system into the far north—west but look at the temperatures, highs of 23 in scotland, high 20s likely across the south—east and it will get hotter still as we move into monday because of the heat coming up from the near continent. we could have record—breaking august heat in bordeaux if we see over 41 celsius, we are going to see 33 degrees across the south—east and there is going to be a lot of rain developing into the far north—west from that area of low pressure, so thundery downpours here, and a fresher feel that the heat and hue hidty continuing to build across the south—east, peaking at 33 degrees, if that is too hot for you things will change, you will be a bit more comfortable from tuesday on wards. back to you jane. thanks louise. and that's bbc news at six.

hello there, i'm olly foster. here is what is coming up for you on sportsday. hanging on for gold — teenager toby roberts climbs onto the top of the podium to fulfil his olympic dream. it just feels itjust feels incredible, like years and years of work have gone into this, if you stand on that podium, it feels me with just pride. one final push for katarina johnson—thompson to claim a first olympic medal, but gold could be out of her reach. evans and barker make it through the madness of the madison to take silver. also coming up on sportsday: stepping up from the young lions — lee carsley is england's interim manager as the search continues for a full—time boss. and getting ready for the big time — bromley play their first match in the football league tomorrow.

good evening, welcome along. back in 2016, the international olympic committee announced that sport climbing would make its debut at the tokyo games. it was then that 12—year—old toby roberts, a climbing prodigy from surrey, set himself a target. by the time he reached paris, he had earned himself the nickname "terminator" in climbing circles, but the look of sheer disbelief today at winning gold will be one of team gb*s defining images from this games. craig templeton reports. the day started in paris with the streets are washed with gold, perhaps a sign of what was to come. for the sport climbers, though, their sights are set beyond ground—level. this the first look at their challenge. the event is split

a medal, i'm pretty sure, yes. which is awesome. pretty happy group of people. the british team have brought home six golds from each of the last two olympics, seven from beijing and london before that, but they have picked up just two so far in paris — one on the track in the women's team sprint and that incredible comeback from tom pidcock in the mountain biking. speaking to me before tonight's races, british cycling's ceo jon dutton told me that they are going through a transitional period but he's more than happy with the medal return. some terrific performances, across all of the disciplines, some amazing human stories to go with it, overcoming adversity. we are absolutely delighted at british cycling. absolutely delighted at british clinu. * , absolutely delighted at british clin _ * , . , . , absolutely delighted at british clinu. , , ,, cycling. british cycling is the best funded of all _ cycling. british cycling is the best funded of all the _ cycling. british cycling is the best funded of all the olympic - cycling. british cycling is the best funded of all the olympic sports. | cycling. british cycling is the best i funded of all the olympic sports. do you always feel that slight pressure going into a games, knowing how much funding is behind you, and usually you do deliver on those resources as

the first medals of the day came in the seine. hungary's kristof rasovszky upgraded his silver from the last plympics to a gold in the ten kilometre marathon swim. germany's oliver klemet was two seconds behind, with another hungarian — david betlehem — third. lets move away from the paris olympics for now. as expected, lee carsley has been given the interim head coachjob with england following gareth southgate's resignation last month. he led the u21s to the european championship title last year. he'll be in charge for next month's nations league fixtures against the republic of ireland and finland, but the fa say that he could still be in the role for the october international break as well. here's our senior football news reporter alex howell. we knew this was coming, and it was likely lee carsley was going to be appointed as the england interim head coach, and as you said, in the statement, it does say that it's

with a view to those nations league games that are continuing into the autumn. so that would be the games in september, october and even possibly november. as we have seen with previous caretaker managers, and gareth southgate himself, if interim managers do well, they are allowed to continue, and as we spoke about earlier in the week and as we reported on, the reason for lee carsley coming in as interim head coach as he does so many of those players. —— he knows. specifically in the ones who won the euros last summer who have now made the step up to the senior squad, and he has been around the senior set up and been part of that technical team, so providing analysis to gareth southgate. it is a very seamless and smooth step up for carsley. it will be interesting _ smooth step up for carsley. it will be interesting if _ smooth step up for carsley. it will be interesting if they _ smooth step up for carsley. it will be interesting if they fly _ smooth step up for carsley. it will be interesting if they fly through those nations league matches and do very well. what about the long—term

6:56 pm
hello. we've a dose of mediterranean heat on the way, which should reach our shores by sunday. but it is going to be a gradual warming through the weekend. and on top of that, the humidity will rise, especially in the south. now, today, it's been a fresh day in the north of the country, brisk winds off the atlantic bringing scattered clouds and also some showers. here's the radarfrom earlier on — a few showers there in northern ireland, heavier ones in scotland, just a few across the lake district — whereas further south, it has been a generally dry and bright day and the evening, absolutely fine out there. temperatures at 8:00 still hovering around 20 to 23 celsius across the bulk of england. not far off of that in wales, a bit fresher in the north. and in the north, the showers will continue through the night. in the south, by around midnight, it'll turn cloudy across many south—western areas of the uk, this sort of thick area of light rain and drizzle spreading to coastal parts of wales, the south—west of england too. shouldn't be raining in the east and actually
6:57 pm
the south could be clear. these are the morning temperatures — 12 in glasgow, about 14 in london. so on saturday, well, broadly speaking, the southern half of the uk at times could be quite cloudy with some damp weather from time to time here in these western areas. i think sunny along the south coast of england, but the best of the sunshine in belfast, around the lake district, newcastle. scotland, sunny spells and showers. now, by sunday, we have hot air spreading in from france. high pressure's in charge of the weather, the winds are light, strong sunshine. temperatures are likely to hit high 20s widely across england and into wales, and probably hitting 30 degrees in one or two spots. and then by monday, that hot air which will have spread from spain through france, towards the uk, will be peaking. so we could see temperatures as high as 33 celsius, but far from it across some western and northern areas. in fact, a weather front will be sweeping through. there could be some storms in northern ireland, in the north—west of england, across scotland.
6:58 pm
so, much cooler here, whereas across the bulk of central, eastern and southern england, we've got that heat. but it is going to be a brief heat wave, if you can call it that, a couple of days of fairly intense heat, and then after that, from tuesday onwards, it's back to where we were. so, weatherfronts sweeping off the atlantic and much fresher conditions. bye— bye.
