you can see, we are cleared and as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which is not ideal, but that's at the shelter we have at the moment. there is no place in america for this kind — there is no place in america for this kind of— there is no place in america for this kind of violence, it is sick, sick _ this kind of violence, it is sick, sick it's— this kind of violence, it is sick, sick it's one _ this kind of violence, it is sick, sick. it's one of the reasons why we have _ sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to _ sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite — sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. hello, i'm maryam moshiri. donald trump has survived an assassination attempt at a rally in pennsylvania. before we start this full hour with reports and analysis, let's first show you the moment donald trump was shot. the fbi and local police say the gunman, who was on a nearby roof, killed a spectator and wounded two others before being shot dead by snipers. and as you can see, security agents rushed to protect the former us president and hurried him offstage with blood on his face. in a social media post, mr trump said a bullet
10:01 am
had pierced his ear. he is now in newjersey, where he plans to spend the night at his private golf club. here are pictures obtained by entertainment news outlet tmz, which shows the exact moment the shooter, who is lying who is lying on his stomach, lines up his shot from the roof. there are questions about how he was able to do that without being stopped. and the government was shot moments after that happened. —— the gunman was shot. so this is what we know about what happened. the attempt on the life of the former president took place as mr trump was speaking to crowds in the state of pennsylvania. gunshots were heard and trump was led to safety with blood on his face. he appears to have been struck on the outside of his ear. he wasn't seriously hurt. the attacker killed one spectator at the rally and two others are critically injured. the fbi and local police
10:02 am
said the attacker was killed at the scene. agencies are investigating his identity and motive. the fbi have named the shooter as 20—year—old thomas matthew crooks. president biden called the attack "sick" and has said there is no place in america for this kind of violence. speaking at a press conference fbi special agent kevin rojek gave this update this evening, we had what calling an assassination attempt against our former_ assassination attempt against our former president, donald trump. it is still— former president, donald trump. it is still an_ former president, donald trump. it is still an active crime scene. as i mentioned, — is still an active crime scene. as i mentioned, we have a number of agents _ mentioned, we have a number of agents on — mentioned, we have a number of agents on scene. we are also working closely— agents on scene. we are also working closely with _ agents on scene. we are also working closely with other federal agencies, our state _ closely with other federal agencies, our state partners and our local police _ our state partners and our local police partners as well. we do not currently — police partners as well. we do not currently have an identified motive, although— currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working — although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify — working tirelessly to attempt to identify what the motive was. speaking at the same

press conference, pennsylvania state police lieutenant colonel george bivens gave this update. let me describe the scene that we had over— let me describe the scene that we had over there. there was a grandstand, a very large area, a lot of people there. the former president had come out and had begun to speak shortly after six o'clock this evening, and within about ten to 15 minutes, a number of sounds were heard and it became apparent that shots were being fired in that direction. it was a chaotic scene. law enforcement acted heroically, quickly identifying and neutralising the threat, as well as responding to assist the various victims. our senior north america correspondent, gary o'donoghue, was outside the venue where trump's rally took place. this is his report. that's a little bit old, that chart. . ..
10:04 am
it was a few minutes into donald trump's speech when a volley of shots rang out. gunshots get down, get down! the former president can be seen clutching at the right side of his head, after that he hits the ground as the secret service pile on top of him. theirjob is to put their bodies between him and the shooter. there was panic among the thousands of people inside the rally. many ran, many threw themselves to the ground. donald trump was seen getting to his feet and raising a fist to his supporters. signs of blood at his right ear. we were about ten minutes into donald trump's speech and while we were just about to go live on the bbc world service, we heard some shots fired, probably a few hundred metres from where we were standing,
10:05 am
probably about half a dozen shots we heard. a woman was shouting that someone had been shooting, a guy came by and said that he thought there had been a couple of snipers but he was not sure. we are just waiting to see if things have cleared and as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which is not ideal, but that is the shelter we have at the moment and that is what we are trying to ascertain, what has happened. i think the speech has stopped, i cannot hear donald trump speaking any more. as people streamed out of the venue they told us what they had seen. one man, a local business owner, described how he noticed a man he believed to be the shooter climbing onto a low roof nearby, holding a weapon. we noticed the guy crawling, bear crawling up the roof of the building beside us. 50 feet away from us. we were standing there and pointing at the guy crawling up the roof.
10:06 am
he had a gun? he had a rifle. we could clearly see that. absolutely. we were pointing at him and the police were down there and running around on the ground and we were saying there was a guy on the roof and the police were like "huh?" they did not know what was going on. president trump was taken straight to the local butler county hospital. shortly afterwards he released a statement paying tribute to law enforcement and expressing condolences for those killed and injured. the statement said... the secret service also released a statement, which said...
10:07 am
condemnation was swift. president biden had this to say. the idea that there is political violence and violence in america like this is just unheard of. everybody, everybody must condemn it. everybody. i will keep you informed and if i speak to donald i will let you know that as well. but so far it appears he is doing well. the biden campaign is suspending its activities at the time being. but donald trump has indicated he plans to go to the republican national convention on monday as planned. in the meantime, investigations will continue. everyone asking, how could an attempted political assassination be part of modern day america? let's speak to the bbc*s

