good evening. welcome to newsnight, the home of insights and interviews. it's hard to comprehend that a former colleague, who for years had been the most prominent figure in bbc news, was today in court admitting three charges of possessing 41 indecent images of children. seven of them involved the most serious abuse, two of them picturing children as young as seven. he'll be sentenced in september. but tonight it is the bbc in the dock. newsnight can reveal that the bbc knew back in november that the investigation into one of their highest paid talents related to child abuse images. and they still paid him his salary.
