with the mountains. there are many ways, similarities between italy and paris, even if it is winter versus summer, than from italy to beijing. we think the land, it is an urban city with european flavours. we have the fantastic backdrops of the alps, so the winter games come back to the alps. after three additions in far away and differ mountains, so we think the alps is the home of winter sports and we want them as a beautiful backdrop. remember the floorfinal remember the floor final and the gymnastics was causing controversy about who came third. romania came third. she then lost her bronze medal despite the fact she was on

the floor with the remaining flag behind her. she was celebrating and i was told that the us athlete, jordan chiles, to have a look at her difficulty score and the judges did that and raised her school. she then ended up taking third place and winning the bronze medal. since then the remaining athletic olympic committee have submitted an inquiry into the court of appeal arbitration for sport and they have agreed with romania. they have reinstated that third place and now the international olympic gymnastics federation has stripped jordan chiles of her bronze. he will be me reading more about that over the next few days, it is a controversial moment for artistic gymnastics. so let's look even further than the winter olympics and to the next summer games that will be hosted by los angeles. joining me now is david wharton, writer for los angeles times.

12:17 pm
made only oblique references to the fighting but in his video address last night, he said ukraine's military was pushing the war onto "the aggressor*s territory". take a listen. translation: today, i received i several reports regarding the front lines and our actions to push the war onto the aggressor*s territory. i am grateful to every unit of the defence forces, ensuring that ukraine is proving that it can indeed restore justice and ensure the necessary pressure on the aggressor. kyiv launched its surprise attack on tuesday, advancing rapidly more than 10km inside russia — the deepest raid since moscow began its full—scale invasion of ukraine in february 2022. russian and ukrainian forces have been locked in intense fighting in kursk. strict security measures are in place there and two other russian regions — belgorod and bryansk. thousands of civilians have been evacuated on both sides of the border. the governor of kursk region has ordered the evacuations there to be accelerated after 13 people
12:18 pm
were injured when a ukrainian missile hit a residential building. ukrainian forces have reportedly created a new front line 30 kilometres long. meanwhile president zelensky says russian forces probably used a north korean missile for an overnight air strike on the kyiv region, which killed a father and his four—year—old son. ukraine's air force says four north korean—made missiles were launched by russia as part of a large—scale attack across various regions overnight. it says ukrainian forces destroyed 53 out of 57 attack drones. zhanna bezpyatchuk from the bbc*s ukrainian service gave us this update on those overnight strikes in kyiv. it was one of the most massive attacks in different regions of ukraine within recent months. russia
12:19 pm
mostly launched drones against ukraine and for example, i, myself, woke up two explosions. they were quite far away. they were somewhere in the region of kyiv, where, unfortunately it is reported three people were killed, one of them was a child and his father was killed. for some regions of ukraine, it lasted for many hours in a row. in one region it was 1a hours and it was the longest one since the beginning of the war. there are many talks whether russia might retaliate for ukraine's incursion in the border region of kursk. but this is not the biggest fear for many ukrainians. the biggest one is still
12:20 pm
whether this particular mostly drone attack, but it included missiles and that it was mentioned, some missiles might have been ballistic weapons provided by north korea to russia. again, the biggest fear is the energy infrastructure. a few more attacks might force the collapse of the energy infrastructure. it is in autumn and winter when ukrainians need heating and electricity, that might be a huge challenge. let me show you some of the latest images through on the news desk now, they show what is said to be a ukrainian tank firing on something inside russia in the kursk region. these aerial images have come

from the russian defence ministry through reuters news agency. they have not been verified by the bbc. the first of the funerals, for the three young girls fatally stabbed at a taylor swift dance class in southport, will take place today. nine year—old alice dasilva aguiar will be laid to rest at st patrick's catholic church in southport. the service comes after the parents of another victim, six—year—old bebe king, revealed that her older sister witnessed the attack. olivia richwald reports. alice de silva aguiar, aged nine, described as amazing, caring and confident. she was killed alongside six—year—old bebe king and seven year—old elsie dot stancombe on july 29th. ten others were seriously injured in the attack on a taylor swift themed dance event. last week, a memorial service, a celebration of alice's life, took place at saint patrick's church on merseyside, where alice had celebrated her first communion just a few months ago. family and friends of alice sang

hymns and read tributes in portuguese and english. and today, alice's funeral will take place at the same church. fatherjohn hennigan said herfamily feel she is now in heaven. they believe that we've got to let her go dancing into heaven. that's one of the messages they gave to me. she's going dancing into heaven. that's how they see this and this a funeral is, of course, going to be profoundly sad. but it also will have that deep joy because that's what they believe. they believe she's gone home to heaven, dancing with the angels and saints. all those who were injured in the attacks have now been released from hospital. the funerals haven't taken place yet for elsie dot stancombe and bebe king. yesterday it emerged that bebe's older sisterjeannie, aged nine, witnessed the attacks and escaped. her parents said jeannie had shown incredible strength

