12:30 pm
as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which is not ideal, but that's the shelter we have at the moment. there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's one of the reasons we have to unite this country. we heard earlier some reaction from world leaders to the assassination attempt on donald trump. well, we have also had reaction from uk policians. the house of commons leader, lucy powell, spoke to the bbc*s laura kuenssberg on her sunday programme. well, these are appalling scenes. this is an horrific incident which we can condemn completely and fulsomely. thankfully, president trump was not injured more seriously.
12:31 pm
the consequences of that are unthinkable. but the thoughts of the whole british government, i'm sure the whole country of britain are with the american people and president trump's family and those affected today. politically—motivated violence is farfrom unknown here in the uk. jo cox, a member of parliament, was murdered in 2016. hersister, kim leadbeater is now an mp. she said democracies are not making progress in tackling the problem. she was speaking on sunday with laura kuenssberg. we are back again having that conversation about what democracy looks like, what our politics looks like. there is absolutely no place for violence in a decent, civilised democracy and society and those scenes are deeply shocking. i think it's also important to acknowledge i understand one person has lost their life, others have been injured. i'm very pleased that president trump is ok, but there have been other casualties.
12:32 pm
we've got to have that conversation about what a civilised democracy looks like. i've been having it sincejo was killed. i, sadly, feel that we are not making huge amounts of progress in this country and in other countries and we have to keep having that conversation. also on sunday with laura kuenssberg was the leader of the right—wing reform uk party, nigel farage. he is a friend and supporter of donald trump and gave us his reaction to the shooting. very upset. and i'm still upset. i'm obviously pleased that my friend donald's got away with it — onlyjust, but he's got away with it. but one person is dead, two more are fighting for their lives in hospital. so it's an absolutely horrendous incident and yet, somehow, i'm not shocked by it. the narrative that is put out there about trump by these liberals that oppose him is so nasty, is so unpleasant, that i think it almost encourages this type of behaviour.
12:33 pm
our political correspondent harry farley has the international reaction. sir keir starmer has messaged president trump's team. david lammy, the foreign secretary has also said that he is monitoring the situation, what he called the shocking developments in pennsylvania. rishi sunak, obviously former prime minister and now leader of the opposition here in the uk, saying this morning that he is horrified by

12:35 pm
candidates in the general election campaign we just had in the last few weeks in the uk. he describes an alarming pattern and says there is a dark underbelly of abuse and talks about a concerted campaign by extremists to create a hostile environment for mps. talk viewers throu~h environment for mps. talk viewers through that- _ environment for mps. talk viewers through that. we _ environment for mps. talk viewers through that. we saw— environment for mps. talk viewers through that. we saw a _ environment for mps. talk viewers through that. we saw a number. environment for mps. talk viewers through that. we saw a number of| through that. we saw a number of incidents through _ through that. we saw a number of incidents through the _ through that. we saw a number of incidents through the election - incidents through the election campaign ranging from candidates being filmed and abused as they went about campaigning. nigel farage had rocks thrown at him. it is obviously a very different context, not at the scale or level we have seen just now, but that abuse and intimidation, even attempts at violence we saw in the general election campaign. some more reaction from the speaker
12:36 pm
of the house of representatives mike johnson. he says that we have got to turn the rhetoric down, we have got to turn the temperature down in this country. that is from the house speaker, mikejohnson. i'm sure we will be getting a lot of reaction throughout the day and we will bring it to live on news. she's an associate fellow with the international security programme at chatham house. it is good to talk to you and i appreciate you taking the time to speak to us on a sunday. first of all, your reaction to this incident. my all, your reaction to this incident. my reaction of course is that it is shocking and deeply regrettable and i think it is time to revisit rhetoric, the relationship between rhetoric, the relationship between rhetoric and incitement and violence, as well as gun laws. there is a problem with the way political
12:37 pm
rhetoric has led to incitement. it is not clear at this particular case what the motives of the shooter where, but nevertheless this is a stark reminder for all of us to tune in to the relationship between what we say, what we carry with us, and what the consequences are. we heard from mikejohnson about turning the rhetoric down. we from mike johnson about turning the rhetoric down.— rhetoric down. we heard earlier on from our republican _ rhetoric down. we heard earlier on from our republican overseas - from our republican overseas representative about the trump derangement syndrome. is it fair to say that the rhetoric has been from both sides, notjust against former president trump. film both sides, notjust against former president trump.— both sides, notjust against former president trump. oh no. i think the rhetoric is escalate _ president trump. oh no. i think the rhetoric is escalate tory _ president trump. oh no. i think the rhetoric is escalate tory and - rhetoric is escalate tory and endangers not in the us only, but also in the uk and across the world, frankly. there has been a change in what is allowed legally. the
12:38 pm
definition... there is a fine balance between freedom of speech and incitement to violence and i think this is a call for that fine balance to be revisited and for the legislation, both in the us and in the uk and across the world to see whether it is sufficient. let’s the uk and across the world to see whether it is sufficient.— whether it is sufficient. let's talk a little bit more _ whether it is sufficient. let's talk a little bit more about _ whether it is sufficient. let's talk a little bit more about the - whether it is sufficient. let's talk. a little bit more about the security around former president trump. there will be questions about how this was all handled by his security team and what went wrong.— what went wrong. well, it is under investigation. _ what went wrong. well, it is under investigation. clearly, _ what went wrong. well, it is under investigation. clearly, something. investigation. clearly, something went wrong. it is the secret service thatis went wrong. it is the secret service that is in charge of the former president's security. they clearly messed up on this particular incident. it is under investigation by the fbi and i think we need to wait for the official investigation results. my understanding is that the secret service is carrying out
