10:00 am
breaking bbc news is start with the breaking news of major problems with computer systems around the world that have caused severe global it outages, disrupting businesses and government services. planes have been grounded, train services delayed, tv channels have gone off the air. banks, supermarket chains, mobile phone operators and also hospitals and health services have also been hit. microsoft says it is investigating theissue microsoft says it is investigating the issue which appears to be linked to the global cybersecurity firm crowdstrike. microsoft says it is taking what it is calling mitigating actions. the full of the problem still isn't clear. it is developing as we continue to bring you the news of this global it outage. let's cross back to the reporter nick marsh in singapore because nick, this all began in australia where we first had reports of problems
10:01 am
happening. a date and as you pointed out earlier quite logically because australia is one of the first parts of the world to wake up so the first reports naturally would come from there. we reports naturally would come from there. ~ ., ,., , ., there. we were hearing reports of all kinds of _ there. we were hearing reports of all kinds of companies, _ there. we were hearing reports of all kinds of companies, banks, - all kinds of companies, banks, supermarket checkouts, telecoms networks all having problems. that blue screen of death that we have been hearing so much about the last couple of hours popping up everywhere, disruption at sydney airport, melbourne airport as well. initially, here in singapore we are just a couple of hours behind we thought it was a localised issue, something that was happening in australia but then slowly but surely more and more reports seem to be reported in different parts of the world. here in singapore we know there has been disruption at the airport, one of the biggest in asia, and the biggest in the world. flights there do seem to have by and large be departing on schedule but there is some disruption when it comes to checking in. they have had
10:02 am
to move some airlines there to manual check—in, so physically writing out your gate and seat number on a boarding pass stop a few lines are starting to grow, a bit of frustration. it doesn't seem to be on the scale though that we have seen at delhi airport for example, i was just looking at the pictures that you were showing a second ago. for now it doesn't seem to be on that scale but businesses here, organisations being affected in much the same way that they are all around the world. i was telling you earlier about an advertising hoarding outside our bureau here completely blue. so it doesn't seem that anything is spared, if indeed it is linked to this and i think we can say that now with a certain degree of confidence of ground strike software which seem to be at the heart of this global outage. nick, literally while you are speaking we have had a statement from the australian prime minister anthony albanese e. let me just really what he said. i understand
10:03 am
are concerned about the outage that is happening globally and affecting a wide range of services. my government is working closely with the national cybersecurity coordinator. there is no impact to critical infrastructure, government services or 000 services. the national coordination mechanism has been activated and is meeting now. this will be happening with governments around the world won't, nick, where there will be checking to ensure there is none of that critical affected by this.- critical affected by this. yeah, absolutely- — critical affected by this. yeah, absolutely. i— critical affected by this. yeah, absolutely. i think _ critical affected by this. yeah, absolutely. i think with - critical affected by this. yeah, - absolutely. i think with something like critical infrastructure, every time that we get confirmation that it hasn't been affected and it is operating normally i guess you just have to be grateful for that because it really depends doesn't it whether a system being affected is firstly using a microsoft operating system and then whether it is reliant on
10:04 am
this corrupted update from crowdstrike falcon software. when that isn't the case and a system is operating smoothly then that is just something to be happy about and that is when it comes down to things like planes or health care systems. in those situations governments all around the world, policymakers will just beat thanking their lucky stars quite frankly. that doesn't mean that there isn't a huge amount of disruption. and don't forget, in the united states on the east coast they are just starting to wake up now it is about five o'clock, 2am on the west coast and i'm sure we will see a ream of issues of the united states and that western hemisphere starts to really wake up, turn its computers on and get going with their day. computers on and get going with theirda . , , computers on and get going with theirda. , ~' ., their day. absolutely. nick, i know ou will their day. absolutely. nick, i know you will keep _ their day. absolutely. nick, i know you will keep monitoring _ their day. absolutely. nick, i know you will keep monitoring the - you will keep monitoring the situation. thank you for the moment. i want to bring you a line that we are getting from the united arab emirates. the foreign ministry there saying that the global technical issue has affected all its electronic systems. that from the
10:05 am
foreign ministry in the united arab emirates. also we have been talking about health services, the pharmacy association here in the uk says that it is causing problems accessing prescriptions from gps and medicines delivered. so of course a lot of people have electronic prescriptions now. you can order your repeat prescription on an app or indeed the actual gp surgery will electronically send the prescription to the pharmacy where you go and then you can collect it. so the pharmacy association 0n then you can collect it. so the pharmacy association on the mac here in the united kingdom saying that enables them to access those fancy details is having problems and they are urging people if they are visiting to pick up a prescription to be patient because it is going to take longer to do that. hospitals also around the world are experiencing problems, including in israel. let's go live to our middle east correspondent lucy williamson
