grateful to the secret service for getting him to safety. there is no place for this kind of violence in america. we must unite as one nation to condemn it. that comes from the president of the united states, joe biden, the political rival of former president donald trump and at this moment those two men in this country searching for unity as we witnessed a potential assassination attempt on the former president, donald trump. you can see here video of the aftermath of the shootings. shots rang out and donald trump was whisked off the stage by secret service to a vehicle where he was then driven off the scene. let's go now to pennsylvania. oursenior correspondent is reporting for us all day there. gary, you were there already, outside the rally. obviously before the incident took place and now

there you are on lockdown. this entire area is being controlled. this is now an active investigation?- controlled. this is now an active investigation? this is a massive crime _ active investigation? this is a massive crime scene, - active investigation? this is a massive crime scene, that. active investigation? this is a massive crime scene, that is| massive crime scene, that is what this is. what we have had is what looks like, what looks like an attempt on donald trump *s life. that is what the initial evidence would suggest and we have gathered from eyewitnesses and people inside the rally. we were a few hundred metres away, about to go on air and this isjust under two hours ago now. i was talking to our colleagues on the bbc world service and we heard a volley of shop from maybe 150, 200 metres away. we knew immediately it was gunfire and that is why we lay down on the grass behind our car and tried to make sure we had shelter. it is exposed here, as you can tell, we are on a hill and you have no idea whether shots are coming from and the

screaming started from inside and people started to stream out. we a number of eyewitnesses about the nature of what they saw. people very shocked, people loaded into ambulances. donald trump himself fell to the ground and was told to go to the ground by secret service people. they pile on top of him as you heard. they do that because it is their job heard. they do that because it is theirjob to put their bodies between him and the bullets. that is what theirjob is and what they are paid to do. they took him away quickly and we are told by eyewitnesses as well that before he left he stood up himself and raised his fist and i think that she had some of the supporters who were here. we've since heard from his campaign that is fine and at a medicalfacility. we his campaign that is fine and at a medical facility. we also heard from a number of eyewitnesses here who have described to us their belief that the shooting was coming from a one story building with

a white roof, a metal one story building with a white roof off to the right of the stages donald trump was standing on one eyewitness we spoke to was from around here said that he saw a man climbing onto the roof. five, seven minutes into the speech, he climbed up the side and onto the roof with a rifle and he tried to point that out to the secret service and the police and they could not see from where they were but he was pointing it out and a couple of minutes later the shooting started. he also told us he saw the man killed. we cannot confirm any of that but we hear from law cannot confirm any of that but we hearfrom law enforcement sources and talking to our partners at cbs that the suspect was neutralised and potentially one other person was also lost their life at this point in time. it is early days and we will have to see. there were at least six or eight shots fired. they may have been in both directions, it may have been the shooter and those who shot back because

after that shooting in pennsylvania. that was, of course, at a rally for former president donald trump on the campaign trailjust outside of pittsburgh. that took place in the last hours of shots fired and we do believe the president was potentially injured in the ear, he is currently fine according to his campaign but a shocking moment and one that will have everybody on edge across the country. i want to bring you now some of the latest we are getting, this comes from our partners at cbs news saying that the biden campaign is pausing all of its outbound communication and working to pull down television ads as quickly as possible. i should say we are also hearing from a spokesperson from downing street condemning political violence in all forms. let's bring in our state department correspondent who has been standing by to cover this with us. tom, so many reactions beginning to come in.

obviously in the united states republicans and democrats but also from around the world. across the board politically. what we just heard from the eyewitnesses at the scene hearing the fear and anxiety is about what this says about this country in this moment has really been reflect that across its political echelon. at the same time also a raft of calls for calm and full effect that so many politicians, senior politicians across the political divide are saying there is no place for political violence. you could almost copy and paste some of these statements. you mentioned presidentjoe biden, of course he was in michigan last night at a rally and he had flown to delaware and was at his residence and we are now told that president biden, according to the reporter... . that president biden, according to the reporter. . ._ to the reporter... . could i 'ust to the reporter... . could i justjump _ to the reporter... . could i justjump in _ to the reporter... . could i justjump in here, - to the reporter... . could i justjump in here, it i to the reporter... . could i justjump in here, it looks| justjump in here, it looks like the president has begun speaking, let's listen. he

conducted peacefully with no problems but the idea, the idea that there is political violence or violence in america like this isjust violence or violence in america like this is just unheard of and inappropriate. everybody must condemn it. everybody. i will keep you informed and if i am able to speak to donald i will let you know that as well. so far it appears he is doing well, number one. numbertwo, well, number one. number two, they well, number one. numbertwo, they are thoroughly investigating what has happened to anyone else in the audience. we have some reports but not final reports and every agency and the federal government and i am going back to my phone to speak with the federal agencies that have been put together again to give you an update and see if they have learned anything more in the last couple of hours. thank you very much and i will get back to you later tonight.— later tonight. assassination i later tonight. i assassination attempt? i later tonight. _ assassination attempt? i have an opinion _ assassination attempt? i have an opinion but _ assassination attempt? i have an opinion but i _ assassination attempt? i have an opinion but i do _ assassination attempt? i have an opinion but i do not i