12:39 pm
its own investigation. so you have two parallel investigations and i'm sure they are trying to get to the bottom of it very quickly. hopefully, there will be answers soon. , . ., , hopefully, there will be answers soon. , . . , soon. this changes the way the selection loose _ soon. this changes the way the selection loose forward. - soon. this changes the way the selection loose forward. we - soon. this changes the way the | selection loose forward. we are already hearing of reports of security being increased. we have the republican national convention coming up very soon. this is going to change the course of the selection in terms of not only politically, but also how the safety and security of these people, these political names and faces is taken, how seriously it is taken.— how seriously it is taken. certainly there will be _ how seriously it is taken. certainly there will be a _ how seriously it is taken. certainly there will be a change _ how seriously it is taken. certainly there will be a change in _ how seriously it is taken. certainly there will be a change in security, | there will be a change in security, that's for sure. there will be enhanced security across the board. the republican convention is next monday. the democrat convention is taking place on the 19th of august there is the question of how
12:40 pm
security will be enhanced and i think we should leave that to the experts and i'm sure it will be enhanced across the board. then there is the question of how it will affect the presidential elections. president trump has excellent instincts. hejumped down and as soon as the shot hit his ear, that probably saved his life because my understanding is that there were eight shots fired. regretfully, and bullet did kill one of the other by standards and two others are in critical condition and we must not forget that. the other issue, of course, is that we don't really know, this image of him with a bloodied face with his fist next to his head. that is a very powerful image. it is certainly not going to
12:41 pm
hurt him in the race. we image. it is certainly not going to hurt him in the race.— hurt him in the race. we heard at the time apparently _ hurt him in the race. we heard at the time apparently in _ hurt him in the race. we heard at the time apparently in the - hurt him in the race. we heard at i the time apparently in the moments after the shooting he was covered up by security and as he emerged with his face streaked with blood, apparently he punched his fist in the air and apparently he punched his fist in the airand urged apparently he punched his fist in the air and urged the words fight, fight, fight. i guess that is the kind of rhetoric you were talking aboutjust kind of rhetoric you were talking about just a kind of rhetoric you were talking aboutjust a moment ago. he is kind of rhetoric you were talking aboutjust a moment ago. about 'ust a moment ago. he is known for aboutjust a moment ago. he is known for its gallantry — aboutjust a moment ago. he is known for its gallantry rhetoric _ aboutjust a moment ago. he is known for its gallantry rhetoric and _ aboutjust a moment ago. he is known for its gallantry rhetoric and even - for its gallantry rhetoric and even that image, that strong image with the fist and fight. is he fighting for his life, that is fine. what is he fighting for and the question really is how are we going to ensure that the race continues with more moderate rhetoric on both sides. despite the incident. i think the main lesson learnt really is that the rhetoric needs to be toned down on all sides. d0
12:42 pm
the rhetoric needs to be toned down on all sides-— on all sides. do you think that is likel to on all sides. do you think that is likely to happen? _ on all sides. do you think that is likely to happen? it _ on all sides. do you think that is likely to happen? it remains - on all sides. do you think that is likely to happen? it remains to l on all sides. do you think that is i likely to happen? it remains to be seen. a likely to happen? it remains to be seen- a tricky _ likely to happen? it remains to be seen. a tricky question _ likely to happen? it remains to be seen. a tricky question at - likely to happen? it remains to be seen. a tricky question at the - seen. a tricky question at the moment. i think the democrats will have to tone down their rhetoric. i think we can expect more consider a tory rhetoric. we already heard more conciliatory statements made. i'm not sure that the same is true for the presidential candidate of the republican party himself. héerr; republican party himself. very briefl , i republican party himself. very briefly, i guess, _ republican party himself. very briefly, i guess, because - republican party himself. very briefly, i guess, because there will be discussions on this, but gun control, gun violence in the united states, will questions be raised again because of this or will people just view this through an exclusively political prison? i think this is a key issue, gun control. i think this clearly would not have happened had gunz not been freely handed to anyone who wants them. it is very clearly a problem,
12:43 pm
a very divisive issue in the united states, but i think it will be back on the table big time after this event. it on the table big time after this event. . , , ., , on the table big time after this event. ., , ., , ., event. it has been really good to seak event. it has been really good to s - eak to event. it has been really good to speak to yom — event. it has been really good to speak to yom i _ event. it has been really good to speak to you. i really _ event. it has been really good to speak to you. i really appreciate | speak to you. i really appreciate your time. thank you very much indeed. we have had more comments from former president trump on his truth social website. former president trump on his truth socialwebsite. he former president trump on his truth social website. he said thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday as it was god alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. we will fair or not but instead remain resilient and our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness. 0ur faith and defiant in the face of wickedness. our love goes out to other victims and their families. we pray for the recovery of those who were wounded and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed. in this moment it is more important than ever that we stand united and show our true
12:44 pm
character as americans, remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win. i truly love our country and —— and love you all and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from wisconsin.
