and more sunshine around and temperatures will start to climb. could see 20 in eastern scotland, northern ireland and highs of 2a in london. 75 fahrenheit. warmer still through thursday. best weather front will introduce rain to the far north—west but for most, south—westerly flow driving up the warm air. a bit embarrassing but could be the first time this month we have seen 25 degrees. warmer on friday but look what is waiting in the wings for the start of the weekend. thanks, louise. and that's bbc news at six. now its time to join our colleagues for the news colleagues for the news where you are, goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm gavin ramjaun. the day after the night before — england's footballers are back home after losing the euro 2024 final — but what now for manager gareth southgate?
6:31 pm
a very different feeling in madrid — as spain arrive home victorious — but is this a team that can dominate for years to come? i believe and i understand that spain has a group that can market era. —— mark and era. and with the world cup just two years away — headaches perhaps for the host nation, after crowd trouble in miami marrs the copa america final. also coming up on sportsday... hewett is a happy man — as alfie finally gets his hands on the wheelchair singles title — admitting the pressure was beginning to weigh heavy on his shoulders. and after winning the scottish 0pen yesterday, robert macintyre can now aim for another victory in front of his home crowd — at the open at royal troon.
6:32 pm
hello there, and welcome along to the programme. and as england fans know all too well, it's very much a case of 58 years and counting since that major trophy proverbially *came home'. the dust is finally beginning to settle on england's european championship final defeat to spain last night. it was a match, their opponents dominated, two euros finals in a row england have now lost — and the questions begin over gareth southgate*s future as manager. 0ur correspondent nesta mcgregor is in berlin for us. berlin is a city steeped in history. we have berlin is a city steeped in history. we have the berlin is a city steeped in history. we have the famous berlin is a city steeped in history. we have the famous wall berlin is a city steeped in history. we have the famous wall and berlin is a city steeped in history. we have the famous wall and the brandenburg gate behind me and countless other sites. england unfortunately not making a piece of their own history last night. some fans remaining in the city at the hotel to see this team off but as you can imagine it was not the euphoric experience many hoped. none of the staff or players stopping to speak with media, plenty of luggage
6:33 pm
but no trophy. what next? england don't have long before they make changes if they make any. there is a world cup in two years a nation league fixtures to come. gareth got speaking after the game said there were fitness concerns and harry kane was not 100% fit, luke shaw gave germany injured only starting one game and i happen to be the final. you speak to many england fans and they say they have a great squad with great individuals but it is the case of getting that makes a right and as you know, the long wait comes on. since the 1966 the england men have not won a major trophy. with each tournament they don't when the question will be asked by each generation, when will they deliver. nesta mcgregor there. so the long wait goes on and for manager gareth southgate, it's been a particularly bruising campaign, given the criticism through the groups. but how does southgate*s record at major tournaments stack up, following that defeat last night? he's taken england closer to
6:34 pm
world cup or european championship glory than any manager other than sir alf ramsey, reaching back—to—back european championship finals and a world cup semifinal in 2018. this is his major tournament record in numbers — 26 games at the world cup and euros — southgate*s side have won 1a, drawn seven and lost five for a 53.8% win rate, scoring 44 goals and conceding 20. that major tournament record compares well to southgate*s overall figures with england which reads 61 wins from 102 games with 2a draws and 17 defeats. so what next for gareth — and the national side. joe lynsky reports. 58 years of waiting — another fall at the last step. now for gareth southgate, england waits for his next one. very proud of the group of players. we have now been consistently back in the matches that matter. it's the last step that we haven't been able to do.
6:35 pm
it's hard to reflect so soon after a defeat like this. i need to have those conversations with important people behind the scenes. and, i'm obviously not going to discuss that publicly first. for eight years, he's led a team away from the low point, the last euros before southgate brought that last 16 defeat. and england's embarrassment is iceland's ecstasy! his four major tournaments have all brought near misses, but 2024 was a different kind of pressure. a squad with the attackers no england coach has had before, and yet from seven games at these euros they scored just eight goals. for england, there were moments, but spain beat them with a plan. if that was the difference, some will blame it on the coach. when gareth started off, england were in big trouble, you know, so he's dragged them from the very
6:36 pm
bottom and in taking us to, to a, nearly, a team that can be successful. but expectations are higher and not winning it is not going to be good enough. like i said he gave us some some great moments, but now we need to go forward, to go to the next step. because it'd be such a shame with these players that we have now, if we don't win. southgate*s england contract runs out in december. qualifying starts for the world cup in march. the next days will determine england's plan to get there. the different options include graham potter, who's out of work, and newcastle's eddie howe. on his podcast, gary lineker said jurgen klopp*s worth the call. the fa may yet stick with the man who brought change. one of the most important things, he's got a bunch of young players he's built into a team it's been missing over many generations. we're seeing that and what i like is when the team scores, the subs off the bench are
6:37 pm
jumping on their backs. that indicates very strongly to me that there's a great team spirit, and that's done and engendered by the boss. cucurella gets it back in. 0yarzabal scores for spain! spain's winning goal came on 86 minutes, and england were this close to one more great moment. heading off the line! if mark gay had equalised, the conversation could be different. but now england waits to see if the coach gets extra time. joe lynskey, bbc news. it was always going to be tough for england against this impressive spain team. who've managed to brush aside all the big names who came before them — including hosts germany in the last 8 which went to the last moments of extra time, and beating france in the semis. they won all seven of their matches, becoming the first european side to do so at a major tournament. the team made a triumphant return from berlin, with captain alvaro morata, coach luis de la fuente and spanish federation president pedro rocha posing for pictures with the trophy before the rest of the team disembarked for pictures
6:38 pm
and celebrations of their own. they then travelled to their hotel in madrid, and will be embarking on an open—top bus tour through madrid later this evening. and the squad in the last hour, have their royal seal of approval. meeting with the spanish king at the royal residence in madrid. for european titles a record in the men's game and the players met with the royal family before the parade which will undoubtedly see the thousands lined the streets again. and just take a look at these scenes from across spain last night. the fans celebrated wildly into the evening. as the team won their first major competition in more than 10 years. by no means did they come into this year's tournament as the favourites, but got better and better as the games went on. in, rodri they had the player of the tournament. in teenage sensation lamine yamal, they had the young player of the tournament. dani 0lmo shared the golden boot. so it's a future that's very bright — in all senses — as spanish football journalist ernest macia told me earlier.
6:39 pm
if he asked me at the beginning of these euros i would say spain has few options to win a competition in which france are the favourites and will which germany are hosts in which there are players that can market and era like jude bellingham. so there was little room for spain because talent was too young. however this is not a league competition, this is not champions league so it is a different tournament and spain have grown, have grown in talent like lamine yamal, c can imagine our surprise when they were out in the national team and still spain is doing very well. the confidence has been rising quickly. when we saw the signs of the stylet and his talent was already possible in the short term, notjust the maid or long—term

