you are all caught up now. have a great night. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm gavin ramjaun. majestic leon marchand thrills the home crowd, with a two golds, on an historic night for him in men's swimming. a piece of history for america and katie ledecky, too, as she sets an olympic record in the womens 1500m freestyle. and japan continue to dominate in the men's gymnastics — but it's not the man you'd expect bringing home the gold, in the all—around. hello and welcome along to the programme. it's been all about leon

marchand in the pool on day five of the paris olympics. the french home favourite again took the roof off the la defense arena with golds in both the 200m butterfly and the 200 metres breaststroke. he now has three at the games in paris. marchand is the first to complete the olympic 200 metre butterfly—breaststroke double, and he broke the olympic record in both. first he won the butterfly — and then became the first swimmer to win two individual golds in one night at the olympics since 1976 with gold in the breaststroke. pan zhanle of china won the 100m freestyle in a stunning world record time of 16.40 seconds, shaving an incredible 0.40 seconds off his previous mark set at the world championships in doha last february. australia's kyle chalmers finished a distant second, while david popovici had to settle for bronze. history as well for team usa's katie ledecky, who became the first woman to win gold medals at four different olympic games after retaining her title

in the women's 1500m freestyle with another commanding performance on wednesday night. she's regarded as the greatest distance swimmer of all time, and came home with an olympic record, ahead of france's anastasiya kirpichnikova and germany's isabel gose. it's ledecky*s eighth career olympic title, moving her level for all—time swimming golds record. sweden's sarah sjostrom's late decision to enter the women's 100 metres freestyle paid off as she beat a top—quality field to clinch the gold medal. she edged out america's torri huske who took silver and and hong kong's bronze—winner siobhan haughey. japan continued their domination in the men's artistic gymnastics, with gold in the all—around, thanks to 20—year—old newcomer shinnosuke oka. the outsider got the better of countryman and tokyo champion daiko hashimoto and china's boheng zhang who took silver, and ruoteng xiao who claimed bronze. oka's win giving his nation a fourth—straight win in the event.

both triathlon races took place, after the mens event was postponed on tuesday because of poor water quality in the river seine. britain's alex yee looked as though he'd have to settle for silver in the men's race, just as he did in tokyo three years ago. but on the final lap of the 10k run, he overcame a14—second deficit to pass his great rival, new zealand's hayden wilde, and secure gold. great britain have won more triathlon medals than any other nation since becoming an olympic sport in 2000. the women were first to dive into the seine and their race was close until the final lap of the run, when france's cassandre beaugrand pulled clear of switzerland's julie derron with great britain's beth potter in third. derron says they had no concerns over the water quality. the swimming was fine during the race. we know that they took samples this morning. they take a little time to analyse so we don't know the results, obviously. and yeah, we'll trust the authorities and organisers that they keep us

safe, and so we had a safe race today. great britain's rowers failed to win a single gold in tokyo three years ago, bringing homejust two medals but they have a gold on the board with an incredible finish in the womens quadruple sculls. with 200 metres to go, they trailed the netherlands but pulled it back to take victory with the final stroke. lauren henry, lola anderson, hannah scott and georgina brayshaw won it by 0.15 of a second. they were seventh in tokyo. this is the first time team gb has won the men's or women's event. netherlands won the men's quad. to walk away with the gold this time, i don't think we all quite believe it. and well raced to the netherlands and germany. they had outstanding crews that were pushing us every day in training. i don't think it has sank in for all of us. we're over the moon. to come from seventh to first, i dunno,

i think you need take these experiences and grow from it — you can't let it get you down. that would go out to any of the rowers who are having theirfirst games and it isn't going to plan. so a fantastic performance from the british quartet, and afterwards we got the views of dame katherine grainger — double sculls gold medallist at london 2012 — and she believes the gold could inspire team gb*s rowing team. we have talked quite a lot about how different the team feels. three years ago in tokyo there were no gold medals at all, only two medals, no medals for the women, and a lot of fourth places. here we have arrived and even before the final starter they feel confident and are behaving with a balance in their step to see that that first gold medal come in will really ignite the rest of the team. —— bounce in their step. we have finals every single day through to saturday and a chance every day. i think we will see enthusiasm, excitement. we saw saw some of the british crews

