2:08 pm
happen then. we were hearing earlier about edinburgh airport stopping some flights, that is back up and running but the knock—on effect is still going on and will be going on for some time. we were hearing about berlin airport earlier being shuts. in terms of the uk, this was expected to be the busiest weekend for people going off on holiday since before the pandemic, so many people looking forward to those holidays abroad that they have been waiting for and now they are facing huge delays. in terms of what people are allowed to do if they are delayed, the airline has this duty of care to them and because this is an extraordinary event, you probably won't get a refund for your flight but they have a duty of care to get you there, so they should be getting you there, so they should be getting you there, so they should be getting you there at some point and that could be putting you on another airline, but in the meantime they should give you food vouchers, drinks vouchers, maybe even a phone data so you can keep in touch. it is
2:09 pm
important you keep your receipts for that sort of thing so you can claim it back after. and also some advice to people who had emergency medicine they take with them on holiday, put it in your hand luggage, not in the hold, because they could be issues with bags some people have been advised not to bring bags to the hold at all, just travel just to be sure with your hand luggage. in terms of the airport here at heathrow, when a major event happens, often what happens is the hotels get booked up very quickly but that has not happened yet and it seems to be several hours of delays at the moment. we are not seeing things here turning into hotel bookings just yet but it is the interconnecting flights that people are missing so this will go on and on because of those issues we are

2:11 pm
close because it has been unable to take electronic payments and says is worried about the local economy and what extent this will make it my profit margin. i havejust come back from covid in terms of my business, it is doing well now and i'm worried will have a detrimental effect on its revenue going forward. surrey nhs foundation has declared a critical incident due to the it outage saying the issue has affected its it system we use it to deliver radiotherapy this morning, so obviously radiotherapy is being used to treat cancer patients and patients being told they came out will not take place which puts pressure on those who are keen to have the treatment take their serious illness. —— treat their serious illness. —— treat their serious illness. —— treat their serious illness. in education, some teachers are struggling and they are having to adapt and do different things. we are not sure how long this impact will go on for. we know
2:12 pm
there is a solution but the backlog in the nhs has been there for years, we know the nhs is struggling and just one day of cancelled appointments will obviously put pressure on the system and exacerbate those delays. it is not clear how long the impact will go on for, but i'm being told by some people that they anticipate there is going to be a domino effect for a few days yet at least. find going to be a domino effect for a few days yet at least.— few days yet at least. and also, what is incredible _ few days yet at least. and also, what is incredible about - few days yet at least. and also, what is incredible about this - few days yet at least. and also, what is incredible about this is i few days yet at least. and also, i what is incredible about this is the fact it is impacting so many different areas of life, as you mentioned, gp surgeries, shops, banks. , . , , mentioned, gp surgeries, shops, banks. , , a mentioned, gp surgeries, shops, banks. , , banks. yes, absolutely. as you said, it is impacting _ banks. yes, absolutely. as you said, it is impacting travel, _ banks. yes, absolutely. as you said, it is impacting travel, education, - it is impacting travel, education, health. just some breaking news from around five minutes ago, the devolved department of health in belfast said around two thirds of gp practices in northern ireland have been affected by the outage, the practices are unable to access patient records, generate
2:13 pm
prescriptions or see the results of lab tests and that is very important stuff if you are a patient who once your test results and have been anticipating them and you have been told they are delayed, who knows how that would affect you. we know patients with minor illnesses are being sent to pharmacies instead of gp surgeries. one doctor said pharmacies are experiencing delays, prescriptions as the systems are down and some wholesalers are experiencing it system failures too. so you might think life hasn't been impacted, at the moment you might be thinking things are going smoothly but maybe in the next few hours and the days to come you may experience some delays. this morning in my local town the cafes were closed and i was unable to go into a cafe to get my usual coffee because they are
2:14 pm
unable to take electronic payment, so that is the micro level, if we look at a macro level you are looking at things like health care which obviously have a detrimental impact and will cause some worry to some people across the country. qm. some people across the country. 0k, aood to some people across the country. 0k, good to talk — some people across the country. ok, good to talk to you, thanks so much that update. around the world there are also issues. can we cross live to hugh schofield? we will try to go to him in paris to get the update, the olympics are starting in... a week today we will have the opening ceremony and the outages may have an impact on those. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news.

2:16 pm
more now and those global it outages. as i mentioned earlier, paris is hosting the olympics a week today and there has been impact on what is preparation for the olympics. the bbc*s hugh schofield is following events from the french capital. what has been the impact of the outage on those preparations? there has been an — outage on those preparations? there has been an impact _ outage on those preparations? there has been an impact but _ outage on those preparations? there has been an impact but it _ outage on those preparations? there has been an impact but it has - outage on those preparations? ii—ii” has been an impact but it has been limited, that is the message from the organising committee. when news broke this morning about the it cuts, people very nervous and thought it might have a devastating effect at this critical point. what it has affected mostly it seems is accreditations for journalists, other officials, distribution of uniforms apparently has been slowed down. we have a colleague he was seeking to get accreditation this morning and she could not do it
2:17 pm
because the it system was down. apart from that, the olympics committee is saying all the key work is going ahead as fine, the ticketing has not been affected, work at various sites around the centre of paris where we are now is not being affected, the olympic flame is proceeding on the last legs of its voyage around france. the only other thing that might be affected it is saying is the arrival of delegations. of course they are beginning to arrive now in france from around the world and because of problems with airlines it may be some of those are delays, but i think the short answer is the apprehensions and worries of this morning when this news first broke have not been realised, there is an impact but it has not been huge. thank you. let's return to london. the it outage has impacted banks and businesses around the world and has had an impact on the financial

