and euphoric scenes in spain after a 2—1victory over england in the euro 2024 final. welcome to bbc news. we are live in milwaukee, wisconsin, wherejust 2a hours after surviving an assassination attempt, former us president donald trump has arrived to join the republican national convention. mr trump, saying today that while he considered delaying the trip. he could not allow a "shooter" to force a change in his schedule. around 6:11 local time on saturday evening, at a campaign event in pennsylvania, mr trump was grazed by a bullet that came from a shooter on the rooftop of a nearby shed. as shots rang out, mr trump put his hand to his ear, before dropping to the ground. a secret service sniper
12:01 am
returned fire, killing the shooter, who has been identified by the fbi as 20—year—old thomas matthew crooks. stunning photos showed mr trump with with blood streaming down his face underneath the scrum of secret service agents who swarmed to protect him. trump later confirmed he a bullet hit his right ear. after being raised to his feet, trump raised his fist in the air, gesturing to the crowd. questions are being asked about how the secret service failed to stop the suspect firing shots. on the eve of the forthcoming republican national convention here in milwaukee, the secret service says there will be "no change" to their security plan. we to their security plan. are confident in the current plan we are confident in the current plan we have. it is based off a technical assessment, protective intelligence, and we are continuously monitoring information related to events, so we are confident in the plans we have and are moving forward with those plans. we have new details tonight about the suspected shooter, thomas matthew crooks, though we do not yet know his motive. crooks was from bethel park,
12:02 am
pennsylvania, about an hour south of where he tried to assassinate former president trump. he was 20 years old. we're learning tonight that crooks had a membership at a nearby gun club for at least the past year. we've also learned he allegedly used his father's gun in the attack on trump. one of crook's former classmates told cbs news he was bullied in high school over his appearance, and often sat in the cafeteria alone. other classmates described him a different way — as a normal, quiet kid. here's one of his old classmates speaking to bbc news earlier today. he was always getting good grades on tests, things like that, he was passionate about history, and provide you with my friends, he was good in government classes, so anything in government or history, he seemed to know what he was talking about, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. he was a nice kid, and i never had an experience with him where i was like he, you know, is not nice. he was always nice, and i was always frantic to him.

youre on the law enforcement caucus — what do you want to see in this investigation? first of all, it's great to be with you tonight. i do look forward to the convention starting this week. you know, it is horrific to see the former president of the united states whether it's an assassination attempt on his life, it is really uncalled for. it is horrific. listen, this isn't who we are as americans. we can have our political differences, but there is no room for political violence in this country, and i am so thankful, i pray to god that president trump survived that president trump survived that assassination attempt. he's in good spirits. he is in milwaukee now. he is with the republican party during this convention and looking forward to hearing his acceptance speech. to hearing his acceptance seech. ., ,, ., ,

12:12 am
the oversight is going to bring them in. we want to know what happened, why it happened and it could've been prevented. at this moment, let's see, let's allow our federal and local law enforcement to work the scene, get the proper information so that when they deliver that news to the american people, it is as accurate as possible in that timely fashion. indeed. some the — that timely fashion. indeed. some the questions - that timely fashion. indeed. some the questions of- that timely fashion. indeed. i some the questions of course unanswered. we saw the secret service talking about the convention here in milwaukee saying that they are not going to make major changes to their preparations. they said, "we've got this" in terms of security for the convention. there are questions being asked about wisconsin's open carry laws, for example. do you have concerns?— for example. do you have concerns? ., ., , concerns? so we had a briefing with the united _ concerns? so we had a briefing with the united states - concerns? so we had a briefing with the united states capitoli with the united states capitol police earlier today. they have been working this security for about a year and a half now. it's not a federal law enforcement but our local law

12:20 am
rodney, that would have also been my question to you. what do you anticipate we will see from both president trump when he eventually takes the stage at the convention but also his many surrogates who will be speaking on stage?- many surrogates who will be speaking on stage? well, first off, i speaking on stage? well, first off. i agree — speaking on stage? well, first off, i agree with _ speaking on stage? well, first off, i agree with stephanie. i off, i agree with stephanie. president biden tonight has got to deliver a message of unity, has got — to deliver a message of unity, has got to— to deliver a message of unity, has got to ask his party to tone — has got to ask his party to tone down the rhetoric and, frankly. _ tone down the rhetoric and, frankly, as we all know, president trump has never been one to _ president trump has never been one to tone down a lot of rhetoric. _ one to tone down a lot of rhetoric, but post debate, he has been _ rhetoric, but post debate, he has been the most disciplined candidate i've ever witnessed when — candidate i've ever witnessed when it — candidate i've ever witnessed when it comes to a trump campaign. so he was already prior— campaign. so he was already prior to — campaign. so he was already prior to the shooting, i believe, showing the american people — believe, showing the american people that he could tone down that rhetoric. and i think the rnc— that rhetoric. and i think the rnc and _ that rhetoric. and i think the rnc and him coming to milwaukee will continue to highlight what he has — will continue to highlight what he has done to change himself. i he has done to change himself. i certainly— he has done to change himself. i certainly hope that republicans up and down the ticket — republicans up and down the ticket who are going to be on stage — ticket who are going to be on

you can hear the fireworks are already going off. england's grief is spain's glory and spain went into tonight's final as the favourites. they had won all of their matches going into tonight, and tonight's victory makes them the only european nation to win all of their games in an international tournament. now, i have to say you might not get it from them, but actually, as spain began the euros, many spaniards actually doubted the quality of their team. there were fewer players from the star clubs real madrid and barcelona, but there was a lot more. inexperience in youth. but it is the youth that has shone through. they are the youthful, the youthful stars at they are the youthful stars of the team and now are now national heroes. they will be, they will be, they will be revered as heroes for many a long,

12:26 am
for the channel islands, turning very wet across southern england, south west england and also wales likely to see some particularly heavy rain through the day, which could give rise to some localised flooding and some transport disruption. that cloud spilling its way northwards all the while across the midlands, north wales, eventually into northern england. northern ireland not doing too badly — some sunny spells but increasing amounts of cloud. sunny spells and just one or two showers across scotland, although it could stay quite grey and quite murky up towards the far north — 14 degrees there for lerwick. but come further south, a fairly warm feel, particularly for these north sea coast where it has been so cool over recent days. temperatures getting up into the low 20s. now, that wet weather continuing to spill its way northwards across parts of england and wales as we go through monday night into the first part of tuesday morning, something a little bit drier and clearer out towards the west. and that rain will linger
12:27 am
for parts of northern england down into the midlands, east anglia as we go through the day on tuesday. further west, though, we will see some spells of sunshine, albeit with some scattered heavy showers. and temperatures on tuesday, well, it's not going to feel too bad if you get yourself into some sunshine. typically high teens, low 20s celsius, but perhaps a little bit cooler than that where the rain lingers for any length of time. now, as we move into the middle part of the week, this area of high pressure will tend to build. and that means actually on wednesday, a lot of fine weather around, some spells of sunshine, just one or two showers here and there. the frontal system is likely to bring rain into northern ireland later in the day, but ahead of that it is going to be pretty warm. in fact, temperatures down towards the south east corner could well get to 24 or 25 degrees. now, that drier and warmer weather will hold on for some of us as we head through the end of the week. but generally the further north and west you are across the uk turning unsettled again, turning cooler as well.