10:06 am
who is outside a medical centrejust outside tel aviv. lucy, update us on the latest from where you are in israel. . * , ., , israel. that's right, here at this hosital israel. that's right, here at this hospital they — israel. that's right, here at this hospital they are _ israel. that's right, here at this hospital they are working - israel. that's right, here at this hospital they are working to - israel. that's right, here at this hospital they are working to fix| israel. that's right, here at this . hospital they are working to fix the problem. it is one of about 15 problems here —— matt 15 hospitals here in his row with the problem that has been affected. the ministry of health is very keen to point out that the medical treatment of patients is not been affected, then switch to manual systems but obviously there is a real sense of urgency. this is where this problem is being felt most in israel. although it is very widely used here we are also hearing from pharmacies, you were talking about the mayor, some problems here with pharmacies. the system we believe is also used ljy the system we believe is also used by the postal service, some retailers say they are having problems. we are going into a holiday here, so it may also be that problems emerge over the coming
10:07 am
days... they are working to fix it. one hospital already says they have 0ne hospital already says they have got their systems back online, others are hopeful they will do in the future too. find others are hopeful they will do in the future too.— others are hopeful they will do in the future too. and we were saying here in the — the future too. and we were saying here in the uk _ the future too. and we were saying here in the uk people _ the future too. and we were saying here in the uk people taken - the future too. and we were saying here in the uk people taken in - here in the uk people taken in electronic prescriptions having issues. this is one way maybe more details become clear over the next few hours, lucy. details become clear over the next few hours. lucy-— details become clear over the next few hours, lucy. yeah, we have got the first report _ few hours, lucy. yeah, we have got the first report of _ few hours, lucy. yeah, we have got the first report of problems - few hours, lucy. yeah, we have got the first report of problems with - the first report of problems with pharmacies just trickling in the first report of problems with pharmaciesjust trickling in here now and i say also retailers, problems with credit cards. people are having issues paying with those today. one thing that doesn't seem today. one thing that doesn't seem to have been so badly affected is the airport. there are no reported problems at the airport here, except for the sort of knock—on issues of other airports seeing issues. so arrivals and departures are being delayed because of that but no reported problems at the airport here at the moment. {lilla reported problems at the airport here at the moment.— reported problems at the airport here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know ou will here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know you will keep — here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know you will keep us _ here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know you will keep us updated _ here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know you will keep us updated with - here at the moment. 0k, lucy, i know you will keep us updated with the - you will keep us updated with the latest there from israel. if you are just joining latest there from israel. if you are justjoining us, a reminder of the
10:08 am
breaking news. there is a major global it issue. it is linked, we think, to microsoft and also another piece of software provided by a company called crowdstrike. now, our correspondence around the world are trying to get the latest on the effect that is happening but we do know that airlines and airports have been affected. let me take you to the live pictures from delhi airport. now, we know that there are checking issues there and queues are building because they're having to do everything manually. 0ur correspondence samir hussein, who was going to check in at the airport says they were given blank boarding cards and asked to fill in the information manually. the baggage tags were then printed blank and filled in manually. they say that once i got through security there was a whiteboard by the gate and people were writing by hand the
10:09 am
flight number and also the gate number and that they are having as you can imagine quite an issue getting people checked in to board the planes. we arejust getting people checked in to board the planes. we are just saying a line from dubai airport saying that they are back operating normally following that issue. so it is a different picture around the world. we heard earlier that american airlines, that is the biggest globally in terms of passenger numbers had grounded all of its planes because of this it issue. we're just getting a line from easyjet, which is one of the biggest operators in europe. it says that its systems have not been directly affected by the microsoft issue. however, we are aware that some airport systems have been impacted europe and that has led to delays to
10:10 am
