close to 1,000 medals have been handed out, as team usa win the last gold on offer, taking them top of the medal table. and after two bronzes, sifan hassan finally has her hands on gold, after winning the marathon in an olympic record time. welcome along, thank you forjoining us, as the paris 2024 olympics come to an end. it all began over a fortnight ago — and after 32 sports, 329 events and 987 medals — the games finished on sunday with a dramatic women's basketball final which changed who finished top of the medal table. more on that to come but first, this is how the closing ceremony played out

in the stade de france. a chance for all the competing nations to come together and celebrate the games. it was star—studded, with tom cruise among those making an appearance, as the curtain was brought down with an official handover to los angeles, which will host the next olympics in 2028. well, there was concern before the ceremony took place, as french police evacuated the area around the eiffel tower, after a man was seen climbing the paris landmark. officials say they "immediately intervened and arrested" a man, with visitors briefly locked on the second floor allowed to exit around 30 minutes later. we were on the second floor, and they closed us in the inside part.
2:47 am
why? because someone was climbing the wall. so what happened, they asked you to stay there, they locked you inside the second floor, right? yes. so how long were you there? i don't know, 20 minutes. 20. 20, maybe half an hour. did you see the man climbing up? no, i didn't, but some people did, yes. 13 medals were on offer on the final day, and the last of them was won by team usa — a victory which ensured they finished top of the medal table. all thanks to the women's basketball team, who beat france in a thriller. here, the us took a three—point lead with little over three seconds to go — but france weren't done and thought they'd levelled — but it was judged to have come from inches inside the three—point line, and that meant the usa won by a point, 67—66.

when it comes to getting the work done and the job done, a woman is always going to step up to the plate and get it done. so i'm not surprised at all. i felt like the work we put in, the weight, the fear we always carry, we wear that on our sleeves and with a lot of pride so when it is time to shine right under these big lights, women are always going to prevail in there, because we used to it. it's nothing. we have women that have birthed children. there's actually someone who was six months pregnant here, crushing it. so when it comes to showing up and showing out, i'm going to always bet my money on a woman, because, like, we'rejust phenomenal. not trying to guess the man at all, love to y'all, but at the end of the day, like, the things we go through, the weight that we carry, the mental aspect that we approach things in life, there are not a lot of people to crash at the way we do, so shout out to all the women going on out there,

and now wejoining them. and so this is what that gold medal meant for the final medal table. a 40th gold for the united states which moved them above china — with 126 medals won overall. japan making up the top three, with australia fourth and the hosts france in fifth. then come netherlands and great britain. us sportjournalist cheryl rae stout says the women's basketball victory was one of the best games the american team has ever played — and in her words wsa the perfect end to the olympics... it was one of the best games i think the united states has ever played, and france was up for it. to have that whole paris crowd screaming and yelling, and this was really a great game. gabby williams, i know her, she was with the chicago sky, she had 19 points. she really played well. the defence of both teams was really a chequered mess to figure out who was going to do what.
2:50 am
i thought that kalea copper for the united states, she used to be with chicago sky, she really was the game setter. she had 12 points, she forced the rebound. it was a great game. asia wilson, 21 points, 13 rebounds, four blocked shots. this was a game for the ages. certainly was a memorable end. the start of the final day was pretty dramatic as well. sifan hassan of the netherlands won gold in the women's marathon. after bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, she was first here — the 31—year—old accelerated in the final 200 metres to cross the line in an olympic record two hours 22 minutes 55 seconds, just ahead of ethiopia's tigst assefa. medals galore, too, on the final day in the velodrome — most notably for new zealand's ellesse andrews. her victory in the women's sprint earned her her second gold — and her third medal overall. andrews now holds two 0lympic titles, one world championship and a commonwealth title, too.
2:51 am
it's quite overwhelming, for me, because i didn't come into this knowing that i could win a gold medal, let alone two, so i think it is going to take a bit of time for me to just really relax and enjoy it and understand sort of what this all means. there was a bronze for britain's emma finucane in the velodrome — while emily campbell here also won bronze in the 81 kilogram weightlifting event — adding to the silver she won in tokyo three years ago. great britain finishing with 65 medals overall — 1a of them gold. bronze for campbell and for emma finucane. the final day wasn't one to rememberfor american gymnastjordan chiles, though, who's had her bronze medal taken away, following a ruling by the court of arbitration for sport. chiles was upgraded to third in monday's floorfinal after an appeal, but an inquiry found that her appeal was lodged four seconds too late, so romania's ana barbosu wins

