this is bbc news, the headlines: the us is to deploy additional warships and fighter jets to the middle east to help defend israel from possible attacks by iran and its proxies. tensions remain high in the region over the assassinations of the hamas leader, ismail haniyeh in iran, as well as a key commander of hezbollah. a police station has been attacked and the property next to it set alight during clashes between rioters and police in sunderland. three injured officers were taken to hospital and eight people arrested. beer cans and stones were thrown at the officer. it's day 8 of the olympics in paris, there are 31 gold medals up for grabs, with the track and field women's 100 meters final and the swimming women's eight hundred meters freestyle, both on the table.

now on bbc news: talking business. hello and welcome to talking business. here is what is on the programme. crowdstrike's faulty software update. the largest it outage in history. thousands of flights were grounded, hospitals disrupted and broadcasters knocked off the air as millions of devices running microsoft windows crashed but as the costs ratcheted up into the billions of dollars we ask whether it is the price we pay by being so reliant on digital infrastructure. i will discuss that and more with a cyber influence and all there and i will talk to the boss of a global cyber security film, ncc group. plus what does it all say about our readiness for the

latest artificial intelligence breakthroughs? we will speak to one boss helping companies bring cutting—edge ai into the workplace. welcome to the programme. now, the great global it outage came not from cyber criminals but from a company trying to protect us from them. the previously inconspicuous crowdstrike became a household name overnight but for all the wrong reasons. we are but for all the wrong reasons. - are deeply sorry for the impact that we have caused to customers, to travellers, to anyone affected by this including our companies. let’s this including our companies. let's have a quick _ this including our companies. let's have a quick look _ this including our companies. let's have a quick look back— this including our companies. let's have a quick look back at - this including our companies. let's have a quick look back at what happened on that fateful friday. here is our tech reporter. the global it outage started in the early hours of the morning, us time. crowdstrike, one of the most trusted names in cyber security issued a minor update to its falcon centre software. it was meant to help the
11:33 am
security software sparked the latest hacking threats. but when it reached machines running windows, this happened. the blue screen of death. an update that was meant to protect computers, instead crashed them. across crowdstrike's nearly 30,000 customers, thousands upon thousands of machines were crashing. microsoft estimates that, in total, 8.5 million devices running windows were disabled. airlines were grounded. medical appointments were cancelled and even some supermarket checkouts stopped working. crowdstrike apologised and deployed a fix but, for machines that had crashed because of the bug, they had to be manually restarted in safe mode and
11:34 am
the dodgy update deleted. it was a time—consuming logistical nightmare for companies with thousands of computers distributed far and wide. crowdstrike has committed to do better, to check that updates, when they are released, don't contain problems. but the total cost of this global outage has been estimated to run into the billions of dollars. if lessons had been learned, they have certainly been learned the hard way. 0k, certainly been learned the hard way. ok, so let's talk about some of those costs. part of the reason theirs had such a big impact is because of the nature of crowdstrike customers. they include some of the
11:35 am
biggest companies and government agencies in the world. in the us alone, amongst the fortune 500 biggest companies, excluding microsoft, the outage is reported to have cost nearly five and have billion dollars. the banking and health care sector took the biggest hit, making up nearly 60% of the total. and it costjust six airlines, in the fortune 500, around $860 million. all of this adds up bill and just a small proportion will be covered by cyber insurance. about 10-20%, will be covered by cyber insurance. about 10—20%, according to some insurers who are behind all of this data. now, that numberjust covers america's biggest companies. it does not include the many small and medium—sized firms affected right around the world from australia to the uk. it means the total price tag globally is likely to be much higher. and that raises bigger questions about the relationship we all have between risk, cost and reward. when it comes to how we use technology. in computers fail, many businesses have little to fall back on given the threat posed by cyber attacks, wireframes not more resilient? this was not a malicious
11:36 am
act done by hackers seeking a ransom. it was caused by human error. but the outage highlights the huge impact that losing our tech can have on our lives and our livelihoods. to explore what it means for the future i caught up with a cyber expert and founder of the in security movement. it is good to have you on the programme and so here we are. the dust has settled but there is look at what happened. how surprised you were that one firm, crowdstrike, was able to cause so much chaos for so many businesses around the world. how much of a surprise was it? yes. for me i was not surprised at all. this has been a disaster waiting to happen. we are so reliant on technology. we are so interconnected and we are becoming more so—so the fact that this was a human error in this case and not
11:37 am
cyber attack, human error in this case and not cyberattack, really, it was human error in this case and not cyber attack, really, it was a good thing in some ways because this was a wake—up call for us to actually put in place practices that we need to be doing more of. h0??? put in place practices that we need to be doing more of.— put in place practices that we need to be doing more of. how would you assess the state _ to be doing more of. how would you assess the state of _ to be doing more of. how would you assess the state of our _ to be doing more of. how would you | assess the state of our preparedness when it comes to events like this? on one hand, like we said, this was a human error orfault but on one hand, like we said, this was a human error or fault but when on one hand, like we said, this was a human error orfault but when it comes to cyber attacks we know that risk is growing. h0??? comes to cyber attacks we know that risk is growing-— risk is growing. how ready are we? you know. — risk is growing. how ready are we? you know. we _ risk is growing. how ready are we? you know, we have _ risk is growing. how ready are we? you know, we have a _ risk is growing. how ready are we? you know, we have a huge - risk is growing. how ready are we? i you know, we have a huge spectrum risk is growing. how ready are we? - you know, we have a huge spectrum of companies out there from micro organisations to great big enterprises. some are more prepared than others and they are doing a much betterjob. but others, particularly smaller businesses and micro businesses which comprise so much of our economy, our economy, it isjust an
11:38 am
much of our economy, our economy, it is just an afterthought. in terms of security, in terms of crisis response plans. so we got to consider this. we've got to do what a fun scenario —based test so that we have got our playbooks, our responses in place. find we have got our playbooks, our responses in place.— we have got our playbooks, our responses in place. and at the same time, it strikes _ responses in place. and at the same time, it strikes me _ responses in place. and at the same time, it strikes me lots _ responses in place. and at the same time, it strikes me lots of _ responses in place. and at the same time, it strikes me lots of firms - time, it strikes me lots of firms are putting into new areas of tech and innovation thinking of things like cloud computing but also ai. and, if anything, that is opens these businesses to even greater risk and at the same time it doesn't feel like they're taking the necessary precautions to protect against the downside of these new technologies. against the downside of these new technologies-— against the downside of these new technolouies. ~ , , ., ., technologies. absolutely, and we are seeinr that technologies. absolutely, and we are seeing that in — technologies. absolutely, and we are seeing that in certain _ technologies. absolutely, and we are seeing that in certain countries - seeing that in certain countries more than others. as the technologies are evolving at speed undertow digital transformation is going on, we are not keeping up so we you must do better. it has to be top of mind for us because we cannot have more incidences like this. incidences like this are becoming the new normal and we have been saying this for years in the industry. saying this for years in the industry-— saying this for years in the indust .~ ., , ., , industry. what is the answer here? it is all industry. what is the answer here?

