when we would anyway and when we would walking around and going to the different venues the convention will be held, we have passes at have to go through security and that was always going to happen and it will not change but i do suspect in terms of what's happened tonight, in pennsylvania, there will be, they will be just so incredibly on top of it, on top of security here to make sure that nothing like that can happen here. i, nothing like that can happen here. ., ., ., ., ., here. you would have to imagine security there — here. you would have to imagine security there would _ here. you would have to imagine security there would be - here. you would have to imagine security there would be so - security there would be so tight, it would only get tighter. nomia iqbal in milwaukee, the city where that republican national convention is scheduled to take place on monday. that's of course where we were expecting the former president donald trump to arrive as well. thank you very much. i want to set the scene here and update our viewers who mayjust bejoining us here and update our viewers who mayjust be joining us at this hour. former president donald trump has been rushed off stage

screaming. that was that very scary moment when those shots rang out and you could see the reaction around the president from the supporters in the stands as well. i want to let you know those pictures in the right corner of your screen are live images of the scene around that rally in pennsylvania. we've heard from our north american correspondent gary o'donoghue that that is an active crime scene and there is an active investigation by the secret service and that area has now been locked down. the president spoke about the incident a short time ago. here's that address. i'v e i've been thoroughly briefed by all of the agencies of the federal government on the situation based on what we know now. i have tried to get a hold of donald. he is with his doctors. apparently, he is
1:33 am
doing well. i plan on talking to them shortly. i hope. when i get back to the telephone. look, there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's sick. it's one of the reasons we have to unite this country. we cannot allow for this to be happening, we cannot be like this, we cannot condone this and so, i want to thank the secret service and all of the agencies, including the state agencies, including the state agencies, have engaged in making sure that the people — we have more detailed account relative to other people may be injured in the audience i don't have all the detail, we will make that available to you and may be able to come back a little later tonight but we will put out a statement if we don't, if i'm not able to everyone if it's not convenient for you or the bottom line is the trump rally is a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problems but the idea — the idea that this political violence or violence in america

1:36 am
listen to the rally, right? we could not see him but we could hear him. so, we walked up and probably 5—7 minutes of trump speaking, i'm estimating here, i have no idea, but we noticed a guy crawling, army, you know, they're crawling up the roof of they're crawling up the roof of the building, beside us, 50 feet away from us. so we are standing there and we are pointing at the guy crawling up the roof. * ., ., the roof. and he had a gun, riuht? the roof. and he had a gun, right? he — the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had _ the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a _ the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a rifle. - the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a rifle. you . right? he had a rifle. you could clearly _ right? he had a rifle. you could clearly see - right? he had a rifle. you could clearly see him - right? he had a rifle. you| could clearly see him with right? he had a rifle. you l could clearly see him with a rifle, absolutely. we are pointing at him, the police are down there running around around the ground and we are like hey, man, there is a guy on the roof with a rifle and the police like huck? what? they didn't know what was going on. we're like what he of the roof, we can see him right here, we see him, you know, he's crawling! and next thing you know, i'm like, i'm thinking to myself why is trump still speaking? why have they
1:37 am
not pulled him off the stage? i'm standing there pointing at him for, you know, two or three minutes, secret service is looking at us from the top of the barn, i'm pointing at the roof, just standing there like this. and next thing you know, five shots rang out.— five shots rang out. your son for your— five shots rang out. your son for your certain _ five shots rang out. your son for your certain the - five shots rang out. your son for your certain the shots - five shots rang out. your son l for your certain the shots came from _ for your certain the shots came from that— for your certain the shots came from that route?— from that route? hundred %. hundred %- _ from that route? hundred %. hundred %. it _ from that route? hundred %. hundred %. it was _ from that route? hundred %. hundred %. it was up - from that route? hundred %. hundred %. it was up there l from that route? hundred %. i hundred %. it was up there for a coule hundred %. it was up there for a ample of _ hundred %. it was up there for a couple of minutes, _ hundred %. it was up there for a couple of minutes, you - hundred %. it was up there for a couple of minutes, you saw i a couple of minutes, you saw him _ a couple of minutes, you saw him up — a couple of minutes, you saw him up for— a couple of minutes, you saw him up for a couple of minutes? at least— him up for a couple of minutes? at least three or four minutes. you were telling the secret service? _ you were telling the secret service? ~ service? were telling the olice, service? were telling the police. we _ service? were telling the police, we were - service? were telling the police, we were telling i service? were telling the i police, we were telling him service? were telling the - police, we were telling him the secret service who are looking at us from the top of the barn, they were looking at us for the whole time i was only by the tree, binoculars..— whole time i was only by the tree, binoculars.. because they see him? _ tree, binoculars.. because they see him? are — tree, binoculars.. because they see him? are we _ tree, binoculars.. because they see him? are we not— tree, binoculars.. because they see him? are we not because i tree, binoculars.. because they i see him? are we not because the wa the see him? are we not because the way the roof. _ see him? are we not because the way the roof, the _ see him? are we not because the way the roof, the slow _ see him? are we not because the way the roof, the slow point, - way the roof, the slow point, he was behind where they could see but why is there not secret service on all of these roofs here? i mean, this is not a big place. it here? i mean, this is not a big lace. ., , here? i mean, this is not a big lace, ., , ., here? i mean, this is not a big lace, ., ., here? i mean, this is not a big lace. ., ., * place. it was a north american correspondent _ place. it was a north american correspondent gary _ place. it was a north american | correspondent gary o'donoghue speaking with one eyewitness outside of the rally and i want to bring you some information we're getting now from a us
