as far—right rioters storm 3 hotel in rotherham housing asylum seekers. in southern england — hundreds of people are gathering on weymouth seafront — with police creating a wall between opposing crowds. and in middlesbrough — crowds have broken through a police line and attacked officers. in bolton — an emergency order is in place to prevent people from covering theirfaces — with many hidden behind balaclavas. the prime minister says he'll do whatever it takes to end the violence. i want you to know that this violent mob do not represent our country and we will bring them to justice. these are the scenes live in rotherham — we'll have the latest from our correspondents on the ground and analysis of what's going on.
7:01 pm
hello, i'm martine croxall. we start with our breaking news from the uk — where there have been more violent far right protests in england. since saturday night — police have made 147 arrests — and that number is expected to rise. this is the scene in rotherham at the moment. in the south yorkshire in the north of england. as we can see, it is quieter than it has been but the emergency services still in evidence on the streets, hundreds of anti—immigration protesters had earlier surrendered a hotel, the holiday inn express, some people lit a fire and smashed windows and doors and managed to get inside the building where asylum seekers have been staying. police eventually surrounded the hotel. they were

right control officers, they managed to push the crowds back, but as you can see from those pictures, there is still that presence and we are told that the scene remains tense in rotherham. let's get more on how this unfolded — our correspondent navtej johal has this report from rotherham. anger, violence, destruction. these chaotic scenes are unlike any you would expect on a sunny summer afternoon. at times today rotherham has felt lawless. it began this morning with a group of antiracism protesters outside the hotel on the outskirts of this hotel where it is believed that asylum seekers are being housed, but they were quickly outnumbered by a larger group of anti—immigration protesters, many of them angry at the idea of asylum seekers living in taxpayer funded hotel rooms. as the afternoon wore on chants

were not the only thing being hurled at the police or th building. in the last half an hour things appeared to turn ugly, windows smashed across the hotel, hundreds of people in the streets, police attacked, objects thrown at them including fence panels pulled out from around the hotel, and things appear to be turning increasingly nasty. not long after the protesters managed to get in, the building was set alight. the company that owns the holiday inn express chain wouldn't confirm if asylum seekers were still living at the hotel and said the safety and security of our colleagues and guests is always the priority. earlier this week the prime minister and home secretary met with police chiefs ahead of planned demonstrations this week. in the past hour the prime minister reacted to the scenes in rotherham. i utterly condemn the far right thuggery we have seen this weekend. be in no doubt, those that have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law.
7:04 pm
the police will be making arrests, individuals will be held on remand, charges will follow and convictions will follow. i guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder either directly or those whipping up this online and then running away themselves. at least one police officer has been injured here today and much of the violence we have seen this week has affected those tasked with protecting the public. let's speak to our reporter oli constable in rotherham. still a big police presence, what is the atmosphere like? it

officers have given us a warning to take a few steps back because of items still being thrown and the people we can see in front of us are predominantly younger people. were they here for the protest earlier? we don't know. certainly here for the violence that followed. that was a distinction — the violence that followed. that was a distinction the _ the violence that followed. that was a distinction the prime _ the violence that followed. that was a distinction the prime minister - a distinction the prime minister made, he said it was not a protest but violence and he said he is very clear that this is targeting people because of the colour of their skin than there was no way to legitimise the sword around britain's streets. can you tell us what it is that is being thrown? it can you tell us what it is that is being thrown?— can you tell us what it is that is being thrown? it is a mixture of items. being thrown? it is a mixture of item cans _ being thrown? it is a mixture of items. cans that _ being thrown? it is a mixture of items. cans that have _ being thrown? it is a mixture of items. cans that have been - being thrown? it is a mixture of items. cans that have been left| items. cans that have been left here, i can show you some items on the floor, there is a golf ball that is one of the items that has been thrown, but a lot of the items are just stones and things found in people's gardens. there was a sign

