local people have described horrifying details at the scene, let me show you the live pictures. you see the area still cordoned off with the emergency services still there, local people have described horrifying details at the scene, but we still wait for further official updates both from the police and the ambulance service. let's get the latest. let's speak to our correspondent elaine dunkley, who is outside alder hey hospital. what are the authorities there saying to you?— saying to you? this is a truly horrific incident _ saying to you? this is a truly horrific incident right - saying to you? this is a truly horrific incident right at - saying to you? this is a truly horrific incident right at the l saying to you? this is a truly - horrific incident right at the start of the school summer holidays. what emergency services will have seen, heard and dealt with today would have been truly grim. but we do know is 13 and blintzes were sent to that scene, wilson or there was an area —— we also know there were air ambulances. some will have been

further update coming from police? we know that about 15 minutes away from here, there is a police operation going on at a building we understand that that might have some links to the man who is in custody who was arrested here at the scene where the knife was retrieved, and he was taken away for questioning at a nearby police station for a we understand an operation is going on there. that is normal practice, the police would go to any address that is lent with anybody involved or is said to be involved in an incident as tragic as this. here at the scene, there is still police looking through the building. down the road from behind me, there is a little alleyway, and that elevate leads to alleyway, and that elevate leads to a business park, and that is where it was taking place. it is probably 50 metres off this road, but the number of vehicles there, the number of vehicles in that car park of the

business park points to the fact that this is the centre of where the police operation is continuing. forensic science offices are there as well as scene of crime officers, and they are working painstakingly throughout it, apparently it was an awful scene confronting them. there are people who managed to get young children and everyone else in that area way to safety and so they could be treated at the scene by paramedics who arrived on the northwest ambulance, air ambulance service, a doctor led service, able to help. there were also fire crews who arrived early as well because their fire station is who arrived early as well because theirfire station is not who arrived early as well because their fire station is not far from here, and they were able to provide not only first aid but also to get people away from the scene and get them to safety, so in total, eight people so far we understand have been injured. that number may rise as the evening goes on. they have been taken to three hospitals, two i don't hospitals in the report and on

you are watching bbc news. let's return to that breaking news of the last hour or so. the former bbc news presenter huw edwards has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children. with more on this, here's our culture correspondent, lizo mzimba. lizo, tell us more. of course, huw edwards was _ lizo, tell us more. of course, huw edwards was formerly _ lizo, tell us more. of course, huw edwards was formerly one - lizo, tell us more. of course, huw edwards was formerly one of i lizo, tell us more. of course, huw edwards was formerly one of the l edwards was formerly one of the bbc*s best and highest—paid presenters of the face of everything from royal occasions to general election coverage. he left the bbc in april, resigned from the corporation, and that followed an investigation into his behaviour

that started last summer was to ease been charged with three counts of making indecent images of a child. we have a couple of statements, one from the crown prosecution service, says that mr edwards will appear at westminster magistrates* court on wednesday, the 31st ofjuly 2024, two days* time, and that he has been charged with three offences of making indecent images of children. in the in more detailfrom them at the pilot and police service in london. they say the offences are alleged to have taken place between december 2020 and april 2022 and relate to images shared on a whatsapp chat. they say huw edwards was arrested on the 8th of november 2023 and that he was charged on wednesday the 26th ofjune following authorisation from the crown prosecution service and that he was then failed to appear at westminster magistrates* court in london this wednesday, the 31st ofjuly. huw

