the american has added olympic gold to his world title, but he only won by five thousands of a second in a race that had a blanket finish in the stade de france. afterfailing to come first in either his heat or the semi final, lyles was last after 30 metres but chased down jamaica's kishane thompson to beat him right on the line. that was the first time he had been ahead in any of his three races in paris, while all 8 runners finished within point 1—2 of lyles* winning time of 9.79, a personal best for him and a first olympic gold. another american fred kerley claimed the bronze. everybody in the field, to be honest, came out knowing that they could win this race. and, you know, that's the mindset that we have to have. you know, iron sharpens iron of course. and when i saw my name, i was like, i didn't do this against a slow crowd or a field. i did this against the best of the best on the biggest stage, with the biggest pressure.
12:47 am
gosh, there it is." and i wasn't even entered in the 100 in 2021. so that was, you know, here i am, first olympics in the hundred. you know, going around now the olympic champion and you know having that title of notjust at world championships but at the olympics of world's fastest man. britain didn't have any runners in that final, but they will in the women's 800 metres. keely hodgkinson appears to be the athlete to beat, winning her semi in the quickest time of the three races. current world champion mary moraa of kenya is also through to monday's final. there'll be a british contender in the men's 1500 metres final as well. world championjosh kerr will likely renew his rivalry with defending olympic champion jakob ingebritsen after both made it through the same semi final. ukraine's yaroslava mahukhich has added the olypmic high jump gold to the world record she broke in the same city less than a month ago. it also completes her trophy cabinet as she cleared two meters to beat australia's nicola olyslagers having had fewer failures.

mahuchikh fled her home in dnipro after russia's invasion of ukraine two years ago, but has won all of her global titles since. mahuchikh's gold is ukraine's second in as many days after the women's foil team claimed the title on saturday. two of the three that beat south korea to the gold were welcomed at the ukrainian embassy in paris on sunday. olga kharlan, who's also won an individual bronze and got the winning touch in the team event and olena kravatska dedicated their success to those fighting back home. it's tough on the heart and the soul. but we're here for all ukrainians. ukraine. we represent our country and we're so proud of that and we honourand, uh, all these medals we're presenting to ukraine and dedicated to our troops who are defending us.

novak djokovic has won the one remaining major title that was missing from his collection. he's become just the fifth player to complete the "golden slam" of winning all four major titles and an olympic gold medal in singles, after a stunning win over carlos alcaraz at roland garros. djokovic went into this match having lost the wimbledon final to alcarazjust last month, but at 37 found the extra gear in two tie breaks to win serbia's second gold in paris, one he's waited 16 years to win and which he greeted with floods of tears. now, at age 37, you know, with 21—year—old, that is probably the best player in the world right now, winning roland garros and wimbledon back to back and playing incredible tennis. just when i take everything in consideration. in consideration this probably is the biggest sporting success i've ever had in my career. of course i wanted gold, and i know i knew that it's going to take

the highest mountain to climb at the moment. probably the highest one playing alcaraz, who is in incredible form. i think the fact that i lost as easy as i did against him in the finals of wimbledon actually kind of worked in my favour because i knew that i could not probably do worse than that, the way i the way i played and the way ifelt against him on the court. so i knew that it's going to be a different match. i just felt it. meanwhile, another superstar of their sport has added an olympic title to their trophy collection. scottie scheffler has won the golf gold for the usa after an astounding final round of 62 nine uner par, at le golf national. his score of 19 under par was enough to take him to the top of the leaderboard. the world number one had to wait to see if anyone could match him, but a bogey on the 17th for tommy fleetwood put the british player a stroke behind. scheffler, a two time major winner, is now an olympic champion. japan's hideki matsuyama

got the bronze. i take tremendous pride in coming over here and representing my country. if you go to a sporting event you hear everybody singing the national anthem, it's a pretty special thing to be a part of. it's something i take tremendous pride in. it was very emotional being out there on stage as the flag is being raised. singing the national anthem and yeah, there's definitely one i will rememberfor a long time. i remember for a long time. i haven't been it recently and i think— haven't been it recently and i think being back there, playing well and — think being back there, playing well and feeling how that felt again. — well and feeling how that felt again. i— well and feeling how that felt again, i enjoyed it so much and i'm unbelievably proud to be an olympic— i'm unbelievably proud to be an olympic medallist. i never thought that that would happen. the usa ended top of the olympic swimming medals table after two more

golds on the final night, both won with world records. while the first winner of the night was sweden's sarah sjoestroem. the first winner of the night. the night. she sprinted to the 50 metres freestyle title going one better than her silver in toyko. it's sjoestroem's third olympic gold, and her second in paris after winning the 100 metres title. australia's meg harris was second and the bronze went to china's zhang yufei. chile's francesca crovetto won a dramatic women's skeet shooting final, denying britain's amber rutter a gold in controversial circumstances. crovetto and rutter could not be seperated in their gold medal showdown and it went to a sudden death shoot—off. both competitors missed one of their first six shots, then a second miss from rutter — which she strongly protested and television replays showed she'd hit the target — ensured victory for crovetto.

hopefully we can bring in var into these competitions so then we can get a really fair level playing field to whether we do hit the shots, because i know some of the other girls in the finals as well were protesting shots. so i think it's really important that we, we dive back into that, um, technology and it's something that's used across sports, not just in our sport, because, yeah, we want an equal playing field. and i know people at home are all commenting on it. so ijust, yeah, i think it's important notjust for myself but for all athletes that we make sport as fair as possible. monday morning's mixed team triathlon will go ahead as planned despite water quality concerns leading to training sessions being cancelled. organisers insist analysis of the river seine now shows the situation will improve sufficiently for the swimming part of the race to take place. heavy rain had caused the water quality to dip below the standards required, leading to some doubt about whether there'd be another delay after the men's event was postponed by a day last week and belgium have withdrawn

pressure will affect more northern parts of the country. and it is here where we'll see outbreaks of rain, whereas further south, closer to higher pressure, this is where we'll see the drier and warmer weather with some sunshine. now, this area of low pressure could bring some issues for the north—west of the uk with heavy rain. could see some local flooding in places, particularly argyll and the highlands. so a very wet, windy start to monday here. eventually, the rain begins to push south—eastwards through the day, brightening up behind it and the winds easing, but a blustery day further south and east. but much of england and wales will be dry, with variable clouds, some sunshine and feeling much warmerand humid again, up to the high 20s here, mid 20s further north. now, that band of rain, some of it heavy and thundery, will affect western england and wales through monday evening. during the night, it begins to fizzle as it pushes its way towards eastern england. but ahead of it, it will stay warm and muggy. behind it, in the clearer skies, it'll be cooler and fresher. plenty of sunshine in the north and the west to start tuesday, that weather front weakening as it pushes towards east