here at one point which has since been removed and thrown. we saw when they didn't manage to get into the hotel earlier, the initial trouble that flared, they then use that as an opportunity to gather ammunition, they grabbed chairs and fire extinguishers which were turned on police and sprayed towards them. it really is the case they can grab whatever they can, destroyed lamp posts and post boxes, items used as weapons. irate posts and post boxes, items used as wea ons. ~ ., posts and post boxes, items used as weaons. ~ ., ., ., ~ posts and post boxes, items used as wea *0ns. . ., ., ., " . ., weapons. we have to make it clear that what began _ weapons. we have to make it clear that what began as _ weapons. we have to make it clear that what began as a _ weapons. we have to make it clear that what began as a protest - weapons. we have to make it clear that what began as a protest in - that what began as a protest in rotherham turned into riots and the disorder and violence, and as you say, local people don't even necessarily recognise some of those people out on the streets, but how you police that is very different. if you have a protest and it is peaceful you may have a police presence but this is something of

another order of magnitude. it is exactl . another order of magnitude. it is exactly. initially _ anotherorderof magnitude. it 3 exactly. initially you could describe the atmosphere is tense with counter protests although in a smaller number to other protesters, but they saw that as an opportunity to make their voices heard, chanting between the groups, but those groups soon fled and then it was the violent group that remained. whatever side they are on i don't know, theyjust seem to be intent on causing trouble and the police officers here have spent much of their afternoon trying to bring some kind of order to it. when the windows were being smashed they were trying to protect people inside. items were taken from inside and set alight had thrown back into the building. we know it has people currently inside it and we have seen them from their top floor windows looking towards us. we know that people are in there and people here still intent on causing trouble setting fire to items and throwing them through the windows. whether
7:10 pm
they were trying to set fire to the hotel i can't say but it seems to me these people are just intent on causing trouble. we can see behind the police line at the moment looking towards us with fence posts, they are wearing balaclavas and we have seen this throughout the afternoon. it is used as an opportunity to hit the shields of the police officers who are all here with their weapons as well. somebody we saw a lawyer who managed to get hold of a button from the police that they then turned on the officers themselves. it looks relatively — officers themselves. it looks relatively calm _ officers themselves. it looks relatively calm and - officers themselves. it looks relatively calm and we - officers themselves. it looks relatively calm and we have | officers themselves. it looks . relatively calm and we have just seen what looks like some sort of fence posts being thrown.- fence posts being thrown. that's exactly what _ fence posts being thrown. that's exactly what it _ fence posts being thrown. that's exactly what it is, _ fence posts being thrown. that's exactly what it is, rocks - fence posts being thrown. that's exactly what it is, rocks and - fence posts being thrown. that's. exactly what it is, rocks and other things being thrown towards officers. the police are moving in. what has caused the police to move in? , ., what has caused the police to move in? ,~ ,

7:12 pm
more officers here trying to push that group back further and further down the road, and every opportunity they get to make an advancement, to push those people back, they are taking every opportunity. you can see durham police, south and west yorkshire, brought in as well, so police forces from across the country helping out. just catching u . country helping out. just catching u- on country helping out. just catching up on some _ country helping out. just catching up on some of— country helping out. just catching up on some of the _ country helping out. just catching up on some of the details - country helping out. just catching up on some of the details here, | country helping out. just catching i up on some of the details here, and south yorkshire police say at least ten officers were injured earlier in what they described as deplorable acts of violence in that hotel you have just shown us. you can see clearly the rectangular white building, one officer was left unconscious after a head injury according to the constabulary, with other officers suffering suspected broken bones including a fractured elbow, so these projectiles that are being thrown, they look like bits of wood and fence panels and posts but they are doing damage to those officers deployed. the statement
7:13 pm
from south yorkshire police say we absolutely condemn the scenes of disorder was a total of around 700 people in attendance on manvers way earlier. a bin was set alight causing a fire and missiles including glass bottles and beer cans thrown at our officers. so far there have been no reports of any of there have been no reports of any of the hotel staff or residents in the hotel being injured in any of this disorder. many of those in the crowd chanting, get them out, as they smashed windows at bat holiday inn express. how far is it from the core than? it is hard to tell from the pictures we are seeing. you showed us the distance the police have managed to make up. how far is it and how long has it taken them to re—establish that gap? i’d and how long has it taken them to re-establish that gap?— re-establish that gap? i'd say it is about 300 yards _

