icame i came here to pay my respects to the victims and families who are going through more pain and grief that most of us can't imagine. i can't imagine as a dad myself. to get an image from the chief constable and the emergency services about the emergency investigation but also importantly, to have the opportunity to say to those who are responding yesterday in the emergency services to say a personal thank you to them and to shake their hand and to say that, as prime minister, on behalf of the country, we are gratefulfor minister, on behalf of the country, we are grateful for what they did. they will of course that they are professionals to anything but there is no pretending that what they had to respond to yesterday that was ordinary, they were absolutely professional and it was important for me to come and see simple words, thank you. for me to come and see simple words, thank ou. ., ., . ., , ., thank you. you touch on it before but as a father, _

4:05 pm
of the absolute grief that is here in southport. emotions are running high, here is you can imagine. what it is, this was a summer holiday events that was laid on for children between six and ii events that was laid on for children between six and 11 years old. it was a taylor swift dance themed event and you can imagine that happening anywhere in the world. during the summer holiday and parents dropping them off to have a nice time. it has turned into an absolute horrific incident. where three young girls have died, we've had the names and the pictures in the last hour or so, there is nine—year—old alice aguiar who was a peach portuguese who was an only child, so you can't imagine
4:06 pm
what her parents are going through. we've also had the youngest victim, a six—year—old bebe king and there were seven—year—old elsie dot stancombe. there three have lost their lives in this incident and you heard the prime minister, sir keir starmer, talking after he had been talking to some of the emergency workers and shortly after that, he came down here and made some flowers just behind me. silently moving up, laying those flowers down. emotions were running high and there were a few shouts and one lady got very emotional because she said that she was a friend of one of the families that has lost a loved one, so she was visibly upset. keir starmer laying flowers earlier, the home secretary yvette cooper also laying shout flowers. she was visibly

flowers and she had to the local mp and i have to say after sir keir starmer had left, some paramedics turned up and there was probably about seven about them to play some flowers and again, they were in tears, some of them. we don't know if they were involved yesterday but certainly some firefighters who were here earlier were involved yesterday. spontaneously, the crowds started clapping. they were clapping those paramedics because they understand what those paramedics had to face yesterday when this incident was unfolding. they turned up to find young children stabbed in the most serious of ways. that is why, i think, the public emotion here is so high. the fact that we saw them clapping those paramedics and earlier some nurses put turned up as
4:08 pm
well. they were also visibly upset, it is going to take, matthew, a very long time for this community to even start thinking about recovering from what happened because at the one question they are still asking is why? we don't have, of course, the answer to that because the investigation is continuing, a 17—year—old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. ., , suspicion of murder and attempted murder. . , . suspicion of murder and attempted murder. ., , . murder. thanks very much, nicky schillerthe. — murder. thanks very much, nicky schiller the. we _ murder. thanks very much, nicky schiller the. we will— murder. thanks very much, nicky schiller the. we will be _ murder. thanks very much, nicky schiller the. we will be hearing . schiller the. we will be hearing more about that later. he is axing patrick's church in southport, thank you very much for being here with us. the community is absolutely shell—shocked, we have seen that give me an idea of the sort of things people have been saying to

