there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. in other news, carlos alcaraz wins the wimbledon men's singles title for a second year running, beating novak djokovic. and there's just two hours to go before england face spain in the euro final in berlin, and england fans believe. england will win tonight. and i've never been more sure of anything in my life. hello, welcome to the programme. donald trump has called on americans to stand united after he narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in pennsylvania.
6:01 pm
mr trump said: "we will fear not, but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness. our love goes out to the other victims and their families." this is the moment that donald trump was shot. ., ~ ., this is the moment that donald trump was shot. . ~ . ., ., ~' this is the moment that donald trump was shot. . ~ . . . was shot. take a look at what happened--- _ the fbi says the gunman, who was on a nearby roof, killed a spectator and wounded two others before being shot dead by snipers. and as you can see, security agents rushed to protect the former us president. they hurried him off stage with blood on his face. in a social media post, mr trump said a bullet had pierced his ear. this image obtained by the entertainment news outlet tmz shows the exact moment the shooter — who is lying on his stomach — lines up his shot from the roof. clearly questions about how we was able to do that without being stopped. the gunman was shot dead moments after that. the fbi has identified 20—year—old thomas matthew crooks as the suspect
6:02 pm
in the attempted assassination. these pictures are from his graduatiom ceremony. authorities are now investigating how he was able to get so close, and it is also being reported that bomb—making materials were found in his vehicle and in his home. the republican national convention is due to start on monday — our north america correspondent, nada tawfik, joins us live now. we were hearing a press conference just moments earlier. irate we were hearing a press conference just moments earlier.— we were hearing a press conference just moments earlier. we have heard now from josh _ just moments earlier. we have heard now from josh shapiro. _ just moments earlier. we have heard now from josh shapiro. he _ just moments earlier. we have heard now from josh shapiro. he refused i just moments earlier. we have heard| now from josh shapiro. he refused to answer questions about the investigation. we know authorities say they are working tirelessly to try to determine a potential motive here. but he says he wants to leave any comments about the investigation to them. what he did do was speak about the 50—year—old man who died at the rally. he paid tribute to
6:03 pm
him, saying that he was a volunteer fire chief, that he does over, trying to shield and save his family when that gunfire rang out and died as a result. and he also said he had spoken to the families of the others who were still critically injured, two other gentlemen still critically injured in hospital. we are waiting to hearfrom presidentjoe biden shortly. he is going to again address the nation. he was able to speak to former president donald trump. the white house describing that as a short, respectful phone call. but he has been briefed by law enforcement, along with the vice president, kamala harris, so we will wait to see in his comments if he offers any more insight into that attempted assassination. find offers any more insight into that attempted assassination. and nada tawfik, while _ attempted assassination. and nada tawfik, while we _ attempted assassination. and nada tawfik, while we await _ attempted assassination. and nada tawfik, while we await president i tawfik, while we await president biden to speak, just in terms of questioning about the ability of this man to get so close. 0k, he was
6:04 pm
outside of the periphery of where donald trump was speaking, but still, there will be a lot of questions when it comes to the secret service and their ability to intercept this man earlier. absolutely. i mean, with the nation shaken and in shock, that is the question that was first and foremost on everyone*s mines, because the shooter, withinjust moments on everyone*s mines, because the shooter, within just moments of members of the crowd, and there had been numerous eyewitness testimonies about this, minutes of noticing a suspicious character and law enforcement on the scene trying to approach him and suss him out, he was able to get on the roof of a nearby building, just 400 feet away, and opened fire. as seeing in that video and those historic images just how close the bullet came to hitting donald trump, grazing his year. but law enforcement and the fbi saying it was absolutely shocking that the shooter was able to get into that
6:05 pm
position. house republicans have now summoned the head of the secret service to testify on july 22 about what happened and how that happened. so many republicans kind of calling into question how this failure could have taken place. legislators now, a bipartisan group of legislators, are calling for legislation to ask for additional security, notjust for donald trump, butjoe biden, rfk junior, also running during this campaign. all questions surrounding that, for sure. 50 campaign. all questions surrounding that. for sure-— campaign. all questions surrounding that, for sure. so many questions as the investigation _ that, for sure. so many questions as the investigation gets _ that, for sure. so many questions as the investigation gets under- that, for sure. so many questions as the investigation gets under way. . the investigation gets under way. nada tawfikjoining us live from milwaukee. that is where the republican national convention is due to start on monday. 50 many questions. we're getting more details now about who thomas crooks was.
