hello again. the most decorated gymnast of all time has just added gold medal numberfive to her olympic haul. simone biles won the other four at her debut games in rio, when she emerged as the sport's great superstar. three years ago came the dramatic "twisties", a sudden failure in spacial awareness that led to her withdrawing to protect her mental health. but now, on her so—called redemption tour, she's led the usa to another gold in the all around team event at paris 202a. biles impressed on all four rotations at the bercy arena, consistently amongst the leading scorers through all the disciplines, and the result was all but secured, as she completed her final rotation on the floor. team usa have now won this event in three of the last four

games, with the only silver following biles* withdrawal, three years ago, while she has now won a staggering 38 global medals overall, with even her opponents calling the american an unrivalled "queen" of gymnastics. i'm not really sure. i don't keep count. i don't keep stats. ijust go out here and do what i'm supposed to and i'm doing what i love and enjoying it, so that's really all that matters to me. yes, it's amazing, now that i hear it, but i don't think i will truly understand the depth of it until i walk away from the sport. so, you never know, because we still have a couple more competitions here, so i'm trying to focus on that, and so we'lljust have to see. well, usa finished ahead of italy, in second, their first medal in this event since 1928, and brazil snatched bronze, after a spectacular vault from rebecca andrade helped them leap from sixth to third in the final rotation. two legends remain on course to meet each other in the final

of the men's doubles, as both rafael nadal and, dramatically, again, andy murray extended their careers just a little bit more. murray and dan evans took great britain into the quarter finals, saving more match points — that's seven in total now — to beat the belgian pair on a deciding tie—break, 11—9. murray is retiring at the end of the games, with nadal potentially doing the same. he reached the last eight at roland garros with spanish team—mate carlos alcaraz, beating the pair from the netherlands, also on a deciding tie break. meanwhile, there was a big shock in the women's singles, as second seed coco gauff was beaten by donna vekic in the last 16, with the croatian winning in straight sets. the number one seed iga swiatek is also into the quarter finals, beating china's xiyu wang. elsewhere, there were two gold medals for great britain to take them to four on day four. nathan hales won the men's trap shooting event and there was a golden night in the pool, too, as the men's 4 x 200

metres freestyle relay team successfully defended their olympic title. the quartet ofjames guy, tom dean, matt richards and duncan scott secured a comfortable victory, to give team gb their first swimming gold in paris, finishing ahead of the usa and australia, and becoming the first in history to retain an olympic relay title with the same four swimmers. we've had some really special moments. we've won two olympic gold medal together on the same relay. we've been together for all of each other*s individual successes, we fought hard at trials to beat each other and then come back together as teams every single time, and yes, that is something really special. i think we share a bond, the four of us, that we will have the rest of our lives, and yes, it is an honour to be part of. the men's 800 metres freestyle brought a first gold of the games for ireland, daniel wiffen winning in an olympic record time, after the world champion hauled in italy's gregorio paltrinieri, who eventually finished third, with defending

champion bobby finke of the usa getting the silver. wiffen is the first athlete from northern ireland to win an olympic gold since 1988. the defending champion beat the world record holder in the final of the women's 100 metres backstroke. australia's kaylee mckeown retained the title she won in toyko, with a new olympic record, after powering past america's regan smith, who took the silver, ahead of her team—mate katherine berkoff. regan pushes me to the best of my abilities, and i do the same for her. we had a special moment after the race, just thanking one another, because i wouldn't be the athlete i am if it wasn't for her. so yeah, i couldn't say thank you enough to the people who pushed me every single day and keep me determined to keep on pushing. new zealand have retained their women's rugby sevens olympic title, but they were made to work for it against canada. at half time, it was the underdogs who led, but two second—half tries saw the reigning champions fight back to take the gold again, with a 19—12 win. the usa secured bronze, their first olympic rugby sevens medal, after

beating australia. olympic organisers say the men's and women's triathlons only have a 60% chance of going ahead on wednesday, after the men's event was postponed on tuesday. tests of the river seine in the early hours of the morning revealed the water was not clean enough for the swimming part of the race to take place. heavy rain in the french capital over the weekend had caused the water quality to diminish, and two training sessions had already been cancelled. the decision was taken to postpone, after a meeting early on tuesday morning, with the men's event now scheduled to take place following the conclusion of the women's event. we were very close to the threshold of world triathlon, which means we have in 2a hours, we have data on the river seine since one year, and especially three summers, so we can assess the evolution. we know that the sun and the heat have a very strong impact on the quality of the water, and that's why

we feel, because we're so close this morning, that we can hopefully believe that tomorrow morning the water quality will be better. there also won't be any surfing in tahiti on tuesday, with unfavourable winds at the pacific island venue leading to a halt in competition that could last into thursday. monday's action was also shortened, but not before a moment that has delivered one of the games* great viral photos. after brazilian surfer gabriel medina caught one of the day's biggest waves, he emerged from its so—called tube to celebrate his near—perfect performance, and french photographer jerome brouillet was there to capture it. the surfer posted it to his instagram account, where it's already had 5.5 million likes. away from the olympics, england's white—ball cricketers are looking for a new head coach, after matthew mott stepped down. the australian's two years in the role included a t20 world title, but england also failed to subsequently successfully defend either of their limited—overs world cups. jos buttler will remain as captain, with assistant coach marcus trescothick put in temporary charge for the series against