before. and, yes, condemning any political violence as everyone will. the biden campaign is already trying to hold a lot of its campaign activity at the moment, trying to stop the tv ads playing and stuff going up online. i think there will be a lot of pressure for some sort of pause in this campaign in general while things become clearer. he was asked there whether he regarded this as an assassination attempt he said he did not have the facts at this stage, he had an opinion but no fact at this stage. that is clearly the question that people will ask, was this another former president, was this anotherformer president, another holder of the most powerfuljob in the world with an attempt on his life. that is the question people will ask. it would not be the first time in this country but it is a shocking moment when things like this happen. we heard from our eyewitnesses here how upset and emotional they have been about what happened and i have been raising all sorts of questions. there has been some anger as
1:17 am
well. we witnessed some anger here on bbc news shortly after the shooting. we were trying to bring you the news of what was happening and there was a guy understandably upset it was not very keen for us to do that and tried to stop us doing that but it is ourjob to bring you the details of what happened as best we can and to explain it to the public and explain it to the world. that is what we're here for and that is why we are staying in broadcasting. this is not ghoulish, this is not us being mawkish about anything, this is us trying to tell people what has happened in the clearest possible way and also tell you what we do not know because we do not know most of the facts about what is happening. we do not know anything about this shooter, we do not know anything about the potential motive, we do not know anything about the security lapse they may have been. we do not know how injured donald trump is at this stage. we do not know how many people have been wounded or
1:18 am
killed in a crowd. there is so much we do not know but we will try to explain what we do know until you how we think we know and that is why we have been talking to so many eyewitnesses over the last few hours. you heard from greg who said he saw a man crawling up onto the roof of the single story building with the white roof, the middle single story building, saw a man crawling onto it with a rifle. he tried to alert security services. he also saw that man killed by security services and described that in graphic detail. all these things will have to be checked out and verified that the moment we are in a massive lockdown area and cannot go anywhere in or out. police are looking particularly at that building, there was never dogs over there about 30 minutes ago. this is one great big crime scene as we speak.
1:19 am
motorbikes, choppers, police, everything you could imagine because there are many questions still to answer. gary, thank you for bringing us those details and speaking with so many people on the ground. the emotion and the anger that you were describing is now the task of leaders including us presidentjoe biden to try and quell those emotions. i want to come back to the studio now i have a former white house correspondent with me. we were listening to that speed, brief remarks from president biden. what did you make of what he said and of course there is now a task lead before his feet. this is something that the nation is going through and he will be out there, outfront and trying to make sure that those emotions don't spike. it is interesting _ emotions don't spike. it is interesting coming i emotions don't spike. it is interesting coming on i emotions don't spike. it 3 interesting coming on the heels of that press conference compared to 48 hours ago where he was going after trump and referring to in this trump. i have never heard president biden referred to him as donald
1:20 am
and i will try to reach out to him later. he also said there is for this and everyone must condemn it. he referred to what happened and he thanked the secret service and said there were possibly injuries in the audience he had no information about that yet i was waiting for facts. about that yet i was waiting forfacts. and something about that yet i was waiting for facts. and something you expect to see in times like this it is important for the president to get out and make a statement, show is face, show support and condemn violence and his campaign issued a statement saying that they were pulling down media ads because this is a time, you do not want the optics of campaigning while your opponent has intentionally survived, president biden said he could not confirm if it was an assassination attempt. it appears like this has already changed the state of this campaign in the way that this will move forward.— will move forward. even the ima . e will move forward. even the image you _ will move forward. even the image you have _ will move forward. even the image you have seen, i will move forward. even the image you have seen, you l will move forward. even the i image you have seen, you will see that image in this campaign of president trump raising his

