10:00 pm
from his new running—mate, jd vance. let's get president trump back there, close down that border, and bring some common sense and security to this country. israeli fighterjets strike houthi military targets in yemen, in response to hundreds of attacks on israel in recent months. microsoft admits friday's tech outage affected more than eight million windows devices, and there are warnings criminals might try to exploit the chaos. hello, i'm lauren taylor. we start this hour in the united states, where the republican presidential nominee donald trump and his running mate, ohio senatorjd vance, are shortly due to hold their first rally together, as a ticket, in grand rapids, michigan. it's one week since the assassination attempt on the former president
10:01 pm
in pennsylvania, when a 20—year—old gunman opened fire injuring mr trump, and killing one person. speaking in the last half hour, trump's running mate — ohio senatorjd vance — spoke of what donald trump would do for the country if he elected in november. if he were elected in november. president trump wants to make our streets safe enough that your kids can make a mistake, without it ruining their life. he wants to make our economy strong enough so that you can maybe start a business or start anotherjob, where doing and getting a second chance is not something that only happens to the lucky or to the privileged few, but happens to everybody who works hard and plays by the rules. cheering president trump, in other words, wants to build a country that actually works for the citizens of this country once again. he did it for four years.
10:02 pm
he did it so successfully for four years. we've never... think about this, my friends. we have never had an election where you have four years of one guy and four years of the other guy. and who could possibly reject the idea that four years of president trump has been a hell of a lot better than four years ofjoe biden, right? cheering that's right. and we've got an opportunity to do it. we've got an opportunity to win a lot of races up and down the ballot, to re—establish american dominance in energy, to drill, baby, drill and kick out the drug cartels of our country. cheering man, what do they put in the water
10:03 pm
in grand rapids here?! you guys are a lot of fun. cheering but i just, i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me such a warm welcome. for giving me and president trump the opportunity to win your vote. for working so hard over the next four months, because we want an america that works for americans, and the only way to do it is to re—elect donald] trump president of the united states. i'm going to do everything i can, i know you will, too. god bless you, and thank you, each and every one of you, from the bottom of my heart. i'm so grateful, and i won't forget it. cheering we caught up with some trump supporters arriving at the rally in grand rapids. we wa nt we want our freedom back. i we want ourfreedom back. i mean, we love donald trump, we love his policies. we love the fact he is a fighter and doesn't give up. he is
10:04 pm
bigger and better than ever. we love him and i think he really, really gelled to the country, brought us together. gelled to the country, brought us touether. * ., gelled to the country, brought us touether. * . ., , , gelled to the country, brought us touether. ~ . ., , , together. after what happened last week, i together. after what happened last week. i hadn't— together. after what happened last week, i hadn't planned _ together. after what happened last week, i hadn't planned on - together. after what happened last| week, i hadn't planned on attending a rally— week, i hadn't planned on attending a rally this _ week, i hadn't planned on attending a rally this year because i had been in so _ a rally this year because i had been in so many— a rally this year because i had been in so many in the 2016 and 2020 election — in so many in the 2016 and 2020 election. but i am here to show solidarity— election. but i am here to show solidarity with trump that we are behind _ solidarity with trump that we are behind him. so long as he stays in the fight, — behind him. so long as he stays in the fight, we are behind him. let's speak tojenny kumah, who is at the rally. short speech from jd vance, about 30 minutes, but i suppose it was designed to warm up the crowd. yes. designed to warm up the crowd. yes, and what a crowd _ designed to warm up the crowd. yes, and what a crowd he's _ designed to warm up the crowd. 133 and what a crowd he's going to have. the trump team will be pleased with the turnout. the queues stretched back for about half a mile. capacity inside is 12,000. the pictures we have seen on the inside shows it is pretty much full to capacity. this rally is significant for a number of reasons. this is the first since the shooting last week. it is also the
10:05 pm
first since the convention and the confirmation of donald trump and jd vance. and this state is significant. it is a key battleground. donald trump won here in 2016 byjust 10,000 battleground. donald trump won here in 2016 byjust10,000 votes. it then flipped back to the democrats, we joe then flipped back to the democrats, wejoe biden winning here with around 150,000 votes. this election ofjd vance as vice president is seen as a move to appeal to working—class voters in the so—called rust belt area. in fact, he mentioned in his acceptance speech this state, as well as pennsylvania, wisconsin and ohio and stressed his working—class background and said he would not forget working—class people. generally, the mood around here is buoyant. but the republicans are saying that the party feels more united than it has been for decades.