jenny kumah, who is in pennsylvania. jenny, what more do we know at this point _ jenny, what more do we know at this point about— jenny, what more do we know at this point about the investigation into this attack? ~ point about the investigation into this attack?— this attack? well, we are 'ust outside the i this attack? well, we are 'ust outside the cordoned i this attack? well, we are just outside the cordoned area, i this attack? well, we are just i outside the cordoned area, you this attack? well, we are just - outside the cordoned area, you can see the police cars marking the border, the fbi has released some details about the shooter. matthew crooks, who was 20, from bethel park about an hour's drive from here. there is a no—fly zone around that area. he has been named as a suspect. what we do know about him very little but we know he was a registered republican voter, he made lytical donations to a progressive committee on the day that president biden was sworn into office. the republican team say that donald trump is doing well, he has received treatment, he has travelled back to
10:09 am
his home in newjersey and there has been widespread condemnation across the political spectrum about this. president biden in his statement described what happened as sick. he is returned to washington, dc. he said he will receive an update later today. we understand that the biden team have pulled or are in the process of pulling their political adverts. some tramp supporters are pointing the finger of blame at the democrats for what's happened. —— trumper*s supporters. nigel farage was speaking earlier on the laura kuenssberg programme and he said he was upset by the attack on his good friend and he said that the nasty narrative put out by liberals who oppose him almost encourages this type of behaviour. we have been speaking to people here, there is a lot of shock, disbelief and anger at what happened. he spoke to a hotel owner who said that people who had
10:10 am
been staying there after the rally feel scared by what has happened. there were chaotic scenes here, the police and a conference earlier said officers acted heroically, but questions remain around the response to this. how did someone with an assault rifle climbed to a position on a roof less than 200 metres away from the former president? we heard from the former president? we heard from an eyewitness who said he could see somebody and told the police about it, so questions around the response and how well resourced security was at the rally. the speaker of the house has said the house will do a full investigation and this is a seismic moment, a historic moment, we haven't seen a political act of violence like this since ronald reagan was shot in 1981, and this town in pennsylvania will be known for what's happened here. , , . ~ will be known for what's happened here. , ., ~ ,., we can speak now to david dunn, professor in international politics at the university of birmingham.

good to talk to you, professor. thanks forjoining us. i guess many could argue that america was pretty divided anyway before this happened. what kind of impact do you think it will have? i what kind of impact do you think it will have? ~ , what kind of impact do you think it will have? ~' , ., will have? i think it will be a definin: will have? i think it will be a defining issue _ will have? i think it will be a defining issue in _ will have? i think it will be a defining issue in this - will have? i think it will be a l defining issue in this election. will have? i think it will be a - defining issue in this election. how it has —— and how it is spun, how it is talked about will be crucial. actually, the impact will also be big. this will have a major impact on the sympathy vote, when ronald reagan was shot in 1981 his popularity went through the roof as a consequence. you can expect a huge surge in political donations. there will also be concern that actually, this creates copycat acts of violence, and it depends crucially how donald trump and the republicans actually interpret this, because if they say this was a lone individual who acted in this way in a criminal
10:12 am
manner, that's one thing. if they talk about them being trying to get me in all sorts of way, that could be divisive going forward. but there have been concerns and opinion polls showing an increasing willingness of american citizens prepared to use violence if they don't get what they want. and in a sense, this is a culmination of the trend since 2016 whereby you haven't had a candidate willing to abide by the result of the election. democracy works if you prioritise the process rather than the result. in a candidate like donald trump, we have someone who has disputed and challenged the process at every turn and in a sense this is an extreme manifestation of that thinking. this is an extreme manifestation of that thinking-— that thinking. does it matter which olitical that thinking. does it matter which political party _ that thinking. does it matter which political party of — that thinking. does it matter which political party of the _ that thinking. does it matter which political party of the shooting -- i political party of the shooting —— by the shooter is affiliated to? it by the shooter is affiliated to? it matters more that actually these