their flights this morning. europe and that has led to delays to theirflights this morning. they europe and that has led to delays to their flights this morning. they say that they can expect some further potential impact to flights with customers expecting longer than usual airport queues. and they are advising customers travelling from spanish airports to arrive there three hours before theirflights. so that the latest from easyjet. where there have been province. this is madrid airport, so easyjet say that any passengers heading to spanish airports, including madrid, should arrive three hours before the flight. just also seeing lines coming in all the time as this problem grows. just seeing a line on the reuters news agency that tyres spirit airlines, which is one of the airlines in america has issued what it calls a ground stop due to commune occasions issues. so it is stopping any of its flights taking off. that is coming in from the faa,
10:11 am
the federal air administration there. they are saying that spirit airlines has issued what they call a ground stop due to communication issuesis ground stop due to communication issues is what they're putting that down too. let us head back to india because i was mentioning that our correspondence samir hussein is in delhi at the airport where we can see these live pictures from outside. and has had trouble. just take us through what your process of checking in was at the airport today. 50 checking in was at the airport toda . checking in was at the airport toda _ ., checking in was at the airport toda . ., , ., today. so we have been at the airort today. so we have been at the airport for— today. so we have been at the airport for a — today. so we have been at the airport for a little _ today. so we have been at the airport for a little over - today. so we have been at the airport for a little over two - today. so we have been at the i airport for a little over two hours and once we arrived, travelling on vacation with my family, were a team of seven can myself. we arrived and it was quite a chaotic scene at the airport. it wasn't very clear what was happening. when we finally managed to get an understanding that the systems were down, our understanding at that point was just only located towards this one particular domestic carrier in
10:12 am
india, indigo. we didn't realise at that point it was a global outage to the scale that we are seeing. we were in these very long queues, lots of chaos, people jostling trying to get information. then we were handed blank boarding cards and we were meant to fill out our information onto these boarding cards. so you would write your name, if you are already assigned a seat number you are meant to write down your seat number because you couldn't even print boarding passes even if you have them. and they weren't accepting anything on phones because nothing could be scanned. and so you wrote down all of your information manually. when we finally got to an agent, they then assign you a zone in which you are going to be able to board. and then they give you your baggage tags and they are also black. see you are manually entering your baggage tags. and then sticking it onto your suitcases. so it is anyone's guess whether or not i am
10:13 am
going to get to my final destination with any of our things. but once you got through that part, but initial sort of getting your ticket, going through security was remarkably smooth. they had people queueing up, they were managing the lines and managing how many people were going through at one time. and now i'm standing at the gate and my flight was meant to take off about 30 minutes ago. and we are just waiting for people to manually enter in passengers information before they start boarding the plane. time looking out of the gate and we see that the plane is here, the pilot is actually been here for the last half an hour. you see him in front of me speaking on the phone. and speak of pilots, i spoke with another pilot who is flying to another city and i asked, this isjust a remarkable situation, what do you think? and her answer was remarkable in that
10:14 am
she said, well, look, what are we going to do? we can't use the machines so we are going to have to enter everything manually. yes, it is going to be a lot slower but things are still happening. 0f things are still happening. of course i asked quite selfishly whether it is still safe to fly, to which she said of course. the flight systems here have nothing to do with the outages. that shouldn't be an issue. she said really it has to do with passenger information, registering that people are getting onto the right planes and that they have the correct boarding passes and all the information.— all the information. yeah, “ust listeninu all the information. yeah, “ust listening mi all the information. yeah, “ust listening to you i all the information. yeah, “ust listening to you samira h all the information. yeah, justl listening to you samira hussain all the information. yeah, just - listening to you samira hussain you mention so many of us now have airline tickets on a phone, on a map and you can't actually read that. i saw a picture that they are having to write the departures on a whiteboard there.— to write the departures on a whiteboard there. , ., . ., whiteboard there. yes, once we had crossed through _ whiteboard there. yes, once we had crossed through security _ whiteboard there. yes, once we had crossed through security my - whiteboard there. yes, once we had crossed through security my family. crossed through security my family and i were trying to figure out
10:15 am
where our flight was specially taken from. we went a couple of times to the security agent to try and find out when that flight was taken off and he finally got the information, was able to tell us which gate to go to. but they are manually entering all the formation onto a whiteboard. you have to sort of step back and find the comedy in some of what is happening as people trying really hard to make things work and get people in and out of two cities or get them on their way. remember, this is an international airport that serves delhi and it has not closed. so they are making every effort to still try and get passengers in and out. so they are manually entering gate information onto this whiteboard and people keep touching the whiteboard and accidentally erasing the gay information! so the gentleman who is information! so the gentleman who is in charge of that is having to —— a