6:41 pm
has a group that can market era. so while england's men hold their heads high, after that euros run. the pressure is on for sarina wiegman, and her lionesses this week. they're the european champions remember — but they face a pivotal qualifying clash with sweden tomorrow in gothenburg — a draw will seal their spot at next year's euros automatically. katie gornall has more. welcome to the cdn where here tomorrow evening england will play their crucial england qualifier against sweden. they have been training this afternoon, the coach had been speaking to the media but last night like millions of others, they were fans. the team came together to watch the men in their final against spain and of course, we all know what happened next. i asked leah williamson how much she shared in england's disappointment. we did not get quite over the line, a fantastic spanish team i know they will be devastated about it, i think
6:42 pm
it will take a while for them to get over it but us as a country, we have been blessed with incredible tournaments and when the winds come, which i do believe they will, that means we all win.— which i do believe they will, that means we all win. leah williamson watched from _ means we all win. leah williamson watched from the _ means we all win. leah williamson watched from the bench _ means we all win. leah williamson watched from the bench last - means we all win. leah williamson watched from the bench last time i watched from the bench last time england played sweden back in april. finishing 1—1. another draw would be enough to see england through as one of the top two teams in this group as england qualify automatically. it is a fiendishly difficult group that also features france. the coach is under no illusion over challenges ahead as she knows anything can happen come tomorrow. we ahead as she knows anything can happen come tomorrow. we knew this was a very competitive _ happen come tomorrow. we knew this was a very competitive group - happen come tomorrow. we knew this was a very competitive group and - was a very competitive group and that is_ was a very competitive group and that is what has showed so tomorrow is an important game for us, france is an important game for us, france is in the _ is an important game for us, france is in the top — is an important game for us, france is in the top of the group. but we can stitt— is in the top of the group. but we can still become a third in the group — can still become a third in the group and _ can still become a third in the group and first in the group so that is how— group and first in the group so that is how we — group and first in the group so that is how we approach it. we had some very good _ is how we approach it. we had some very good training sessions, everyone _ very good training sessions, everyone is fit and we are ready for tomorrow — everyone is fit and we are ready for tomorrow. we everyone is fit and we are ready for tomorrow. ~ ., ., ., everyone is fit and we are ready for tomorrow— tomorrow. we are told all players are fit and —

are troubling. hard rock stadium is scheduled to close to seven games at the twin 26 world cup. if this was a trust for partial, it did not go well. —— dress rehearsal. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. germany forward thomas muller has announced his retirement from international football. the 34—year—old bayern munich star's decision comes in the wake of germany's defeat to eventual champions spain in the quarterfinals of euro 202a. josh tarling has signed a three—year contract extension to keep him at ineos grenadiers until at least 2027. the 20—year—old welshman won time trial gold at the european road race championships in 2023, followed by a surprise bronze at the world championships in glasgow. and with the olympics just 11 days away from starting — the first wave of british athletes have begun to arrive in paris. athletes from team gb*s archery, boxing and gymnastics team arrived today — with over 320 athletes are expected to represent great britain at this summer's games.

