hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm marc edwards. here's what we've got coming up on our show. "time for change and a new chapter" — gareth southgate*s words as he decides to end his tenure as england manager. mbappe madridista — the global superstar finally presented as a real madrid player at a packed—out bernabeu. and battle of the big names, as rafa nadal beats bjorn borg's son leo in bastad in nadal*s first singles match since the french open. hello and thanks for joining us on sportsday. there's only one place to start, and england manager gareth southgate has decided to step down from his role

two days after his side's defeat to spain in the 2024 european championship final. southgate took the job on a permanent basis in november 2016 and managed his country for 102 games over almost eight years — in that time, he guided england to a world cup semifinal and two european championship finals. he's the only manager bar sir alf ramsey to lead the england men's team into a major tournament final. so with southgate now gone, who could be set to replace him? former chief football writer for the times, henry winter, gave us his assessment on the potential candidates. the football association first has to choose about whether they want to go home—grown, english, or whether they really just want the person who they see is the best, to look beyond the passport. is the best and look beyond the passport. being realistic, if they're going for the latter, pochettino, who has worked

with young players at southampton and tottenham, very popular with the players and with the media, he would be an obvious choice. i hear about pep guardiola and jurgen klopp. i think that would great, but i'd be amazed if they actually considered it. of the english candidates, for me, the best individual is eddie howe because of his experience. but there are other contenders. lee carsley with his work with the u21s. irish international, birmingham born. i imagine if they take a little bit of time to get the right person, carsley will be asked to do the interim and his first game will be in dublin. so that will be an interesting reaction. obviously, graham potter, he would absolutely be in contention. as you can imagine, lots of reaction across social media to this story on tuesday. a number of current england stars paying tribute to southgate, including his captain harry kane, who said.... jane dougall rounds up more of the reactions for us.
12:48 am
on a human level, people have a great deal of respect for gareth southgate for the way that he's conducted himself whilst in this position, and that's been reflected on social media. let's start at the very top. prince william has tweeted. he said... and that sentiment has been echoed by some of the players, including england goalkeeper jordan pickford. he said... former england player and bbc match of the day presenter gary lineker —

who, remember, was very openly critical of southgate's tactics during the tournament — has said... and the prime minister, keir starmer, has said... and don't forget, while he has led england, gareth southgate has seen six prime ministers in 10 downing street. he really has been something of a figurehead for the fa and they will miss him. to the women's game now. and the holders england will defend their european crown in switzerland next year after securing automatic qualification following a draw with sweden on tuesday. only the top two teams from their qualification group booked their spot at euro 2025,

while the other two nations dropped into the play—offs. wales, scotland and northern ireland are also in the play—offs, with the draw taking place on friday. elsewhere, the republic of ireland ended a run of six straight defeats with an impressive 3—1 victory over france in cork and germany topped their group after beating austria. kylian mbappe says that his childhood dream ofjoining real madrid has come true as he was finally presented to a packed bernabeu as a real player. the france forward signed a five—year deal at the club injuly, and speaking to a crowd of over 80,000 spectators, mbappe simply delighted to finally be a madridista. translation: this day is i incredible for me, incredible. this has been my dream ever since i was a kid, and being here today means so much to me. thanks also to
12:51 am
the real madrid fans for their affection and love. thank you all for being here today. now i have another dream — to be up for the task for the club of my life, the best club in the world. i will give my life for this club and this badge. so an incredible welcome, with 80,000 supporters reportedly in the ground. it looked absolutely packed in the spanish capital, to be fair. mbappe will fill the number 9 shirt at real, who are the la liga and champions league holders. spanish football journalist semra hunter told my colleague gavin ramjaun earlier what sort of reception he can expect when he plays his first game. i imagine we'll see a very similar reaction to the one that we saw today, a packed santiago bernabeu. we're talking about 75—80,000 fans who turned up to witness kylian mbappe finally pulling on a real madrid shirt and kissing the badge, as has been long awaited — for least seven years now, if not longer.
12:52 am
of course, for kylian mbappe, his whole bedroom was completely decked out with photos and posters of cristiano ronaldo and real madrid and superstars at the club, it had always been his dream to play, and i think it's been the dream for many madridistas for him to come and play for the club. so i suspect that once the season gets rolling and we see him in action, he's going to have so much love and support from those, the santiago bernabeu faithful. and it's another superstar arriving in real madrid. they've been so successful over the last season, haven't they? is there any worry that he might perhaps disrupt any harmony, with a huge name coming in like this? i tell you what — there is a little bit of concern. i think people are acutely aware of the ego that he has and has had at psg, based on what former french football players or french journalists will tell you, who will have the inside track. they understand what his attitude has been like at the club, or even
12:53 am
with the french national team, and the fact that he has posed quite a few issues and disruption amongst dressing rooms and team—mates alike. so, i think as long as he comes into the side likejude bellingham did last season, because there was also a little bit of concern there too, given that many of the players at borussia dortmund were quite happy to see the back of him when he left the club, the fact that he came in and he decided to eat a slice of humble pie and say, "right, i'm here to actually learn," he did take a leadership role on relatively quickly, he did win over the fans very fast, and also his team—mates too. so i think that if kylian mbappe comes in with that kind of approach of being just more humble and understanding that he needs the club more than the club needs him, which was not the case at psg, where he really was the focal point of that club and he had so much power and control, that's not going to be the case at real madrid. this is the team that has won the champions league six out of the last ten years, they won la liga and the champions league last season, they are completely decked when it comes to strength