6:06 pm
he was from bethel park in pennsylvania, about 70km, that's 43 miles from butler, the site of the attempted assassination. the fbi says at the time of the shooting crooks had not been carrying id, so investigators used dna to identify him. the school district has confirmed in a statement he graduated in 2022 from bethel park high school, us media is reporting that state voter records show that crooks was a registered republican. he is also reported to have donated 15 dollars to liberal campaign group, actblue, in 2021. it's used as an online fundraising platform for democratic candidates. the associated press news agency reports that law enforcement officials believe the weapon used to shoot at donald trump was purchased by crook's father — we think around six months ago. the bbc*s tom bateman is in bethel park, talking to those who knew thomas crooks.
6:07 pm
he spoke to summer barkley, who went to school with him, about what he was like then. he was always getting good grades on tests, everything like that. he was very passionate about history, and from what i knew with my friends, he was going to government type classes. anything in government or history, these seem to know what he was talking about. but it was nothing out of the ordinary. he was a nice kid and i have never had an experience with him where i was like," he is not nice." he was always nice and i was i was friendly with him. ., .,, ., always nice and i was i was friendly with him. ., ., ~' with him. one of those who knew thomas crooks _ with him. one of those who knew thomas crooks at _ with him. one of those who knew thomas crooks at school. - richard painter is the former chief ethics lawyer at the white house for george w bush. he's currently a law professor at the university of minnesota. welcome to the programme at what is a time of shock for the us nation. thank you for inviting me today.
6:08 pm
this is indeed a shock. and we have had of course political assassinations before. assassination attempts and assassinations. president kennedy lost his nightlife. we had attempts on the life of ronald reagan. and we have had presidents from canada shot, george wallace in 1972. and this is a very tragic day for the united states, and we really need to come to grips with the fact that there are those who are so mentally ill that they would do something like this. and that our gun laws allow people access to guns who really shouldn't. here, apparently his father bought the gun. there needs to be an investigation into what kind of safety there was with the gun there. but once again, the united states has a terrible problem
6:09 pm
with loose gun laws, a lack of enforcement and the crazy people like this who can get a high—powered rifle and take a shot. i have to say, the secret service... clearly with an air rifle*s range of the stage. the secret service should have added a person up there on the rooftop, not had a sniper up there who was taking a shot at the former president. figs who was taking a shot at the former resident. * , , . ., president. as the investigation starts getting _ president. as the investigation starts getting under— president. as the investigation starts getting under way - president. as the investigation starts getting under way and l president. as the investigation - starts getting under way and those kinds of questions are being asked, ijust wonder if kinds of questions are being asked, i just wonder if we pull out to the bigger picture of what is happening in the united states, a polarised nation as so many different nations are becoming when it comes to political beliefs, which political sites people are on. is it time to turn down that rhetoric we have been hearing?
6:10 pm
turn down that rhetoric we have been hearin: ? ., , turn down that rhetoric we have been hearin: ? . , , hearing? certainly, extremist rhetoricjustifying _ hearing? certainly, extremist rhetoricjustifying violence . hearing? certainly, extremist. rhetoricjustifying violence does not help, particularly combined with the loose gun laws we have in the united states. those two combined are a very, very toxic combination. and we have those on the extreme left you were justify violence, those on the extreme right who would justify violence. people would justify violence. people would justify the attack on january six, where people would somehow excuse the terrorist attacks by hamas on israel. there are those who would justify and seek to excuse violence, and that is certainly very dangerous rhetoric. but the united states is alone among the industrialised nations in the world of having some of the worst gun laws, that allow crazy people like this to get access to guns stop and i don't think anyone could dispute that someone who thinks there is an excuse for assassinating donald trump or any other political candidate, someone who believes there is an excuse for
6:11 pm
thatis who believes there is an excuse for that is mentally ill. the question is, how do you keep mentally ill people away from guns? that is going to be the challenge that i hope american leaders and voters will take seriously. i5 american leaders and voters will take seriously.— take seriously. is it something that... take seriously. is it something that- -- we _ take seriously. is it something that... we have _ take seriously. is it something that... we have to _ take seriously. is it something that... we have to rememberl take seriously. is it something - that... we have to remember that another person lost their lives while this shooting happened. 0f while this shooting happened. of course, he has been identified as a volunteer fire chief, corey comperatore, who was aged 50 years old. apparently, he dived on his family, trying to detect them. just in terms of the gun laws, help us to understand, as an international audience looking at what is happening in the united states, seeing massacres have been time and time again, and these high—powered rifles are able to be procured so easily? rifles are able to be procured so easil ? , easily? indeed, these high-powered rifles can be — easily? indeed, these high-powered rifles can be procured _ easily? indeed, these high-powered rifles can be procured very _ easily? indeed, these high-powered rifles can be procured very easily. i rifles can be procured very easily. in many states, this assassin was 20