1:38 am
news partner cbs, they are reporting the secret service is currently adding more manpower, boosting their details to other of their protected teas and, of course, they are the high—level politicians across the us and are confirming that as we heard from that eyewitness, a suspect was on top of a shed nearby or an elevated platform is either the security perimeter outside of that rally —— protectees. it's still being determined if donald trump was in fact hit by a bullet or whether it was debris. we did see the blood on his right ear after the shooting. we are working to determine what caused the bleeding, whether it may have been a fragment of glass or a bullet and you see the moment there where he does reach for his ear. you also getting confirmation it was a male suspect, that the shooter has been taken out by a secret service sniper. there were multiple other people injured at the event and they have been
1:39 am
taken to the hospital. joining me live is our correspendent tom bateman. he's been reporting on some of the reactions coming into this event taking place.— the reactions coming into this event taking place. what's the latest? let's _ event taking place. what's the latest? let's recap _ event taking place. what's the latest? let's recap first - event taking place. what's the latest? let's recap first on - latest? let's recap first on president biden because we have the written statement and then that short news briefing that he gave afterwards, he is in delaware, he had flown after his own rally in michigan last night. as i have been pointing out, in that verbal statement in a fairly sort of unprecedented moment, no—one has heard before, referring to as *donald', saying that he was trying to get hold of him. and across the political centre —— spectrum we have heard comments and calm, this is already an incredibly female moment in the united states and now this —— febrile. we heard from president biden, saying that he
1:40 am
is grateful to hear that donald trump is safe and doing well. there was no place for this kind of violence in america. in the family of donald trump, we had earlierfrom donald trump jr, we read out the statement, he said he had just spoken to his father on the phone, saying he is in great spirits and will never stop fighting to save america, no matter what the radical left throws at him, that's from donald trump radical left throws at him, that's from donald trumer, that's from donald trump jr, and that's from donald trumer, and in the that's from donald trump jr, and in the last few that's from donald trumer, and in the last few moments eric trump tweeting this is the fight that america needs, he says, and what i think is already becoming a sort of iconic image being, you know, across social media now is one of the still images of donald trump bloodied, his fist in the air, below an american flag. eric trump tweeting that picture. we have had former presidents in the last half—an—hour, barack obama, there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy, he says. don't know
1:41 am
exactly get what happened and we should all be that former president trump wasn't seriously hurt and it goes on to say we should use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in politics, michelle and i, he says, wishing him a quick recovery. otherformer recovery. other former president, recovery. otherformer president, george w bush and bill clinton, doing similar comments.— bill clinton, doing similar comments. striking isn't it, tom, comments. striking isn't it, tom. does _ comments. striking isn't it, tom, does he _ comments. striking isn't it, tom, does he not - comments. striking isn't it, tom, does he not only - comments. striking isn't it, i tom, does he not only visiting presidentjoe but also several otherformer presidents presidentjoe but also several other former presidents across the political spectrum coming out and speaking out very quickly after this event? very, very quickly — quickly after this event? very, very quickly indeed _ quickly after this event? very, very quickly indeed and - quickly after this event? very, very quickly indeed and i - quickly after this event? very, i very quickly indeed and i mean, we should also remember that four of the last six presidents of the united states of america have been targets of some kind of assault or attack during their time in office. this is their time in office. this is the fundamental reality about all of this. i mentioned those statements from george w bush, targeted by an attacker in
1:42 am
tbilisi in georgia in 2005, somebody tossed a grenade towards him i didn't explode. bill clinton, the white house was subjected to gunfire back in 1994 when he was president. and so, i think these messages of wanting to try to contain the situation, given the bitter, bitter divisions in this country, particularly over the last 4— eight years. what we've seen during this presidential campaign is things becoming increasingly fractious and febrile. the democratic campaign in crisis and now this particular moment and i think there is no surprise that we are seeing across the bipartisanly divide now a lot of calls, as i said before copy you can always copy and paste a lot of these messages, saying there is absolutely no place for political violence in america but, you know, whether or not there is the ability to sort of contain this now, i think, is another question and
1:43 am
people, as we've heard from the eyewitnesses that gary spoke to, that moment where we heard from one of those who was at the rally, the fear and anxiety in their voice about this sort of sense of an uncontrolled situation i think would be echoed by many people absorbing this news at the moment. tom bateman, thank you and i want to bring in this from the communications director of the trump campaign. this is a statement released earlier. the office of keir starmer, the british prime minister, has reacted to the apparent shooting at donald trump's rally.
