11:00 pm
barbora krejcikova is wimbledon champion — the czech player beats italy's jasmine paolini to win the women's singles title for the first time. hello. england manager gareth southgate
11:01 pm
says england players can bring happiness to the nation if they win. he and his squad arrived in berlin tonight ahead of the final against spain, and throughout the day thousands of england fans have descended on the german capital as anti—swiss no reports. chanting. basking in berlin all day, england fans flocked to the german capital for what they hope will be the experience of a lifetime. come on england! and for some of those arriving, those all important tickets haven't come cheap. do you mind me asking how much you paid for yours? um, a lot of money. a lot of money. we're talking thousands? yeah, tens of thousands. tens of thousands? wow! i'm here with my family, and it means the world to be here. there's nothing better, is there? the england players have also now arrived in berlin, the final stop on what has been a remarkablejourney. palmer finds watkins. watkins turns. watkins scores! their semifinal win was the latest in a string of dramatic victories,
11:02 pm
but their manager insists that counts for nothing. i'm not a believer in fairy tales. um, but i am a believer in dreams. but then, you know, you have to make those things happen. and fate, um, the run that we've had, the late goals, the penalties, that doesn't equate to us, you know, it being our moment, we have to make it happen tomorrow. and among the good luck messages for southgate*s players was one from the prince of wales. "we are so proud of you all," he said. "just one last push to finish thejob." well, this stadium has seen its fair share of sporting history and tomorrow england will be hoping to create their own. generations of fans have never seen them win a major men's tournament. is that finally about to change? some people are on the pitch. they think it's all over... it is now.
11:03 pm
ever since that iconic world cup win in 1966, england have had hard luck stories... ..penalty shoot—out agonies. .. and england are out of the world cup. ..and countless disappointments. this is surely as bad as it's ever been for england? but after all those years of hurt, glory is now within their grasp. andy swiss, bbc news, berlin. our sports correspondent olly foster is in berlin for us, and he had some analysis on how gareth southgate might be feeling ahead of tomorrow's game they've really pushed their luck to get this far. let's make no bones about it. spain will be considering themselves favourites, scoring more goals than any other side in the tournament in what's been a fairly low scoring tournament. they got lamine yamal there, their wonderkid that you've been talking about. happy birthday to him today. just 17. they've won six games in a row.
11:04 pm
no other side in euros history has done that. but then we have england who looked very very ordinary in the group stage and it didn't seem so long ago that gareth southgate, relaxed as he is now, was talking about how much it hurt the the very personal criticism you remember at the end of the group stage when they could only draw with slovenia, he was pelted with beer cups from the stands and given absolute dog abuse, and then they pushed their luck with, um, they were they were five minutes from into injury time. they were going out before that overhead kick from jude bellingham forcing extra time in there in the last 16. and then it was penalties against the swiss in the quarterfinals. perfect penalties as they were. they're always a lottery and then they finally raise the bar. it was a pretty low bar to begin with in their semifinal against the dutch, but again it needed a winning goal in the final seconds. so as much as the spanish have got
11:05 pm
the form, they've got the flair. they look absolutely terrific. england have got luck on their side, so if gareth southgate has got luck on his side, then of course he'll be feeling relaxed. he's somehow managed to get this team into another european championship final back to back finals now. so who knows. perhaps they feel that they have just got this charmed life here at these euros, which is why the spanish, they will be cautious. as olly said, many england fans are on epic road trips to get to germany to be part of the celebrations , and harry low is among them... we've arrived in the small german town of beckham. no relation to the former england captain. england captain, david, you can probably see the autobahn behind me. you can probably also see that the sun is about to set. some 13.5 hours after i left my flat in north west london this morning,
11:06 pm
and some 12.5 hours after we set off from south london, we've had a very, very long journey. it's been one with some delays, particularly around the folkestone area. when we took the eurotunnel from folkestone to calais late this morning, we were held up. there were some delays between the english border control and the french border control. we understand the reason for that is because the french border forces have introduced a new passport checking system, and that held a few people up. but there's absolutely no question that there are loads and loads of fans. you just heard from olly there, mentioning that the head of the german policing in berlin thinks that as many as 50,000 could make their way there. well, let me tell you, many of the people travelling along with us so far today are travelling ticketless, so we're lucky enough that we have tickets in our group. but many, many more fans are travelling without a ticket. we've seen some very interesting scenes along the autobahn already. we saw a routemaster bus travelling along the inside lane a little bit earlier on, bound for carshalton. i suspect it's gone a bit bit awry there, but we also saw a minibus
