - to the world health organization is for them to support the health sector in gaza as much as possible, because the situation is catastrophic. we don't have any surgical tools or medicine or even enough beds. the only hospital currently operating in the southern area of gaza is nasser medical complex. of gaza is nasser medical complex, after all the other hospitals in the southern area went out of service. the hospital is full of patients. it's full of wounded. we can't find beds for people. more on the situation in gaza. let's speak to our correspondent nick beake injerusalem. the israeli military says this strike took place in an open area — but it the area was designated
6:03 pm
a safe zone for displaced civilians but the area was designated a safe zone for displaced civilians — what do we know happened? the israeli position is that this was a precision strike, they carried it out after gathering what they described as quite considerable and very strong intelligence. they confirmed, as we have been hearing, that they were aiming for these two senior hamas figures, but as you say, there is a central question here about this being a zone of supposed safety for civilians, and i joined a briefing earlier on today in which a senior israeli military figure was talking a little bit about what had happened, and it was repeatedly put to him that this was a designated safe zone. now, he didn't engage with that question directly, but in his words, he said that senior hamas figures had cynically set up a compound in what was a civilian area. an admission
6:04 pm
that it was a civilian area, and worth finding out our colleagues at bbc verify have been looking at a lot of the very disturbing footage that has been coming out all throughout the day, and they have confirmed that all of that footage was taken in what was a humanitarian, supposedly safe, sane. how they have managed to work that out, they looked at the map on the israeli defence force's and website, and they came to that conclusion. so, it seems this was in a supposedly safe zone, and one doctor from the... one doctor told the bbc today, somebody treating some of the many casualties, that among the casualties are women and children. give us an idea of how many displaced people were in this area of khan younis. this displaced people were in this area of khan younis.— of khan younis. this was a city which, of khan younis. this was a city which. as _ of khan younis. this was a city which. as we _ of khan younis. this was a city which, as we know, _ of khan younis. this was a city which, as we know, has - of khan younis. this was a city which, as we know, has seen i of khan younis. this was a city| which, as we know, has seen a of khan younis. this was a city - which, as we know, has seen a lot of fighting. so many families have been displaced, not only once, but in some cases, three or four or five
6:05 pm
times, or more. it is hard to put an exact figure on this particular location. the israelis said today that the strike happened in what they described as an open location, they described as an open location, they conceded that people who they said were hamas bodyguards, in effect, of these two senior figures, that they were there. they said that there were not only tense in the location, which might often see where there are a number of displaced people —— there were not any attempts will stop there were lots of people. we have lots of video taken in the aftermath, there was so much chaos. people are being taken into was so much chaos. people are being ta ken into stretches was so much chaos. people are being taken into stretches on hospitals. hospital said that they were overrun, such with a number of people that they were trying to treat. there is a suggestion that this had a huge impact. as you said at the start, one eyewitness told the bbc soon after it happened that it was like an earthquake, they described three israeli jets in the air, and then shortly afterwards, all of this chaos and confusion, and
6:06 pm
all of this chaos and confusion, and a catastrophic picture they described on the ground. israel says that it was targeting _ described on the ground. israel says that it was targeting mohammed - described on the ground. israel says l that it was targeting mohammed deif, the hamas leader. we know if he was there? he the hamas leader. we know if he was there? , , ., there? he is somebody who israel have been trying _ there? he is somebody who israel have been trying to _ there? he is somebody who israel have been trying to take _ there? he is somebody who israel have been trying to take out - there? he is somebody who israel have been trying to take out four. have been trying to take out four years. in the 2000 there were four at destination attempts. yet this point, he has somewhat elusive status. he seemed to get away with his life. on one occasion, it seems he lost an eye, that is what has been reported. also, some limbs. there was a fifth attempt a decade ago to kill him. he survived that, but his wife and an infant were both killed. israel has said today that he is somebody who masterminded the october the 7th attack. but also, as the head of hamas's military when, that he played a crucial leading role in hundreds of attacks planned
6:07 pm
that targeted notjust israeli soldiers, but also israeli civilians. that is why he has been a top target for the israelis for many, many years. to answer your question, it is unclear whether or not he was targeted today, if he was injured, if he was killed. the israelis say that they might give more information tomorrow. clearly they will be trying to work out that exact question. for hamas, i think that there has been some confusing and contrasting elements coming out from hamas today. on one hand, ridiculing the suggestion israel may have carried out this attack on these two senior figures, that they would have been hit. but also, on the one hand, seeing daley seeming to neither confirm nor deny if mohammed deif was targeted and whether or not he was injured or possibly killed. maybe we will get some more news on that. if not this evening, i would expect tomorrow. thank you very much.
