live from milwaukee — where donald trump has now arrived for the republican national convention, one day after an attempt on his life in pennsylvania. the former president said he will not allow a shooter or potential assassin to force him to change his plans. we are expecting presidentjoe biden to adress the nation live from the oval office any moment. speaking earlier today, the president promised a swift and thorough investigation into the assassination attempt. questions are being asked about how the secret service failed to stop the suspect firing shots. and with attention now focused on protecting the former president and other attendees in milwaukee, the secret service says — they are fully prepared. we are confident in the current plan that we have, based of a technical assessment, protective intelligence and we continuously monitor

information related to the events so we are confident in the plans we have and we are moving forward with those plans. live now to the oval office and president biden. we must stand together. yesterday's shooting at donald trump *s rally in pennsylvania called on all of us to take a step back. take stock of where we are, how we go forward from here. thankfully, former trump is not seriously injured. i spoke to him last night and i am grateful he is doing well andjill and i am grateful he is doing well andjilland i keep him am grateful he is doing well andjill and i keep him and am grateful he is doing well andjilland i keep him and his family and our prayers. we also send our deepest condolences to the family of the vic who was killed. corey was of husband, father, a volunteer firefighter and a hero shielding his family from the bullets. we should hold his family and all those injured in our prayers. earlier today i spoke about an ongoing investigation. we do not know the motive of the shooter yet, we do not know his opinions or affiliations. we do not know whether he had help or support

or if he communicated with anyone else. law enforcement professionals as i speak are investigating those questions. tonight i want to speak to what we do know. a former president was shot, an american citizen killed while simply exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choosing. we cannot and must not walk down this road in america. we have travelled before in history. violence has never been the answer, whether it is with members of congress in both parties being targeted and shot or a violent mob attacking the capital onjanuary 6 or a capital on january 6 or a beautiful capital onjanuary 6 or a beautiful attack on the spouse of the former speaker of the house nancy pelosi. more information and intimidation on election officials of the kidnapping plot against a sitting governor. all the attempted assassination on donald trump. there is no place in america for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. period. no exceptions. we
1:03 am
cannot allow this violence to be realised. the political temperature in this country has gotten heated. it is time to cool down. we all have a responsibility to do that. we have deeply felt and strong disagreements and the stakes in this election are enormously high. i said this election are enormously high. isaid it this election are enormously high. i said it many times, that the choice we make in this election will shape the future of america and the world for decades to come. i believe that with all my soul. i know that millions of my fellow americans believe that as well. and some have a different view as to the direction our country should take. this agreement is part of human nature and must never become a killing field. politics must leave room for peaceful debate, to pursue justice, to make decisions back by the declaration of independence and our

constitution. we stand for in america not of extremism and fury but of decency and grace. all of us now face a time of testing is this election approaches and the higher the stakes are more fervent and passionate it becomes. this places an added burden on each of us to ensure that no matter how strong our convictions we must never descend into violence. republican convention will start tomorrow. i have no doubt they will criticise my record and offer their own vision for this country. i will travel this week and making the case for my vision of this country, ourvision. iwill continue to speak out strongly for our democracy, stand up for our constitution and rule of law. to call for action at the ballot box, no violence on our streets. that is how democracy should work. we debate and disagree and compare and contrast the character of the candidates, the records and the issues on the agenda, the vision for america. but in
1:05 am
america we resolve our difference at the ballot box. that is how we do it. at the ballot box, not with bullets. the power to change america should always rest in the hands of the people, not in the hands of the people, not in the hands of would—be assassins. the past competing visions of the campaign should be resolved peacefully, not through acts of violence. we are the greatest country on earth and i believe that with every power of my being. so tonight i ask every american to recommit, to make america... think about it. what has made america so special? here in america everyone must be treated with dignity and respect and hate must have no safe harbour. here in america we need to get out of our silos and only listen to those who we agree. misinformation is rampant. where foreign actors fan the flames of our division to shape the outcome is with their interest, not ours. let's
1:06 am
remember, here in america a union is the most elusive of goals right now. nothing is more important right now. we must stand together. we can do this. from the beginning our founders understood the power of passion. and they created a democracy. it gave reason and balance a chance to prevail over brute force. that is the america we must be. the american democracy must remain in good faith. american democracy where the rule of law is respected, american democracy where decency and dignity and fair play and not just quaint notions but leaving —— living and breathing realities. we know that those who have come before us and those who gave their lives for this country, we owe that to ourselves. we owe it to our children and grandchildren. look, let's never lose sight of who we are. let's remember that we are the united states of