11:07 pm
with english number plates broken down. we've actually seen a number of broken down vehicles on ourjourney here. fortunately enough, touch wood, we haven't succumbed to that fate so far, but it's just clear when you drive along the road and you stop off. just quite how many people are also making this journey. and the reason they're doing it is because the flights, as you've been hearing, are just so incredibly expensive. there have not been direct flights to berlin since england won that game against the netherlands in the semifinal on wednesday night, and as a result, people have been trying to find any means possible to get across. that might be buses, it might be flying to destinations in poland and in some of the other neighbouring countries. the netherlands of courses is another option for people. at some of the flights i saw involved changing in places like turkey and mallorca and mallorca, and of course people aren't going to want to do that, and particularly with the high cost involved and the potential risk. hopefully he'll make it to berlin by
11:08 pm
the time of the final tomorrow. spain have been the stand out team of this tournament — and victory on sunday, would give them a record fourth european championship title. here's what the spain manager had to say earlier. translation: we should be able to exerience translation: we should be able to experience the _ translation: we should be able to experience the joy _ translation: we should be able to experience the joy of _ translation: we should be able to experience the joy of living - experience the joy of living something that is going to stay with us forever, a memory that we will cherished for other. i want them to enjoy the moment, to enjoy what they have achieved by their own merit, by their own efforts and they have an historical opportunity to achieve something and to put spain into the highest level of european winners. so that's the view from england's point of view. so to spain. sergee forcada is in barcelona for us. ican i can say that pretty quiet where i am right now, i'm in the city centre of barcelona, that will change in
11:09 pm
the next few hours. for those who have not been as lucky, there are plenty of watching parties being organised across the country, one of them here in barcelona, and where we can't see the screen yet, were being promised by local authorities, the screen will be here tomorrow afternoon, so everyone come of the thousands of people who are expected here will be able to watch that game together. people here are excited. they are hopeful as well. spain has had a tough competition but in a good way. people praising their football, so they got rid of italy, france, germany, so they say, well, england is next. we can make it happen. england is next. we can make it ha en. * england is next. we can make it ha en, * , england is next. we can make it ha en. * , , england is next. we can make it hauen. * , ., england is next. we can make it ha--en.~ ,~ , happen. and maybe they are pinning their ho es happen. and maybe they are pinning their hepes on _ happen. and maybe they are pinning their hopes on their— happen. and maybe they are pinning their hopes on their teenage - their hopes on their teenage superstar, and moll, who is actually celebrating his 17th birthday today. he is quite an amazing footballer for his age.

11:11 pm
and expats are gearing up for tomorrow's match. we are in spain, we're in benidorm, so we're about 500km south of barcelona. but i must say, we haven't heard much spanish since we've got here. if you can see just behind me. well, this is the hotel california, but they are a british pub. we've got the crown pub here. we've got an entire strip full of british tourists and british establishments. and now, this time tomorrow, you can only imagine how packed it's going to be. so this streetjust here is going to be closed off to traffic and all pubs, all clubs, will need to serve everything in plastic glasses. so they're anticipating that it might get a little bit rowdy. but it's all a bit exciting isn't it, nicky? it does look fun with you. have you had chance to talk to many of the english fans? are they optimistic? i think there is a bit of a quiet optimism. people don't want to jinx it, you
11:12 pm
know, like we remember very clear in the memory three years ago. so we certainly don't want a repeat of that. but there's a lot of people looking very excited who've seen it. quite a few three lions shirts you can see a lot of england fans flags rather behind me at hotels as well. they're draped from the balcony, so people are certainly very excited and feeling very positive about gareth southgate and his boys tomorrow. and of course, i assume it is actually a big boost money wise for a lot of the pubs and establishments there, because a lot of people will be heading inside to watch the game and maybe having a few drinks, whether that be alcoholic or nonalcoholic. absolutely. and nicky, let's be real, i think it's going to be starting pretty early tomorrow morning. we've already seen a lot of signs for english breakfasts. here, you canjust hear behind us.