re-establish that gap? i'd say it is about 300 yards they _ re-establish that gap? i'd say it is about 300 yards they have - re-establish that gap? i'd say it is i about 300 yards they have managed re-establish that gap? i'd say it is - about 300 yards they have managed to push people back in this particular way. more items being thrown pastors, so they have managed to make 300, coming up to 350 yards or so, part of the grass on the left—hand side seems to have been set on fire in the police moved in to try and stamp it out. so that kind of distance has taken a considerable amount of time and i have been here since 3:30pm when the disorder was still happening at the base of the hotel with windows being smashed. that seems now like such a long time ago, the police at every opportunity have made that distance up. on the other side of manvers way, heading north, so southbound is virtually empty. they closed the road very early on to stop cars going down but those groups of people who were gathering slowly started to disperse as well and using parts of the housing estate to
7:15 pm
run on either side of manvers way, the use that as an opportunity to flank on police and get the other side of the court in which many managed to do. this seems to be where the majority of people are now and that the core than you can tell they are consular are trying to push people back, but on the right—hand side where we are, people are trying to flank brown through the woodland that runs alongside this main road, so the police constantly having to be on their toes and work out where people are. we have had a helicopter up people are. we have had a helicopter up all day, two helicopters at times to try and provide information to the officers, it is obviously a buy very dynamic situation and for so many people here it has been nonstop in a very dangerous position. for --eole in a very dangerous position. for people who don't know what rotherham is in south yorkshire in the north of england, and it is a population of england, and it is a population of about 100,000 people, so this is
7:16 pm
quite a large town but thankfully a localised problem that the police are having to contend with. as far as you know what a residents in other parts of the town doing? to what extent are they staying at home to keep out of the way?— what extent are they staying at home to keep out of the way? rotherham is a really interesting _ to keep out of the way? rotherham is a really interesting town _ to keep out of the way? rotherham is a really interesting town in _ to keep out of the way? rotherham is a really interesting town in south - a really interesting town in south yorkshire. many years ago it had incidents with child sexual exploitation, groups of predominantly asian men who were targeting white women and girls in the town, so rotherham seems to have already had the behaviour and subsequent trials with people being sent to jail for a long subsequent trials with people being sent to jailfor a long time because of that. what we know and rotherham is that people are very proud to be from their area, many people in south yorkshire are proud to be from where they live, so these kinds of scenes we are seeing with people on the street throwing items that
7:17 pm
police will definitely upset people, the law—abiding people who are proud to say they are from these areas, they will be very disappointed to see these kinds of scenes where police on the street are being attacked by people throwing anything they can get their hands on, and like we said before people have been injured. many police officers have been injured but members of the public are not involved in the violence have been injured as well. might seem like a rather anodyne thing to say, but this is the summer, the weather is good, the days are still quite long, it is the summer holidays. these were some of the conditions that we saw in 2011 when the riots broke out then, i was on air the when the riots broke out then, i was on airthe night when the riots broke out then, i was on air the night that all began, and it began in london and spread to other parts of the country, and there was looting as well as

