to shoot at donald trump was purchased by crook's father — we think around six months ago. cbs reporter ross dee mattay is in butler with the lastest on the investigation. behind me is the butler farm showgrounds, the site of former president trump's rally yesterday and now the assassination attempt on his life. and it's been a busy morning. we've seen a huge state police presence. those state troopers are the ones that have maintained the perimeter around the farm showgrounds — essentially not letting anyone in or out of the grounds while the fbi now leads the investigation into this attempted assassination on the former president's life. so, er, essentially, members of the media are now lining the perimeter trying to see whatever we can beyond this fence, but we're still a few hundred yards away from where the actual rally was held. and i'm sure you can see the massive american flags suspended in the air behind me between two cranes. that is the typical backdrop for the former president's rallies, and he tends to speak on a stage

right below that. so that is the actual site of the rally itself. and now the attempted assassination on former president trump's life. and i actuallyjust got done speaking with a resident of butler, someone who actually attended yesterday's rally, and he was kind of telling me about what butler's like. it's very rural out here. we've seen a lot of cornfields, so we would consider this farm country in western pennsylvania. it's just about a0 minutes north of pittsburgh, which is obviously a major city here in pennsylvania. but this is trump country. if you check the voting records, and as this gentleman so aptly pointed out to us, he won this area very handily in both 2016 and 2020. so this is a trump stronghold, which makes yesterday's assassination attempt that much more shocking. as you were saying at the start of that answer, the fbi, that is a crime scene now. they've already started their investigations. i suppose one of the critical things is to try to work out the exact sequence of events.

in terms of those conversations you've been having, what have people been saying to you? well, that is the big question here in butler, is how? how was this shooter able to get so close to the former president, skirt around security? by all accounts, everyone who went into the rally actually went through metal detectors. it appears that the shooter was on the outside of the secured perimeter. that being said, though, it is the job of the secret service to make sure there are no threats within any sort of shooting range. and obviously there was some sort of mistake, some sort of mishap made by the former president's private security team in clearing this area, or else this shooter would not have been able to fire off between six and eight shots. that's what our senior senior law enforcement officials are telling us about the shooting itself. so the big question is how? how was the shooter able to pull this off?

and that is what is centred. that's what this investigation by the fbi is centred around. hopefully we'll have answers to that in the coming days. coming days. but are we expecting updates from certainly the local law enforcement officers there as well in the in the coming minutes and hours? matthew, we haven't heard anything in terms of a press gathering or new information being released by the fbi or the secret service. i had a short conversation with a state trooper wondering that exact question. am i in the right place as a member of the media to get the newest information? and he didn't really have a good answer for me. keep in mind, this was a few hours ago, but i think this kind of speaks to the chaos now in the hours surrounding the fallout from this attempted assassination on the former president's life, we haven't heard any update in terms of when we'll be receiving new information. but of course, as soon as we do, we'll pass that along to you. that was our cbs colleague talking to us from the scene a short time ago. rina shah is a republican strategist — she says she's never seen the us more fractured. my first reaction was tears

in my eyes, actually. and i realised that a lot of people who aren't in politics think that those of us who work in politics don't have a heart. but look, when you're seeing that kind of imagery, the most immediate former president of the united states be shot at, and the shrill shrieking from the crowd, the popping sounds that continued even after donald trump hit the ground and was protected by secret service agents on top, it was the kind of scene that i could have imagined some years ago but had put out of my mind. you know, look, i've been part of a group of operatives for the past eight years that has been warning about the rhetoric leading to actual physical violence. and unfortunately, that was not a fantasy, but it was reality yesterday — and i think i still remain very shook. i'm upset. i don't know how the country moves forward. and i think that uncertainty is breeding a great deal of anxiety in people on both sides

of the aisle. the house speaker talked about dialling down the rhetoric. exactly the point that you are making. you would accept, though, that the rhetoric comes from both sides, because we were talking only about an hour or so ago to richard goodstein, a former adviser to the clintons. and he went through the various posts, the various images from the former president — making the point that this has become central to what we've been seeing in us politics. and in his view, largely driven by the former president. we're not even a full 2a hours after everything that happened in butler, pennsylvania, at that rally. but i can very safely say that the former president trump definitely kicked open the door to political violence, and it increased under his tenure in the white house. and so, even though he was kicked out of the white house in 2020, he's really never left the podium. he still behaves in a very

presidential manner — presidential meaning not in terms of decorum, but in terms of really acting like he's still in power, acting like he's the most fit, the better leader than joe biden. and look... and that's what's on the ballot this november. as of right now, these conventions hold incredible possibilities, though. the republicans will meet next week in milwaukee and in chicago. next month, the democrats will convene. regardless of which way you look at the situation, it is a tough, tough moment for all americans. what do you do? do you stay home, or do you show up to vote against somebody or for somebody? the moment feels very fractured, and i'm not really sure how to talk past this to my fellow americans, because we've never been here before. as a nation, operatives like me have never had to function under these circumstances. and let mejust add this bit here. as somebody who's worked squarely in politics for nearly two decades now, i couldn't have scripted it better in the aftermath of trump being shot

at on the rally stage. he emerged with his fist pumped in the air, looking angry, looking victorious, looking like "they didn't take me down, "they tried". that's the exact kind of thing that the democrats should fear. is trump projecting strength, strength, strength all the way towards november? that is really tough for the democrats to counter. yes, we were hearing from one of our correspondents talking about the likelihood, the high likelihood that all of this ends up getting politicised in the months ahead. it was interesting, though, what you were saying there, because as we look ahead to november, certainly from your answer, you still are struggling to work out the ramifications, the implications of what this means for the next few months? look, biden and trump are both within three years of each other. they're both very old men. and i don't mean to sound ageist here, but the average retirement age from coast to coast is anywhere between age 61 and 67. we're talking about octogenarians

here who really should have passed the baton. both of them. you know, there have been severe calls for biden to drop out and since his debate performance against trump. but, you know, trump should also be called on to drop out. both of these men really need to look at the next generation of leadership. our nation faces so many... really challenges. the problems that we face are really great, and they require innovative new solutions that are rooted in some degree of... how else can i put it? than experience with new ideas, new technologies? neither biden or trump can exhibit that. and i think that's really problematic. and younger americans are taking notice. i mean, this shooter is a 20—year—old shooter. there's no doubt he was radicalised. it doesn't matter whether he was a registered republican or prior to registering as a republican.

recently said that mark milley, his former head of thejoint chiefs of staff, should be executed. donald trump posted, as you saw online, images of a bound and gagged joe biden in the back of a pick—up truck. and he marked nancy pelosi's husband, who was clubbed almost to death. so, this notion that somehow trump's hands are clean is, i have two confess, a bit much. it is trump's rhetoric that is leading this and, honestly, the fact that the shooter was a registered republican is something that i'm sure democrats, i hate to say, were greatly relieved at. because any