11:41 am
first is the sheer scale of the tender pink some of the initial reports we saw were something like 600,000 customers of crowdstrike being affected and, if you take it one of 2 degrees beyond that, millions. so the scale probably did, i think, surprise many. but what i think was most surprising and what shone a really hard light on the industry, and for businesses more broadly, was, actually, the complexity of being able to respond to something like this and actually being able to build a sort of resilience within business operations that you would need to be able to respond to what was a very good product rolled out to a bunch of customers. so that was the thing that surprised is the most. find of customers. so that was the thing that surprised is the most. and that was the role — that surprised is the most. and that was the role that _ that surprised is the most. and that was the role that the _ that surprised is the most. and that was the role that the cause - that surprised is the most. and that was the role that the cause so - that surprised is the most. and that| was the role that the cause so many problems. are allowed to so many machines at the same time, there was a problem with that and then the fix was a manual one. you had to go in and delete a bit of code.—

for those responsible. anyone involved in the disorder can expect to be dealt with robustly and that action has already begun. ten people have so far been arrested for a range of offences including violent disorder and burglary. a full investigation is now under way to identify those responsible. make no mistake, if you were involved last night, expect to be met with the full false of the law. i want to make it absolutely clear that the disorder, violence and damage which has occurred will not be tolerated. we also know the behaviour displayed in no way represents our friend the and welcoming region. we therefore want to deliver a further message direct to our communities. we are aware that criminal saw last night can attempt to drive division amongst us and we are committed to make sure that does not happen. we

people of sunderland are warm, friendly, hard—working and, most of all, proud. that is the reputation of this great place. this is a city of this great place. this is a city of compassion and community. culture and creativity. we will not let anybody stand in the way of these values. you only have to look at the regeneration, the money spent in this place. the fantastic bars and restaurants in the fact that, in any given friday night, particularly when last night, you would have had families out enjoying that. they were pushed into their homes by these people who wanted to riot. they will not define our reputation. they will not define our reputation. they were not defined our place in the world. we stand in solidarity with the grieving families and the people of southport. it is now vital that we bring calm back to our streets. make no mistake, those grieving families will take no comfort from the scenes that they saw in sunderland last night or anywhere else where violence has
