it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. carlos alcaraz wins the wimbledon men's singles title for a second year running, beating novak djokovic — denying him a record eighth win. and there's just three hours to go before england face spain in the euro final in berlin, and england fans believe. england will win tonight. and i have never_ england will win tonight. and i have never been — england will win tonight. and i have never been more sure of anything in my life _ never been more sure of anything in m life. ., . ., ., never been more sure of anything in m life. ., .., ., * * never been more sure of anything in m life. ., _, ., * * , my life. hello, welcome to bbc news. we start in the — my life. hello, welcome to bbc news. we start in the us. _ donald trump has survived an assassination attempt — at a rally in pennsylvania. he's now left hospital. he's posted

another statement on social media. mr trump said: "we will fear not, but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness. our love goes out to the other victims and their families." let's show you the moment donald trump was shot. the fbi says the gunman — who was on a nearby roof — killed a spectator and wounded two others before being shot dead by snipers. and as you can see, security agents rushed to protect the former us president, who ducked down. and hurried him off stage with blood on his face. in a social media post, mr trump said a bullet had pierced his ear. he's now in newjersey, where he plans to spend the night at his private golf club. this image obtained

by the entertainment news outlet tmz shows the exact moment the shooter — who is lying on his stomach — lines up his shot from the roof. clearly questions about how we was able to do that without being stopped. the gunman was shot dead moments after that. shouting and that was some of the reaction from the distressd crowd. the fbi has identified 20—year—old thomas matthew crooks as the suspect in the attempted assassination. these pictures are from his graduatiom ceremony. it's also being reported that bomb making materials were found in his vehicle and home. our senior north america correspondent, gary o'donoghue, was outside the venue where donald trump's rally took place. this is his report. and you know, that's a little bit old, that chart*s a couple of months old...
5:03 pm
it was just a few minutes into donald trump's speech when a volley of shots rang out. gunshots get down, get down, get down! gunshots the former president can be seen clutching at the right side of his head. after that, he hits the ground — as the secret service pile on top of him. theirjob, to put their bodies between him and the shooter. there was panic among the thousands of people inside the rally. many ran, many threw themselves to the ground. donald trump was seen getting to his feet and raising a fist to his supporters, signs of blood at his right ear. cheering we're just waiting to see if things have cleared, and as you can see, we're on the ground behind our car, which isn't ideal, but that's the shelter
5:04 pm
we have at the moment, and that's what we are trying to ascertain — what's happened. as people streamed out of the venue, they told us what they had seen. one man, a local business owner, described how he had noticed a man he believed to be the shooter climbing onto a low roof nearby holding a weapon. we noticed a guy crawling, bear crawling, up the roof of the building beside us. 50 feet away from us. so, we're seeing him there, and we're pointing, pointing at the guy pointing at the lap up the roof. and he had a gun, right? he had a rifle. a rifle? we could clearly see him with a rifle. absolutely. shouting we're pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground, we are like: "hey, man, there's a guy on the roof with a rifle." and the police are like: "oh, what?" you know, like, they didn't
5:05 pm
know what was going on. shouting what are you doing? i heard the shots. i thought it was firecrackers to begin with. somebody over there was screaming: "he's been shot, he's been shot." so i made my way over. i said: "i'm an emergency department physician, can we help you?" the guy had spun around and wasjammed between the benches. there's a helicopter coming in to get him. so, people there were really helpful... was only one person shot, that you saw? i did cpr, chest compression is as well a brief one. president trump was taken straight off to the local butler county hospital. shortly afterwards, he released a statement paying tribute to law enforcement, and expressing condolences for those killed and injured.