australia in september. he did lead england to the t20 world title in 2022, the year he took over, but their defence of the 50—over world cup in india last year was pretty shambolic, and even that run to the semifinals of the t20 world cup last month in the caribbean and the united states was on a wing and a prayer. maybe it was felt that mott and buttler were too similar in personality as a leadership team, and the next coach needs to be slightly stronger, to guide buttler to get those messages out to the players. but one name that will keep coming up is andrew flintoff. the former england all—rounder, who is currently head coach of the northern superchargers in the hundred, and has been part of the england backroom staff. now this would be a pretty sensational appointment, if it does happen, when you consider everything that andrew flintoff has gone through in the past year, but would england really turn to a man who is currently only in his first head coach'sjob

in professional cricket? we already know england's footballers are looking for a new mangaer, but eddie howe says he's had no contact with the football association over replacing gareth southgate, insisting he is fully committed to his job with newcastle. meanwhile, jack grealish says being left out of england's euro 2024 squad was the "most difficult thing" he's had to deal with in his career. the manchester city forward was a suprise omission from gareth southgate's squad, but insists he is determined to use the experience as motivation. i'll be honest, you know, it was probably, football—wise, the most difficult thing i've ever had to deal with, in terms of my own career. i felt like i should have been in the squad. i'm sure every person that didn't get picked in the squad, whether that's myself or any of the other players would have thought the same, i'm going to try to use that as motivation now going forward into the season, and hopefully i can prove some people wrong.

chelsea head coach enzo maresca says all of his players have accepted enzo fernandez*s apology, after the argentinian midfielder was filmed singing a derogatory song about france's black players. fernandez was accused of "uninhibited racism" by chelsea's french defender wesley fofana, for a video fernandez posted after argentina beat colombia in the copa america final earlier this month. afterjoining up with the squad, fernandez is understood to have addressed the incident, and chelsea will take no further action. just time to take a quick look at the medal table from the olympics before we go, after day four of competition at paris 202a. japan stay top of the medal table, with seven golds. they added one on tuesday. china and australia just behind them, with the hosts france in fourth. they're then followed by south korea, the usa and great britain.

much more on the website, including more of the medals table, if you wanted. that is it for me. thank you for watching. goodbye. hello. tuesday brought us the warmest day of the year so far. several parts of london saw temperatures up to 32 celsius, including heathrow, kew gardens, saintjames* park, as well, and it's notjust been the warmest day of the year, we've also officially seen a heat wave already in some regions, especially kent, east malling, and bramham, in west yorkshire. these areas have seen temperatures exceed their heatwave threshold for sunday, monday, and tuesday. so, already, three consecutive days, and we may well see another day or so of heatwave conditions in some areas. so, it's still warm and humid again, but a thunderstorm risk, as we head through wednesday in the southeast of england. to start the day, then,
2:56 am
we've got the heat and humidity in the south from the word go. it's fresher, further north, but long spells of sunshine, lots of dry weather, light winds, really pleasant late—july day, but it is humid towards the south, and, as we head through the afternoon, you can see those showers and thunderstorms starting to crop up, particularly so across parts of kent, into sussex, as well. they'll be hit—and—miss, so you might not see one, but if you do catch one, could be some localised flooding. top temperatures still 28, possibly 29, for central and southern areas. low—20s or high teens, though, further north. now, heading on into wednesday evening and overnight into thursday, some of those heavy showers and thunderstorms become a little bit more extensive, especially across parts of england and wales. could be a bit of rain across the west of scotland, heading on into thursday, as well. it's going to be another really muggy, sticky night in the south — mid—to—high—teens here — a little bit warmer further north than it has been overnight, too. now, through thursday, we've got this first mass of heavy showers and thunderstorms, it clears away,
2:57 am
and then, through the day, cloud and showers bubble up, so, again, some thunderstorms potentially breaking out, especially for england and wales, i think, during the afternoon. drier for scotland and northern ireland. temperatures 22—28 — so still above average for most of us. we've still got that warm air with us, as we head through friday, but later on friday, and into saturday, a frontal system pushes its way eastwards and that's going to allow fresher air to start to move in from the west. so, a change in weather—type as we head through friday into saturday. still quite warm and sunny in the south and east, i think, through friday, but the winds pick up in the north and the west, with the arrival of some showers, as low pressure starts to move in. so, temperatures around about 16—21 for northern ireland and scotland, still about 28 in the far south east, but then, eventually, things do turn a little bit fresher and more unsettled as we head into the weekend. bye for now.

the israeli military says it has killed hezbollah*s most senior military commander, fuad shukr, in an airstrike in beirut. israel says mr shukr, who has been hezbollah*s top military leader for years, was responsible for an attack that killed twelve children and young people in the israeli—occupied golan heights on saturday. israel's retaliation on tuesday struck a beirut suburb. lebanon's health ministry says at least three people have been killed and 7a were injured. lebanon's prime minister condemned the strike as a "criminal act", calling it a "clear and explicit violation of international law". israel's defence minster yoav gallant has said mr shukr "has the blood of many israelis on his hands". but the iran—backed group has denied responsibility for the golan heights attack. as the region braces for a larger—scale israeli retaliation grow, there are fears a serious escalation with hezbollah could dash hopes of a ceasefire in gaza. our correspondent quentin somerville sent this update from the scene of that beirut strike.