6:08 pm
scott anderson, unrwa director of affairs in gaza, the biggest un agency operating in gaza, has just returned from nassar hospital, where many of the injured were taken, and updated me on the situation there. i was at nasser hospital a couple of hours ago. we went to see the situation and to get an idea as to how the hospital is functioning, if it was able to handle the patients. what i found was a scene which was alarming, that is the best word to describe it. a lot of injured children, some without their parents. you saw children paralysed, some double amputees. it was very much concerning for us. so many innocent civilians have been harmed in this event. are the medical staff able to treat the numbers coming into the hospital? now, before the mass casualty event happened, nasser hospital has 38 emergency beds, and they had a0 patients. and then they had another 150 patients coming after that, they were putting patients
6:09 pm
anywhere they could. unfortunately, the hospital doesn't have enough disinfectant, enough fuel for the generator, enough of anything. they are very much trying to do their best to take care of people as they come in, but the shortages of supplies and the overcrowding of people that came in after what happened made it quite difficult for them to keep up with everyone who needed treatment. unfortunately, some people who should live unfortunately probably will not as a result of that. israel says it wasn't targeting civilians, that it was a targeted attack on hamas's military chief. how many people are in that area of khan younis? the larger al—mawasi area, there is 1,500,000 people there. the people who were in the area when the event happened, a lot of them were families. i talked to parents today at the hospital, some had lost children, others had children injured, some of the parents were injured and killed.
6:10 pm
so, in what was meant to be a safe zone, and many of the people said that to me today, they expected they would be safe there, unfortunately they were not. they suffered injuries, and even worse. and many of their families died. what you think of the fact this was classified a safe zone but it has still been hit? i think that we have said this all along, nowhere is safe in gaza. today was just another reason for that. it proves that. i think that more than ever, what this event shows is that we need a ceasefire in gaza, we need the hostages to go home to theirfamilies, and we need people in gaza to be afforded the opportunity to begin rebuilding their lives. now that there has been a strike there, what is likely to happen to the people we have seen running from that area? where are they able to go? is there anywhere? there is nowhere. gaza is not a very big place. the front lines were never
6:11 pm
far away from people. you cannot go far. gaza, north to south, is 42 kilometres. people move where they can, where they think that they and their family will be safe, but i don't think anybody will feel safe tonight after what happened today. i think that, as i said, what we really need first and foremost for the population of gaza is a ceasefire. how much aid are you able to get in as unrwa at the moment? not enough is the short answer. we've had problems with the law and order environment. the police are not functioning. that has led to a rise in crime and organised crime. they are targeting aid trucks coming in with what are perceived as high—value items. we are not getting enough in, but we continue to work every day to try to bring in more food, medicine, dignity kits, sanitary pads for women, it is very much basic necessities for people to survive until the conflict is over. briefly, are you optimistic
6:12 pm
that is going to happen? i think the most optimistic thing we can say is that the talks continue. as long as they are continuing to talk, that is positive. we very much hope there will be a deal reached that starts with the return of the hostages and then hopefully turns into a long—term truce so people can begin to rebuild their lives. scott anderson from un wrap talking to me earlier. you can get more on the israel— gaza war on the bbc website or app. we go to live pictures in berlin. not a lot happening there at the moment, but thatis happening there at the moment, but that is a hotel in the city where the england team are due to shortly arrive. they are of course going to face spain in the euro 2024 final tomorrow in berlin. also in the next hour, we are expecting the captain,
6:13 pm
hurricane and also gareth southgate to talk to the media. we think that that will be, depending on when they arrived, around 30 minutes' time. the team took their final training session a little earlier today. we did see hurricane during that. the captain. he got a little bit of discomfort in that semifinal and took a little bit, came off during that game. he was in action, so was kieran trippier, who went off in the semifinal. both of them were in training, the final training session. the 26 man squad, they trained there before their base in blank and haim where they have been based at the tournament before. that is before they made the journey to berlin. we are expecting them to arrive shortly. we will of course go
6:14 pm
back to berlin as soon as they do. we will bring you the press conference live weight gareth southgate and hurricane a little bit later. year in the uk, a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of human remains in two suitcases at the clifton suspension bridge in bristol. the 34—year—old was detained by avon and somerset armed officers in the early hours of saturday morning. our reporter simonjones has more. well, in the early hours of this morning, a manhunt which has lasted more than two days and brought police officers here to west london and also to bristol, came to an end. that's when officers arrested a 34—year—old man on suspicion of on suspicion of murder at bristol temple meads station. armed officers were involved in his detention. police say this is a fast moving investigation. it began on wednesday and that's when the police received a call from a member of the public saying that a man was acting suspiciously on clifton suspension bridge in bristol.