5:06 pm
the statement said: condemnations were swift. president biden had this to say. the idea that there's political violence or violence in america like this is just unheard—of — it's just not appropriate. and everybody must condemn it. everybody. the biden campaign is suspending its activities for the time being. though, donald trump has indicated he plans to go to the republican national convention on monday as planned. in the meantime, investigations will continue. everyone asking: how could an attempted political assassination be part of modern day america? gary o'donoghue, bbc news in butler, pennsylvania. our north america correspondent, nada tawfik, joins us live from milwaukee — where the republican national convention,
5:07 pm
starts on monday. let me pick up at some of those latest details.— latest details. yes, that's right. our us partner, _ latest details. yes, that's right. our us partner, cbs, _ latest details. yes, that's right. our us partner, cbs, have - our us partner, cbs, have confirmation from law enforcement that suspicious devices were confirmation from law enforcement that suspicious devices were found in his vehicle. and in fact, a device that could have initiated there is suspicious devices. a device that is commercially available. it was on his person. bomb squads have gone to his vehicle, which was parked by the rally. have also gone to his family home. and of course, that will now be part of the investigation. the fbi is trying to piece together how this all was developed. was this a plan that he developed over a couple of days? the day before the rally? they are also going to be combing through all of the surveillance
5:08 pm
footage, what has become surveillance footage, from leeds thousands of people pass microphones there at the rally, taking video, to try to assess whether he was a lone wolf or if anybody accompanied him to the rally. we know that no enforcement already swarmed his home, already has been saying they will be speaking to his family members and others. they had evacuated homes, matthew, nearthe rally. we know that law enforcement already swarmed his home, already has been saying they will be speaking to his family members and others. they had evacuated homes, matthew, nearly suspect*s family home in out of precaution, out of worrying perhaps of any explosive devices in his home. those details just coming out. figs devices in his home. those details just coming out-— just coming out. as you are finishing — just coming out. as you are finishing that _ just coming out. as you are finishing that answer, - just coming out. as you are finishing that answer, it - just coming out. as you are finishing that answer, it is i just coming out. as you are - finishing that answer, it is being reported that the white house are putting out a line, the fbi, the secret service chiefs are currently briefing joe biden on the shooting, as you would expect. that is currently happening. the lanyard trap put out a statement a short while ago. take us through that. yes, this was a long statement, and
5:09 pm
a rare statement from melania trump, who does not come out to react publicly. but of course, in that statement she very much reflects her personal feelings of how her life could have been incredibly altered if that bullet actually struck donald trump. it grazed him, but we sawjust how donald trump. it grazed him, but we saw just how close donald trump. it grazed him, but we sawjust how close it came to him in that photo. she says in the statement that the suspect was a monster who viewed her husband as an inhuman political machine, and she had an appeal to the nation, asking people come up with a call to unity, to ascend above the eight, the vitriol and the simple—minded ideas that ignite violence. so, melania trump adding her voice to the chorus of many on both sides of the aisle calling for unity at this moment and an end to political violence and a more respectful political discourse.
5:10 pm
briefly, you are there at the convention. is there any indication what is likely to happen in the coming hours as regards that? yes. coming hours as regards that? yes, matthew. coming hours as regards that? yes, matthew- you _ coming hours as regards that? yes, matthew. you can _ coming hours as regards that? yes, matthew. you can see _ coming hours as regards that? use: matthew. you can see the stage coming hours as regards that? isis matthew. you can see the stage is set behind me were donald trump will officially be crowned the nominee. certainly, the news and the video, you can see it playing continuously at any location you go to around here, people clearly have security at the top of their minds. a lot of the additional security that may be put in place as they assess the situation here, a lot of that is perhaps security we will not see but something they will be stepping up. but keep in mind the entire dynamic of this race has now changed profoundly after this historic incident. and so that will be no doubt reflected not only in donald trump's speech but every speaker who

comes here and speaks from the stage. comes here and speaks from the staue. . . comes here and speaks from the staie, ., ., ., ' ~' comes here and speaks from the staue. . . . , ~ . ~ comes here and speaks from the staue. . . . ' ~ . comes here and speaks from the staue. ., ., ., ' ~' ., , , stage. nada tawfik, thank you very much for the _ stage. nada tawfik, thank you very much for the latest. _ we're getting more details now about who thomas crooks was. let me take you through the latest we have learned. he was 20 and from bethel park in pennsylvania, about 70km, that's 43 miles from butler, the site of the attempted assassination. the fbi says at the time of the shooting crooks had not been carrying id, so investigators used dna to identify him. the school district has confirmed in a statement he graduated in 2022 from bethel park high school. us media is reporting that state voter records show that crooks was a registered republican. he is also reported to have donated 15 dollars to liberal campaign group actblue in 2021. it's used as an online fundraising platform for democratic candidates. the associated press news agency reports that law enforcement officials believe the weapon used