10:06 pm
and some are contrasting that with the situation with the democrats. as questions continue around the future president biden continuing in the presidential race, as more democrats call for him to step aside. and jd vance tweeted today that everyone calling onjoe biden to stop running without also calling on him to resign the presidency is engaged in an absurd level of cynicism. if you can't run, you can't serve. he should resign now. generally, donald trump has been pretty muted on the whole situation around joe biden continuing the race. but today, we've had that kind of intervention byjd vance. i didn't, mean welcome is saying that he is continuing in the race to win it —— biden, meanwhile, is saying. and he will continue campaigning next week after isolating from 11 —— from covid. the langham it is the first time since
10:07 pm
that failed assassination attempt. —— it is the first time. what has been the difference? the big difference is it is indoors. that has been easier to secure it. so people are being checked on their way in and there have been checks within the ground. just walking around, the presence feels quite intense. there is a lot of security and a lot of officers around. and people we have been speaking to have mentioned they feel safe. they feel that after what happened, security will be higher than ever. some are saying is you heard earlier that they wanted to turn out regardless of any fears they might have because of any fears they might have because of what happened last week. there was one reference _ of what happened last week. there was one reference during - of what happened last week. there was one reference during the - of what happened last week. there was one reference during the jd was one reference during thejd vance speech to kamala harris and attacking her. it seems perhaps the trump campaign is realising she might possibly be one of the replacements forjoe biden if he does indeed step aside from the race
10:08 pm
and they are preparing the attacks against her if that is the case. yes, and i guess many ways, they can continue attacking joe biden's record through kamala harris because she has served alongside him and served in government. but obviously, there will be a need to slightly change tack because one of the key strategies has been attacking joe biden's capacity. his age and fitness to serve. and that is something they cannot really do, it doesn't quite apply it to kamala harris. , , . ~ doesn't quite apply it to kamala harris. , , ., ~ i. , doesn't quite apply it to kamala harris. , ., ~' , . harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed- and _ harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. and we _ harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. and we will _ harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. and we will bring - harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. and we will bring you - harris. jenny, thank you very much indeed. and we will bring you that l indeed. and we will bring you that trump rally as soon as it starts and he starts speaking. joe biden says he's "looking forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week" after being isolated with covid. pressure is growing on the us president to quit his run for re—election.
10:09 pm
a democratic congressman, who described mr biden as a friend, said he didn't seem to recognise him at a d—day event last month. no—one knows exactly what will be the final end of the solution within the final end of the solution within the democratic party, but president biden appears to be dug in even as a cause for him to exit the race continue to grow. more importantly, we are hearing from more and more congressional democrats, as well as big dollar donors who want to see the president leave this race. however, what we also continue to see that rank—and—file voters within the democratic party are continuing to voice their support and want the president to stay in this race. obviously, we have had some visible calls from people wanting him to step down, but we have had indirect pressure and away from a visible lack of support from perhaps people like former president obama. i think former president _ like former president obama. i think former president barack _ like former president obama. i think former president barack obama - like former president obama. i think former president barack obama is i former president barack obama is actually one of those people who is perhaps orchestrating a way for the current president to leave this race. we're told joe biden is very
10:10 pm
incensed by that. but look, the more it seems these calls grow for biden to leave, the more dug in he becomes. and i think what we are seeing here is a crisis within the party is becoming increasingly more problematic as the republican party is becoming more unified. and that could lead to a certain drop in the polls. but again, it is about 100 days until the election, which is plenty of time to right the ship. the question is, can they? find plenty of time to right the ship. the question is, can they? and if it were to happen. — the question is, can they? and if it were to happen, one _ the question is, can they? and if it were to happen, one option - the question is, can they? and if itj were to happen, one option people have talked about is kamala harris. who else do you think would be in the running and what kind of polling is there that gives you any sense of how these people would go against former president trump? melt. former president trump? well, alread , former president trump? well, already. we _ former president trump? well, already, we are _ former president trump? well, already, we are hearing - former president trump? well, already, we are hearing from i former president trump? -ii already, we are hearing from people like governor gretchen whitmer in michigan, governor gavin newsom of california who already said if in factjoe biden drops out of the race, they will notjoin, meaning
10:11 pm
they will not want to be part of an open primary. and if kamala is the actual candidate, they do not want to be seen as her running mate. so clearly, what we are seeing here evenif clearly, what we are seeing here even if biden drops out, we are now seeing that this might be much more difficult than some of those leaders have imagined because some of the people who they might want to lean on to take biden's place are now saying they want nothing to do with the ticket if in fact the president does inside —— does decide to exit the race. to the middle east next. israel says it has carried out a series of air strikes on yemen — which is controlled by the iranian—backed houthis. they say 80 people were injured in the attack. these pictures were released by the israel defense forces and show one of the f—15jets taking off from an unidentified location to hit targets inside yemen. video from yemen shows huge fires around the port city of hodeidah. the houthi—run government in sana'a says israel struck oil storage facilities close to the coast,
10:12 pm