events are contextualise and to find as an individual*s actions rather than part of a wider movement. it is now time for both sides to seek calm and reconciliation, rather than actually this febrile mood and having a because america has the potential risk of wider violence, societal violence, given the way in which both sides actually present this case, the selection is about an existential threat to democracy in one way or another. —— this election. and in a sense, with america being highly armed, highly divided, highly politicised, lacking in trust, lacking in faith and its institutions, this is the sort of thing that can happen. tummy a little more _ thing that can happen. tummy a little more about _ thing that can happen. tummy a little more about what _ thing that can happen. tummy a little more about what this - thing that can happen. tummy a little more about what this tells | thing that can happen. tummy a i little more about what this tells us about the security situation in the us, because obviously, questions will be asked about the close

security, about his detail, about why this was allowed to happen. at, why this was allowed to happen. certain aspect of this. extraordinary that an individual was able to get a high position in fireman to the convention. there will be questions asked about the failures on the part of the fbi and his personal security team in allowing this to happen. but clearly, one thing didn't work, which was the training that trem had. —— but one thing that clearly did work which was the training that trump had when he hit the floor. with president kennedy, it was the first shot that killed him, it was the subsequent shots fired attended his life and that was the case here but the shooter didn't get a chance to actually fire more shots at trump because he had hit the ground. but the wider point in terms of the personal security of the candidates

is an issue. i imagine now they may also change the idea of having someone come members of the crowd standing behind him because we have heard tragically that one person was killed and two were seriously injured standing behind him, that's not a good idea when you have candidates who are potential assassination targets.- candidates who are potential assassination targets. let's bring it back and _ assassination targets. let's bring it back and talk _ assassination targets. let's bring it back and talk about _ assassination targets. let's bring it back and talk about the - assassination targets. let's bring it back and talk about the timing | assassination targets. let's bring l it back and talk about the timing of this in the period in which we are seeing ourselves in the us. have —— there has been a feeling of confusion about what president biden's plans, feeling of unrest within the democratic side of things and now this event here, how is this all going to play out in the coming days and weeks in terms of the campaigns and moving towards the presidential election? because that sense of confusion is just going to be worsened, is it not? it sense of confusion isjust going to be worsened, is it not?— be worsened, is it not? it is. extraordinary, _ be worsened, is it not? it is. l extraordinary, unprecedented be worsened, is it not? it 3 extraordinary, unprecedented summary well. the timing of this event is in some ways idealfor the republicans

next week because they have their moment in the sun, the convention will be an opportunity for them to lay out their policies and to announce their vice presidential pick. the convention usually gets a boost in the polls. we can see that this is an opportunity for them to actually lionised a candidate. the extraordinary images of trump with his fist in the air defying, being a vigorous individual in the face of adversity, will be on every mug and t—shirt on that convention and the will use the opportunity to raise lots of money and undoubtedly trump will get a boost in the polls as a consequence of that. at a time when the vigour and vitality of the democratic candidate, mr biden, is increasingly in question. it may slow the process of the attempt to try and change the democratic

candidate, he will not want to do anything in the immediate aftermath of these events to avoid any suggestion that these things are linked. but biden's future is precarious too, indeed those questions haven't gone away and we'll come back in the weeks ahead. the democrats have got a few weeks before their convention in chicago to change the candidate and that process is still ongoing. professor, it's been really _ process is still ongoing. professor, it's been really good _ process is still ongoing. professor, it's been really good to _ process is still ongoing. professor, it's been really good to get - process is still ongoing. professor, it's been really good to get your. it's been really good to get your analysis, thank you for your time. hours later, a video of donald trump walking down the steps of his plane in newjersey has been shared online. posted by his deputy communications director on social media — the video shows trump descending the staircase unaided, whilst an armed agent stands guard. his right ear, which was injured, cannot be seen in the footage. let's speak to dr karin von hippel.