rioting. to what extent are the police saying that those conditions, of it being the summer and of being good weather almost encourage people to come out and stay out on the in this way? b. to come out and stay out on the in this wa ? * ., ., to come out and stay out on the in thiswa ?* ., ., . to come out and stay out on the in thiswa? ., ., . , this way? a lot of police officers sa pc this way? a lot of police officers say pc rain _ this way? a lot of police officers say pc rain is — this way? a lot of police officers say pc rain is their— this way? a lot of police officers say pc rain is their best - this way? a lot of police officers say pc rain is their best friend . say pc rain is their best friend because when it does rain people are definitely not wanting to stand out in the rain and cause trouble so when that happens... sorry, a police officer is just advising us to step back. definitely the good weather, the warm weather and the long nights like you say. it is bright, it is the weekend, there seems to be a perfect opportunity for people to spend their time out in the streets. we have seen lots of people with cans of lager they are drinking and before they finish they threw the remnants towards officers so
7:19 pm
definitely that combination has really hampered policing efforts, especially as we have seen it in other parts of the area and as it has started to rain it has started to disperse people. fiat; has started to rain it has started to disperse people.— has started to rain it has started to disperse people. stay with us if ou well, to disperse people. stay with us if you well. but _ to disperse people. stay with us if you well, but we _ to disperse people. stay with us if you well, but we will— to disperse people. stay with us if you well, but we will give - to disperse people. stay with us if you well, but we will give you - to disperse people. stay with us if you well, but we will give you a i to disperse people. stay with us if| you well, but we will give you a bit of a break because you have been talking to us for a very long time and i want you to make sure you are in the right place given what is happening in front of you, but we will speak to our reporter and rotherham again any moment. with me is our reporter chi chi izundu. he has been following some of the other developments at these protests and the riots that they have been turning into. we have been focusing on rotherham because people are still out on the streets and we have seen a hefty police presence, but middlesbrough has also been a focus. indeed, and police seem to be the target of a lot of people's anger. in middlesbrough we have seen cars and homes around the town centre
7:20 pm
also being targeted with windows smashed and some cars burned out on the streets. footage of a wheelie bin set on fire and pushed into police. so far cleveland police, the local police force in middlesbrough have said they have arrested nine people so far, and people are being advised to stay away from the area as police try to regain control, with the violence and rioting going on, but i must point out not all protests today have been violent. in aldershot there seem to be quite a peaceful one that went ahead, no violence sparked off, but as you say, around the uk there have been pockets of unrest. bud say, around the uk there have been pockets of unrest.— say, around the uk there have been pockets of unrest. and what about in bolton as well— pockets of unrest. and what about in bolton as well because _ pockets of unrest. and what about in bolton as well because there - pockets of unrest. and what about in bolton as well because there was - pockets of unrest. and what about in bolton as well because there was a l bolton as well because there was a protest and a counter protest that came out onto the streets? indeed, two to 300 — came out onto the streets? indeed, two to 300 people _ came out onto the streets? indeed, two to 300 people came _ came out onto the streets? indeed, two to 300 people came crashing i two to 300 people came crashing together, a flashpoint at one point,

a lot of facemasks and balaclavas. police seem to be a bit of a target and they tried to come between the two protest groups to stop any kind of serious violence occurring. both groups met in another street but they were kept apart by police lines. again, projectile stone, bottles and cans and the bricks and the broken tiles and in this case some fireworks were thrown at police and the other protesters. greater manchester police say they have increased their police presence in the area. they have also issued what is known as a section 60 a order which means they can ask people to remove these balaclavas and face coverings, you're not allowed to wear them in that area and the police can ask you to remove them so you cannot disguise or conceal your appearance. section 60 has also been issued which gives people extra powers to stop and search people.

a cloudy start for many the sunday but as the day continued sunshine came through and this is richmond upon thames but it could be almost anywhere across parts of england and wales and some of eastern scotland as well. threatening skies further north and west and as you can see in north berwick a sign that rain is just around the corner and in fact not only rain but strengthening winds, costs continuing to push into northern ireland in western scotland through the night tonight. i'll tied into this area of low pressure and thatis into this area of low pressure and that is going to linger first thing on monday morning. that means the rain could be quite heavy particularly across western scotla nd, particularly across western scotland, bright yellow and green denoting the intensity of the rainfall. we could see 2—3 inches of rain. rain always more showery in nature across eastern scotland and quite a narrow band but intense rain moving through northern ireland.

some drizzle and west facing coasts but at the same time the cloud will tend to thin on the break to central and eastern england. that will continue to be the case as we go through the day but with a south—westerly when tapping into very warm air from the near continent, it will turn increasingly more humid as we go through the afternoon. the temperature may peak across eastern england as high as 26. cooler and fresher further north and west as the frontal system continues to move its way steadily eastwards. it willjust ease to a narrow intense band of rain through the night but because it has been so warm and humid through the day could be a more uncomfortable night for getting a good night sleep and the front will still be there first thing on tuesday morning. good news for gardeners, welcome rain through lincolnshire and south—east england, not much but hopefully enough to keep the plants happy. brighter conditions following behind, if you