11:13 pm
what are they singing? "football's coming home." if there is anything to believe, football is coming home. are you going to give us a little rendition of it's coming home? you know what, nicky? they've just left. i wouldn't want to continue, you know, maybe. maybe tomorrow. yes, indeed, i think i think probably if we come back to you this time tomorrow, there probably will be less sober people on those streets than there are at the moment. absolutely. you can hold me.... it's coming home, coming home, it's coming home. it's coming home. emer mccarthy in benidorm. you can read more from gareth southgate's news conference on the bbc sport website and app and a reminder you can watch the final live on bbc one tomorrow night and we will have all the build up during the day here on bbc news.
11:14 pm
know, ijust know, i just want to bring know, ijust want to bring you some breaking news that we are getting. i want to take you to some live pictures from a, former president trump rally. we are hearing reports that shots have been fired at this president trump rally. now, this is taking place in pennsylvania. we understand that the former president has just been bundled understand that the former president hasjust been bundled into understand that the former president has just been bundled into one of those cars, of course all former presidents have a massive secret service detail with them at all times. you can see there, lots of emergency vehicles and cars that are whizzing away from there. president trump was due to address supporters of his presidential rally, it's in pennsylvania. this is a swing state he won in 2016. but he was defeated
11:15 pm
there byjoe biden four years later. this all comes ahead of the republican*s national convention which is scheduled to start on monday. this is when it is likely that donald trump will name who his pic is as running mate for the presidential election in november. now, we understand that as we said, secret service agents and escorted him to a vehicle. we are also hearing that he was seen raising a fist in the air as he got into the car. so if you are just fist in the air as he got into the car. so if you arejustjoining us, the breaking news is that shots have been fired at a trump rally in pennsylvania. donald trump was due to address those supporters and i'm not sure if he had actually gone onto the stage or not at the time, but you can see that there is a lot
11:16 pm
of activity there from the security services. and they have taken former president donald trump away. secret service of course with donald trump at all times of the day, 2a hours a day, as with all former presidents and of course the current president, president biden. you can see that the situation, the people there are quite calm. there is not a lot of panic at that rally at the moment. it certainly hasn't been lots of people running and so the security service is obviouslyjumped into operation and very quick there, but president trump, former president trump taken away from that rally in pennsylvania by the security services, the secret service. we can see there but the crowd are quite calm. what i can now show you is the moment that this happened, so there
11:17 pm
he is on stage. gunshots, screaming. so there you can see the moment that shot was fired, he came to the ground and is surrounded by the security services that you can see there. what i'm going to do now is we are going to cross live to our colleagues in washington for the very latest on this as shots have been fired at the donald trump rally in pennsylvania. you can see the secret service and armed police coming up onto that stage. let's cross to our colleagues in washington. mi cross to our colleagues in washington.— cross to our colleagues in washington. cross to our colleagues in washinuton. * ., ., , ., , washington. all of a sudden from my left, we washington. all of a sudden from my left. we heard _ washington. all of a sudden from my left. we heard a _ washington. all of a sudden from my left, we heard a bunch _ washington. all of a sudden from my left, we heard a bunch of— washington. all of a sudden from my left, we heard a bunch of shots, - washington. all of a sudden from my left, we heard a bunch of shots, and| left, we heard a bunch of shots, and people ran towards us so we took off. people were running, tripping, falling. wejust ran off. people were running, tripping,

11:20 pm
we were able to see you sort of taking cover. ijust wanted to ask you, what did you hear when you were there, how loud were those shots, did you have a sense of what was happening, and you are outside we should say of that actual rally? yeah. i mean, it's difficult to say. i was standing sort of with the rally ahead of me to the left, and i could hear the shots happening. harare could hear the shots happening. have some reapeet- — could hear the shots happening. have some respect. no, _ could hear the shots happening. have some respect. no, i— could hear the shots happening. have some respect. no, i have some respect. _ some respect. no, i have some resect. ~ ., , ., ., respect. we are explaining to the ublic respect. we are explaining to the public what _ respect. we are explaining to the public what has _ respect. we are explaining to the public what has happened. - respect. we are explaining to the public what has happened. the i respect. we are explaining to the - public what has happened. the public has a right to know what's happening. so, whati has a right to know what's happening. so, what i heard, carl, is a couple hundred metres away at a rapid number of shots, possibly six or eight shots. it's difficult to tell the number but it was clearly gunfire. and that's all we know at this stage, we don't know. clearly
11:21 pm
