media and people in both parties, when you use rhetoric that somehow one presidential candidate is an existential threat to democracy, and anyone who has used the type of rhetoric that doesn't take a step back and say, "maybe i have to write down some of these things to instead ofjust being indignant that somebody may have called them out for that type of rhetoric, but something also that needs to get coverage. when we individualise violent behaviour on one political side of the spectrum, without calling it out on the other, those individuals are no better than the ones they are covering on the ones they are covering on the other side and continually accuse of ratcheting up the rhetoric so i'm really appreciating the comments of my colleague here on the air with me but at the same time, there has to be a recognition in the news media across the board

that using rhetoric like this does contribute to the violent activities that we have seen in the united states of america over the last few years, including the too that i personally experienced. congressman, i was both of those — congressman, i was both of those events as i watched your college — those events as i watched your college get medevaced of the baseball field in virginia and i baseball field in virginia and i was — baseball field in virginia and i was standing outside the capitoi— i was standing outside the capitol on january i was standing outside the capitol onjanuary six, i was standing outside the capitol on january six, so i was standing outside the capitol onjanuary six, so may we att— capitol onjanuary six, so may we all figure out a way together to.. we all figure out a way together to. . we all figure out a way toaether to.. ,, ,, : together to.. crosstalk. i completely _ together to.. crosstalk. i completely agree. - together to.. crosstalk. i completely agree. it - together to.. crosstalk. i completely agree. it is - together to.. crosstalk. i completely agree. it is not| together to.. crosstalk. | | completely agree. it is not a nice place to be and it would be great if this were — if people could focus on ratcheting down. i agree, across the _ ratcheting down. i agree, across the political - ratcheting down. i agree, - across the political spectrum, in journalism, across the political spectrum, injournalism, everybody has across the political spectrum, in journalism, everybody has to be able — in journalism, everybody has to be able to— in journalism, everybody has to be able to speak their piece in a polite — be able to speak their piece in a polite and constructive way and that's what this country was — and that's what this country was founded on and that's what you're _ was founded on and that's what you're hearing in the background of some of these speeches but, you know, more and more. _ speeches but, you know, more and more, that's not the focus and more, that's not the focus and it's— and more, that's not the focus and it's not— and more, that's not the focus

the end, we still sore and in the aftermath of what happened that day injune of 2017, i went on every news media outlet i could and i said the rhetoric coming from both sides has got to stop. and we don't talk enough what happens in washington where republicans and democrats agree. and it's got an even worse since then. and they coverage has got to lead to some self reflection within the media apparatus as a whole. and, frankly, someone like yourself that's involved in the media, you need to call it out when it happens on both sides of the political spectrum. when you start to see those who are in your profession, just like i will always ask to call out things that my former colleagues say, you should do the same. rodney, i'm you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious _ you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious to _ you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious to ask _ you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious to ask you _ you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious to ask you as - you should do the same. rodney, i'm curious to ask you as a - i'm curious to ask you as a former congressman what do you make of the events of january six. those were events, of course, very violent events in the centre of our nation's capitol and those were events that were not called out by the

president at the time, donald trump, and now former president trump, and now former president trump who have been campaigning essentially a change in the history books here, rebranding the people that participated as heroes, saying that he wants them, he calls them political prisoners and he wants them freed. does that at all, do you think, contribute to the kind of charged atmosphere you've been describing? it of charged atmosphere you've been describing?— been describing? it does. of course it _ been describing? it does. of course it does. _ been describing? it does. of course it does. and - been describing? it does. of course it does. and as - been describing? it does. of course it does. and as a - been describing? it does. of. course it does. and as a matter of fact, i'm completely on record, saying anybody who breached the capitol that day and attach the brave police officers, whose brothers and sisters saved my life and everyone else's life on the baseball field in 2017, they should be held accountable to the fall extent of the law. but let's also hold people accountable for trying to break down white house fences, for trying to break into federal buildings and cannot be a 2—tiered system ofjustice that puts red shirts on certain types ofjustice and blue shirts on others. breaking the law should mean that you broke
3:45 am
the law and everyone should be held accountable equally. and there is a lot of americans right now who believe that that is not the case. and, frankly, that that is part of the problem that we are witnessing in america right now. it's leading to nutjobs like a gentleman today and those who walked into the capitol and committed violent acts against our brave officers and that gunman nutjob had tried to kill me and my friends, but the end result of calling out politicians for being existential threats to democracy. those are the — that is the end result of making it seem, in the 24—hour news cycle, that every decision in america is based upon whether you are in a republican or democrat. that is not what has made america great. and i will call at anyone who tries to use the violent rhetoric that we've seen —— call out. if it's

seen —— call out. if its president trump, i will say to him, if its president biden, whojust said president him, if its president biden, who just said president trump should be in a bull's—eyejust a few days ago. those are the types of things that those who are writing those comments, those who are making those comments, those who may work for those individuals, they need to take a step back and ratcheted down and when they do those comments, people in the media need to call them up for it, regardless of whether they think that person would be a better president than the other one. * . . . better president than the other one. * , , ., . ., one. it's been a charged campaign. _ one. it's been a charged campaign, it's _ one. it's been a charged campaign, it's a - one. it's been a charged i campaign, it's a discussion that needs to happen, is an important one in something that i'm sure the nation will be happening over the coming days and weeks and months. former congressman rodney davis of illinois and christina ruffini here in the former white house correspondent in the studio, thank you to you both. think ou. we've been speaking to our correspondent gary o'donoghue throught the night. he was at the rally and he and his crew were able to capture the moment as they were taking cover. let's take a look.

we are about ten minutes into donald trump's speech and while we were just about to go live on the bbc world service, we heard some shots fired probably a few hundred metres from where we were standing, probably about half a dozen shots we heard. there was a woman shouting that someone had been shooting. a guy came by and said that he thought they had been a couple of snipers, but he wasn't sure. and we're just waiting to see if things have cleared and we're just, as you can see, we're on the ground behind our car, which is not ideal, but that's the shelter we have at the moment and that's what we're trying to ascertain, what happened. i think the speech has stopped. i cannot hear donald trump speaking any more. the senior correspondent outside the rally as this