6:15 pm
now the police arrived on the scene, they say within ten minutes, but the man by that stage had gone. but there were two suitcases that were found. and inside the grim discovery of the human remains of two men. now the police say they believe they have identified those two men, but they are still trying to trace the members of their family to inform them. the investigation then shifted here to west london in shepherd's bush, where yesterday police made the discovery of further human remains in a flat in the area behind me. now the police say their investigations are continuing, but they believe the human remains from here are linked to those found in bristol. now, throughout the course of the day, we've seen a lot of police activity. in fact, this afternoon the police cordon has been extended. officers are carrying out searches of bins. they've also been searching some bushes near the flat where the human remains were discovered. so officers still trying to piece
6:16 pm
together what happened. they've also been speaking to members of the local community who remain in a state of shock. one woman told me she felt vulnerable. she didn't feel safe here any more, so that's partly to try to reassure people, and also partly for the police to make sure they're getting all the information they can from the public about what people may have seen over the past few days. so the search is very much continuing here. i understand now arrangements are being made to bring the suspect from bristol, where he was arrested here, to london for questioning. the police will have some time to carry out that question, but they will obviously want to provide answers for this local community, very much disbelieving what has happened on their doorstep. the family of the three women killed in a crossbow attack has released a statement. carol hunt, who was 61, and her daughters hannah hunt, 28, and louise hunt, 25, died at their home in bushey in hertfordshire, on tuesday evening.
6:17 pm
the murder sparked a manhunt that ended with the arrest of kyle clifford, who's suspected of three counts of murder. the statement reads: the bbc*s louisa pilbeam — says this is the first time john hunt — who is a bbc racing commentator — and his daughter amy have publicly addressed the tragedy. it was shocking incident, and this is the first time that we've heard from the hunt family, from john hunt and from his daughter amy. now, just a reminder that this
6:18 pm
attack happened on tuesday evening. it sparked a huge manhunt for the suspect. and at a house in bushey in hertfordshire. in hertfordshire, carol, who was 61, the mother of her two daughters, louise, 25, and hannah, 28, they were found dead in their home. a shocking and, as you say, unimaginable attack. and this statement, it really does say how devastated the family are. but as they say, they cannot even put into words their devastation. and they've spoken of their grief, they've also spoken, though, of the fact that they feel the kindness and the support from the public and people who have been going to the home and to a local church to give that support and give their warm wishes. they've said that "this has provided great comfort to us "and we are very grateful." kyle clifford, a man who's 26, has been arrested. now he's been arrested on three counts of murder. he is in police custody.
6:19 pm
he's actually in the hospital at the moment. and this was such a shocking incident that the uk prime minister afterwards has said that he will be looking into the laws governing crossbows, as it is suspected that a crossbow was used in this attack. we return to the football as we countdown to the final in 24—hour*s time. let me show you the live pictures from berlin. this is the hotel where we are expecting the england team to arrive. they have travelled from their training ground to the german capital. so, very shortly we are expecting their team bus to arrive there. we will of course then have a press conference from gareth southgate, the manager, and also harry kane, the captain.