she's director—general of the royal united services institute — rusi, a leading defence and security think tank here in the uk. to talk to you, thanks forjoining us. first of all, your assessment of what this means now, not only for the election campaign but for us politics? the election campaign but for us olitics? ~ . , , politics? well, in many ways, the olitical politics? well, in many ways, the political rhetoric _ politics? well, in many ways, the political rhetoric has _ politics? well, in many ways, the political rhetoric has been - politics? well, in many ways, the| political rhetoric has been divisive for some been divisive globally, and that division has led to violence, we have seen that in the uk with the unfortunate murder ofjo cox or sir david amess, 2016 and 2021. the difference in the united states of course is that pretty much everyone has a gun, there are more guns in america than people. so it makes the opportunity for this kind of violence more frequent and more possible. but it's not the first time either that political leaders in the united states have been attacked or killed. the democratic

representative was shot in 2011, there was a republican in 2017 who was also shot at. so it's not abnormal, unfortunately, in the united states. but the timing is really quite frightening. everyone is very grateful but trump has survived —— that trump has survived, including president biden. this survived -- that trump has survived, including president biden.— including president biden. as you sa , nuns including president biden. as you say. guns have — including president biden. as you say, guns have been _ including president biden. as you say, guns have been readily- say, guns have been readily available for many years but there haven't been assassination attempts every year. what is it about this period we are in now?— every year. what is it about this period we are in now? every day, that peeple _ period we are in now? every day, that peeple are — period we are in now? every day, that people are shot _ period we are in now? every day, that people are shot at... - period we are in now? every day, that people are shot at... i'm - that people are shot at... i'm talkin: that people are shot at... i'm talking about _ that people are shot at... i'm talking about in _ that people are shot at... i'm talking about in the political sphere. talking about in the political shere. * ., * ., ., ., sphere. but don't forget also we had in january 2021. _ sphere. but don't forget also we had in january 2021, the _ sphere. but don't forget also we had in january 2021, the attack _ sphere. but don't forget also we had in january 2021, the attack on - sphere. but don't forget also we had in january 2021, the attack on the i injanuary 2021, the attack on the capitol and people were killed there as well. itjust capitol and people were killed there as well. it just tells you capitol and people were killed there as well. itjust tells you that the divisiveness is getting so heated up and is being exacerbated by the

political rhetoric on both sides stop so everyone needs to dial it back and it's not entirely clear to me that this is going to happen in the immediate future. we've already seen some other candidates for vice president blaming it on biden's rhetoric. that doesn't help. do you think that will — rhetoric. that doesn't help. do you think that will continue, _ rhetoric. that doesn't help. do you think that will continue, the - think that will continue, the blaming of this on the democrats? leasing that already from some areas of the republican party. —— we've seen that. is it important that former president trump comes out with a statement that doesn't blame the democrats and it a bit more calming, if you like? it the democrats and it a bit more calming, if you like?— the democrats and it a bit more calming, if you like? it would be nice if he did _ calming, if you like? it would be nice if he did that. _ calming, if you like? it would be nice if he did that. it's _ calming, if you like? it would be nice if he did that. it's not - calming, if you like? it would be nice if he did that. it's not clear| nice if he did that. it's not clear whether he will. if you want to look presidential, the best thing he can do right now is to say, everybody calm down and let's debate the issues, but let's not take this a different level. but it's hard to say with him because of course, in

it was training, i'm sure they all get training. trump as we all know doesn't want to pay attention to what people want to tell him to do, but he has instincts, and his instincts are very good. his instincts are very good. his instincts on what to do a social media are very good. so he is actually in very good shape in that way. he's alert and astute. so i think he are for some period of time, i'm not in khayelitsha what will happen. i think the last guest was right, it's an interesting time, it is in a certain time, it's not clear whether president biden will stay in the race, so there is a lot of uncertainty between the two conventions, the republicans have won this week that, then the democrats in august. step away from the race, mr trump? i don't think that the pressure will ease off biden, much of this particular incident will impact that pressure, that pressure is there and it's only ramping up. so i think we will hear more about that in the coming week about what the democrats are going to do a mock president biden might do. but i don't think it will have anything to do with this. 0k, will have anything to do with this. ok, it's been really good to get you on the programme and thank you so much talking to us. donnell, —— donald trump has posted some comments on his social media. he said...

