people are hoping to hearfrom kamala harris. the course of this week is the issue surrounding the israel policy. joe biden has been resolute in his support of israel. he has at one point withheld a small delivery of large—scale bombs from israel, some later delivered. but there's a great interest here from delegates and elected persons within the democratic party as well as to what kamala harris*s policy would be in relation to israel. would she engage in some sort of policy that would involve the holding of weapons delivered in from the us to israel? the small gesture, if we want to sell it —— call it, from joejoe biden. the city home to the greatest number of palestinians in this city,

the greatest density, so no wonder that there are large—scale protests here. they have been going on from early last night. they started a little earlier this morning and we are expecting them to build throughout the day. there are others scheduled for later in the week as well. there have been a lot of contentious points, and the authorities, in terms of how close the protesters would be permitted to get to the united centre here so that they can make their message be heard by those who are inside here, ljy heard by those who are inside here, by the congress people, the delegates, the senators and all of those within the party structure who will decide on the policy here. for the remaining few months of the biden administration, but also should kamala harris be elected, what her policy would look like. might whine, there's been a briefing getting under way. —— catriona. i'm looking at a comment from congressman cedric richman, talking about the convention being ready to answer the device of backwards

setting out what they see as wins for the democrats. they're going to talk about workers' rights. we will hear from the leader of the uaw union, the united auto workers union. they will also talk about reproductive rights and they're doing a few seconds described as fact checking of donald trump. they're even going to play clips of donald trump himself, which is quite an unusual thing to do at any party's convention over any airtime to the candidate from the other party. but that is kind of the theme of tonight, culminating in this farewell to joe of tonight, culminating in this farewell tojoe biden as he passes on the baton to kamala harris. catriona, thank you very much. katrina perry there in chicago. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news.

as you saw a moment ago, the middle east is on people's minds at the democratic national convention in chicago, and america's top diplomat antony blinken is in the region, where he's had talks with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. netanyahu's office described the meeting with the us secretary of state as "positive". mr blinken says now could be "the last opportunity" to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal in gaza. while the us has expressed optimism about a deal, that level of optimism isn't shared by the israeli leadership or hamas. we expect to hear from mr blinken shortly. here he was speaking earlier today.. this is a decisive moment. probably the best, maybe the last opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a cease fire, and to to get a ceasefire, and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security.
5:17 pm
i'm here as part of an intensive diplomatic effort on president biden's instructions to try to get this agreement to the line and ultimately over the line. it is time for it to get done. it's also time to make sure that no—one takes any steps that could derail this process. the current negotiations are based on a plan consisting of three phases. phase one would see a "full and complete ceasefire" lasting six weeks. the withdrawal of israeli forces from all populated areas of gaza, and the exchange of some of the hostages — including women, the elderly and the sick or wounded — for palestinian prisoners held in israel. phase two would see the release of all other living hostages and a "permanent end to hostilities". and finally, phase three involves the start of a major reconstruction plan for gaza and the return of dead hostages* remains. meanwhile, the hamas—run health authority in gaza says israeli air strikes killed at least 21 people including six children on sunday.

0ur middle east correspondent, wyre davies, has the latest from jerusalem. i asked him what any sticking points were. the key areas are what israeli military control would remain there is also the issue up to what extent and others have said israel is putting new demands. the key areas are what israeli military control would remain in parts of gaza, particular southern and central gaza. israel wants to take control of a corridor, a strip of land between gaza and egypt. —— retain control. that is a contentious issue. there's also the issue to what extent people in gaza would be able to return to their home areas in the north of gaza, and central areas, unhindered by israeli

military checks. that seems to be a big sticking point. this was a two hour meeting between president biden and netanyahu. 0n the face of it, the meeting is a good thing, showing that the two men spoke about fundamental things. according to the israelis, the meeting was positive and held in a good atmosphere, but we have had few other details. of course, there have been leaks from meetings in the past, but israeli reaction on the ground in the well—connected parts of the israeli media is much less positive. there's a feeling that hardline, right—wing members of the israeli government won't let mr netanyahu go through with a ceasefire because they think the military objectives are not yet met. similarly, hamas on the ground has a new leader in yahya sinwar, thought to be even more reluctant for a ceasefire than his predecessor, who was reportedly assassinated by the israelis. 0n the ground, much more scepticism than we are getting from the leadership. let's return to these live pictures from tel aviv. these are families of

blinken to speak shortly. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. good afternoon. well, it's going to feel very much as if autumn has arrived at times this week. it will be unseasonably windy, particularly blustery, towards irish sea coast. gusts of wind here of up to 40—50 mph at times through the week. some more heavy rain, too, to come in the forecast, especially for the north and the west. but some are not completely lost. some sunny spells, although for most of us, temperatures will be dipping throughout the week, but low pressure certainly dominant. it's out towards the north and the west. it's descending all these weather fronts spinning our way over the next couple of days or so. this afternoon's heavy rain will mostly be across northern ireland, down through western scotland, with some heavy thundery showers to approaching western wales and the far southwest of england. plenty of cloud ahead of this rain, but still some sunshine hanging on for east anglia. for southeast england, some of the sunshine hazy at times — a curious colour to the sky with that wildfire smoke still in the atmosphere from north america. but temperatures in the mid 20s where we see

the best of the sunshine. tonight the winds will ease down a little, some clear spells developing across central areas. watch out for the super moon — of course, it should be visible for some. it's a mild start to the day tomorrow, a lot warmer tonight than it was last night, and particularly out towards the east, it's going to feel quite muggy. we're still left with that legacy of cloud and some outbreaks of rain into tomorrow morning, but that's all clearing its way further eastwards and it's a day very much of sunshine and showers. most of the showers out towards the north and the west where the winds are going to be picking up yet again, particularly across western scotland. some of the showers could have a rumble or two of thunder, but it's drier further south and east, but a fresher feel to things across the board 14—22 or 23 celsius.
5:28 pm
and there's more rain to come to on wednesday. but again, it's most likely out across northern ireland, particularly for western areas of scotland, with some strong gusty winds and some high spring tides, too, could cause some problems further south. then we're looking at a much drier day with a ridge of high pressure here. temperatures again in the low 20s towards the south, but probably the mid—teens for many across northern ireland and western scotland. for the rest of the week, there's more rain in the forecast to come on thursday, particularly in the north and the west, but that rain a little further south on friday. bye—bye for now.