fist after surviving whatever this is. you will see this dominating, for better or worse, the conversations at the rnc next week and you can bet that this has altered the course of this already very contentious race between these two men. there is no love lost between these two men but obviously president biden right now is not campaigning. he is the president of the united states and he needs to play united in chief and come out and unite. there is no reason this rally should not have been able to take place peacefully. we were discussing the republican national convention earlier due to begin on monday, a gathering of, who's who of the republican party. coming up very shortly. how do you think this would act now, if it does begin on monday, you are saying there is state laws regarding guns in wisconsin that really could factor in here. it is an open curry state so they are within the perimeter of the rnc
1:22 am
and anyone going to these big conventions, there are parameters and parameters and parameters and parameters and parameters and parameters and parameters and they usually block off several city blocks. if you are outside the building you are allowed to carry a gun. it is an open curry state. it was allowed or at least it was until today. you must remember that this is an incredibly pro gun party and you will see a lot of lawmakers find themselves in an interesting spot now where they will obviously want to condemn the violence but they are probably not going to change their stance on gun rights and you heard that from some witnesses talking to saying this is why i need to carry a gun, this is why i need to protect my family. incidents and violence like this because in their minds and in the minds of a lot of people, a lot of the people i grew up with in the midwest, the only thing that beats a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun and i think that is a message we will hear even louder next week at the rnc. of course this is a country on edge and we have just watched here in washington, dc the nato summit and major leaders here
1:23 am
from all over the world. this is a country where the rnc coming up and there could be another debate, the democratic national convention coming up, how do you anticipate the way security protocols might change in the next three or four months?— in the next three or four months? , months? the interesting thing about the races _ months? the interesting thing about the races for _ months? the interesting thing about the races for the i months? the interesting thing about the races for the first i about the races for the first time you have a former president was not incumbent who is running. it depends on the candidate. obama got secret service a little earlier than usual because he was receiving so many threats. so he got secret service because of the little earlier but normally, historically they do not normally get secret service protection until they are the official candidate. this is different because former president trump is a former president so he already had secret service protection which means when you go into one of these rallies it is essentially like you are going into a presidential event and anyone who covers this nose have to get there at the crack of dawn,
1:24 am
you have to drop your gear because dogs come in and sweep the facility for any bombs or ied devices. they are talking, your witnesses are talking about someone climbing onto a building with a visual proximity of the rally. normally when we cover these you can see secret service on every visible rooftop so that an interesting detail on why that roof top, if that is correct, was not covered and how someone was able to get up there. even some of our live shots from roof tops have to be swept by secret service and all equipment must be looked at by secret service because there is always a potential to take the high ground and take a shot. lode high ground and take a shot. we hear now from the former president bill clinton from social media writing this "violence has no place in america especially in our political process. hilary, hillary and i are thankful that president trump is safe and heartbroken for all those affected by the attack in
1:25 am
pennsylvania today and grateful for the swift action of the us secret service. it is telling, we have heard from several former presidents, president obama releasing a statement earlier and bill clinton and we've also heard from the current president. it we've also heard from the current president. it would be an aberration _ current president. it would be an aberration of _ current president. it would be an aberration of this - current president. it would be an aberration of this was i current president. it would be an aberration of this was not. an aberration of this was not what you saw happen. these individuals do not agree with each other, there is no love lost between them but this is the kind of thing that they do not want to spiral because this impacts everyone on both sides of the aisle. and the heated rhetoric of this campaign, i am sure contributed to feelings that possibly could have led to this because i have been in dc for 17 years now and it used to not be like this. republicans and democrats disagreed on policy but agreed as human beings and as is buttons further and further apart people take extreme action and nobody wants that. so if anything good can come out of this, perhaps it could be a cooling down from the top with some of this rhetoric to try

this change? politicians have long talked about _ this change? politicians have long talked about the i this change? politicians have | long talked about the concern around violence. we saw the speaker of the house nancy pelosi releasing the statement, saying that she was sending thoughts and prayers to donald trump and she knows what that violence is like. earlier this year, a man was jailed for the attack that he carried out at her home in california against her home in california against her husband a couple of years ago, so security is always tight whenever you have high—profile politicians and, of course, donald trump is the former president, which means he has secret service detail with him all the time. and as we still try to verify and find out exactly what happened at the rally, was it a security lapse, which is what one witness suggested, in the interview with my colleague gary o'donoghue, although we have to stress those early witness reports have to still be verified but if indeed that does bear out to be true, there will be lots of questions asked about the security around mr trump and when, indeed, he does come here, i can imagine that

would only be ramped up further. security is tied here anyway and when we would walking around and going to the different venues the convention will be held, we have passes at have to go through security and that was always going to happen and it will not change but i do suspect in terms of what's happened tonight, in pennsylvania, there will be, they will be just so incredibly on top of it, on top of security here to make sure that nothing like that can happen here. ., ., ., ., ., here. you would have to imagine security there — here. you would have to imagine security there would _ here. you would have to imagine security there would be - here. you would have to imagine security there would be so i security there would be so tight, it would only get tighter. nomia iqbal in milwaukee, the city where that republican national convention is scheduled to take place on monday. that's of course where we were expecting the former president donald trump to arrive as well. thank you very much. i want to set the scene here and update our viewers who mayjust bejoining us here and update our viewers who mayjust be joining us at this hour. former president donald trump