10:16 am
raising of the information. it is actually remarkable. i think everybody here is taking it in stride. there is no yelling, no expirations of exasperation. people are just recognising that this is a situation that we are in and things will take a lot longer, there is probably a lot less queueing than they normally would be, and this is a country that doesn't often queue to begin with, but there is a little bit of using of elbows to muscle the way into where you need to go, but other than that, people are pretty then about it. it speaks to the temperament of the people here that, yes, sometimes things don't work and sometimes you have to improvise and this is an airport that is absolutely functioning and it is
10:17 am
getting people in and out of the city, albeit with many delays. so mira, ourfingers are city, albeit with many delays. so mira, our fingers are crossed that you will finally get to take off and it's not too much longer. thank you very much forjoining us there from delhi airport. you can see the pictures there from mumbai airport there. airports around the world are being affected. let me give you some updates that have come in while we were speaking then. we have that information from a spokeswoman from the los angeles airport, they have told the bbc that they are seeing some of the airlines affected, some flights are taking off and landing, but they don't appear to be any problems at the moment with the it infrastructure at lax, which is of course one of the us biggest airline airport. there are issues with taking off and landing, but not with their it system. dubai is back
10:18 am
functioning normally after re—initialising their check—in process for some airlines and chinese state media are saying that flights at beijing airport are unaffected by the global it outage. we are of course looking and checking our sources and my colleague in the business unit has just been speaking to a company that monitors flights, called civilian and they are saying that over 1000 flights have been cancelled globally so far today and of course, the issue here in the uk is it is set to be one of their busiest days at the airports of the schools have broken up airports of the schools have broken up and a lot of people will be heading ourfunfamily up and a lot of people will be heading our fun family holiday today, heading for the airports, to get flights and there will be problems there. for the moment, they are saying over 1000 flights have
10:19 am
been cancelled globally. this weekend, across the uk, over 9000 expected to be taking off, we will check. we also hearing from ryanair, another of the airlines and they say that they are currently experiencing disruption across the network. they are saying this is again because of the global third—party it outage. this is all being linked back to the crowdstrike falcon software that we were talking about earlier. they say it is entirely out of their control, but booking and check—in are currently unavailable. they say if you are due to travel today and have yet to check in for your flight, they say you can do that at the airport, but at the moment, ryanair are saying that booking and check—in on their website is currently unavailable. as i said, we are getting information coming in all of the time. on the airlines and indeed the time. on the airlines and indeed the other industries that have been affected. don't forget, we have a
10:20 am
live page up and running on the bbc news website and application, which is the latest information from a team of correspondence around the world giving you the latest and updating you on this major global it failure which has been linked both to this crowdstrike falcon software. both companies, microsoft included are saying they are working on it and trying to mitigate the impact. let's get more on what we think might happen. 0ur tech expertjoins us on the line. damn, thank you for your time on bbc news. as far as you can make out, what do you think this happen? i can make out, what do you think this ha en? ., ~' can make out, what do you think this ha . en? ., 4' ., can make out, what do you think this ha en? ., 4' ., can make out, what do you think this hauen? ., ~ ., , , happen? i would like to say, this is likel to happen? i would like to say, this is likely to rrot _ happen? i would like to say, this is likely to not malicious _ happen? i would like to say, this is likely to not malicious and - happen? i would like to say, this is likely to not malicious and almost. likely to not malicious and almost don't quote me on that, the idea that it don't quote me on that, the idea thatitis don't quote me on that, the idea that it is a cyber attack and it might be a well—planned one and people would know that it would cause a huge amount of disruption if
10:21 am
they did it now, but i think it is more likely to be a human being, a team of people trying to rush an update before they went on holiday ironically enough. it is likely that they did not realise that crowdstrike would have issues. that is because problem with microsoft cloud platform and because microsoft is such a huge company with global monopoly, it means it touches pretty much everything. that is probably one of the bigger things. we have got to start looking at, is the idea of a centralised, don't get me wrong, this is not microsoft bashing, this isjust the idea alone that you would have one company and one point of failure that can affect so much. luckily for us all, of course, it is not completely microsoft and therefore there is competition in the market and there are other providers in the whole world is not crippled. if you're working from home and a lot of us do, globally, we are working online more and more, this kind of thing
10:22 am