are talking earlier about the travel industry, it is notjust the day—to—day operations, their share prices as well. shares in airlines such as the parent company of british airways, easyjet, ryanair, they have seen share price falls and they have seen share price falls and the reason is people are worried about how long this will go on for and the kind of disruption it may cause to the travel industry over the coming days, the crucial days, the coming days, the crucial days, the start of the big summer getaway. and insurance companies have been suffering from falling share prices because there will be able to be for this. we don't know how serious the impact will be overall, but if compensation needs to be paid, it is the insurance companies who will pick up at least part of the tap. what about crowdstrike, the company who says it's the fact hit the operating systems, what about their share price?— share price? crowdstrike, we know their share — share price? crowdstrike, we know their share price _ share price? crowdstrike, we know their share price has _ share price? crowdstrike, we know their share price has fallen - their share price has fallen dramatically at the moment. they seem to be ultimately responsible for the outage. there will certainly be reputational damage for them,
2:20 pm
whether there is financial damage, that will be sorted when we see the full impact of this outage over the coming days. full impact of this outage over the coming days-— full impact of this outage over the coming days. thank you very much indeed. reporting _ coming days. thank you very much indeed. reporting there _ coming days. thank you very much indeed. reporting there on - coming days. thank you very much indeed. reporting there on the - indeed. reporting there on the impact of the financial sector. i mentioned that the company crowdstrike, it is a cybersecurity firm and says a defect in one of its software updates hit windows operating systems. the impact of this has been so widespread and so quick and in many cases really quite worrying. we can talk about how this could happen in this way with our cyber correspondent. for those people who are not tech savvy and know what we are talking about, talk about the bare basics, how can this end up happening? it starts with crowdstrike which is a cybersecurity company, very well respected and trusted around the world, particularly by giant organisations, and that is why we have seen such a big impact and an
2:21 pm
immediate impact because of the biggest companies in the world use crowdstrike and they have a very popular piece of software called falcon which is what we call an end point protection piece of software and it is like an antivirus software you would download and have on your home computer, but there is one of those witches for big companies, and they put out they hoped was an innocuous software update overnight. —— one of those which is for big companies. it is like one of those updates you would do automatically on your computer and you don't even really notice but this one had a flaw in it, there was something wrong with the code which was sent out to all of their customers and bearin out to all of their customers and bear in mind if they have 211,000 customers around the world, that is 24,000 customers around the world, that is 211,000 medium, small, large enterprises, so that is potentially hundreds of thousands of end points of computers that received this bad software update and somehow, on
2:22 pm
windows, when the software update was downloaded to a windows computer, which most of them would have been, it broke the computer and meant you had this blue screen of death and that is what people are dealing with all over the world. it managers are now trying to get what has just been released managers are now trying to get what hasjust been released by crowdstrike, the correct antidote if you like, that piece of software, and they are trying to get that onto computers but the problem we have is that cannot be done automatically over the internet, it has to be done with a manual process in most cases, so that is physical, fingers on keyboards to try and solve the issue. ., ., ., , ., ~ issue. how long do you think it will take for the — issue. how long do you think it will take for the issues _ issue. how long do you think it will take for the issues that _ issue. how long do you think it will take for the issues that we - issue. how long do you think it will take for the issues that we have i take for the issues that we have seen to be solved, given what you are talking about on the fact this needs a physical reboot so to speak? i think it is really interesting, you would imagine the really large customers of crowdstrike who have thousands, maybe tens of thousands
2:23 pm
of computers and servers on the networks, they have been affected, you would imagine they will take a long time but what we are actually saying is the opposite, some of the companies that are bouncing back up at the largest ones, american airlines for example, you would imagine they have thousands of computers across the world, they have bounced back pretty quickly and it points to the companies that are large and have lots of computers, they are well funded and have it departments that are well resourced, so they have bounced back and are appearing to bounce back quicker than perhaps the smaller businesses or medium sized businesses that do not have that well resourced it team, they may even outsource it to a third party. where we might see the real crunch point is where you have a large company that isn't well resourced in the it side, so they have lots of computers and not enough people to fix them. good to talk to you. — enough people to fix them. good to talk to you, thank _ enough people to fix them. good to talk to you, thank you _ enough people to fix them. good to talk to you, thank you very - enough people to fix them. good to talk to you, thank you very much i talk to you, thank you very much indeed. our cyber correspondent

three days in court, so all in all it was a month and usually those cases are heard for at least six months, so the fact that evan gershkovich has been sentenced so quickly does raise speculation that a swap deal is coming. however, vladimir putin has told a number of times to different media that he is ready to send evan home, only if the case of berlin, germany, allows them to send a russian back to russia. 0k, to send a russian back to russia. ok, thank you. there's more on that on the bbc news website. you are watching bbc news. the heat and the
