major it outage cripples industries worldwide, grounding flights and shutting down banking and retail systems. a faulty global update by a global security firm crowdstrike appears to be the cause of the problem. theyjust said a fix is in place. it does not appear to be a security incident or a hack, but experts say that fixing the problems could take some time. hello, welcome to bbc news, we continue with the breaking news of a major problem with computer systems that have caused a severe global it outage, disrupting business and government services. planes have been grounded, train delayed and tv channels have gone off air, banks,

supermarket chains and mobile phone operations have also been hit. microsoft says it is investigating theissue microsoft says it is investigating the issue which appears to be linked to the global cybersecurity firm crowdstrike. microsoft says it is taking what it is calling mitigating actions. the full scale of this problem still isn't clear, but we have had a statement from crowd strike and we can cross over to my colleague who joins us from the newsroom with that statement from crowdstrike. just bring us up to date with exactly what they just said within the past few moments. good morning. yes, this is a truly global cyber breakdown. the effects are being felt across the world. in the last few moments, we have heard from the company crowdstrike. it seems that cyber security update is behind this problem. they said that they are actively working with

customers who have been impacted by this. this is not a security incident or a cyber attack. the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. but for lots of people across the world today, this is causing absolute carnage. the travel sector in particular has seen chaos today, overin particular has seen chaos today, over in america, a number of major airlines have had to not run flights, also in countries like india and japan. here in the uk, airports like gatwick, luton and edinburgh have also had to do things differently this morning because of this cyber breakdown. it has been causing a lot of trouble on the rails here in the uk. i have got a list in front of me of the train companies that have been affected by this. avante west coast, great western, whole train, northern, southern, tenzing, transport for wales and transpennine express have all said they have been affected by

this and have told customers they could be delays today. it is also been held in the health sector as well. hospitals and gp surgeries telling us that doctors are having to carry out previous electronic work manually instead. this gives you a sense of the truly pan— industry effect that this is having. it is being felt across the globe. health care all affected. gp surgeries in england experiencing problems and all over the world. we have got correspondence that various airports. we have got people at hospitals, correspondence all of the world as well. this is of course a global it i to glimmer outage. the

there is hackers looking at this as well. exactly that. obviously the crowdstrike statement has said that this is not a hack, not a security incident, not a cyber attack. but in a way it makes it quite worrying that this is a product update. and we always see this to people. it doesn't matter what you do around cyber security, doesn't matter what you do around cybersecurity, how doesn't matter what you do around cyber security, how much you invest in products, there is always human error at the back of something that can cause glitches like this. we will probably find out in the next weeks or months to come as to what happens, i will be on to the next lecture at that stage as well. the queue is going down. hopefully we are boarding.

yes, we thought we would be in for the long haul with this, the longer time went on without finding a fix. now the city has identified this issue and they are fixing it. so it seems like the end of the beginning of this issue, if that makes sense. hopefully for the sake of the many millions of people affected all around the world, on pretty much every competence, this will get resolved reasonably quickly. but if you speak to people who know a lot about these things, the consensus seems to be that you are going to have to do some kind of manual reboot. so even if there is a patch applied to this corrupt and software, it is a hands on keyboard situation where you have to get on each individual end point, basically computer, and restart it. ok, if you are in a small shop or something like that, that is fair enough, you can do that quickly. but that you and a massive organisation with 500 checkinis and a massive organisation with 500 check in is at an airport that is

going to take considerable amount of time. we do at the moment seem to be moving in the right direction. moving in the right direction. when crowdstrike in their statement said that mac and linux hosts are not affected, we are just talking about microsoft, but we are seeing how many parts of our lives are dictated by that, are supported by that. yes, when that does not work, the source of the problem is that to protect systems from attacks, it is software which is anti—cyber attack, when that doesn't work, because it is right at the heart of the system, everything seems to go down. because so many countries, so many organisations, banks, airports,

financial systems, supermarkets, hospitals, emergency services, you name it, you name the place, you name it, you name the place, you name the system, they seem to be using it, and if that goes down it has all these kinds of widespread effects. when the news started to come through a few hours earlier in the newsroom it was all from australia initially. this is a localised issue in australia, we thought. then it slowly but surely, as the world started to wake up, and get on with its day, we started to hear reports from here, in singapore, a newspaper website went down for a while. as you guys started to recap in the uk and europe you are getting more and more reports as people started to switch their computers on, and this blue screen of death, that we keep talking about, started popping up in every city around the world. it shows you how interconnected and reliant we are on these systems,

but, like you see, hopefully a fix now is being deployed, and could have to wait and see how long it will take to weed through all this disruption that we have already seen any matter of a few hours. when you are talking about disruption, the uk transport secretary has just issued a statement, saying, we are aware of it failures affecting several transport operators and terminals, we are working at peace across industry and governments, there are no known security issues at present. i'm referring back to what crowdstrike, their statement, this is not a security breach. but it just shows the amount of impact across so many different sectors. while we have got you in singapore, what is the transport situation like there? you are tied to the desk, obviously. but around you, what have people been seeing? right here in our newsroom, everything has been pretty can.

nothing has gone down so far. i'm able to talk to you and give you updates. outside of our bureau, and are building, one of my colleagues so an electronic advertising board which had gone completely blue and people were taking pictures of it because the news had been spreading. in our newsroom everything fine so far. but there are some organisations that have been affected. one of the biggest airports in asia, in the world actually, has had some disruption. i think it kind of depends on the airline at the terminal you go to. the budget terminals which require you to check in once you arrive, or some of the airlines require you to check in, the saw some pretty big disruption, and i have seen images and videos we are the queues have been getting bigger and bigger, staff actually writing flight numbers on white boards. but if you are in a terminal where you can check—in online, and most people who

i'm at indira gandhi international airport and i am flying on holiday from delhi to kolkata with my family, and we are absolutely affected by this global outage. and what they're doing here is manually entering everybody�*s passenger information. now, complicating issues for myself is that my children don't have seat assignments just yet, so we're trying to work that out. now, if you want to just take a look at my boarding card, you can see that all the information had to be entered in manually. the same thing for baggage tags. they were all entered in manually, so it's anyone's guess whether or not i'm actually going to get the luggage at the end of this trip. but i will say that in terms of mood, people are getting a little bit snippy now. but overall, most people are just taking this all in stride given that it is a global outage. yes, samira hussain, absolutely a global outage and we are hearing on the situation in australia and that is what is happening in delhi and we know turkish airlines have cancelled

across all the different developing lines because there are so many of them, because as sam was correctly saying, this is a global, world it outage which has caused chaos not just across the travel industry but banks, media outlets, all suffering from what has happened. the cybersecurity firm crowdstrike admitting one of its updates because this problem and it is affecting microsoft, windows devices, so mac and linux users are ok but you can see the scope of the reach of the microsoft windows customers when you see just how much disruption there is. just to add, i was describing that the consumer group which was giving practical advice for travellers, keep an eye on communications from your airline, you may be advised to arrive early at your airports, avoid checking in at your airports, avoid checking in a bag as queues are check—in will be long and it failures typically lead