and courage and bebe was sweet, kind and spirited. 18—year—old axel rudikabana, from southport, has been charged with three counts of murder, ten counts of attempted murder and possession of a knife. he's been detained into youth custody. olivia ringwald, bbc news, southport. to the israel—gaza war and us vice—president and democratic presidential candidate, kamala harris, has added her voice to international condemnation of the loss of civilian life in saturday's israeli air strike on a school compound in gaza. around 1000 displaced palestinians had been sheltering in the building at the time of the dawn strike. the israeli military insists it used precision missiles to target what it claims was a hamas command centre in the compound. the director of a local hospital said the facility had received 70 bodies and the remains of at least ten more people. israel disputes those figures. this is what ms harris said while on the campaign trail. you know, yet again, far too many civilians have been killed.
12:24 pm
i mean, israel has the right to go after the terrorists that are hamas, but, as i have said many, many times, they also have, i believe, an important responsibility to avoid civilian casualties. these are live pictures from khan younis in southern gaza. this is where israel have issued new evacuation orders for the city. the orders, they are among the most expansive issue during ten months of fighting, wilful stands of thousands of palestinians to leave districts in central, eastern and western areas of khan younis. residents there have been told the affected areas have become dangerous combat

zones. they have issued several warnings since the october the 7th attack. the united nations says more than 2 million people have been displaced from their homes, many of the numerous times. those are the latest pictures looking into khan younis. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. hot and humid—feeling conditions, particularly for southern and eastern areas of england. thunderstorms further north and west. all of this to come in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. but for the rest of the day today across the uk it looks dry. there will be a lot of sunshine around, it will be feeling warm. but it's been a bit of a slow start towards the south coast of england here, still the risk of some sea mist and fog lapping onshore at times, but even towards southern areas of devon, i think that should tend to break up as the south
12:26 pm
easterly wind picks up. with the onshore breeze it's a bit cooler towards north sea facing coast than yesterday, but temperatures widely in the low to the mid 20s, maybe 29 or 30 celsius for london and parts of berkshire. and then overnight tonight, well, we'll keep the clear skies towards the east but here come those thunderstorms, torrential downpours potentially for northern ireland, western scotland, a few showers, too, for western wales, down through south—west england. temperatures across the south of england may not drop locally below 20 degrees celsius. it will feel warm, sticky, uncomfortable for sleeping. but here comes that fresher feeling air on monday behind this cold front. now, it's where these two air masses meet. the cool air from the atlantic, that very hot air streaming in from what's been a very warm southern europe that will see the thunderstorms break out, most likely through the early part of the morning for northern ireland, western scotland, anywhere, really, from northern yorkshire and north lincolnshire, northwards. further south, it should stay largely dry. an improving picture for everybody, with a lot of sunshine through the afternoon.
12:27 pm
but very hot in southern eastern areas of england, parts of london, cambridgeshire could get as high as perhaps 3a celsius, and it will still be warm here on tuesday, but not quite as hot. here come those atlantic fronts, then, pushing further eastwards, some sunshine developing behind but now fresher—feeling air for most of the uk. still 28 or 29 celsius out towards southern, eastern areas of england. cooler further north and west with some further outbreaks of rain. there could be some more widespread showers too on wednesday, particularly for northern and western areas again, also some sunny spells around. temperatures still in the low to the mid 20s for many parts of england and parts of eastern wales as well. but it's going to be quite unsettled as we head through next week. so fresher—feeling air, some sunny spells at times, but also some further outbreaks of rain. bye— bye.

this is bbc news, the headlines: the gold medals are rolling in on the final day of the paris olympics. hungary's michelle gulyas has won the women's modern pentathlon, with france taking silver and south korea bronze. earlier, the netherlands' sifan hassan won the women's marathon in an olympic record time.
12:30 pm
ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky has acknowledged for the first time that his military is conducting an offensive inside russia's western kursk region. it comes as russia carries out overnight missile and drone attacks in six regions of ukraine, killing at least two people in kyiv. the first of three funerals for the young girls killed at a taylor swift dance class in southport last month will take place this afternoon. alice dasilva aguiar will be laid to rest at st patrick's catholic church in the town. the killings sparked disorder across the uk. there has been another gold medal in the women's sprint which has gone to andrews of new zealand, her second medal of the games.