6:12 pm
years old, in many states a 20—year—old can buy a high—powered rifle just like this one but is not permitted to buy a can of beer until age 21. unfortunately, obtaining a high—powered weapon in the united states is just about as easy as obtaining a can of beer. it is a very toxic situation, particularly when combined with justifications and rhetoric thatjustifies violence from the extreme right and the extreme left. 50 we have to find out what happened with this individual, apparently he was making bombs in his house, that is what some of the reports are, but there is also a different story when each one of these cases. but once again, we have a serious problem in our country separating mentally ill people from high—powered firearms. separating mentally ill people from high-powered firearms.— high-powered firearms. professor painter, high-powered firearms. professor painter. we _ high-powered firearms. professor painter, we have _ high-powered firearms. professor painter, we have to _ high-powered firearms. professor painter, we have to leave - high-powered firearms. professor painter, we have to leave it - high-powered firearms. professor painter, we have to leave it on - high-powered firearms. professor. painter, we have to leave it on that difficult note. richard painter, professor of law at minnesota university, thank you very much for
6:13 pm
sharing your thoughts, is that investigation into what happened during that assassination attempt in the united states is obviously under way. we do have a life page on our website for you to take any of those developments that are happening. an investigation is now under way, a lot of questions to be asked. for the time being, we are going to turn to berlin now. in less than two hours, england take on spain in the euro 2024 final. excitment*s running high for die—hard football fans. the england men's squad are hoping to win their first major trophy in almost six decades. will england defy the odds — or will favourites spain snatch the glory? we have been hearing voices from england fans feeling pretty confident, but let's face it spain are the stronger team, they are the favourites. but we shall see what happens when the game kicks off in

their front room every single time england have played. we will be bracing ourselves. we will be watching all of this on our website as well, we will have a life page the moment kick—off starts with all of the pre—match. thank you for watching. hello there. we're just coming up to the half way point of the month, and there are already a number of places that have seen in excess of the july average rainfall, particularly across southern and eastern england — the northeast of aberdeenshire, too. leading the league of misery is loftus, where we've had well over double thejuly average rainfall, and there's a bit more on the way as well as we'll see over the next few days. now, on sunday, we did manage to see a bit of sunshine across southern and western areas of the uk, but the same area of low pressure out in the north sea continued to feed patches of rain in to parts of northeast england and eastern scotland, where it will stay quite damp overnight for some.

temperatures around 10 or 11 degrees overnight. and into monday morning, we start to see the next area of low pressure moving in from the southwest. this is going to be bringing a belt of heavy rain across england and wales through monday, monday night and into tuesday as well. the first signs of the rain — well, arriving across wales and southwest england, the rain turning heavy here quickly through monday morning with a chance of some rumbles of thunder, some localised flooding before the rain extends into southeast england, east anglia, the midlands. north of that for northern england, northern ireland and scotland, it's a largely dry day with some pleasant spells of warm sunshine. top temperatures reaching the low 20s here, which will feel very pleasant. but through monday night, we've got more rain to come, extending its way northwards and eastwards across england and wales, with the rain across eastern areas of england reluctant to move away through tuesday. and this is part of the uk that's seen the most rainfall so far this month. so it looks like we'll see another dollop working in here monday night and into tuesday. again, scotland and northern ireland not faring

too badly on tuesday, although there'll be some heavy showers, i think, for east scotland, parts of north east england. where the sunshine comes out, temperatures reached the low 20s. and then something we've been hoping to see for a while. an area of high pressure moves in for wednesday. you can pencil in a decent day. most areas will be bright with some spells of lengthy sunshine, and it's going to feel warm in that sunshine as well, with temperatures reaching 24 celsius in london. 24 is actually average for this time of the year, but in that strong july sun it will feel very pleasant. the fine weather hangs around for most of england, wales, eastern scotland through thursday, before we start to see the weather patterns return to rather more unsettled looking weather picture into the following weekend, with rain or showers around and temperatures back below average for the time of year.