12:45 pm
just to make a point perhaps in the rhetoric and that statements, i suppose it could be described as quite calm, he is calling for unity, talking about being strong and determined. there was no end that statements of the words that he stared allegedly when he was being led away, fight, fight, fight! he is asking people to remain united. to remain strong and determined. talking about not allowing evil to win and love of his country. he pays tribute to the one person that we know was killed in that assassination attempt and also asks for his supporters to pray for the recovery. we know that two people
12:46 pm
were seriously injured in that attack. so, insight into what president trump is thinking in the aftermath of that assassination attempt. i suppose you could say this is quite calm and dialled down response from the former president. we will bring you reaction to that as soon as we get it. for now, let's talk about the event itself. 0r correspond on gary 0'donoghue talk to an eyewitness at the event. tim told our correspondent gary 0'donoghue that a man with a rifle was seen on a rooftop minutes before shots were fired.
12:47 pm
we noticed a guy crawling army... you know, bear crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50ft away from us. so we're standing there, you know, we're pointing. we're pointing at the guy crawling up the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a rifle. a rifle. we could clearly see him with a rifle, absolutely. we're pointing at him. the police are down there running around on the ground. we're like, "hey, man, there's a guy on the roof with a rifle". and the police are like, "huh? what?" you know, like they didn't know what was going on. we're like, "hey, right here on the roof. we can see him from right here. we see him, he's crawling". and next thing you know, i'm thinking to myself, why is trump still speaking? why have they not pulled him off the stage? i'm standing there pointing at him for two or three minutes. secret service is looking at us from the top of the barn. i'm pointing at that roof, just standing there like this. next thing you know, five shots ring out. so you're certain that the shots came from that guy on the roof?
12:48 pm
100%. and he was up there for a couple of minutes. he was up there... you saw him up there for a couple of minutes? absolutely. at least three to four minutes. and you were telling the police in the secret service? we were telling the police, we were pointing at him for the secret service, who were looking at us from the top of the barn. they were looking at us the whole time we were standing by that tree. could they see? binoculars... could they see him? probably not, because the roof, the way the slope went, he was behind where they could see. but why is there not secret service on all of these roofs here? i mean, this is not a big place. tom newton dunne, a journalist who was at the rally, witnessed the moment trump was shot at. trump rallies are unlike any other political experiences i have covered in 20 years of politicaljournalism. it was a carnival. his supporters
12:49 pm
adore him, come from hundreds of miles. supporters from idaho, 0hio, all over pennsylvania. it was a blisteringly hot, lovely sunny afternoon here in western pennsylvania. they were in carnival mood. their tails were up because they thought there guy was going to win because ofjoe biden because my troubles. he was an hour late. he was met with huge cheers, he had just begun his routine, quite a familiar one. he wasjust just begun his routine, quite a familiar one. he was just getting into the meat on illegal immigration. no more than five minutes into his speech when the shots rang out. how philosophy can fire doesn't sound like a it sounds like on the movies, it was like cracks, whip lashes. a lot of us didn't know what it happen. whether it was firecrackers, stunts, or a
12:50 pm
bad humourjoke. it was only when someone in the crowd shouted out all of us get down, that is when the penny dropped. gunfire, bullets rakingjust penny dropped. gunfire, bullets raking just above the heads of thousands of people, very narrowly missing donald trump and tragically hitting someone behind him. that must have been _ hitting someone behind him. that must have been quite frightening for you to be there at that moment and to be part of that confusion. it looks like there was a lot of confusion at that time. it looks like there was a lot of confusion at that time. it took a few seconds _ confusion at that time. it took a few seconds to _ confusion at that time. it took a few seconds to sink _ confusion at that time. it took a few seconds to sink in. - confusion at that time. it took a few seconds to sink in. there i confusion at that time. it took a i few seconds to sink in. there was confusion at that time. it took a - few seconds to sink in. there was an eerie silence when everybody was trying to compute what was happening. when we didn't realise that several people have been seriously hurt, people reacted in very different ways. of course it was a terrifying experience. some people burst into tears, some people cried out, one woman next to me was
12:51 pm