4:10 pm
24 tributes and this was a little over 2a hours ago since dealing with the horrifying things that met them when they arrived at the scene. these are they arrived at the scene. these are the pictures from the last little while, let me ask you because i was hearing what people had been saying to you. what have you been able to say to them?— say to them? well, that we love them, that _ say to them? well, that we love them, that they _ say to them? well, that we love them, that they are _ say to them? well, that we love them, that they are caring - say to them? well, that we love them, that they are caring for i say to them? well, that we love . them, that they are caring for them and i think it's not so much the words, our tears are a great communicated, tears in our eyes. we can come because we love them, very upset, it could be the look on our face, it could be a jester, and so many different ways we communicate that we care because the archbishop sent this message to us just said that he was simply silent before the tragic and senseless loss of innocent lives, very powerful line, what can you say? what we may not be able to say that make sense that we can love each other, we can care for
4:11 pm
each other, we can show that we have every chapter and that is what the churches are doing, opening the doors and two nights of the people can come and just find some kind of peaceis can come and just find some kind of peace is some way of expressing their love. 50 peace is some way of expressing their love-— peace is some way of expressing theirlove. , , their love. so many different parts ofthe their love. so many different parts of the community _ their love. so many different parts of the community need _ their love. so many different parts of the community need support, i of the community need support, not just those first responders, not just those first responders, not just the people who arrived to help, notjust just the people who arrived to help, not just those just the people who arrived to help, notjust those people who were there at the scene, and of course all of the families involved, all of them need support, i heard you say something that struck me a little earlier, you said this is one act of evil and there have been hundreds of acts of kindness. is that something that you want people to hang onto? absolutely, there are countless and hundreds of thousands, beyond measure, acts of kindness from so many people across the country and across the world. who are sending love here, it is raining down on
4:12 pm
southport. so much love, i'm so much caring and consideration. not least, the power of the prayer of tears that i recall them, without words, beyond words, we send love and each act of love, each giving of love like that from whoever around the country in the world, is so welcome here in southport. for the families and all those affected.— and all those affected. thank you very much _ and all those affected. thank you very much for— and all those affected. thank you very much for your _ and all those affected. thank you very much for your time - and all those affected. thank you very much for your time thank i and all those affected. thank you | very much for your time thank you very much for your time thank you very much forjoining us here on bbc news. because we have been hearing over the last few hours are little more about the suspect in police custody so let's cross to my corresponding to has more about that side of things. take me through what we know about the 17—year—old.
4:13 pm
we've been reporting today more about it we know that he was arrested at the scene by armed officers and police say that they recovered a knife. we also know that the police then searched a house in a village to north of southport being in lancashire. the suspect is a 17—year—old, and criminaljustice terms that led a youth, it means that in the event, he is charged he would not be named by the police by that stage because he is considered a youth, we know that he was born in cardiff. we also report that he has a brother who was also born in cardiff and elder brother, and his parents are originally from rwanda. in east africa. in terms of the investigation itself, the police, when they arrested the person for serious crimes, they can apply to hold a suspect for longer than the 24 hold a suspect for longer than the 2a hours and they could hold a person for and charges have been
4:14 pm
made. he was defecting over 2a hours ago now so the inference being that the police have applied to detaining for up to 36 hours and then comes a point when they can to sustain a suspect for 96 hours and that does happen sometimes in these cases and with this investigation, they will be working very hard to try and understand their motivation, what the motive actually is for the attack and that will require looking attack and that will require looking at digital devices, speaking to people who know the suspect, either know them in the longer term way or have had interactions with him, more recently. in the hours and days leading up,. recently. in the hours and days leading unu— recently. in the hours and days leadin: u,. * , , ., leading up,. and every statement from the police, _ leading up,. and every statement from the police, they've - leading up,. and every statement i from the police, they've underlined and urging people not to speculate and urging people not to speculate and actually in one of the statements around lunchtime, they made the point that one of the names to circulating on social media was
4:15 pm
incorrect. ., , to circulating on social media was incorrect. . , h, . incorrect. that is right, the police have said that, _ incorrect. that is right, the police have said that, they _ incorrect. that is right, the police have said that, they are - incorrect. that is right, the police| have said that, they are keen that people do not speculate about names and do not start putting picture on line of pictures on social media. saying that this person was the attacker, completely incorrect, the police have said that it is very unhelpful and is also quite dangerous for people who are and wrongly named as suspects. they are urging people not to do that. also, when a suspect is arrested, in this case he is a youth, police are also persuaded to say that the person was arrested, let us get on the job, do not post anything is potentially prejudiced if a person is charged. just one of the other things about this case is that police say that they are not currently treating this incident as a terrorist incident. that is a formal thing when the police, when an incident like this is treated as a terrorist incident
4:16 pm
and requires a formal investigation. they said this is not the case however they do understand that the detectives and counterterrorism policing are providing active support to the investigation, people should not read too much into it, counter detectives said they have a lot of skills and in terms of digital investigations looking to understand a motive. that is the sort of support they will be provided. sort of support they will be provided-— sort of support they will be rovided. . , . , provided. thanks very much, in terms ofthat provided. thanks very much, in terms of that asnect — provided. thanks very much, in terms of that asnect of _ provided. thanks very much, in terms of that aspect of the _ provided. thanks very much, in terms of that aspect of the story _ provided. thanks very much, in terms of that aspect of the story and - provided. thanks very much, in terms of that aspect of the story and the - of that aspect of the story and the investigation let us go there in the newsroom here in the programme in a moment or two. i will talk to the mayor of liverpool who was waiting, he's just been set up in terms of microphone and will talk to him on the programme injust a microphone and will talk to him on the programme in just a few minutes. you're watching bbc news.

