3:30 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines: windows smashed, a bin set on fire, as clashes erupt in rotherham outside a hotel believed to be housing asylum seekers. it's the latest in a series of riots across the country. ministers warn rioters they'll face tough action. those people who have been involved in this disorder over the last few days will be found by the police, will be arrested, will be taken through the courts. we want to make it very clear, there are penalties, there are consequences. israel's air force strikes targets in southern lebanon, after hezbollah fired a barrage of rockets across the border. the israeli military says most of the rockets were intercepted. several countries urge their nationals to leave lebanon, as fears grow of a wider conflict in the middle east. iran has vowed "severe" retaliation against israel, retaliation against israel.
3:31 pm
ijust want i just want to take you straight to some live images from the scene in rotherham in south yorkshire. this is a scene where protesters have been gathering. they have been targeting a hotel there, where they believe that it has been used to house asylum seekers. the picture is breaking up a little bit of air but you should be able to see the police who are gathered there now and we understand that at least one injured officer in riot was carried away there and we know that earlier rioters in masks through lengths of wood and sprayed fire is at police officers outside that hotel and that is a holiday inn express in rotherham, and protesters have been chanting, it gets them out, as well
3:32 pm
as windows and doors being smashed in, a bin was set alight outside. —— sprayed fire extinguishers. you can see many police officers with riot shields separating the people there, the protesters from behind them, and we understand there were demonstrators from the group stand up demonstrators from the group stand up to racism and they work there but they have left the area, but hundreds of people who work there who are opposing the asylum seekers being held are still there. this is the scene and as i said, the picture is breaking up slightly but you can get a sense of what the scene is there. there are videos on social media, again, as i mentioned earlier, they have not been verified by the bbc but there are videos that appear to show demonstrators storming into the hotel and there are reports of a fire inside though as i said, what we have been able to
3:33 pm
verify is that a bin was set alight outside the building. this is the latest in a series of unrest and disturbances that have, in some cases, become violent, as you have been hearing in the news. we have been hearing in the news. we have been bringing you the updates on a series of demonstrations in cities across england and in northern ireland. for example, just to give you an idea of what greater manchester police are saying, they say a section 3a dispersal notice has been authorised covering the area of bolton until ten o'clock on sunday night because they are expecting a protest there later. this is the latest in what has been a series of days of pockets of unrest, and police had been anticipating unrest in rotherham and they are expecting a protest to be
3:34 pm
taking place in bolton later. merseyside police have introduced to section 60 orders which give officers greater stop and search powers, covering both liverpool and southport, and you may have seen, if you watched the news, images yesterday of the disruption, the disturbances, rather, in liverpool where there were demonstrations and there were actually protests and counter protests taking place in liverpool. we seem to have lost the link there but that was the scene live in rotherham, in south yorkshire, where a hotel has been targeted by demonstrators and rioting seems to have continued there but there are riot police keeping things in check. there will be more on this throughout the day but we also have information on the bbc news website as well so you will be able to find out more on that.

3:42 pm
ready to compete on a stage like the olympic games. it's such an important system, isn't it? for bringing up people from all over america but, as we have seen withjulien alfred, from all over the world. absolutely. and i think even in the united states, people fail to recognise that our system benefits our athletes globally so we could not be more proud to contribute as a country to the development of these athletes and the collegiate system plays such an important role in that. how much pressure is there, do you think, on team usa to get the job done in track and field, given the job in the pool was a bit disappointing this year? you know, last night, swimming had an amazing night. we are focused on our game plan. we're here to execute. we have 47 governing bodies with amazing athletes here, so we're really going to step up and do the best that we can. and we are expecting some amazing performances for our athletes and we could not be more proud of melissa and sha'carri last night, even in the 100, and we are looking for great athletes tonight. tell me about your own work in track and field, because you very much want to focus, not only on the sport, but also on diversity and inclusion.
3:43 pm
what does diversity and inclusion look like in the us track and field team? yes, for us, athletically, administratively, with our programmes, we are very intentional about diversity and inclusion. we think it has been the key to our success commercially and on the field of play but most importantly, when we want to have a cultural impact, it is important that we have people with different points of view on our team so we could not be more excited about that but it has been, you know, something we have been focused on as an organisation for the last 12—15 years. you've got la coming up in 2028. how big is that going to be for the us track and field athletes? and also, what kind of unique pressures will that bring on you, do you think, over the next four years? yeah, it is amazing to see everything it takes to execute an event of this magnitude. we were honoured to host the world championships at eugene a couple of years ago and so, for us, learning everything that we can. i know the athletes will be excited to compete on home soil, and so it adds another element of pressure but, you know, the athletes will be great
3:44 pm
there to perform in front of the home crowd. some breaking news from the boxing and that is that one of the athletes of the olympic refugee team, cindy ngamba, she has guaranteed the olympic refugee team their first medal in history for the olympic boxing and she will at that very least when a bronze and that is the first time the olympic refugee team has won a medal and she is based in britain, that is where he trains, but she was born in cameroon stop great news for her and great news for the refugee olympic team. athletics is not the only sports making headlines. kayak cross has been described as "brutal", "full contact", "high—octane fun". today, heats are under way in a dynamic new event in the olympic canoe slalom series — kayak cross. like the individual events, there are still gates to navigate. speed, of course, is essential.
