marchand in the pool on day five of the paris olympics. the french home favourite again took the roof off the la defense arena with golds in both the 200m butterfly and the 200 metres breaststroke. he now has three at the games in paris. marchand is the first to complete the olympic 200 metre butterfly—breaststroke double, and he broke the olympic record in both. first he won the butterfly — and then became the first swimmer to win two individual golds in one night at the olympics since 1976 with gold in the breaststroke. pan zhanle of china won the 100m freestyle in a stunning world record time of 16.40 seconds, shaving an incredible 0.40 seconds off his previous mark set at the world championships in doha last february. australia's kyle chalmers finished a distant second, while david popovici had to settle for bronze. history as well for team usa's katie ledecky, who became the first woman to win gold medals at four different olympic games after retaining her title

in the women's 1500m freestyle with another commanding performance on wednesday night. she's regarded as the greatest distance swimmer of all time, and came home with an olympic record, ahead of france's anastasiya kirpichnikova and germany's isabel gose. it's ledecky�*s eighth career olympic title, moving her level for all—time swimming golds record. sweden's sarah sjostrom's late decision to enter the women's 100 metres freestyle paid off as she beat a top—quality field to clinch the gold medal. she edged out america's torri huske who took silver and and hong kong's bronze—winner siobhan haughey. japan continued their domination in the men's artistic gymnastics, with gold in the all—around, thanks to 20—year—old newcomer shinnosuke oka. the outsider got the better of countryman and tokyo champion daiko hashimoto and china's boheng zhang who took silver, and ruoteng xiao who claimed bronze. oka's win giving his nation a fourth—straight win in the event.

both triathlon races took place, after the mens event was postponed on tuesday because of poor water quality in the river seine. britain's alex yee looked as though he'd have to settle for silver in the men's race, just as he did in tokyo three years ago. but on the final lap of the 10k run, he overcame a14—second deficit to pass his great rival, new zealand's hayden wilde, and secure gold. great britain have won more triathlon medals than any other nation since becoming an olympic sport in 2000. the women were first to dive into the seine and their race was close until the final lap of the run, when france's cassandre beaugrand pulled clear of switzerland's julie derron with great britain's beth potter in third. derron says they had no concerns over the water quality. the swimming was fine during the race. we know that they took samples this morning. they take a little time to analyse so we don't know the results, obviously. and yeah, we'll trust the authorities and organisers that they keep us

safe, and so we had a safe race today. great britain's rowers failed to win a single gold in tokyo three years ago, bringing homejust two medals but they have a gold on the board with an incredible finish in the womens quadruple sculls. with 200 metres to go, they trailed the netherlands but pulled it back to take victory with the final stroke. lauren henry, lola anderson, hannah scott and georgina brayshaw won it by 0.15 of a second. they were seventh in tokyo. this is the first time team gb has won the men's or women's event. netherlands won the men's quad. to walk away with the gold this time, i don't think we all quite believe it. and well raced to the netherlands and germany. they had outstanding crews that were pushing us every day in training. i don't think it has sank in for all of us. we're over the moon. to come from seventh to first, i dunno,

hello there. humidity levels are beginning to increase now, and we're starting to see a thundery breakdown take place across england and wales, certainly after this recent hot spell. so, a thundery day on thursday, some good sunny spells around. yes, it will continue to feel very warm and humid. if you catch some of these torrential downpours, you really will know about it. we'll start thursday morning with torrential downpours through central, northern and eastern parts of england. then, into the afternoon as a sunshine comes out, we'll see further thunderstorms developing — east wales, the midlands, southern and eastern england. scotland and northern ireland not doing too badly — variable clouds, some sunshine and comfortable conditions there, ranging from 17—23 celsius, but another very warm one across england and wales, 25—29 celsius. as we head through thursday evening, those thunderstorms fade out across central and eastern england. it turns dry with clear spells,

but the breeze picks up with more cloud developing across western scotland and northern ireland. a little bit warmer across scotland and northern ireland to start friday than we've had of late, but it will be another muggy one for england and wales. start to see some changes into friday — this new area of low pressure will bring weather fronts, outbreaks of rain, strengthening winds to western scotland and northern ireland through the day, winds also picking up through the irish sea. large parts of eastern scotland, certainly england and wales will have another sunny afternoon with a few thunderstorms across eastern england — but it's going to be another warm one again, 28—29 celsius in the warmest spots in the southeast, low—20s further north and west. and it will be turning fresher here as this weather front starts to cross the country during saturday. eventually, it will reach east and southeastern england during saturday afternoon, clearing through, then allowing fresher air to move in across most areas, with sunny spells, variable cloud, scattered showers for western scotland and northern ireland. here, the high teens at best,

further south, it's cooler as well, 21—25 celsius. the fresher air will be across all areas as we move into part two of the weekend. low pressure starts to dominate, bringing our air source from the atlantic. not a bad day in store for sunday — a lot of sunshine through central, southern, and eastern areas, more cloud further north and west. we'll start to see more persistent rain moving into northern ireland and western scotland with strengthening winds. high teens celsius again in the north and west, low—to—mid—20s further south.