happening will be costing billions of dollars. i suppose the question for us all is who pays the bill? who foots the bill? when you see this blue screen of death, is that an act of god? i don't think it is, is it? it is an act of software going under or down. who do you claim? do you claim on the insurance? those are the questions for tomorrow. absolutely, you mentioned the microsoft blue screen of death. if it is the update that has a rogue file and you have the blue screen there, how do you go about fixing it when it is in that loop of blue screen of death, can't do anything. again, i'm not into the cyber security other tax update side, you will have to talk to microsoft and ironically of course, you will have to do —— you probably can't. you
10:23 am
will have to find a fit. the idea, just like myself and team's had a problem last week, the reality is that this is down to microsoft and the company. my guess is all they will do is stop that update, roll it back to a previous update that crowdstrike are other people may have done and roll the whole system back it may sound like an oversimplification, which it most probably is, but it will all be turning it off and on again and hoping it resets the global system. it might be as simple as that. however, i wouldn't wonder, there are thousands of people and millions of hours that will be going into making sure that this is a solution that comes you really quickly. i would say right now, be patient, turn your machine off, come back to again. there is very little or nothing you can do, except as other people have found, use a different kind of computer or a different kind of operating system and this is what much bigger organisations are realising now, perhaps not everything which should not rely on one player. it will interesting to
10:24 am
see what the share price of microsoft does. of course the stock exchange is down at the moment, so we can't find out anyway. it exchange is down at the moment, so we can't find out anyway.— we can't find out anyway. it does aaain we can't find out anyway. it does again show _ we can't find out anyway. it does again show you _ we can't find out anyway. it does again show you just _ we can't find out anyway. it does again show you just how - we can't find out anyway. it does again show you just how reliant i we can't find out anyway. it does l again show you just how reliant we are now on every part of our everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think— everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think that's _ everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think that's a _ everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think that's a bad _ everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think that's a bad thing. - everyday life on computers. yes, i don't think that's a bad thing. i - don't think that's a bad thing. i don't think that's a bad thing. i don't think that's a bad thing. i don't think we should be throwing the baby out of the bath water and i don't think we should be going back to putting things on whiteboards and using pens and papers to fill out things. don't get me wrong, we have to do well the electricity is out, you have to use a candle or a torch, but let's not be bashing the idea of progress with computers. think about all the hours where there are not problems. they are much higher. it might be 99.99% at the time we have a great time at computers in add a huge amount to our lives. it's just this moment on this day. we hope it's not a whole day. i have a feeling, a gut feeling because there are clever brains behind the scenes, but it will not be a whole day. is it not amazing thatjust in a couple
10:25 am
of hours, this can happen? i love the fact of the resilience around the fact of the resilience around the globe, the human spirit that we don't rely on computers too much, that people have collaborated on done sensible stuff to keep the world going. done sensible stuff to keep the world going-— world going. absolutely. tech ex - ert, world going. absolutely. tech expert. thank— world going. absolutely. tech expert, thank you _ world going. absolutely. tech expert, thank you for - world going. absolutely. tech expert, thank you forjoining. world going. absolutely. tech i expert, thank you forjoining us world going. absolutely. tech - expert, thank you forjoining us on bbc news. as i have been saying, lots of developments coming in throughout the morning. let me bring a few more of those. we have been talking about her airlines have been impacted. singapore airlines have just issued a statement saying the service centre in singapore and a reservation hotline are experiencing technical issues. this is because of the it outage. currently, there is no impact on their flights. problems of the reservations, but 0k no impact on their flights. problems of the reservations, but ok when it comes to actual flights. just a sign of how everyday life is being affected. we have just seen at manchester united, the pangea league
10:26 am
football club says that it means that it cannot sell any tickets on this morning was supposed to be when they were going to release tickets for the new season. their website is not available. unfortunately, they say, they have had to delay the morning's ticket release and that will be postponed until at least midday. it is affecting everyday life. as we have been saying, the airline, the banks, we have had mobile phone companies who are also affected and it is around the world. let's get the picture from tokyo. let's get the picture from tokyo. let's go live to our correspondent. how is affecting you there? i’m let's go live to our correspondent. how is affecting you there? i'm “ust heafina how is affecting you there? i'm “ust hearing you — how is affecting you there? i'm “ust hearing you speaki how is affecting you there? i'm “ust hearing you speak about i how is affecting you there? i'm just hearing you speak about everyday l hearing you speak about everyday life here and we have updates from narita airport. we have been on the phone to one of our offices there, and we know that the budget airline jet starjapan has had to cancel 20 of its flights because of disruptions to the check—in systems.