in depth and have plenty of attacking power too, so he is coming into an already very successful side, so he'd be very smart to make sure that he keeps his ego at bay and that he does his best to fit in, not just with his new team—mates but with the madridistas, the fans, as well. golf's final major of the year gets under way on thursday at royal troon in scotland. and tiger woods has responded to criticism from colin montgomery, suggesting his best days are behind him and that he should retire. the is—time major champion woods, who's won the open three times, has struggled with form and fitness in recent times but says he'll play as long as feels he can win. as a past champion, i'm exempt until i'm 60. colin's not. he's not a past champion, so he's not exempt. so he doesn't get that opportunity to make that decision. i do. you've earned that... so, when i get to his age, i'll make that decision, but he doesn't. tennis now, and rafael nadal is through to the last 16

of the atp swedish open after beating bjorn borg's son leo in straight sets. the spaniard cruised to victory inside just 84 minutes and will take on cameron norrie next. nadal is working towards being fit for the olympics in paris next week. the tennis starting next saturday. that is all the time we've got left now, sadly. you can get all the latest sports news on the bbc sport app or on the website. but from me, marc edwards, and the rest of the team, bye—bye. hello. well, it looks like we're

in for a break from the heavy rain, the cooler weather. and in its place, something warmer is heading our way. in fact, it'll turn quite hot for some of us briefly towards the end of the week, maybe into the weekend as well. i want to show you the big picture. here in blue, colour—coded, is the jet stream, and you can see it sort of curving northwards, and that opens up the doors for the hot air to stream in from the southern climes. but that's still to reach us. this is what it looks like right now. it's relatively quiet on the weather front. plenty of clear weather through the early hours, a bit of mist and fog here and there, but that's pretty much it. and early morning temperatures, about 12 to 14 degrees at about 7am. so the forecast, then, for wednesday shows a weak ridge of high pressure over the uk, but not too far away, there's a weather front. that's going to brush ireland and maybe western parts of scotland, so at times cloudier here. and also inland, we'll see clouds bubbling up, those cumulus clouds. some of them will turn into showers, so there
12:57 am
is a chance of catching a shower on wednesday. but the vast majority of us should have a dry day. 2a in london, about 21 expected in the lowlands of scotland. really, a fine day for some of us. you'd call it a perfect summer's day. now, thursday, this weather front approaches western parts of the uk, so admittedly cloudier with some spits and spots of rain here. further east, it'll be sunny and turning really quite warm by thursday — 27 in london. we're approaching the low or mid 20s across northern england too, and then by the time we get to friday, very little in the way of wind. the air*s coming in from the south. the weather's been dominated by this high pressure here, although in the north—west, we are being brushed by a weather system, so perhaps some cloud and rain here. no heat wave on offer for north—western parts of the uk, but a brief dose of heat. let's call it a hot spell, not a heat wave, on the way for parts of england. in fact, in the south—east... well, 29 is the forecast
