ourteam is in our team is in milwaukee at the republican national convention and donald trump has named his running matejd vance a former critic of mr trump. the convention happening two days after the former president survived an assassination attempt. let's join my colleague whose coverage in milwaukee is also under way. that rhetoric led directly to president trump's attempted assassination. trump, the survivor says he's bringing a message of unity and that is a dramatic change in tone from a man who is usually so pugnacious and belligerent. he's told a conservative newspaper he's completely rewritten his speech saying there is a chance to bring

just as former president donald trump is here in milwaukee for the first day of the republican national convention, presidentjoe biden has resumed campaigning having paused it following this offence on saturday he is now heading to las vegas, nevada of course a battleground state for a campaign event tonight. he stopped off to speak to the media just before getting on air force one for a brief exchange with journalists who asked him about mr trump's choice ofjd vance as his vice presidential running mate and he was also asked about whether in light of the assassination attempt on mr trump, whether joe trump, whetherjoe biden still felt safe with his secret service protection detail. d0 with his secret service protection detail. , ., , ., detail. do you feel safe with your secret service _ detail. do you feel safe with your secret service detail? _ detail. do you feel safe with your secret service detail? yes - detail. do you feel safe with your secret service detail? yes i - detail. do you feel safe with your secret service detail? yes i do. | detail. do you feel safe with your. secret service detail? yes i do. you still believe — secret service detail? yes i do. you still believe in _ secret service detail? yes i do. you still believe in the _ secret service detail? yes i do. you still believe in the secret _ secret service detail? yes i do. you still believe in the secret service, i still believe in the secret service, mr president? yes still believe in the secret service, mr president?— still believe in the secret service, mr president?- what - still believe in the secret service, mr president?- what you mr president? yes i do. what you think ofjd — mr president? yes i do. what you think ofjd vance? _

it is here where human remains have now been found, along with his clothes and possessions. it's a month since the 19—year—old ended up at an airbnb in this mountainous part of the island after a night out. jay had been holidaying with friends when he vanished last month. a huge search was launched for him by the authorities on the island. drones were sent into the air to assist mountain rescue teams, but the official search was eventually called off when no trace of him was found. a statement from the civil guard on tenerife today says, "all indications indicate that it could be the young british man disappeared since lastjune 17th in the absence of a full id." jay was from oswaldtwistle, here in lancashire. ever since he went missing, people have been tying blue ribbons to lamp posts and fences in public places to show that people here were keeping him and his family in their thoughts.

they were, of course, hoping for a much happier outcome than the one we now appear to be facing. it's a shame. it is, it's bad. everyone wants him home. everyone wants an answer, don't they? i think it's hit the community hard round here because he is a local lad and he's well—known. i feel sorry for the family going through this. i know every effort, people going over, especially our local fire service going over to find him. it has hit hard. like so many young people, jay headed to tenerife for the nightlife. his disappearance led to some disturbing conspiracy theories, but his body was found near where his mobile was last used when he called friends to say he was walking the many miles back to his resort. danny savage, bbc news. and, you can see more on this story on the bbc iplayer,

since his cancer diagnosis. it is a positive sign that they are back in play. the trip here to the channel islands, alongside confirmation of the autumn tour to australia, is significant. they are signs that the king's health challenges have stabilised, and a bigger, more ambitious programme for him is now possible. the weather injersey was unpredictable, but the fact that the king is here at all, after a difficult six months, suggests he has much to feel optimistic about. daniela relph, bbc news, st helier injersey. newscast is coming up, first a look at the weather. hello there. monday, we saw a day of contrasts — some pleasant sunny spells across eastern scotland in particular, and a high of 2a degrees around the perth area. that's 75 fahrenheit. totally different story, however, further south and west. a day of heavy rain across cornwall in particular, where we saw three quarters of an inch in a 24—hour
11:22 pm
period, and some of the rain torrential, with thundery downpours in it. now, that weather front is continuing to push its way steadily northwards, and it will linger first thing on tuesday morning. not a bad start, though, for scotland once again, a few scattered sharp showers to the north—west of the great glen. a few showers developing as we go through the day, but on the whole, there will be a good dry slot with some sunny spells coming through. not a bad start into northern ireland, north—west england as well. here's our weatherfront at 10am in the morning, lingering across east yorkshire, lincolnshire, gradually drifting its way eastwards. and then as we go through the afternoon, we'll see sunny spells and scattered showers. but these showers across north—east england, eastern scotland could be heavy with the odd rumble of thunder mixed in there once again. on the whole, winds light, but again still from that cooler north—westerly source. a bit more of a breeze, perhaps, into the far south—east. and temperatures certainly a little bit more subdued. particularly further north, we're looking at highs of 16—20 degrees. moving out of tuesday, though, into wednesday, high pressure is building
11:23 pm
and the wind direction changes to a south—westerly. that will draw up a brief spell of warm weather, so it'll be a mild start to our wednesday morning. wednesday on the whole will be dry, with some sunshine for many of us to begin with. we will see a few showers developing as we go through the day. these should be fairly light, but nevertheless it's worth bearing in mind. a little bit of patchy, cloudy drizzle to the north—west of the great glen here, but temperatures will respond on the whole on wednesday. we're likely to see highest values of 21 degrees in scotland and 2a, perhaps, this time in the south—east. and again, that is 75 fahrenheit. and we haven't seen 75 fahrenheit thisjuly. so let's take a look at what to expect as we head into the weekend. the high pressure will gradually ease away and weather fronts will then return, bringing wetter weather. so, make the most of this brief warm spell. we could see temperatures peaking at 27 on friday. cooler, wetter conditions return for the weekend.