5:12 pm
to shoot at donald trump was purchased by crook's father — we think around six months ago. cbs reporter ross dee mattay is in butler with the lastest on the investigation. behind me is the butler farm showgrounds, the site of former president trump's rally yesterday and now the assassination attempt on his life. and it's been a busy morning. we've seen a huge state police presence. those state troopers are the ones that have maintained the perimeter around the farm showgrounds — essentially not letting anyone in or out of the grounds while the fbi now leads the investigation into this attempted assassination on the former president's life. so, er, essentially, members of the media are now lining the perimeter trying to see whatever we can beyond this fence, but we're still a few hundred yards away from where the actual rally was held. and i'm sure you can see the massive american flags suspended in the air behind me between two cranes. that is the typical backdrop for the former president's rallies, and he tends to speak on a stage
5:13 pm
right below that. so that is the actual site of the rally itself. and now the attempted assassination on former president trump's life. and i actuallyjust got done speaking with a resident of butler, someone who actually attended yesterday's rally, and he was kind of telling me about what butler's like. it's very rural out here. we've seen a lot of cornfields, so we would consider this farm country in western pennsylvania. it's just about a0 minutes north of pittsburgh, which is obviously a major city here in pennsylvania. but this is trump country. if you check the voting records, and as this gentleman so aptly pointed out to us, he won this area very handily in both 2016 and 2020. so this is a trump stronghold, which makes yesterday's assassination attempt that much more shocking. as you were saying at the start of that answer, the fbi, that is a crime scene now. they've already started their investigations. i suppose one of the critical things is to try to work out the exact sequence of events.
5:14 pm
in terms of those conversations you've been having, what have people been saying to you? well, that is the big question here in butler, is how? how was this shooter able to get so close to the former president, skirt around security? by all accounts, everyone who went into the rally actually went through metal detectors. it appears that the shooter was on the outside of the secured perimeter. that being said, though, it is the job of the secret service to make sure there are no threats within any sort of shooting range. and obviously there was some sort of mistake, some sort of mishap made by the former president's private security team in clearing this area, or else this shooter would not have been able to fire off between six and eight shots. that's what our senior senior law enforcement officials are telling us about the shooting itself. so the big question is how? how was the shooter able to pull this off?
5:15 pm
and that is what is centred. that's what this investigation by the fbi is centred around. hopefully we'll have answers to that in the coming days. coming days. but are we expecting updates from certainly the local law enforcement officers there as well in the in the coming minutes and hours? matthew, we haven't heard anything in terms of a press gathering or new information being released by the fbi or the secret service. i had a short conversation with a state trooper wondering that exact question. am i in the right place as a member of the media to get the newest information? and he didn't really have a good answer for me. keep in mind, this was a few hours ago, but i think this kind of speaks to the chaos now in the hours surrounding the fallout from this attempted assassination on the former president's life, we haven't heard any update in terms of when we'll be receiving new information. but of course, as soon as we do, we'll pass that along to you. that was our cbs colleague talking to us from the scene a short time ago. rina shah is a republican strategist — she says she's never seen the us more fractured. my first reaction was tears
5:16 pm
in my eyes, actually. and i realised that a lot of people who aren't in politics think that those of us who work in politics don't have a heart. but look, when you're seeing that kind of imagery, the most immediate former president of the united states be shot at, and the shrill shrieking from the crowd, the popping sounds that continued even after donald trump hit the ground and was protected by secret service agents on top, it was the kind of scene that i could have imagined some years ago but had put out of my mind. you know, look, i've been part of a group of operatives for the past eight years that has been warning about the rhetoric leading to actual physical violence. and unfortunately, that was not a fantasy, but it was reality yesterday — and i think i still remain very shook. i'm upset. i don't know how the country moves forward. and i think that uncertainty is breeding a great deal of anxiety in people on both sides
5:17 pm
