they the national park authority say they will do everything they can to protect the new shoots. another day dominated by heat and humidity for many of us. it peaked in surrey at 30 degrees, but it is coming at a price now. that humidity is sparking off a few sharp and thundery downpours, so this was earlier on. and if you take a look at what has been happening over the last few hours, you can really see this rash of slow—moving, sharp and thundery downpours developing across south wales, moving through parts of 0xfordshire, and they are heading towards the london area as we speak. we do have a yellow weather warning out because the winds are light. some of those thunderstorms could really hang around for quite some time and we could see a couple of inches of rain, maybe more. there could be some issues as we go through the evening. the showers were gradually pushed eastwards overnight. for many of us, it's

actually a quite night. with clearing skies and a bit of cloud gathering into the far north—west. a bit more comfortable for some of us to get a good night's sleep. but maybe in the south—east, still 17 degrees as an overnight low. we start tomorrow with the signs of change, with low pressure starting to dominate the weather story to the far north and west. not for all of us. it will bring more cloud with a southerly wind across northern ireland and the western fringes of scotland will gradually start to see some rain. early morning showers in east anglia easing away and then rickets and sunshine and once again, some warmth across england and wales. it will be dry in eastern scotland, but that cloud and rain are sitting to the north—west, bring are sitting to the north—west, bring a fresh feel. the weather front sinks slowly south and east, it weakens all the time. not a bad weekend for most of us, but a bit more changeable and fresher as we move into next week. that might come as welcome news.

good evening, looking wrong. welcome along. we'll start with the olympic boxing competition, where the debate over the criteria for participation in women's sport has been reignited. the algerian imane khelif reached the world championship final last year, but was thrown out by the international boxing association, the iba, after failing an eligibility test. the ioc claim that was because of her increased levels of testosterone, but they say she has complied with their own regulations to compete in paris. and so to her opening fight in the last 16 this morning. it came in the 66kg welterweight division. khelif, in the red, who reached the quarterfinals at the tokyo games three years ago, landed two punches on her italian opponent angela carini. she conceded the fight after just 46 seconds, her coach saying that she had

was this convergence zone. look how most of the showers form along this is zone. some particularly nasty storms, for example, around the 0xfordshire area, and those downpours are capable of bringing a month's worth of rain over the space of a couple of hours. so we're quite likely to see one or two areas hit by some flash flooding and disruption. other areas to watch out for — the south downs, maybe some other areas of east anglia and south—east england to watch out for over the next few hours. one or two of those storms, as i say, very nasty indeed. through the remainder of the night, eventually those storms will calm down. we'll be left with dry weather conditions for most areas, with some clear spells around. still quite warm and humid, particularly across central and eastern england. we've got this slightly fresher air with us in parts of scotland and northern ireland as well. now, heading into friday, an area of low pressure is set to bring some rain in from the north—west, and that band of rain is going to very slowly push its way eastwards through friday night and on into saturday. so taking about 36 hours or so to cross the uk.