repeating over and over again, jesus, they got him. the secret service were shouting at everybody to get out as fast as possible. 0thers reacted in anger. some men very angry indeed, blaming democrats, biden, cnn, and they were raging, threatening revenge, and they were angry at the secret service, saying how on earth had they allowed this to happen, how had he got up on high ground and opened fire on an open stage with the president was. it took some time for the shock to sink in for all of us, for us to really realise the monstrosity of what i just for us to really realise the monstrosity of what ijust happened and the tragic that lethal political violence has once again returned to america. he violence has once again returned to america. . ~ .,

12:53 pm
had just done. it was clearly unfounded stuff, disturbing stuff, but that was the mood of some trump supporters. not all of them. some werejust very sad, supporters. not all of them. some were just very sad, not ready to blame anybody, and were heartbroken at what had been for them at carnival event, for it to turn it to such appalling tragedy. i want to bring you these live pictures if we can. these are of bethel park. it is the location of the home of the shooter. you can see there there is a big police presence. we are being told that the shooteris being rated, searched by police for evidence and the fbi investigation. his name is thomas
12:54 pm
matthew crooks. he is 20 years old, he was a registered republican according to state voter records, but according to reuters when he was 17 he made a 15 dollar donation to a left—wing pack. he graduated in 2002 from bethel park high school. he received a $500 star award for the national maths and science initiative, according to the paper. we are getting a bit of comments from his family. apparently his father told cnn that he is trying to figure out what happened and he would wait if speak to law enforcement before speaking. we are unclear as to the motive. police are currently outside his home. they are searching his home as part of their investigation into the events last
12:55 pm
night. the assassination attempt on donald trump is of course our top story and we are giving it full and comprehensive coverage, so don't go anywhere, stay with us. hello, there. for many, there'll be some dry and bright weather around today, a little bit of sunshine, but quite a bit of cloud, too — particularly across parts of northern england and across scotland. in the borders earlier it was a little bit murky, and we've got some rain around here, but also there's some murkiness around some of the coasts of scotland further north, too. this low pressure's the reason that we've seen all the rain through the weekend — high pressure, though, is building into the west, which is why the north west highlands may well see the lion's share of the sunshine. it's still a cool breeze with us today, but not as strong as yesterday — however, still bringing in rather dank and drizzly weather to parts of southern scotland, into northern england. one or two light showers potentially, northern ireland, further south and west across england and wales, but fewer than yesterday and they shouldn't be as heavy, either. and temperatures will get
12:56 pm
a little higher, as well, because we're getting a bit more sunshine. so just the slightest chance of a shower at wimbledon, and it should be dry — as you can see — in berlin, for the match this evening. and quite warm, as well — probably warmer than it will be here in the uk this evening. if you are planning to go and watch the match on a big screen around the uk, i think you will be quite cool into the evening hours. a lot of dry weather around, but just still some lingering drizzle perhaps across parts of the north of england in particular, and towards the north midlands — but, again, it should be light and patchy, as you can see, by that stage, it's a weakening feature all the time. the north wind starting to ease, the winds falling light, little bit of mist and fog again by morning, as we saw this morning, and already by morning more rain pushing into the south and west. so a little bit on the cool side first thing, but actually it looks like a reversal of fortunes for tomorrow. we'll see drier weather across the north and east of scotland, northern england. we've got offshore winds instead, so it'll be warmer. instead, we get heavier rain, some thundery rain moving
12:57 pm
in across parts of southern england, wales, marching its way steadily southwards through the day. but, yes, quite a notable change where we're seeing just 12 to 1a across the north sea coast today. it should feel warmer and a little bit brighter tomorrow with some sunshine. that low pressure moves into the north sea again on tuesday, taking with it a lot of showers. then perhaps a brief ridge of high pressure around mid week — it doesn't last long, we've got more weather systems coming into the north and west, so that's primarily where we think we'll see the rain late in the week, and perhaps something a little bit to drier further south. there's more, as ever, on the website.

live from london, this is bbc news. if you look at what happened... gun shots get down! screams an assassination attempt on donald trump as he speaks at an outdoor election rally in pennsylvania. the former us president says a bullet ripped through his ear — but he survived without serious injuries — and has now left hospital. this is the gunman filmed on a nearby roof — the 20—year—old was shot dead, moments later. we do not currently have an identified motive although our investigators are working tirelessly. the bbc*s gary 0'donoghue was covering the rally — he and his team were forced to take cover as shots rang out. we're just waiting to see