let us return to our major story, here in the uk. which is that stabbing incident in the north west of england and we had to speak to the mayor of liverpool in a moment or two but we were getting updates from the scene and of course, is one of the confirmation of the police of the identities of the three girls who have died in the attack, six—year—old and a seven—year—old and a nine—year—old, we know that eight of the children are still in hospital, five of them are critically injured and two adult also in hospital. let's get the latest on that element of the story, our correspondent is outside alder hey. our correspondent is outside alder he . ~ * our correspondent is outside alder he .~ * , , our correspondent is outside alder he . ~ * , , ., , ., our correspondent is outside alder he. , ., hey. we've been promised an update from about nine _ hey. we've been promised an update from about nine o'clock _ hey. we've been promised an update from about nine o'clock this - hey. we've been promised an update from about nine o'clock this morning | from about nine o'clock this morning and it did come injust about midday today which was the news that nobody wants to hear was that alice aguiar had died as a result of her injuries overnight and can confirm the
4:19 pm
details to the other children who are involved, we know that they are still five children and adults who are in critical condition, with not been given any more details about them, we do not know how old the children of sex they are, what the details of their injuries are and we know that one person who was certainly injured as a result of the attack was leanne lucas who was a tribute paid online for the efforts that she made when this happened but we've not been given any official data in terms of her condition at the moment, the children injured at the hospital, at alder hey hospital in liverpool and also manchester children's hospital. the reason they were used, those two hospitals were used as every other major trauma centres the children in the north west of england and the scalable they are facing yesterday, alder declared as a major incident which gives you an idea of the scale of things that they were dealing with that has been stood down but these
4:20 pm
were difficult and distressing times for the doctors and nurses here this was not a situation, or an accident of children had an incident, but this was what police described as a ferocious attack on young primary school age children. i think would be also saw was the shock and numbness that there was in the community and i understand that the police called in this morning is right, it is beautifully sunny day in liverpool and it wasn't safe for this woman, but yet what you noticed was how quiet it was. as the summer holidays, you'd expect children to be playing but there was nobody and i think that is a sign of how stunned and shocked the communities. but you've also got the best people. a fundraising page has been set up to raise money for alder hey hospital which is treating some of the critically ill children, that was set up this morning and that is raised more than already today. let
4:21 pm
me “ust raised more than already today. let me just push it back to live page on bbc website because thatis live page on bbc website because that is constantly being updated their of course the three images of their of course the three images of the three girls we've been hearing about in the last little while i'm sir keir starmer playing his tribute. i said to go, that we would talk to livable's mayor but that is slightly delayed at the moment. things are quite fluid on the ground so will come away from that story for the next few minutes and returned to southport in the next little while. have has declared a period of mourning the landslides struck hilly areas have has declared a period of mourning in way—anad district — in the early hours of tuesday. rescue operations are under way, but are being hindered by heavy rains and the collapse of a crucial bridge. hospitals across kerala are filling up with people injured in the landslide.
4:22 pm
government ministers have visited some of those being treated. soldiers and all possible emergency service agencies, are being pressed into the rescue efforts. it's feared many people are still trapped in areas which emergency services have yet to reach. our south asia correspondent — samira hussain is in delhi. hundreds of officials are on the ground in kerala trying to rescue some of those that have been stranded as a result of these mudslides. what's making these rescue efforts really difficult, of course, is the continued rain. this is a region that has been seeing a lot of rain in the last few weeks. and it is that torrential rain that has triggered these mudslides, these landslides, rather. and the other thing that's making rescue efforts difficult is that a critical bridge that connects one of the regions that saw a landslide, that has been destroyed. members of the indian army are
4:23 pm
on the scene and they are creating this rope bridge to try and get to some of those people that are trapped. the expectation is that the death toll will likely increase as the rescuers get to some of the more cut off and remote regions. this is an area that has seen this kind of torrential rain before and flooding. back in 2018, some of the deadliest flooding had occurred in that area when more than 400 people had died. in later years, it hasn't been as deadly, but this is certainly one that officials are saying is quite worse, mostly because, you see that those rivers have been turned into swollen bodies full of mud and that is making it difficult. many officials believe that perhaps people may have been swept away in some of those rivers. and these rescue efforts are going to continue for the next several days.

there are reports that three people have died in venezuela's violent protests. quoting an ngo, newsagency agence france—presse says a further 44 people were injured. anger over the election results has led to demonstrations in towns and cities across venezuela, with people saying the announcement that nicolas maduro has won a third term as president was *fraudulent*. on monday, there were violent scenes across the capital, caracas. tear gas and rubber bullets were fired at angry protesters, who claimed the election had been stolen from the opposition. there is also growing international criticism of the election the organization of american states, which promotes co—operation between regional countries, says it cannot accept the result and that there was, what it described as, *exceptional manipulation'. every time you the very latest that

a mixed picture of consumer confidence in the us, as worries over inflation continue to bite. what does this all mean for the health of the economy? meanwhile in germany the economy contracts. could europe's largest economy be heading towards recession? welcome to business today, i'm lukwesa burak. we start in the us where consumer confidence has risen slightly injuly, but still remains relatively low amid continued worries about inflation and higher borrowing costs. the conference board survey released a short time ago, shows its consumer confidence index

increased to 100.3 this month from a downwardly revised 97.8 injune. let's get more on this with our north america business correspondent, erin delmore. just take us through these figures. what do they all mean? you now dead. a bit of a mixed picture. we are seeing that consumer confidence did rise injuly and consumers are largely seeing good things ahead for the economy and the strength of the labour market. in that number was a bit better than economist expectations and better than the number that we saw injune so what we can take away is that consumers expect better conditions over the next six months and that is something remarkable for this year but consumers are not so rosy about

present conditions and, as you mention, they are contending with a