1:44 am
sir keir starmerjust returning to the uk from his first official visit to the us as the new uk prime minister. he was in washington for the nato summit. with me is christina ruffini. with maybe pausing and looking at this moment as we were beginning to learn the details and its sinking in, whatan incredible moment this is, not only for the country but for the campaign? it only for the country but for the campaign?— only for the country but for the camaiun? , . ., the campaign? it is and it made me think as _ the campaign? it is and it made me think as you _ the campaign? it is and it made me think as you are _ the campaign? it is and it made me think as you are talking - me think as you are talking about your new uk prime minister making his first official visit to the us, we spent the week over in nato talking to a variety of different ministers and leaders from these different countries. they were already very nervous about the us political situation and i don't think this is going to allay any of these concerns. this is not something any of us, i've been
1:45 am
in dc for 1917 years or something like that and this is not anything we've seen, even as political rhetoric has gotten more pointed and i was about shooting at the congressional baseball game, covering that, this is not a non—violent country, i've covered all my shootings that i care to talk about here but you don't expect it at a rally like this because there is secret service there, there is security and you expect them to be checking rooftops and this is — i guarantee none of the reporters and the crowd today were clear through and set up a gear thinking this is what they were going to witness today. anyone as you mention who has been to one of these rallies knows how tight the security is. can you just walk us through the protocol and what the security is like a of rallies that feature someone like donald trump orjoe biden? this is usually an incredibly locked down area, somewhere where you are not able to get anywhere near an event with a rifle or a gun or any kind of weapon. it rifle or a gun or any kind of weapon-— rifle or a gun or any kind of weaon. , . ~ , weapon. it is and keep in mind former president _ weapon. it is and keep in mind former president trump - weapon. it is and keep in mind former president trump is - weapon. it is and keep in mind former president trump is just| former president trump is just that, former president, so the security at his rallies is
1:46 am
going to be even higher than it would be for a regular candidate trying to get in the mix and trying to win the nomination because it already has the presidential protection so these events are treated essentially like a presidential event, you have to go through a lot of times you have to go through max, i don't know about this one but anyone who's going to be anywhere near the stage has been checked out, peggy has been swept, they respond dogs are coming, if you are going to be that you have to preset sometimes up to eight hours in advance that they have time go through everything and the perimeter is usually really, really wide, which is why that i witness you reporters spoke to such a remarkable interview to such a remarkable interview to me because the fact that first of all, they were able to see, they said they couldn't see, they said they couldn't see him but they could hear the former president trump member of, right, and they were able to see this, as they say, an individual climb up to the roof. i'm surprised there would be a blank roof anywhere within the proximity of these events because normally, you can look around and you can see the footage of these events and look on every rooftop and you can see a secret service agent or local law enforcement agency or local law enforcement agency or somebody in the leadership in the law enforcement
1:47 am
community on those ribs to prevent these exact kind of things. prevent these exact kind of thins. ~ * , ., ., things. we've been hearing from a north american _ things. we've been hearing from a north american correspondent| a north american correspondent in milwaukee nomia iqbal about the situation there. it is important to note the republican national convention is meant to start on monday and this is where most of the republican party will be, of course donald trump is expected there, his family, other candidates, potential choice for his running mate, how do you think this will all change now, what we see take place in wisconsin if it does? this now, what we see take place in wisconsin if it does?— wisconsin if it does? this was already going _ wisconsin if it does? this was already going to _ wisconsin if it does? this was already going to be _ wisconsin if it does? this was already going to be a - wisconsin if it does? this was already going to be a very - already going to be a very tense, very heightened kind of environment with donald trump not of shrinking violet, his is what he speaks and his republican party tends to have varied points of language and has had very point of language about this president and the democrats. that being said as we discussed at such an open kerry staight and the something that the city of what he can do about that, the state law supersedes any regulations. even within the perimeter of where they are blocking traffic and closing down streets of the rnc, people will be able to
1:48 am