of the aisle. the house speaker talked about dialling down the rhetoric. exactly the point that you are making. you would accept, though, that the rhetoric comes from both sides, because we were talking only about an hour or so ago to richard goodstein, a former adviser to the clintons. and he went through the various posts, the various images from the former president — making the point that this has become central to what we've been seeing in us politics. and in his view, largely driven by the former president. we're not even a full 2a hours after everything that happened in butler, pennsylvania, at that rally. but i can very safely say that the former president trump definitely kicked open the door to political violence, and it increased under his tenure in the white house. and so, even though he was kicked out of the white house in 2020, he's really never left the podium. he still behaves in a very
5:18 pm
presidential manner — presidential meaning not in terms of decorum, but in terms of really acting like he's still in power, acting like he's the most fit, the better leader than joe biden. and look... and that's what's on the ballot this november. as of right now, these conventions hold incredible possibilities, though. the republicans will meet next week in milwaukee and in chicago. next month, the democrats will convene. regardless of which way you look at the situation, it is a tough, tough moment for all americans. what do you do? do you stay home, or do you show up to vote against somebody or for somebody? the moment feels very fractured, and i'm not really sure how to talk past this to my fellow americans, because we've never been here before. as a nation, operatives like me have never had to function under these circumstances. and let mejust add this bit here. as somebody who's worked squarely in politics for nearly two decades now, i couldn't have scripted it better in the aftermath of trump being shot
5:19 pm
at on the rally stage. he emerged with his fist pumped in the air, looking angry, looking victorious, looking like "they didn't take me down, "they tried". that's the exact kind of thing that the democrats should fear. is trump projecting strength, strength, strength all the way towards november? that is really tough for the democrats to counter. yes, we were hearing from one of our correspondents talking about the likelihood, the high likelihood that all of this ends up getting politicised in the months ahead. it was interesting, though, what you were saying there, because as we look ahead to november, certainly from your answer, you still are struggling to work out the ramifications, the implications of what this means for the next few months? look, biden and trump are both within three years of each other. they're both very old men. and i don't mean to sound ageist here, but the average retirement age from coast to coast is anywhere between age 61 and 67. we're talking about octogenarians
5:20 pm
here who really should have passed the baton. both of them. you know, there have been severe calls for biden to drop out and since his debate performance against trump. but, you know, trump should also be called on to drop out. both of these men really need to look at the next generation of leadership. our nation faces so many... really challenges. the problems that we face are really great, and they require innovative new solutions that are rooted in some degree of... how else can i put it? than experience with new ideas, new technologies? neither biden or trump can exhibit that. and i think that's really problematic. and younger americans are taking notice. i mean, this shooter is a 20—year—old shooter. there's no doubt he was radicalised. it doesn't matter whether he was a registered republican or prior to registering as a republican.
5:21 pm
he gave a small dollar donation tojoe biden. the reality is that young people are growing extremely frustrated with what our system is offering them, and there is time for a real change. so, this week in milwaukee, trump's vp pick is more consequential than ever before. that was the republican strategist speaking to me earlier. richard goodstein is the former advisor to bill and hilary clinton — he says it is trump's own rhetoric which has contributed to the violent and devisive political landscape in the us donald trump is the luckiest man alive stop and what a horrible thing that would have been for the country. when i hear trump supporters talking about how violence is not acceptable in the political process, i'm reminded of donald trump first running for president, talking about second amendment solutions in case things did not go his way. donald trump
5:22 pm
recently said that mark milley, his former head of thejoint chiefs of staff, should be executed. donald trump posted, as you saw online, images of a bound and gagged joe biden in the back of a pick—up truck. and he marked nancy pelosi's husband, who was clubbed almost to death. so, this notion that somehow trump's hands are clean is, i have two confess, a bit much. it is trump's rhetoric that is leading this and, honestly, the fact that the shooter was a registered republican is something that i'm sure democrats, i hate to say, were greatly relieved at. because any