tennis of course, will be part of the olympics and paralympics programmes — and it proved to be third time lucky for alfie hewett yesterday. he finally got his hands on the wimbledon wheelchair men's singles title — to complete a career grand slam — something he called *the best day of his life'. hewett lost the past two singles finals at sw19, but this time he dominated spain's martin de la fuente to win in straight sets. and as if that wasn't enough for one day, a couple of hours later he won the doubles title for a sixth time with partner gordon reid. it felt like it was building each year, the expectation, the pressure. more questions were being asked and it was the last one in my career, grand plan to take off, so it felt like it was always sitting it had to be a wimbledon singles and we had the occasion to do it on the number one court in front of my friends and

eluded him before yesterday and that was mostly i think because he was in a strong position against in the final two years ago and still lost but now he is won the singles and doubles as well with gordon reed for a sixth time meaning is only the second man in history, shingo kunieda and the other, to have one the grand slam set at all for venues and he will not look forward to the paralympics because that is a cold medal that he has so far not been able to win. medal that he has so far not been able to win-— medal that he has so far not been able to win. huge few weeks i had for alfie, let's _ able to win. huge few weeks i had for alfie, let's turn _ able to win. huge few weeks i had for alfie, let's turn our _ able to win. huge few weeks i had for alfie, let's turn our attention l for alfie, let's turn our attention to the davis cup with the news of the gb team, who is in and what can we expect? he the gb team, who is in and what can we exoect?— we expect? he is gone for the team ou would we expect? he is gone for the team you would probably _ we expect? he is gone for the team you would probably expect. - we expect? he is gone for the team you would probably expect. the - we expect? he is gone for the team you would probably expect. the top j you would probably expect. the top three in the singles ranking, jack draper, cameron norrie and dan evans. they r2 must establish doubles players injoe salisbury and neil salsberry who were the top to

6:51 pm
i think there is definitely grounds for optimism for bob to speak, he has yet to win a major championship and he said to us at the start of last week if it was not a major he wanted to win, it would be the scottish open so that victory meant an awful lot to him. the way he did it, yes he had a stroke of good fortune on the 16th when he was in a thick rough and discovered he was standing on a sprinkler head which means he could free drop and capitalised with a brilliant shot into six feet and then holding the eagle putt then to birdie the last, it was the stuff of dreams and it will tell him, when he wants it most, he can't deliver in i think thatis most, he can't deliver in i think that is a precious commodity for any leading golfer. and he gets to celebrate not to say he won. by, leading golfer. and he gets to celebrate not to say he won. a good come back from _ celebrate not to say he won. a good come back from him _ celebrate not to say he won. a good come back from him in _ celebrate not to say he won. a good come back from him in many- celebrate not to say he won. a good i come back from him in many respects given what has happened to mcelroy

there for four years and try to turn to for a two and eight. he should'vejust got, he should've just got, its coming home. a reminder of our top story before we go. england's footballers have arrived back home after losing the euro 2024 final. it's back to back european championship defeats for england and for gareth southgate — who the spotlight now falls upon — and whether he will continue his tenure as the nation's manager — heading into the world cup in 2026. you can find more on all of that as well as the southgate speculation on the bbc sport website. that is it from us here. thank you for watching and we will see you next time. hello there. we should see some improvements in the weather later this week, but we've started the week with cloud and rain, and it's already been a very wet
6:56 pm
july for some eastern parts of england. loftus really stands out. we've had more than twice the normal rainfall. in contrast to here in western scotland, where there's only been 20% of normal rainfall, and it's generally been drier in the west and wetter in the east. but this area of low pressure has been trudging northwards, bringing these outbreaks of rain northwards. we may well see the rain turning heavy and possibly even thundery for a while as it moves its way further north across england and wales. it should turn drier in the south later in the night, and further north in scotland, there will still be some showers around as well. but with more cloud around tonight, it is going to be a bit warmer than it was last night — 13 or 14 degrees. but we start tomorrow with this cloud and rain in wales and parts of northern england, that should get drawn away, and it will brighten up in many places. but there will be some showers as well, some pokey ones developing over the pennines through the midlands,
6:57 pm
and the risk of some thundery downpours in eastern scotland and the northeast of england. those temperatures not that exciting really. 18—19 degrees, i think, quite widely so still a little on the cool side. but that low pressure is taking the rain away, the showers that follow will fade during tomorrow evening, and we'll start to see higher pressure approaching the uk. there are still some weather fronts lingering out in the atlantic that will eventually arrive in the far northwest, and ahead of that, the odd shower is possible in western scotland over the pennines and north wales. but on the whole — a drier day, some sunshine, light winds, getting a bit warmer. nothing too startling, but an improvement on what we've seen 23, maybe 24, in some eastern parts of england. now we do have some weather fronts to bring some rain into the northwest on thursday, but ahead of that, we're drawing up some warmer air on that gentle southerly breeze. it does mean the highest temperatures are going to be across more southeastern parts of the uk, where we could reach 25 degrees for the first time this month. that just shows you
6:58 pm
how cool it's been. temperatures could get even higher, i think, on friday for southeastern parts, but then it cools down into the weekend as we start to see that rain moving down further from the northwest.
