donald trump was shot. the fbi says the gunman — who was on a nearby roof — killed a spectator and wounded two others before being shot dead by snipers. and as you can see, security agents rushed to protect the former us president and hurried him off stage with blood on his face. in a social media post, mr trump said a bullet had pierced his ear. he is now in newjersey where he plans to spend the night at his private golf club. this image obtained by the entertainment news outlet tmz — shows the exact moment the shooter — who is lying on his stomach — lines up his shot from the roof. clearly questions about how we was able to do that without being stopped. the gunman was shot dead moments after this. and what you just heard there — was some of the reaction from the distressd crowd —

donald trump was seen getting to his feet and raising a fist to his supporters, signs of blood at his right ear. cheering. we are just waiting to see if things have cleared, and as you can see, we are on the ground behind our car, which isn't ideal, but that is the shelter we have at the moment, and that is what we are trying to ascertain, what has happened? as people streamed out of the venue, they told us what they had seen. one man, a local business owner, described how he had noticed a man he believed to be the shooter climbing onto a low roof nearby holding a weapon. we noticed a guy crawling, bear crawling, up the roof of the building beside us.

50 feet away from us. so, we are seeing him there, and we are pointing, pointing at the guy pointing at the lap up the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a rifle. a rifle? we could clearly see him with a rifle. absolutely. we're pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground, we are like: "hey, man, there is a guy on the roof with a rifle." and the police are like: "oh, what?" you know, like, they didn't know what was going on. shouting. what are you doing? i heard the shots. i thought it was firecrackers, to begin with. somebody over there was screaming: "he has been shot, he has been shot." so, i made my way over. i said: "i am an emergency department physician, can we help you?" the guy had spun around

though, donald trump has indicated he plans to go to the republican national convention on monday as planned. in the meantime, investigations will continue. everyone is asking: how could an attempted political assassination be part of modern day america? gary o'donoghue, bbc news in butler pennsylvania. maloney trump. she says when i saw that bullet hit my husband... i'm grateful to the law enforcement officials who risked their lives to protect my husband. to the families

the democrats will convene. regardless of which way you look at the situation is. it is a tough moment for all americans. what do you do? do you stay home or do you show up to for somebody. i'm not really sure how to talk pass this to my fellow americans. because we have never been here before as a nation. let me just never been here before as a nation. let mejust add, as never been here before as a nation. let me just add, as someone who has worked squarely in pod politics for just two decades now i could not have scripted it better, in the aftermath of trump being shot at, he emerged with his fist pumped in the air, looking angry and victorious, looking like they took me dad tried to take me down they didn't. that is trump projecting strength, strength, strength. that is really tough for the democrats to counter. yes we

great problems. and they require innovative new solutions that are rooted in some degree of experience with new ideas and experience of technology. neither trump or biden can exhibit that. younger americans are taking notice. this shooter is a 20—year—old shooter. there is no doubt that he was radicalised it doesn't matter if he was registered as a republican. the reality is that young people are growing extremely frustrated with what our system is offering them. and there is time for real change. this this weekend milwaukee is more consequential than ever before. . .. milwaukee is more consequential than ever before. . ,, , ., milwaukee is more consequential than ever before. ., ,, , ., ., milwaukee is more consequential than ever before. ., ,, ., ., ever before. thank you for 'oining us. we ever before. thank you for 'oining we wru— ever before. thank you for 'oining we win pwyfi ever before. thank you for 'oining us. we will play you * ever before. thank you for 'oining us. we will play you the h ever before. thank you forjoining us. we will play you the latest - us. we will play you the latest interviews and all of those questions being asked of the secret service in a minute or two. it's a

4:24 pm
and you saw some of them there gathered around the president, some of them in military clothing as well. there are two strands to this investigation. the first is one, essentially, it's detective work of ticking off the boxes. who is the who was the shooter? well, he's already been identified, okay? he's been named. identified? they've been to his house. but you've got to do a lot of follow up to that. you've got to seize all his tech. they've got to look at his digital footprint. who is he in touch with? what websites was he looking at? was he a member of any organisation. was it an overseas organisation? if so, where did he purchase the weapon? was it licensed all of that stuff? then you've got the really awkward questions as to how did this lapse take place? who dropped the ball here? how did this guy bear crawl with what looks like an ar 15 assault rifle to within 130m of the former president and likely presidential hopeful? and you heard that witness, that one witness in gary's report.
4:25 pm
there were warnings passed on to police. so all of those questions about why that wasn't then escalated front and centre. and there are so many questions swirling around already. the secret service have had to deny that a request for further enhanced security around donald trump was pushed back. yeah. the fbi have also denied that because these things have a very if they're untrue, they have a they can catch on like wildfire and let's you know, let's not kid ourselves. this is going to be quite politicised. we are four months away from debatably one of the most important presidential elections in recent us history. america is sharply divided. this is going to play into it one way or another. so there is the risk that this event could be politicised. there will be some people who will have all sorts of conspiracy theories, which is why it's really important that the investigation comes up with the answers to those questions. who was this guy? what was his motive? did he have anybody helping him?
4:26 pm
what spurred him to do this and why wasn't it stopped? frank gardner talking to me a short while ago. hello there! so far thisjuly, there are quite a few places that have already seen well over the july average rainfall, and those places are particularly found across southern and eastern england and the north east of aberdeenshire. leading the rainfall. league of misery is loftus, where we've already had well over double the july average rainfall, even though the facts 0n on sunday we did happen to see

confidence was pretty low. we thought that possibly quarterfinals if we were really lucky, possibly the semis. they have blown us away and surpass one of our expectations in terms of not only the result but the way that they have played, they have earned themselves the title since the first match. we would be very pleased to win. i'd it is so interesting the way you described the start of the tournament. england always do it the opposite, building up the excitement, then getting going, and then we see and get disappointed by those early games in the group stages and the first knockout stage. but, it is just about piecing itself together again for england. at the back of their minds, spanish supporters, add a slightly at the back of their minds, spanish supporters, are they slightly nervous that england appear to be coming good at the right time? i think that there is a certain level of respect.

the world cup in 2010. the interesting thing about the spanish team is that the spaniards were quite doubtful about it going into this tournament, they went behind it unnecessarily. there is a big representation from the basque country which, given the regional tensions in this country, a lot of other spaniards were a little bit less willing to get behind given all of these regional divisions. but as spain has progressed and played some glorious football through this tournament, it has united spaniards behind this country. we are sporadically getting people coming in spanish shirts through here and in spanish shirts through here and in the main class. we have balloons going up outside restaurants, giant screens going up, i can tell you spain will be buying their national team tonight and rooting for a fourth straight euros championship title. i fourth straight euros championship title. , ., ., ., title. i will let you get out of the sun. emer mccarthy is in the spanish holiday town of benidorm for us, a favourite