suggestion... i greatly relieved at. because any suggestion- - -— greatly relieved at. because any suggestion... i hear what you are sa in: , suggestion... i hear what you are saying. but _ suggestion... i hear what you are saying. but you — suggestion... i hear what you are saying, but you will _ suggestion... i hear what you are saying, but you will be _ suggestion... i hear what you are saying, but you will be well - suggestion... i hear what you are | saying, but you will be well aware that the counter narrative we have heard in the hours since this assassination attempt in terms of the rhetoric used by some democrats. i have heard what you just said, but broadly, given we know how polarised america is, is this a wake—up moment right across the board? 50. america is, is this a wake-up moment right across the board?— right across the board? so, the democrats _ right across the board? so, the democrat's rhetoric _ right across the board? so, the democrat's rhetoric is - right across the board? so, the democrat's rhetoric is about. right across the board? so, the l democrat's rhetoric is about how trump could be the end of democracy as we know it. i think that is actually indisputable. because of everything trump has said. nobody on the democratic side was calling for the democratic side was calling for the kind of violence that trump and his acolytes routinely call for. and they thought was a laughing matter. do i think this is going to cool things in the united states? i would like to say i do. but i kinda feel
5:24 pm
like to say i do. but i kinda feel like we have seen this before. after january six, trump was urging on these people, was indifferent to the chance of hanging mike pence, we thought maybe things would cool in the united states. and within a matter of days, all these people in congress who had called trump out, were at his beck and call at mar—a—lago, trying to curry favour with him. so i'm not sure that we have a basis at this moment to believe that things are going to cool and that unity will be the order of the day. and i want to offer my prayers and the prayers — and i want to offer my prayers and the prayers is 30 million pennsylvanians for the two individuals who are being treated at this time _ individuals who are being treated at this time. we lost a fellow pennsylvania last night. cory. i

there, all the subs knew that if you come on, you could be the player that makes the difference, and ollie watkins said, he knew that cole palmer would possible to him and he would score, he was brimming with confidence, and he went out with that confidence and delivered. ihe that confidence and delivered. he said he manifested it. a final quick thought about plaintiff or penalties if we get that moment. it is fascinating what's gareth southgate has done on that, because of his has been clear with his players, their practice and planned, and you can see a different mindset around that as well, can't you? i probably. you can, so as well, can't you? i probably. you can. so what _ as well, can't you? i probably. you can. so what we — as well, can't you? i probably. you can, so what we see _ as well, can't you? i probably. i'm, can, so what we see with gareth southgate's england teams, their very different to previous england teams, where the language has been about luck, about luxury which then takes away your control, where is he talks about penalties as a skill, and skinny is something within your control and can be worked on. we

up, so the scene very much a set there in berlin i had of the finals. would it be england or spain who are of course the favourites? they are having a drink, but we will continue with all the bills appear on bbc news. hello there. we're just coming up to the half way point of the month, and there are already a number of places that have seen in excess of the july average rainfall, particularly across southern and eastern england, the northeast of aberdeenshire, too. leading the league of misery is loftus, where we've had well over double thejuly average rainfall, and there's a bit more on the way as well as we'll see over the next few days. now, on sunday, we did manage to see a bit of sunshine across southern and western areas of the uk, but the same area of low pressure out in the north sea continued to feed patches of rain in to parts of north east england and eastern scotland, where it will stay quite damp overnight for some. temperatures around 10 or 11 degrees overnight. and into monday morning we start to see the next area of low pressure
5:56 pm
moving in from the southwest. this is going to be bringing a belt of heavy rain across england and wales through monday, monday night and into tuesday as well. the first signs of the rain, well, arriving across wales and southwest england, the rain turning heavy here quickly through monday morning with a chance of some rumbles of thunder, some localised flooding before the rain extends into south east england, east anglia, the midlands. north of that for northern england, northern ireland and scotland, it's a largely dry day with some pleasant spells of warm sunshine. top temperatures reaching the low 20s here, which will feel very pleasant. but through monday night we've got more rain to come, extending its way northwards and eastwards across england and wales, with the rain across eastern areas of england reluctant to move away through tuesday. and this is part of the uk that has seen the most rainfall so far this month. so it looks like we'll see another dollop working in here monday night and into tuesday. against scotland and northern ireland, not faring too badly on tuesday, although there'll be some heavy showers, i think, for east scotland, parts of north east england.
5:57 pm
where the sunshine comes out, temperatures reached the low 20s. and then something we've been hoping to see for a while. an area of high pressure moves in for wednesday. you can pencil in a decent day. most areas will be bright with some spells of lengthy sunshine, and it's going to feel warm in that sunshine as well, with temperatures reaching 24 celsius in london. 24 is actually average for this time of the year, but in that strong july sun it will feel very pleasant. the fine weather hangs around for most of england, wales, eastern scotland through thursday before we start to see the weather patterns return to rather more unsettled looking weather picture into the following weekend, with rain or showers around and temperatures back below average for the time of year.