the bronze medal instead. one of the new sports in paris was the breaking event, and there's one competitor everyone*s talking about. 36—year—old australian rachael gunn, known as "raygun" — she went viral following her performance — which unfortunately failed to earn a single point from thejudges. amid the criticism, the breakers community and the world dancesport federation have been quick to show their support. on our side, we reached out an athlete, and we are aware about what has happened, especially on social media, and definitely we should put the safety of the athlete, in this case mental safety, in first place. she was doing this to represent her country, her region, and she created some original moves, which could be may befunny or entertaining for others, but for us, she basically represented breaking

and hip—hop, she was trying to be original and bring something new to the table. and so as paris waves goodbye — the four—year journey to los angeles now begins. but will there be a new person in charge of the international olympic committee by the time those games arrive? world athletics president lord coe says he will give "serious thought" to running for the role of president of the organisation. the current person in charge, thomas bach, announced on saturday that he would stand down next year, following 12 years in the role. a new president will take charge injune 2025, following elections in march in 2025. next to some news away from the olympics. chelsea continue to add to their squad, ahead of the new english premier league season, which begins on friday. they've confirmed the signing of portugal international, pedro neto. the wingerjoins from wolves for a fee of $69 million. he's signed a seven—year contract and takes chelsea's current summer spending to over the $200 million mark. former arsenal and manchester

united forward alexis sanchez has rejoined udinese on a free transfer, 18 years after first signing for the italian club. the 35—year—old was released by inter milan when his contract expired injuly. and golfer graeme mcdowell has been suspended for one liv golf tournament, after violating the tour*s anti—doping policy. the former us open champion has also been fined $125,000, after using a decongestant, which includes a banned substance. he'll miss this week's event in west virginia, and is eligible to return to competition in chicago next month. and back to the olympics, to end the programme. from paris to pakistan, as one gold medallist received a hero's welcome as he returned home. arshad nadeem won pakistan's first ever track and field gold medal at the games, with and olympic record throw of 92.97 metres in the men's javelin, which put him ahead of the tokyo champion, india's neeraj chopra. nadeem, on his return to his hometown in punjab, was given an open top

bus parade and greeted by large crowds. a great moment for him. and that is all from us. there'll no doubt be more scenes like that as medal winning 0lympians from all across the world head home. the bbc sport website has much more reaction and reflection on the paris 0lympics, but from me and the team, that is all for now — goodbye. hello. a stormy night for some of us, and on top of that, it feels very warm and humid out there — almost tropical — with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees there on the south coast of england through the early hours of monday morning, and even in northern ireland, around 17 degrees.
2:56 am
now, this is what the heat wave looks like across western europe. at the moment, temperatures well above the average for the time of the year. the temperatures will peak in england on monday. let's get to the forecast, then, and that stormy picture developing to the west of the british isles. you can see the storm clouds there, and the radar, indicating the rainfall, flashes of lightning as well. more to come through the course of early monday. so the weather front crossing northern ireland with the downpours through early monday morning, then reaching the west coast of scotland, spreading across scotland as it moves towards the north east. a few showers in northern england, but south of that, the picture looks generally dry and sunny in the morning. now, this is the yellow warning from the met office — a chance of frequent lightning,

hail and strong winds within this area. now, because it's a yellow warning, it's a relatively low risk for any one location, but when you get it, you'll know about it. so the forecast, then, for the rest of monday, then. well, the story is going to be the heat across england. in fact, from the south east, through east anglia, into lincolnshire, temperatures well over 30 celsius. cambridgeshire could well reach around 35 celsius. far more comfortable, i'm sure you'll agree, across western parts of the uk, with the low 20s, and it will freshen up as we go through the course of the week, gradually. weather fronts are approaching us on tuesday. that does mean cloud and some rain, and here's the forecast for early on tuesday morning, with that cloud and rain spreading into western parts, but still a very warm southerly across eastern areas of the uk. so, from london, across east anglia, into lincolnshire, temperatures could still reach the high 20s, but more typically, it's going to be the low 20s, or even the high teens, further towards the west and north, and then on wednesday, a ridge of high pressure builds in between weather systems, so that means that the weather's looking fairly promising. many of us would call it a perfect summer's day, with fine weather midweek. towards the end of the week, there could be some rain,