open carry guns and you have to wonder if you are a rattled a member of congress as pro— nra as you may be, if you really want to be walking through the security lines and pass all those crowds, knowing that people can have weapons in those crowds, is going to put them in a very precarious situation now that being said, i would expect to hear a lot of the sensitive from speakers next week, i would get a sense from president trump, former president trump that he has survived this and has been put upon but it's already change the campaign and the biting campaign is pulling down ads, sure they wanted to be ramping up sure they wanted to be ramping up their message ahead of next week —— biden campaign. making sure the messages countering whatever comes out of milwaukee and that will be tricky now because i don't want to be seen as capitalising on violence against another political opponent, especially when he is a former president. i opponent, especially when he is a former president.— a former president. i 'ust wanted to i a former president. i 'ust wanted to ask * a former president. i 'ust wanted to ask you i a former president. i just l wanted to ask you actually a former president. i just - wanted to ask you actually how you think changes things going ahead for the presidentjoe biden, not only in terms of his security but in the way that he conducts his campaign? i think
1:49 am
it's tricky- _ conducts his campaign? i think it's tricky. again, _ conducts his campaign? i think it's tricky. again, you - conducts his campaign? i think it's tricky. again, you never. it's tricky. again, you never want to look like you are taking advantage of a tragedy, especially a political opponent, as we talked about earlier in past campaigns even when a teddy roosevelt survived an assassination attempt, his two other opponents, because it was running as a third party, also suspended the campaigns until he was able to go back on the trail. if you see former president trump on the stage of the rnc next week, then you have to wonder if president biden's campaign really does need to suspend or if it is back to business as usual but i don't think it will be business as usual, you know, it has been as usual, you know, it has been a heck of a leader we have had, issues and concerns of president biden's health and we have debated without the press conference at aitor where we seek to cut back a little bit and that was the prevailing conversation leading to this week and now, this is what everyone is going to be talking about. * , ., , ., everyone is going to be talking about. *, ., , ., ., about. it's really the tone of this campaign _ about. it's really the tone of this campaign is _ about. it's really the tone of this campaign is really - about. it's really the tone of. this campaign is really change now obviously in the past couple of days. before we move on, ijust want couple of days. before we move on, i just want to couple of days. before we move on, ijust want to read that now, we're getting a statement, this is coming from donald trump, this is from his truth
1:50 am
social account. trump, this is from his truth socialaccount. he trump, this is from his truth social account. he has released a statement and i will read for you. says, "i want to thank the united states secret service and all of law enforcement for the rapid response the shooting thatjust the rapid response the shooting that just a the rapid response the shooting thatjust a place in butler pennsylvania. that was the site of that rally. it i want to examine condolences to the family of the person the rally was killed. and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. we are still waiting to confirm the number of other casualties or people that may have been killed there. is incredible that such an act can take place in our country, he says. nothing is known at this time another shooter who is now dead. he says then i was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear again, this coming direct from donald trump. i knew immediately that something was wrong and i heard a whizzing sound. shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. much bleeding took place i realise that what was happening and that what was happening and that he ends his message with god bless america. that's coming from donald trump from his sushko full —— truth social
1:51 am
just coming in there. obviously, this was a very scary scene there, our senior north american correspondent gary o'donoghue was at the rally and was covering it from outside. he and his crew were able to actually capture the moment as they were taking cover when they heard those shots ring out. let's ta ke let's take a look at that moment. let's take a look at that moment-— let's take a look at that moment. ~ . ., moment. we are about ten minutes — moment. we are about ten minutes into _ moment. we are about ten minutes into donald - moment. we are about ten i minutes into donald trump's speech and while we were just about to go live on the bbc world service, we heard some shots fired, probably a few hundred metres from where we were standing, probably about half a dozen shots we heard. there was a woman shouting that someone had been shooting, a guide came by and said he thought they had been a couple of snipers but he wasn't sure. we're just waiting to see if things are cleared and as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which is not
1:52 am
ideal but it's a shelter we have at the moment and that's what we're to ascertain, what happened. i think the speech has stopped. i cannot hear donald trump speaking anymore. scary scenes, uncertain moments after a series of shots were heard at that rally in pennsylvania. that was in america correspondent gary o'donoghue without by the event and i believe many thousands of people who were inside that event, terrifying moment as they watched the former president then fall to the ground and be escorted away secret service. we have now that statement again coming from donald trump from his truth social event and we will see if we can bring it up for you and read it for you there again.