5:18 pm
force in lebanon. they deny carrying out the attack. israel*s benjamin netanyahu cut short his trip to the united states. israel*s security cabinet has authorised the prime minister and defence minister to retaliate when and how they see fit. gershon baskin is the middle east director of the international communities organisation. i talked to him earlier. this was his analysis of how israel might respond. there will be a retaliation of some sort. we don*t know the extent... i expect that israel will try to hit infrastructure — civilian infrastructure and military infrastructure. i think that because the prime minister and defence minister have been given the power by the cabinet to decide, it will be more restrained than if the entire cabinet was weighing in, where the voices
5:19 pm
are coming out of israel for a very strong response. but i don*t think that israel, nor lebanon, nor hezbollah have the appetite for a full—scale war, as we have seen over the past ten months. israel will be very aware of hezbollah*s arsenal. they*ll also be very aware of what we saw over recent weeks, which was hezbollah actually breaching israeli air space with their drones and actually showing potential targets. they will be very worried about that? for sure. and we know that from reports coming out of israel that the rockets that hit the soccer field in majdal shams was an iranian rocket. we just heard the warning from the iranian president that if israel strikes lebanon, there will be an iranian response, this could spin out of control into a regional war, and that could be horrendous
5:20 pm
for everyone here and for the entire planet. we need to make sure this does not happen. israel needs to be cautioned by its allies. those people who have contacts and friends with lebanon need to make sure that the lebanese government reins in hezbollah, not let it spin out of control. let*s get the view from lebanon. in beirut and elsewhere, they are hearing all of what is coming out of israel and the threats against hezbollah. i have been speaking to our bbc arabic reporter carine torbey. she has been telling me what it is like there. these are very, very tense moments in lebanon. people are just bracing themselves for what can come next. they know that something big will happen. they have no idea where this could happen or how big it is, or the repercussions of, you know, what israel could do in the next coming hours or days. it*s very tense suspense in the country. everyone is following, you know, very closely any kind of notification that comes from israel, any kind of development on the border
5:21 pm
between israel and lebanon. as you know, this is an open front in southern lebanon, northern israel. it*s been witnessing daily exchange of fire for the last ten months. but something else that we don*t know what it is might happen in the next hours. and this is what people at the moment are just waiting anxiously to find out what it can be. what is also very much on people*s minds is what hezbollah*s response can be for whatever attack can be carried out by israel, because hezbollah has announced that, as it denies that it has carried out the attack on majdal shams in the israeli—occupied golan, it says that it wouldn*t consider any israeli offensive outside what has been going on as a response or a retaliation, the way israel describes it, and therefore it will consider it as an assault on lebanon
5:22 pm
and hezbollah might retaliate in kind what it considers as an assault. so these, as i said, are very, very critical moments, everyone on the edge of their seats, and probably not only in lebanon but also around the world. there are very, very intense calls at the moment between so many different parties trying to restrain israel, trying to contain the situation and obviously talking to both sides to try as much as possible to manage any fallout from what may happen in the next couple of hours or in the next hours or days. carine torbey, our correspondent there in beirut, and of course all of the heightened tension around hezbollah and lebanon in the north,
5:23 pm
thatis hezbollah and lebanon in the north, that is going on while the gaza war ten months into that continues. that major show you the live pictures we are getting, a huge explosion there, and this around the rougher region, and this around the rougher region, and of course we have seen in recent days the israeli strikes in khan younis, but this which looks from these pictures like a very large explosion, there in gaza —— the rafah region. of course, as the tension increases over the situation with hezbollah and lebanon, the question i was asking a couple of our guests through the course of this afternoon, can israel exley fight a war on two fronts? of course, the west and international community, the white house, urging restraint over the situation in lebanon, saying that the white house earlier, and all that work could be avoided, but the situation in gaza continues there, with these the latest pictures coming to us, the

then came the head—to—head with france*s victor koretzky, and that move, with just a few metres to go on the near 90—minute race, pidcock passed koretzy to take the title again. never gave up, and i knew that is what i had to do. i knew victor would be fast in the last lap. i knew it was going to be a big, big fight, and he left a gap and i had to go for it, so, yeah, that*s racing. some people might view it differently, and... iwant racing. some people might view it differently, and... i want to show what sport is, not giving up. team gb*s first gold of the games came in team eventing, another 0lympic title retained. tokyo 2020 champions laura collett and tom mcewan, joined by world number one ros canter, sealed victory in the final showjumping stage at versailles. host nation france took the silver, japan in bronze, while collett also went on to win a bronze in the individual event. the most recent british medal has