rowing down, paddling through in training while the national anthem was playing. to have that blowing through tomorrow, and thinking it's my chance, we'll do it for the team. china have continued their perfect record, making it three golds from three diving events so far. chen yuxi and (juan hongchan away the competition in the women's synchronised 10m platform, finishing far out in front. the bronze went to britain's andrea spendolini—sirieix and lois toulson who leapfrogged canada with this final dive. north korea on the left took their second silver of the games. we've had both finals in the freestyle bmx, the men's gold has gone to argentina, with britain's kieran reilly taking the silver medal. on his olympic debut jose torres gil had a flawless first run, which stood for the entire competition. it was argentina's first individual medal in the event and theirfirst medal at the paris games. world champion reilly beat france's anthonyjeanjean to silver. you can't really overestimate the games. i knew it was going to be a huge spectacle and it absolutely lived up to that. it's just been trying to take

in every moment that i can while i have been out here. i am excited to go and see my family after this. yes, the games has been nothing short of amazing. i came in here with a dream of being an olympian and i am leaving as a medallist. it's really special. in the women's event, 18—year—old deng yawen impressed thejudges with a series of high—flying tricks seeing her edge out the usa's perris benegas with her second run. bennegas made the podium after finishing fourth in tokyo, while australia's natalya diehm claimed bronze — her country's first in freestyle bmx. adriana ruano oliva has won the first olympic gold medal in guatemala's history with victory in the women's trap at the chateauroux shooting centre. oliva began her career as a promising gymnast, but had to quit the sport after a spinal injury injury in 2011. she took up shooting making her olympic debut in tokyo, where she came 26th. but in paris she set a games record, with 45 hits out of 50. guatemala has only three olympic medals in total.

the dream is over for rafael nadal and carlos alcaraz, after their olympic medal hope in the men's doubles were ended by a quarter—final loss to american fourth seeds austin krajicek and rajeev ram. the spanish pair lost in straight sets, to two of the best doubles players in the game. nadal has been tight—lipped about his future but this could be the 14—time french open champion's farewell to paris. alcaraz stayed on course for a gold—medal clash with novak djokovic in singles earlier after both reached the quarter—finals. away from the olympics now, and steve mcclaren has been appointed head coach of the jamaica national men's team. he's signed a two—year deal after leaving the backroom staff of manchester united. the jamaica football federation says mcclaren's target is to guide the reggae boyz to the 2026 world cup finals. their only world cup appearance to date came at france 1998, when they were knocked out in the group stage. manchester city's preparations for the new season saw them lose on penalties to barcelona, but there may be some worries over the fitness of striker erling haaland.
2:54 am
jack grealish, who was left out of england's euros squad this summer, made it 2—2 on the night, in a match that was delayed by storms in florida. barca won the penalty shootout 4—1. erling haaland was taken off in the first half, but pep guardiola played down any serious injury concerns. he is disturbing something and doesn't feel comfortable and we don't want to take a risk. that's all. later we take this step to do training and play minutes. this easing is around the corner. but he has niggles, muscular, or whatever, we don't want to take a risk. because if what happens after, you know, we're going to lost him for three

weeks or a month, and that will be big problem. in the men's game, manchester united's new £59 million signing, leny yoro could be out action with a foot injury. yoro, signed from lille earlier this month, but got the injury in united's 2—1 defeat to arsenal in los angeles on saturday. the central defender came off after half an hour and was seen using crutches and wearing a protective boot on his left foot. the potential loss of yoro for a lengthy period would be a major blow for the club. just time to take a quick look at the medal table from the olympics before we go after day five of competition at paris 202a. china are now top of with nine golds, ahead of hosts france and japan who are both on eight. australia are next on seven, with great britain and south korea both on six, followed by the united states on five. the americans though still with plenty of time to catch up. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.