are there may well have been people injured, the speech has stopped, donald trump was taken offstage, but the facts are very very unclear at the facts are very very unclear at the moment. the facts are very very unclear at the moment-— the facts are very very unclear at the moment. stay with us here, i 'ust want the moment. stay with us here, i just want to _ the moment. stay with us here, i just want to bring _ the moment. stay with us here, i just want to bring our _ the moment. stay with us here, i just want to bring our audience i the moment. stay with us here, i just want to bring our audience a | just want to bring our audience a bit more information that we are getting in and this is coming from the afp news agency. it said that donald trump was seen with blood on his ear as he was removed from the rally stage. it doesn't mean that we know that of course he was struck by any gunfire, that could have been. we saw the moment that the president went down to the stage, it could've been from that moment, that report coming in from the afp news agency and just to bring our viewers up to date, this hasjust developed and just to bring our viewers up to date, this has just developed at a rally at pennsylvania, this is a trump rally, we have heard reports from writers of shots fired, we heard there from our correspondent gary o'donoghue, he was able to hear those shots, bystanders, also hearing several shots fired and i believe we can see that moment and out when this all took place, let's
11:22 pm
take a look at that. gunshots, screaming. just moments ago, you could see the president try to grab towards his ear at the moment, we'rejust speculating at this point, we don't know anything more about the state of the president himself, or whether or not he was struck by any shots, but you could hear very clearly in that moment that shots were being fired. you could see the former president donald trump being taken away surrounded by his security detail, he was put into an armoured vehicle, he was taken away, we will have to try to find out where he was taken but presumably he will be taken to a taken but presumably he will be ta ken to a safe taken but presumably he will be taken to a safe location and somewhere where he may receive some sort of medical treatment. gary
11:23 pm
o'donoghue are senior north america correspondent isjust o'donoghue are senior north america correspondent is just outside of that rally. gary, all we know right now, we know shots have been fired, we saw the moment there where president trump was in the middle, just very beginning of his speech there. . you have been to rallies like this before, these are generally events that you see very high levels of security, what security did you see in place and would have been there protecting the president? would have been there protecting the resident? ., , would have been there protecting the resident? ., , ., ., ., . president? there was a lot of police as ou president? there was a lot of police as you could — president? there was a lot of police as you could imagine. _ president? there was a lot of police as you could imagine. don't - president? there was a lot of police as you could imagine. don't forget i as you could imagine. don't forget as you could imagine. don't forget as a former president he gets secret service protection around the clock in any case. the security for these things is enormously high, but this is an outdoor venue. this has its own challenges in terms of security because while you can check everyone that goes into the event, you can check all the media, you check the public that go right into the event,
11:24 pm
clearly there are spots around here to sort of, a rural area, there are spots around here where people could presumably hide. so we are speculating about where these shots were coming from but certainly the couple of people we've heard from so far suggest that it was outside of the venue and words. and you saw there on the pictures, the former president appeared to put his hand up president appeared to put his hand up to his ear and some reports that we've seen of blood on his ear as he's been taken away, but security is incredibly heavy for a former president. he is obviously a figure that raises emotions as well, and that raises emotions as well, and that means security is also very high for those reasons. sorry, we've got some noises off here from, emotions as you can imagine are pretty high here at the moment. you saw that a moment ago with a guy who was objecting to us being on air. but it's important for us to be here, to tell you what's, what we
11:25 pm
know about what's happening. and the sort of lack of detail we have at this stage, but this is incredibly serious incident, this is something that you know, hasn't happened in the united states for a long time. i'm thinking back to attempt on ronald reagan's life, of course when he was shot as president. and the assassination ofjfk. this is something that is one of those kind of moments where you, you have to sort of take a breath and try to work out what's happening in the details will come in time, i'm sure. and we will learn what happened with those shots. what i can confirm to you is while we were on airjust a few hundred metres away from the rally itself while we were broadcasting, on the bbc world service, there were at least half a dozen, possibly more shots fired away to sort of behind me where i was standing, in rapid succession those shots. they were clearly gunshots. and that is i'm afraid,

11:27 pm
and incredibly scary moment there come a very disturbing scenes there in the state of pennsylvania. you can see president donald trump going to the ground as those shots rang out. several different secret service officers then piling on top of him, protecting the former president as those gunshots continued to ring out. there will be some speculation because it's potentially visible to see on that video donald trump grasping for his ear, and we are getting reports from the afp news agency that trump was seen with the blood on his ear as he was being removed from the rally stage. we were able to see you then as we dipped in live, the former president being led away by his security detail, being put into an armoured vehicle, being driven away. he was conscious, he was on his two
