12:45 am
hello, welcome along to sportsday. i'm paul scott at the bbc sports centre. and here is what we've got coming up for you. a day to remember for daniel brown, as the englishman leads the way after the first round of the open at royal troon. however, a day to forget for rory mcilroy, with the northern irishman 13 shots off the pace and in danger of missing the cut. while with the paris olympics a little over a week away, security takes centre stage for organisers. hello there, welcome along to the programme. let's start with golf. englishman daniel brown
12:46 am
is the sole overnight leader after the first round of the open at royal troon. he shot an almost faultless 65 to finish a shot clear of 2019 winner shane lowry, while rory mcilroy and tiger woods had rounds to forget. olly foster watched the day unfold. we've had some pretty wild weather here on the west coast of scotland for day one of the open championship, and that seemed to really catch a lot of the players out — not so much the heavy rain but the shifting winds. shane lowry, though, the 2019 open champion, he coped really well. he went around in 5—under. he thought he was going to be the overnight leader. but nobody spotted england's dan brown. out of the gloom, as darkness fell here at troon, this vision in white. the 29—year—old, playing in his first major, he was flawless as well. a beautiful approach on the 18th, then the birdie. 6—under — he leads the open. obviously it feels great, but i'm trying to keep my feet on the ground a little bit.
12:47 am
we've only played one round of the tournament, there still another three rounds left, so there's a long way to go. but, yeah, obviously delighted with the score. only 17 players went around under parfor theirfirst rounds, butjustin thomas, justin rose and schauffele, adam scott, they're all very well—placed going into the second round. but there will be some star players who won't be here, almost certainly, at the weekend. tigerwoods, playing here at royal troon for the first time in 20 years, well, he just couldn't raise his game to the level required. he is on 8—over par. bryson dechambeau, the us open champion, 5—over par. and rory mcilroy, itjust looks like this ten—year wait for a major win, that will go on. he lost his way, a bogey on the very first, and he struggled throughout — stuck in bunkers, going out of bounds. he is on 7—over par. i was actually surprised how difficult i felt
12:48 am
like the back nine played. i thought we were going to get it a little bit easier than we did, but, yeah, look, the course was playing tough, the conditions are very difficult, in a wind we haven't seen so far this week. just one of those days where ijust didn't adapt well enough to the conditions. so, a really difficult day for rory mcilroy. that was his worst round in a major for five years. the much better news for everyone going into the second round is that better weather is forecast. so, daniel brown will look to build on his impressive opening round when he gets under wayjust after 11am local time on friday, with second—placed lowry out around 90 minutes before him. rory mcilroy is among the later starters and will be hoping for better fortunes on day two. england's search for a new manager will continue over the coming days, with a new name being linked to the vacant role. tottenham boss ange postecoglou says he has "no idea"
12:49 am
about the reports linking him with thejob, as he'd been preparing spurs for a preseason game. one of the favourites to take over is graham potter, who admits he's ready to return to management more than a year after being sacked by chelsea. potter received an honorary doctorate at leeds beckett university on thursday and refused to be drawn on the speculation. i don't think today's the day to speak about that. i think gareth has done a fantasticjob. i don't think there's anybody in the country that is more respected in football than gareth. i think him and his team led the country and led the team in a really, really good way, and i have a huge respect for him. and i think today's the day to wish him a nice break, because he's earned that, and then to wish him well in whatever he does in the next part of his career. staying with football... manchester united have announced the signing of teenage defender leny yoro —

subject to registration — from lille, for an initialfee of £52 million, plus add—ons. the 18—year—old has signed a contract until 2029. united have also confirmed the departure of mason greenwood, who'sjoined marseille until 2029, in a deal worth up to £26.6 million. greenwood was a product of united's academy but has not played for the premier league club since january 2022 and was on loan at getafe last season. serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in february 2023. celtic have signed denmark captain kasper schmeichel on a one—year deal after the goalkeeper led his country to the last 16 of euro 202a. schmeichel was a free agent after leaving belgian club anderlecht at the end of last season and replaces former manchester city club—mate joe hart, who has retired. the dane has amassed 105 international caps and will join his new team—mates in the united states, where the scottish champions are on tour. kevin magnussen has been dropped by haas
12:51 am
for the 2025 formula 1 season, ending his second spell with the american team. haas haven't announced who'll replace the dane to become team—mate of britain's oliver bearman next season. with the current campaign hitting the halfway mark in hungary this weekend, magnussen is optimistic there's time for him to find another team for 2025. from four wheels to two... tadej pogacar has retained his overall lead of more than three minutes with just three stages to go at the tour de france. but stage 18 belonged to an emotional victor campenarts. moments after claiming the biggest win of his career, the belgian dedicated his win to his partner and celebrated with a video call back home to said partner and his month—old baby. rafael nadal is through to the quarterfinals at the swedish open, after beating britain's cameron norrie in straight sets. but nadal had to work for it. he came back from 4—1 down in the second set to win 6—4, 6—4 as he prepares for the paris olympics —
12:52 am
the men's singles there start in nine days* time. nadal will face mariano navone in the next round. talking of those olympics... security preparations ahead of the paris olympics are continuing as the start of the games draws ever closer. the opening ceremony is due to take place on the river seine, which provides additional security challenges for authorities. as a result, organisers have erected kilometres of metal fencing, with access to certain areas of the city denied to those without the necessary qr code. lots of security, but absolutely zero street crime. so, like, that's one thing that you hear about when you first try and book here and it has not been a problem at all. but, yeah, the security's been overwhelming — not in a bad way but in a good way. has not been an issue for us at all to get around. they're definitely prepared for the olympics. when dorsa yavaryvafa arrived in the uk in 2019,
12:53 am
a place at these games appeared a distant dream. she was a promising young badminton player in her home country of iran, but then searching for sanctuary became the priority. five years on from her forced relocation, dorsa will be part of the ioc*s refugee olympic team. i am dorsa yavarivafa. i am from iran and i am part of the refugee olympic team. i came in the uk about four years ago. the reason i left iran is because of my mum's problems and issues in iran. and because of that, we had to leave because it was unsafe for us. it felt awful because i had to leave my family, my friends, my badminton team, and technically everyone i knew, to start a new life. i did not speak any english. i learned english by myself in the uk by watching netflix. actually, i started playing badminton when i was ten.
12:54 am
i immediately fell in love with it. it's the great community, great people that you meet from all over the world, and it's just such a great sport to bring people together. it was... my dad introduced me to badminton. my dad wasn't allowed to watch me play in iran, as it's a rule in iran to not allow men to watch women play. when my dad watched me play for the first time in 19 years and after the game, we started hugging each other, he said, "i'm really proud of you," and that made me feel amazing. olympics was always my goal to play always and now achieving it is just such an unreal opportunity and i'm like, i still don't believe it. i'm so excited to see the eiffel tower. i'm just excited for everything. i think my story will say that no refugee is alone live from the walkie, this is

this very moment the conversations are between the president and his inner circle, but as my colleagues have reported, dusting biden is more open to the idea that, and the reason why he has heard not just from the former house speaker nancy pelosi but also from the current house minardi leader hakeem jeffries as well as majority, senate majority leader chuck schumer, all of them telling him that if he stays atop the ticket, that could affect their chances of keeping the senate, potentially flipping the house back to democratic hands, in the long run, and what i have been hearing for blessing particular is that this week of the house is that this week of the house is not in session, many members are back home, including policy, but she has been talking to her california delegation and telling them that she has got the sense that it is possible biden made