6:20 pm
that looks like a bus to me. they are right on cue. it is as if we planned this bear is the england team bus arriving in the german capital of berlin ahead of tomorrow's euro 2024 final in the city. england will be aiming to win a first major men's trophy in 58 years. it was of course the world cup in 1966. spain, meanwhile, will be hoping to make history and become the team that has won the euros four times. they won it of course in 1964, 2008, and 2012, but they lost in 1984. so, there is a bus that has arrived. we were talking elliott to ollie. who is in the city, saying that there are thousands of england fans who were there waiting, many of them don't have tickets, and they are there mainly for the atmosphere,
6:21 pm
and to go into the fan zones where thousands of people will be watching on big screens. some lucky people do have tickets, however, there will be fans trying to get tickets. ollie was telling us that they are going for thousands of euros already. face value... ollie foster was talking to many people who managed in the uefa draw that they have to get tickets for only £80 each. just to witness this piece of history. i think that you can see there are some of the members of the crew. that look like gareth southgate going in between all of those people. just trying to see if we can see the support team that will be there as well around the players. that goes gareth southgate. they will be followed by the other members of the team off that bus. of course, we are
6:22 pm
expecting gareth southgate and captain harry kane to hold a news conference in the next half an hour or so, conference in the next half an hour orso, once conference in the next half an hour or so, once they have managed to put their bags down and get settled into their bags down and get settled into the hotel, they will face the media and answer the questions of the journalists. we know that during the semifinal, harry picked up, came off... there we go, phil foden is arriving as well. one of the hopes during... hoping he will be quite speedy. he was quite speedy in the semifinal. it is hoped he will keep that up. the team are arriving there and burning. as we said, they will face spain in the final tomorrow. a lot of people in england are hoping football will come home. they are hoping that they cannot win their first major men's trophy in 58 years. i still haven't spotted harry
6:23 pm
kane, the captain. as i said. we will hopefully have a news conference. there is a jude bellingham, one of the stars of the team. if you want to read more about him, there is an article looking at jude bellingham and have a lot of the hopes are pinned on him on the bbc sport website. the other one, of course, teenager, menu, it is hoped he can score up against the spanish team. there is saka go again. the 70th birthday is being celebrated by libyan emr. the mania mall. ellen... came off the bench after the last group game. he has a midfield conundrum, does gareth southgate with manchester united flashing in
6:24 pm
the... became the youngest person ever to score any european championship with his goal. his 17th birthday today. it will be interesting. and of course, england made it to the finals of the last year rose. that was in 2021. the euro 2020 final was delayed because of covid—19. they lost on penalties to italy. england always hoping it doesn't go to penalties. often it doesn't go to penalties. often it does go to penalties. so, we will wait to see if it ends in 90 minutes or extra time and penalties. a lot of england fans always think it might well go to penalties. we will wait and see. we can see there the england team coming off the coach in berlin and settling into their hotel after their final training session.
6:25 pm
their overshoes. they obviously have their own little platform, some of their own little platform, some of the shoes for the england players. that is a reminder that there will be full coverage of the year 82024 final across across the day tomorrow here on bbc news. so, we are watching these pictures of the england team arriving at the hotel in berlin ahead of their final with spain tomorrow. we will... we still haven't seen harry kane. i don't know if he sneaked off without us seeing him. the england skipper, i would say 100% going to start. whether he stays on for the whole game, he of course came off during the semifinal, we shall see. here's
6:26 pm
england's all—time leading goal—scorer and could be up for golden boot at the euros this year. he might have to share the award with some of the other players. one of those is spain's dani olmo who will himself be trying to get a goal so that he can walk off with the golden boot. let us us go to barcelona. we will keep an eye on these pictures. let us bring in our barcelona correspondent. i mentioned dani olmo, he will be hoping to score, as will the spanish ones lamine yamal. what is the mood as the england team arrive in berlin? ., ., ., , , , berlin? for now, the meat is pretty cuiet. we berlin? for now, the meat is pretty quiet. we haven't _ berlin? for now, the meat is pretty quiet. we haven't seen _ berlin? for now, the meat is pretty quiet. we haven't seen many - berlin? for now, the meat is pretty| quiet. we haven't seen many people wearing spanishjerseys. —— the mood is pretty quiet. the only flag we
6:27 pm
can currently see it as an england flag on a hotel. tourists from england i guess are visiting barcelona during the euros final. this square here in the centre of barcelona will be crowded and packed tomorrow. the biggest watch party in the city will be here. there is no screen yet, but where i am speaking from, that is where the big screen will be, in this square. there are
6:28 pm
of watch parties organised across the country. not only barcelona and madrid but also smaller cities and towns. i would say in spain people start later.
6:29 pm