10:27 am
we understand that the airline is manually checking in people at the moment. we also understand that japan airlines have experienced a glitch in the reservation management system preventing new bookings, changes or cancellations. anything to do with online bookings, changes, that has been disrupted. it also affected people to use their miles, to use domestic flights. 0ne affected people to use their miles, to use domestic flights. one thing to use domestic flights. one thing to tell you here injapan is that the school vacations have started in many families were on their way in narita airport, we have been watching them on local media, saying they were about to go to different parts of japan to start their holiday with their children and that has been disrupted. narita airport officials have told us that there are no reports of the whole airport itself been affected, but different airlines including the australian qantas, the hong kong express and thatjet qantas, the hong kong express and that jet star for qantas, the hong kong express and thatjet starforjapan, all qantas, the hong kong express and thatjet star forjapan, all of that jet star forjapan, all of
10:28 am
those thatjet star forjapan, all of those have been affected. another thing affected in osaka isjr wess, thatis thing affected in osaka isjr wess, that is the train line, japan is famous to how precise and online it's —— on time its trains are. the malfunction has affected the tracking system on the website. the app tracking system on the website. the app displaying where trains are. trains and cells are functioning, but if you're looking on the application of trying to find by your train is, especially now around rush hour, that has been affected. 0ne rush hour, that has been affected. one more thing affected and this is a tourist destination, universal studios japan, a tourist destination, universal studiosjapan, huge a tourist destination, universal studios japan, huge tourist destination, especially again around some time, we understand that this outage has affected their registers, cache years and a lot of the restaurants and shops around the management shops —— around the location have been affected and it has also affected air conditioning and with their heaps, we have heard
10:29 am
from officials in the park distributing water by hand to keep people call. another thing to add, i have been in contact with colleagues in south korea in the sole bureau, they are saying that some low—cost airlines in south korea are seeing problems. these are problems with ticketing, in line in what you have been saying. an interesting bit of information i got from one of our colleagues in seoul bureau, one of the reasons that they are not affected as much is they don't use microsoft, but rather indigenous it is systems for security reasons. we are, as we say, we are getting reports that the evening here about how this has affected people. so far, no major disruptions in terms of airports or train stations. it is
10:30 am
localised with specific airlines, but nonetheless, many people here are affected. but nonetheless, many people here are affected-— are affected. thank you very much. let me show _ are affected. thank you very much. let me show you _ are affected. thank you very much. let me show you many _ are affected. thank you very much. let me show you many pictures - are affected. thank you very much. | let me show you many pictures that we are getting in from around the world. this is mumbai airport, you can see the terminal we have heard from a number of the indian airlines and our correspondent who is in delete that they are having to do everything manually. and we are getting few up dates from the airlines, kenya airways said they are currently experiencing a system outage affecting their booking system. let me take you to berlin airport as well. berlin said that after they had had the problem that they were managing to book some people in manually and that those systems were coming back up, so that from berlin and i am just getting a line from british airways. we will
10:31 am
stay on these pitches in berlin for the moment, where