with all the latest from the fallout of the attempted assassination on donald trump, which happened on saturday. and i will never forget the moment i woke up on sunday morning to that news, having had an early night. and then, of course, the us political calendarjust rolls on as planned. the republicans are meeting for their convention in milwaukee, in wisconsin, which is one of the swing states. and so that's about to get under way, even after all the events of what's happened in the last few days, and there for the bbc is bbc world's chief anchor, sumi somaskanda! hi, sumi! hi, adam, how are you? very well, thank you. and alsojoining us is host of americast and a little radio programme called the today programme, justin webb. hi, justin. hi there! so, sumi, i mean, just give us... i mean, there's so much we could catch up on, but give us some of the sort of major developments on the timeline since we last did an episode of newscast on sunday. so much, as you said, has happened. so there was the assassination

attempt on donald trump at that rally in pennsylvania. all of the questions that have been asked about how this could happen, congress has called for an inquiry. they're holding briefings, looking into what happened with secret service and their plan for that rally. we've seen the president, joe biden, hold remarks. he said that he's launching an independent investigation into what happened. he also said that those results will be revealed to the public. he made a call for unity in an address to the nation as well, where he said, "look, we may have our differences, but we have to settle those in a civil and peaceful manner." he said that he called donald trump after the shooting. he managed to reach him on saturday and had a short phone call with him. we know that the president's — the first lady, rather — jill biden, also spoke to donald trump's wife, melania trump, briefly on sunday. all of this flurry of activity, of course, after the nation really has just been in shock after that assassination attempt. and then we saw donald trump saying, "look, i'm not going to a shooter or assassin stop me from going forward with my plan,
11:28 pm
so i'm heading to milwaukee." so he arrived here in milwaukee on sunday evening. he stepped off the plane, there were hundreds of his supporters there to greet him, and he has now said that he plans to go ahead with his programme here at the republican national convention. and now we're hearing this morning two huge pieces of news — first of all, that a judge has thrown out the criminal case against donald trump for mishandling classified documents. you know, adam, many people will remember some of those images that, you know, went around the world of classified documents that were being stored at donald trump's residence in florida, in a bathroom, in the ballroom. well, the special counsel, jack smith, brought a criminal case against donald trump for that. and thejudge here, aileen cannon, said essentially that that special counsel, that his role violated the constitution, that he didn't have the authority to bring that case, so that is a huge piece of news. we saw donald trump reacting to that already, saying, "that is great news and all other cases against me should be
11:29 pm
thrown out as well." and we are now expecting donald trump to announce his nominee for vice president. it was rumoured that that could happen on monday, the first day of the convention. and our news partner here, cbs news, is also said that he's expected to make that announcement in the afternoon. and we could possibly see donald trump here at the convention centre — it's been filling in slowly, with delegates arriving — but it is rumoured that he will arrive here this afternoon and perhaps might speak as well, ever so briefly, we believe, because he's expected to sleep — to speak, rather — later in the week as well. but that is what we're hearing today, and so much has been happening, adam. sumi, that was an excellent summary of an avalanche of news. and that is why you're the chief anchor for the bbc world news channel. let's zoom in on some of those things. and i should say that we're recording this episode of newscast at 5.31ipm on monday evening. so while you were listening to this, actually, some of those things may have developed even a bit further. justin, just, first question to you. are we learning any more about how this could have happened?
11:30 pm
i mean, you don't need to know anything about american politics to know that the bubble of security around the american president is the tightest security you could imagine. yeah, and it's notjust security on the day. that's the other thing that i rememberfrom my time in the states and actually watching presidential tours around the world as well. i mean, i followed george w bush once, of all places, to sedgefield, to tony blair's old constituency, and you land there in air force one at the nearby airport and they ferry you in a helicopter, in a blackhawk helicopter, to the then prime minister's house — because they don't think the roads are safe, because they haven't been able to scan them. and they brought their own fuel as well, i remember, for the blackhawks because they didn't trust british air fuel. so there is a huge amount of effort, "no expense spared" effort, that goes into the secret service's work in normal times. the allegation now is that that effort didn't go into this.