as well as a nearby power plant. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, said the port was being used as an entry point for the militia to receive iranian weapons. israel said the houthis had carried out hundreds of attacks on israel in recent months, and israel responded when someone was harmed. a houthi spokesperson said there would be an "effective response" to the idf attack. let's speak to our diplomatic correspondent paul adams, who is in jerusalem. fingers up today with the latest on this. , , ~ , ., , this. -- bring us. well, this was the first time _ this. -- bring us. well, this was the first time israel _ this. -- bring us. well, this was the first time israel has - this. -- bring us. well, this was i the first time israel has retaliated against the houthis for their repeated attempts to target israel both with drones and ballistic missiles. and i don't think there was any doubt yesterday morning when that drone made it through to the heart of tel aviv that israel would retaliate after months in which it basically let the americans and the british do thejob basically let the americans and the british do the job of trying to deter the houthis. since an israeli
10:13 pm
civilian was killed and that, in israel's view, was a red line. and israel's view, was a red line. and israel has said it will continue to act in that way, should they see fit. ithink act in that way, should they see fit. i think the choice of target was quite telling. both as you mentioned in the introduction because israel sees hodeidah as very much associated with the bringing in of iranian weapons to the houthis. but also in the words of yoav gallant, israel's defence minister this evening, to send the widest possible message around the middle east, that scene of an absolute inferno raging across the port in hodeidah was designed to tell israel's enemies across the region that it will not hesitate to take action when it feels that the lives of israelis are in danger. so does this amount to a new escalation in this amount to a new escalation in this conflict? well, we've seen throughout the last nine or ten months of the war in gaza has raged, we've seen fighting, sometimes
10:14 pm
intense fighting on the lebanese border between israel and hezbollah. and we've also seen this on the front, the houthis launching their attacks against israel. all of which of course, in israel's view, is connected with iran. the power which supports hezbollah in lebanon and supports hezbollah in lebanon and supports the houthis in yemen. and it is iran which israel thinks the international community should be pressuring to put all of this to an end. * ., ., ,., pressuring to put all of this to an end. * ., ., , . pressuring to put all of this to an end. * ., ., ' . ., end. and what about the effect of air strikes on _ end. and what about the effect of air strikes on the _ end. and what about the effect of air strikes on the capabilities - end. and what about the effect of air strikes on the capabilities of l air strikes on the capabilities of the houthis? because we have had the attacks by the us and the uk, the air strikes attacks by the us and the uk, the airstrikes in attacks by the us and the uk, the air strikes in retaliation they said four attacks at the houthis were carrying out on shipping in the red sea, yet those attacks then carried on. how effective is it to carry out these air strikes and you think we will have more tit—for—tat, if you like? it will have more tit-for-tat, if you like? , ., , ., ., like? it is a good question. how effective are — like? it is a good question. how effective are those _ like? it is a good question. how effective are those so _ like? it is a good question. how effective are those so far? - like? it is a good question. how effective are those so far? notl like? it is a good question. how - effective are those so far? not very effective. indeed, there are reports suggesting that the americans are acutely conscious of this and
10:15 pm
perhaps think they need to rethink how they target or may be who they target in yemen to try and have that kind of deterrent effect. will the arrival of the israelis on the scene as part of those attacks on yemen change the calculation? probably not. i think the targets seem to have been perhaps not entirely, but somewhat symbolic because of that enormous inferno that was generated. i think that was designed to send this really kind of striking message to the houthis and to their iranian backers. but i think there is every expectation that the houthis will, as they have threatened on numerous occasions and, indeed, today, will continue to try and lash out both against shipping moving through the red sea, something they have carried on doing absolutely without cease for months and months and months now, and also attempting to hit israel. and there was a report an hour or so ago suggesting some kind
10:16 pm
of ballistic missile possibly had been fired once again towards israel. the israeli military are saying that they have seen no evidence of that. but i'm sure the israelis will be assuming that there will be more of this to come. paul adams, will be more of this to come. paul adams. thank— will be more of this to come. paul adams, thank you _ will be more of this to come. paul adams, thank you very _ will be more of this to come. paul adams, thank you very much indeed for the analysis of that situation. back to michigan and the rally at grand rapids and we are about to hearfrom former grand rapids and we are about to hear from former president trump. that is now his running mate, officially the candidate for the vice president candidacy officially the candidate for the vice president candidachd vance. we think he might be no introducing former president trump.— we think he might be no introducing former president trump. before i do, let me 'ust former president trump. before i do, let me just say- -- _ former president trump. before i do, let me just say. .. sorry. _ former president trump. before i do, let mejust say... sorry. i _ former president trump. before i do, let me just say. .. sorry. i had - former president trump. before i do, let me just say. .. sorry. i had to - let me just say... sorry. i had to screw _ let me just say... sorry. i had to screw with — let me just say... sorry. i had to screw with you a little bit, right? jd! jd! _ screw with you a little bit, right?

because we spent $250 million —— and wisconsin. and when they go into the voting booth, they are going to say, we love this guy trump because he gave us 250 million jobs. we love this guy trump because he gave us 250 millionjobs. wisconsin is a very important state, as we know. but wisconsin did a greatjob. milwaukee did a greatjob. and the arena was fantastic. and it was just love. it was like a big beautiful four day lovefest. there was no fight. no fight, no screams, no shouting. no, get that guy off the platform. and in case there was, we had the hoax do with us, right? how good was he? how good was he? kid rock called. kid rock is big and he wanted to get down and he did an unbelievablejob. he was wanted to get down and he did an unbelievable job. he was great.
10:29 pm
