interest of the country, the party and for himself, frankly, to step aside and clear the way for conley harris. and i was relieved that he honoured his commitment to her that he made four years ago, right, to ensure that she would have the opportunity to carry on the legacy of the party and what would be best for the battle of the soul of the nation as he named his campaign in 2020. so to see him step aside and do it in such a marvellous way, i think some medsjoe biden's legacy is the type of leader he wants to be remembered by. there was a lot of pushback about who joe biden remembered by. there was a lot of pushback about whojoe biden was in the late 80s and early 90s. we heard it over and over again in 2020 and the fulfillment of what he wanted to become, the transformation you saw in real time, the ways in which he pushed back against police immunity when donald trump was touting immunity for police and of course for himself. i think demonstrates the kind of leadership he wants to be remembered by, and of course

there is the rest of this term to be fulfilled and he can continue on that legacy there. for kamala harris to say this is what i'm going to do, i'm absolutely going to secure this nomination, to raise the type of money she raised in a 12 hour, in a 24 money she raised in a 12 hour, in a 2a hour period from small donors was reminiscent of what so many of us felt in 2008 with president obama. i think the difference here is that then we could concentrate on hope and change in the optimism that came along with that ticket. now we've got to focus on winning a political war. this is not your run—of—the—mill campaign. this is a campaign notjust for the soul of campaign not just for the soul of america, campaign notjust for the soul of america, but it truly is a war for protecting and preserving the type of democracy that was enshrined in those documents that this country was founded upon that left so many of us... we was founded upon that left so many of us... ., ., .,, of us... no going back was the message _ of us... no going back was the message today. _ of us... no going back was the message today. susan, - of us. .. no going back was the message today. susan, i- of us... no going back was the message today. susan, i know of us... no going back was the - message today. susan, i know you formerly worked forjoe biden, but the split screen moment they are all of him on his way back from delaware having recovered from covid, and

what we saw there in wisconsin, it really does speak to that relief, i think, that angela is talking about, there is just a whole different feel around the campaign. that's no detriment tojoe biden, but she's younger, she's energised, it was a spirited first speech. we younger, she's energised, it was a spirited first speech.— younger, she's energised, it was a spirited first speech. no doubt, the last few weeks _ spirited first speech. no doubt, the last few weeks have _ spirited first speech. no doubt, the last few weeks have been - spirited first speech. no doubt, the i last few weeks have been tumultuous, to say— last few weeks have been tumultuous, to say the _ last few weeks have been tumultuous, to say the least, for everyone in our country. _ to say the least, for everyone in our country, and forjoe biden personally and for those of us who love him _ personally and for those of us who love him and care about him and have worked _ love him and care about him and have worked for— love him and care about him and have worked for him. but ijust got done watching _ worked for him. but ijust got done watching kamala harris give a barn—burner of a speech that i know that most— barn—burner of a speech that i know that most democrats believe in helping — that most democrats believe in helping the middle class, moving forward, — helping the middle class, moving forward, passing the torch, which joe biden— forward, passing the torch, which joe biden has so gracefully done. he is a transformational president and he will— is a transformational president and he will lay— is a transformational president and he will lay out for us tomorrow night, — he will lay out for us tomorrow night, which i can't wait to see him on what _ night, which i can't wait to see him on what he — night, which i can't wait to see him on what he intends to do to complete his term _ on what he intends to do to complete his term to— on what he intends to do to complete his term to pass the torch to conley

susan, clearly the republicans are going to come after her onjoe biden's record. they are going to try to attach or to his record and particularly his record on the border and immigration. particularly his record on the borderand immigration. how much does she need to plough her own pharaoh away from the president or would you advise that she stands alongside him on this campaign? wasn't that a wonderful moment where you see the care and the consideration that these two, joe biden and kamala harris have for each other and to talk about the way that donald trump and jd vance have gone after her personally, you talk about the issue of the border, there was a deal that was worked out with the white house— was a deal that was worked out with the white house where donald trump killed the deal. _ the white house where donald trump killed the deal, why? _ the white house where donald trump killed the deal, why? not _ the white house where donald trump killed the deal, why? not because - the white house where donald trump killed the deal, why? not because he| killed the deal, why? not because he wanted _ killed the deal, why? not because he wanted to— killed the deal, why? not because he wanted to solve a problem but because — wanted to solve a problem but because he wanted to campaign. it

osborne. you are watching bbc news. on monday kimberley cheatle told a congressional committee she was still the best person to lead the secret service. this afternoon she resigned. bowing, almost inevitably, to the immense pressure she has been facing since the attempted assassination of donald trump. in her opening statement, cheatle acknowledged the agency had "failed". the secret service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders. on july 13, we failed. as the director of the united states secret service, i take full responsibility for any security lapse of our agency. in one particularly damning moment, the director confessed that those protecting the former president had been alerted to a suspicious individual "somewhere between two and five times" before the gunman opened fire. there is still an ongoing investigation into what went wrong, but this particular exchange in the hearing reminded us how close they had come to disaster.

i have never had any long gun training in my life. i own an ar15, and the last time i shot it — i shot it one time my whole life — was six years ago. that is until saturday, where we recreated the events in savoy, texas _ we recreated what happened. i was lying prone on a sloped roof at 130 yards at 6:30pm at night, and i knew he had a scope, i didn't know what kind, red dot or magnify, so i shot eight rounds from both. you know what the result was? 15 out of 16 kill shots! and the one i missed would've hit the president's ear. that's a 9a% success rate, and that shooter was a better shot than me. it is a miracle president trump wasn't killed. bryce reeves, republican state senator in virginia joins me now. very good evening to you. thank you for coming on the programme. there had been bipartisan calls for kimberly cheadle to step down, your reaction to her resignation? welcome

where we had blue skies through much of the day. but these areas may not do quite so well in the next few days. there is more cloud coming in from the atlantic that will push its way steadily eastwards — maybe bring a little rain. ahead of that though, arriving, any showers that are formed across eastern areas won't last long at all, and the cloud will come and go a bit overnight. it should be dry overnight, the winds will be light, and those temperatures by the end of the night, typically 11 or 12 degrees. now there is more cloud coming in from the atlantic tomorrow. there will be some sunshine at times, could be a little bit hazy, mind you, and across some eastern areas we may well find one or two showers breaking out as well. but it's towards the west where we've got the cloud thickening in northern ireland, later westernmost parts of scotland, wales and the southwest, where we'll see damp weather moving in as well. and so for these areas in the west, temperatures are going to be a little bit lower on wednesday. further east, it will be warmer. could reach 26 degrees in the south east of england — depends how much sunshine there's going to be. but as we head into thursday,

it's cloudy skies that will dominate a tangle of weather fronts across the uk. rather messy sort of picture. cloudy skies, a bit of rain from time—to—time here and there, particularly in the west. there's a risk of some heavy rain pushing its way eastwards across southern parts of england, especially into the afternoon, but further north across eastern england and eastern scotland, they may well be dry, and temperatures here reaching the low 20s at best on thursday. things are a bit more straightforward by the end of the week, because these weather fronts are going to move away, taking rain away from overnight. the rain still not far away from the south east of england through much of friday, but otherwise we'll see some sunny spells. there will be a few showers breaking out, and these are most likely where the winds are a bit stronger in northern ireland
8:28 pm
and across scotland — some of those showers could be a little on the sharp side. temperatures are back down to 18 degrees in glasgow, and a high of 23 celsius in the south east of england. but what of the weekend? well, saturday we'll see some sunshine. some showers for the northern half of the uk. should be drier though on sunday, and in some sunshine, maybe a bit warmer as well.
