the us deploys additional warships and fighterjets to the middle east amid fears of escalation over the killing of hamas political chief, ismail haniyeh. here in the uk: police say anyone involved in last night's violence in sunderland will face the full force of the law. protests linked to the far—right are expected in other parts of england this weekend, following the killing of three girls in southport on monday. on day 8 of the paris olympics, australian duo of matthew ebden and john peers take gold in tennis men's doubles. all eyes are on the women's 100 metres final and the women's eight hundred metres freestyle final , both on the table later in the day. hello. washington has reiterated that

america's commitment to israel's defence remains *iron—clad' as it steps up its military presence in the middle east. the pentagon is sending additional warships and fighterjets as regional tension grows following the assassination of the hamas leader ismail haniyeh in tehran, and a hezbollah commander in beirut. iran's revolutionary guards have said mr haniyeh was killed by a short—range missile, launched from outside his room in a tehran guesthouse. it promised severe retalliation *at an appropriate time and place.* a short—range from tel aviv, our correspondent jenny hill has this update. the us has said that it will be sending an extra squadron well of fighterjets to the region, as well as warships, stating that america's commitment to israel's defence is, quote, *ironclad'. now, it's not the first time we've seen such a scenario. perhaps you'll remember that in april, iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles at israel.
2:02 pm
israel was able to intercept them, shoot them down with the help of the us and other allies. nevertheless, it is a reminder of just how dangerous and significant this moment is. i'm here in tel aviv on the beachfront, where it all looks and feels very relaxed, people getting on with their daily lives. you but people here are uneasy. area we know that iran has vowed, along with its proxies, revenge for two assassinations, that of the hamas political leader and a senior hezbollah commander. everyone knows something is likely to happen, but it's not clear what that retaliation will be, what kind of scale we'll see, or indeed when it might happen. so this is a country on high alert. a number of international airlines have suspended flights to and from israel, and ministers in the israeli cabinet were sent home this weekend with satellite phones for use in the event of an attack which throws out any kind of communications network.
2:03 pm
and as you know, there's urgent diplomacy going on right now to try to stop israel's war on gaza, which began following the october 7th attacks, from exploding into a region—wide conflict. and that's why the us intervention now is not only about providing help to israel militarily, but also focusing on ongoing efforts to try to diffuse the tension. the pentagon, a spokeswoman, said yesterday that they still think escalation is not an inevitability. america urging all parties in this to look at potential for a ceasefire. and it's worth remembering, of course, that there are two groups of people in all of this whose voices have become somewhat lost in the geopolitics, people in gaza, because don't forget, israel's war on gaza goes on. there were people killed there last night in a number of strikes. and those people know that right now a ceasefire looks very remote. and then there are the families of israeli hostages
2:04 pm
who are being held captive by hamas in gaza. still, they know that a chance of being reunited with their loved ones, it's greatly diminished right now. and one potentially positive note benjamin netanyahu, the israeli prime minister, has sanctioned an israeli delegation to travel to cairo, potentially as early as this evening for ongoing negotiations on a possible ceasefire. but as i say right now, tension is high. the world is watching the middle east and hoping that a crisis can be averted. correspondent in tel aviv. a clean—up operation is under way following a night of violence in sunderland after protests organised by the far—right turned into a riot. four police officers were injured, one of them seriously when officers said they faced *serious and sustained levels of violence*. ten arrests have been made so far. this morning, the home secretary

2:06 pm
ten people were arrested for offences including violent disorder and burglary. four police officers were hurt, one seriously. the disorder, violence and damage which has occurred will not be tolerated. we also know the behaviour displayed in no way represents our friendly and welcoming region. we, therefore, want to deliver a further message direct to our communities. we are aware that criminal actions we saw last night can attempt to drive division amongst us, and we are committed to make sure that does not happen. last night, scuffles also broke out between two groups of protesters outside a mosque in liverpool. police formed a barrier between those chanting pro—refugee slogans and others shouting *go home* in retaliation. council workers in sunderland had started the clean—up overnight, but a small army of people who live here turned out to help finish thejob. people from every community, from the bangladeshi community, from international students, people coming together to clean

up the shards of hate and build a better future together. that*s sunderland. there are, of course, still signs of what happened here last night, but otherwise, sunderland is getting back to normal. the police have said, however, that they will deal with anybody a who gets involved in this kind of violence robustly. let*s stay on this story and look at it from another perspective. rumours spread like wildfire across the social media platform x, formerly known as twitter, after monday*s attack on a children*s holiday dance class. accounts speculated about the attacker*s ethnicity and a false name attributed to the 17—year—old attacker went viral. at bbc news, we*re not repeating the false name to avoid spreading misinformation further. the police themselves have pointed to disinformation online as playing a part in the violence. but how do all these falsehoods spread and who benefits? let*s speak to drjon roozenbeek, a lecture in psychology and security at the university of cambridge