3:45 pm
but in kayak cross, all courtesies are left on the starting line. because as soon as the race is on, the battle begins — boats colliding down the field towards the finish. the only thing that's certain is that in this sport, anything could happen. i will let you hear from someone who knows a bit about that sport in a moment but to bring you some breaking news on the kayak cross, we are hearing that team gb'sjoseph clark has qualified on heat one and team gb'sjoseph burgess was disqualified on heat for. —— heat four. i have spoken to ben haylett, an olympic reserve for the kayak cross gb team, and he told us everything we need to know about this exciting sport. kayak cross is a two—phased sport, so we have a time trial which is a straight run down the course, negotiating the gates, which puts you into the seeding for the next round, the second phase. the second phase is entirely head—to—head. we start off with round one,
3:46 pm
repechage, heats, quarters, semis and finals, and you build your way through the round. it is full—contact, high—octane, as you said, and it's "anything goes" apart from head contact, pretty much. what do you mean by full—contact? explain that. it is plastic boats, you can ram into each other with the boats, off the ramp at the start, it is a three—and—a—half, four—metre metre drop into the river, it is full—contact, all—in, people everywhere. i mean, it sounds super exciting but also quite stressful for the athletes. do they like it? yes, they do, a lot of people like it. it is very egotistical, it is very cut and dry, whoever crosses the line first is the winner. whereas in slalom it is more a of a time trial—based sport. what exactly is the eskimo roll that i have been reading about? there is a roll zone halfway down the run in paris. you'll see them come under that first bridge and they have to throw themselves in under the barrier. it is compulsory, everyone has to do it, and that is one
3:47 pm
of the major parts of the racing. what kind of an impact do you think kayak cross is going to have on these events generally at the olympics? because it sounds like something that the olympics haven't really seen before. it is something completely new, especially on the water. we have seen it in bmx and even snowboard cross racing, but it is super exciting to have it on the water in front of 12,000 people. i hope people can expect to see some very thrilling, very exciting racing. we also have breaking news in the last few minutes and this is with regards to team gb's and buck rutter who has won the silver medal in a dramatic women's skeet shooting final, just three weeks after giving birth to her child —— amanda rutte. it was dramatic because she contested one of the judgments that she did not hit the target with one harbour shots but the judges found
3:48 pm
she hadn't but she contested it and said she had but in the end she has one the silver medal. that is another good day for team gb there. that's medal for amanda another good day for team gb there. that's medalfor amanda rutte. volunteers are crucial for the success of any olympics games and there are 16,000 of them working at the olympics and paralympics in paris. one of the british contingent is kerry linder. we asked her why she is so keen to volunteer. i started in 2012 and got the bug then and was living close to london and wanted to help the 2012 olympics be the best it could be. i ended upjoining a choir and made some amazing friendships from that. i kind of got the volunteering bug, so i volunteered in lots of stuff. this is my third olympics, i went out to rio as well as a uk volunteerthere,
3:49 pm
and now i am here in paris with a large contingent, i have to say, of uk volunteers. a large contingent of volunteers and also a large contingent of fans and n every event you see lots of fun supporting team gb as well as in other events as well and let me take you to the medal table briefly before i have another thing for it and we have china at the top of the medals table is and the united states is second, france is bird and team gb is still there in fifth position and it medals table doesn't change much but you can see china have two more golds since we spoke last and they are doing very well, as is france, the host nation. that is the latest from me here in paris, luxmy gopal, but i will bring you the latest air in france this evening. the latest air in france this evening-— the latest air in france this evenina. . ~' q evening. thank you, maryam. as ma am evening. thank you, maryam. as maryam said. — evening. thank you, maryam. as maryam said, we _ evening. thank you, maryam. as maryam said, we will— evening. thank you, maryam. as maryam said, we will have - evening. thank you, maryam. as| maryam said, we will have plenty more on the olympics in paris later
3:50 pm
but ijust want more on the olympics in paris later but i just want to show you images from the scene recently in rotherham. these were images from just a few moments a go, a little while ago, and this is outside a hotel in rotherham in south yorkshire. protesters have been gathering outside the building and chanting, gets them out, and we are having reports of windows and doors being smashed at the hotel and a bin being smashed at the hotel and a bin being set alight outside and a reporter on the ground in one room in the last hour or so has seen rioters get inside the hotel and i think we can show you live pictures now. there we go, we are able to show you the scene live in rotherham at the moment outside that holiday inn express in rotherham. we have been getting reports of police
3:51 pm
officers being repeatedly attacked and having wooden fence panels thrown at them, and the crowd outside forced its way into the building, having smashed up some of the doors. their work stand up to racism demonstrators there earlier but they have left the area and as i say, some of the chanting going on tjy say, some of the chanting going on by people there were, gets them out, outside the building as police officers with riot shields surrounded the building and have been trying to push people back. you are seeing it live images now and if you look on our bbc news website you will be able to see some pictures from the past half an hour or so, which shows you what to see it was like a bit earlier and that is on our live page, because there were police there are crowded together,
3:52 pm