those, the comments from president trump. before we take a short break, let me direct you to the bbc*s bullet live page. if you are stepping away from the tv or you want to watch more videos, we have the full video of the gunman falling on the roof, please be aware the video does contain distressing content. it shows him calling on his stomach on the roof for he takes aim and fires in the former president. we also have witness statements on the live page including this one from a man who was saying to the bbc that police were pointing at him, and as always there's plenty more in our live page. i will be back in a few

minutes. stay with us on the bbc. hello, there. for many, there'll be some dry and bright weather around today, a little bit of sunshine, but quite a bit of cloud, too — particularly across parts of northern england and across scotland. in the borders earlier it was a little bit murky, and we've got some rain around here, but also there's some murkiness around some of the coasts of scotland further north, too. this low pressure's the reason that we've seen all the rain through the weekend — high pressure, though, is building into the west, which is why the north west highlands may well see the lion's share of the sunshine. it's still a cool breeze with us today, but not as strong as yesterday — however, still bringing in rather dank and drizzly weather to parts of southern scotland, into northern england.
10:26 am
one or two light showers potentially, northern ireland, further south and west across england and wales, but fewer than yesterday and they shouldn't be as heavy, either. and temperatures will get a little higher, as well, because we're getting a bit more sunshine. so just the slightest chance of a shower at wimbledon, and it should be dry — as you can see — in berlin, for the match this evening. and quite warm, as well — probably warmer than it will be here in the uk this evening. if you are planning to go and watch the match on a big screen around the uk, i think you will be quite cool into the evening hours. a lot of dry weather around, but just still some lingering drizzle perhaps across parts of the north of england in particular, and towards the north midlands — but, again, it should be light and patchy, as you can see, by that stage, it's a weakening feature all the time. the north wind starting to ease, the winds falling light, little bit of mist and fog again by morning, as we saw this morning, and already by morning more rain pushing into the south and west. so a little bit on the cool side first thing, but actually it looks like a reversal of fortunes for tomorrow. we'll see drier weather across the north and east of scotland, northern england.
10:27 am
we've got offshore winds instead, so it'll be warmer. instead, we get heavier rain, some thundery rain moving in across parts of southern england, wales, marching its way steadily southwards through the day. but, yes, quite a notable change where we're seeing just 12 to m across the north sea coast today. it should feel warmer and a little bit brighter tomorrow with some sunshine. that low pressure moves into the north sea again on tuesday, taking with it a lot of showers. then perhaps a brief ridge of high pressure around mid week — it doesn't last long, we've got more weather systems coming into the north and west, so that's primarily where we think we'll see the rain late in the week, and perhaps something a little bit to drier further south. there's more, as ever, on the website.

this is bbc news — the headlines... gunshots and screaming. an assassination attempt on donald trump as he speaks at an election rally in pennsylvania. mr trump says a bullet ripped through his ear. he survived without any serious injuries. here is the gunman filmed on a nearby roof. the 20—year—old was shot dead moments after this. we do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly. 0ur correspondent gary 0'donoghue was forced to take cover at the rally venue. we're just waiting to see if things

have cleared and we are just — as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which is not ideal, but that's the shelter we have at the moment. there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick, it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. president biden spoke soon after the shooting — saying he was grateful to hear that his opponent was safe. in a televised address, the president condemned the incident, describing it as "sick". he later confirmed that he had personally spoken to donald trump. there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick, it's sick. it's one of the reasons we have to unite this country. we cannot condone this. a trump rally is a rally he should be able to conduct peacefully without problems. but the idea — the idea that there is political violence or violence in america like this

is just unheard of, not appropriate.