1:53 am
we did see those images of course of donald trump reaching for his ear. later images showed blood on his ear. that's coming from donald trump directly and we've heard from his campaign, saying that he is fine, he has been treated and that's the latest that we know from donald trump. earlier, i spoke with former secret service agent and security expert charles marino.
1:54 am
there's obviously a lot of speculation at point about what's been taking place, what kind of security response there might be. if you could kind of walk us through the details that we do know here — help would the secret service respond, in your experience, to a shooting at an event like this? ., , , , this? former president trump has a high _ this? former president trump has a high level— this? former president trump has a high level security - this? former president trump has a high level security for i has a high level security for two reasons. one, he is a recent former president out of office and he is also the presumptive republican nominee. here one week before the republican convention. so he carries a lot of resources around with him. on the security side. and here on this site, i can tell you you've got three layers of security. you've got this in a bubble that you saw respond to the shooting and the former president to shield him from additional gunfire —— this inner bubble. a middle perimeter which also includes
1:55 am
screening everybody who came into that rally for things like weapons. which is why i find it interesting that we're not hearing where this shooter was. was the inside this screen area was he further away from outside?— was he further away from outside? ,, ,, ~ . , ., outside? crosstalk. just to “um - outside? crosstalk. just to “um in outside? crosstalk. just to jump in here. _ outside? crosstalk. just to jump in here, charles. - jump in here, charles. crosstalk.— jump in here, charles. crosstalk. , ., crosstalk. outer perimeter of law enforcement. _ crosstalk. outer perimeter of law enforcement. i— crosstalk. outer perimeter of law enforcement. i think - crosstalk. outer perimeter of law enforcement. i think it - crosstalk. outer perimeter of law enforcement. i think it is i law enforcement. i think it is an important _ law enforcement. i think it is an important point, - law enforcement. i think it is an important point, we've i law enforcement. i think it is i an important point, we've heard from several witnesses who have told the bbc that they personally saw someone on the roof on a building near where this outdoor belly was taking place. somebody with a rifle. we can work to verify obviously those reports but multiple people have told the bbc that. if it is, indeed, the case, what does that tell you, as a secret service expert, what kinds of plans are in place for somebody who might be outside the event? obviously within the
1:56 am
event there is an incredible amount of security but is at the same for buildings outside an event like this?— an event like this? yes, it is. which is _ an event like this? yes, it is. which is why _ an event like this? yes, it is. which is why the _ an event like this? yes, it is. which is why the former - which is why the former president and you hear many eyewitnesses at the scene describing seeing the secret service counter snipers on nearby roofs. and you know what? it does not sound odd to me, what you are describing, of where people have told news reporters where they saw somebody because if you look at the rate of gunfire that you can hear, is only one hit, what appears to be one hit. what that tells me is that it was a greater distance involved. of acquiring the target, being the former president. and having, you know, somewhere of six or seven mrs and only one hit so
1:57 am
there are counter measures in place to have to catch these types of things —— misses. in this case, it appears they may not have worked but i can tell you the fbi will come in and the fbi is going to leave the investigation because this was an assassination attempt. the secret service will hand over the investigation to the fbi. they will stay a part of the investigation. and this valley area and the location of where this shooter was now becomes a crime scene. and they will work it exactly as a crime scene. they will interview witnesses, they will look for ballistics and all the other things that are associated to make the case of what possibly went wrong here. ~ ., of what possibly went wrong here. ~ . ., ., ., here. we have heard from our reorter here. we have heard from our reporter on — here. we have heard from our reporter on the _ here. we have heard from our reporter on the ground, - here. we have heard from our reporter on the ground, garyl reporter on the ground, gary o'donoghue, who says the area where he is right now outside of that rally has been blocked down for security concerns. i
1:58 am
want to ask you, in terms of what happens after those shots ring out and we're at video right now of secret service on stage with the former president, they are guarding him, what are the protocols that are in place once there is a suspected assassination attempt? what happens next? you have two attempt? what happens next? ym. have two things going on here. sound, the sound of gunfire. which all secret service agents are very familiar with and know to respond to. and then you have the visual of the former president grabbing the right side of his face by his ear. so, as they are seeing these two things happen, the agents, and you can hear it on the video, they start screaming at the former president to get down. to drop to the ground. while they are simultaneously responding so that they can put