riot police, to try to push the crowd back and we have had a statement from the holiday inn chain, a short statement from iht, the company that owns the holiday inn express chain and they haven't said much other than to say in a statement that, the safety and security of our guests and colleagues is always our priority. we will show you some images from a bit earlier now. we will return to the live pictures a bit later. but we are just showing you a mix of lectures from the seen live and from a bit earlier in rotherham —— a mix of pictures. one of our reporters there said that earlier both pro and anti immigration demonstrators gathered outside their before the pro—immigration demonstrators left. we are also seeing some images now that have come in from people, people have been sending footage they have taken themselves on their
3:53 pm
phone at the scene there. protesters were throwing things at the hotel and the road outside the hotel was blocked by a group of people who have said they opposed asylum seekers. we haven't got any confirmation as to whether there are any asylum seekers in this hotel but thatis any asylum seekers in this hotel but that is something that has not been confirmed, but it was believed that it had been used to house asylum seekers but as for what the situation is now, that has not been clarified. earlier on, so, as often is the case, things change quite dramatically at the scene because earlier today, dramatically at the scene because earliertoday, it dramatically at the scene because earlier today, it had started peacefully with just the two opposing groups protesting and shouting at each other, and then the stand up to racism demonstrators left the area but hundreds of people remained and that is when the
3:54 pm
atmosphere changed and glass bottles started to be thrown at police and as i said, wooden fence panel started to be thrown and we know there have been injured police officers, including one who had to be taken away from the area, and a police officer in riot gear had to be taken in a way as one of the injured police. —— taken away. to reiterate, this is the scene in rotherham we also know there are other areas of unrest, for example, in middlesbrough, there are some protesters who have broken free of the march that has been taking place there and have thrown items at officers, including pieces of slate, vapes and bottles and that has led to two arrests and people there in
3:55 pm
middlesbrough are asking people to avoid the town centre so that is the situation in middlesbrough where there is also unrest at the moment, but what you are looking at now are images in rotherham, a combination of images that have been sent in by people who have taken them themselves on their phone and some from our crew on the ground. and groups of individuals who were wearing balaclavas could be seen at the windows as the crowd tried to force its way in. and just to give you a broader picture of what is happening, there are protests taking place notjust in rotherham and middlesbrough but also in bolton and southport as well, and southport is of course where that attack happened last monday where three little girls were killed and we know, you may remember, we saw violent scenes on
3:56 pm
tuesday night with protesters in southport there and in the ensuing days there have been protests in many cases turning violent in cities in england and in northern ireland, in england and in northern ireland, in belfast, in northern ireland, with particular violent scenes in sunderland a couple of nights a go. this protest in rotherham, which has now become a little bit more violent thanit now become a little bit more violent than it had been earlier, this was expected by police and police had been preparing for the protest in middlesbrough as well. and police leaders said they had extra officers ready and prepared to be deployed for areas of unrest. we also heard the home secretary, yvette cooper, saying that the police had all
3:57 pm
resources necessary to be able to deal with such unrest. that was the statement that the home secretary, yvette cooper, made yesterday and that was also echoed by the prime minister, keir starmer, and in terms of the police resources, we have seen huge numbers of police in riot gear and police dogs deployed to protest like this, the latest one here being in rotherham. one of the reports we had heard was about a fire at that hotel being caused, but as i said, at the time, that has not been verified but what we do know is that objects outside had been set on fire, including a bin. just to bring you up—to—date on the police powers that are in place and the extra
3:58 pm
measures that have been brought in in response to this action, in bolton, where protest is also taking place, greater manchester police had issued a dispersal notice called a section 3a and that is due to last until ten o'clock tonight and that means officers will have extra powers to deal with anyone caught causing anti—social behaviour, that is what greater manchester police said in a statement. they went on to say that officers who see anyone causing or being very likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress will be able to order them to leave immediately. so that is the dispersal notice in place in bolton, lasting until ten o'clock tonight, and that is just one of the many places where police have put in extra measures to be able to deal
3:59 pm
with the protests taking place, some of which have turned into more violent unrest. if you are just joining us, what you are seeing now are images from rotherham in south yorkshire, where protesters gathered at the holiday inn express hotel. they have been people remaining in taking part in the writing, throwing things at that building, at the holiday inn express there, leading to some injuries with one police officer being injured.
4:00 pm
live from london, this is bbc news. police officers battle to contain a riot at a rotherham hotel believed to be housing asylum seekers. those people who have been involved in this disorder over the last few days will be found by the police, will be arrested, will be taken through the courts. israel strikes targets in southern lebanon, after hezbollah fires a barrage of rockets across the border. and it's day nine of the olympics — with djokovic going head—to—head with alcaraz in the men's tennis final. we'll bring you the latest from paris. hello and welcome. we start here in the uk, where there have been more violent far right protests in england. these are the latest pictures from rotherham in yorkshire.
