with a hamstring injury, won't be too far away if he needs advice. here's our sports correspondentjoe wilson well, this test series offers steps forward for england, but it's a huge leap for 0llie pope, thrust into the captaincy ahead of schedule because of the injury to ben stokes. of course, he'll have plenty of help. he did a long practice session today with batting coach marcus trescothick, and pope still has to make his runs. very much in attendance, once again overseeing england's preparations, ben stokes. it is still his england team. so when it comes to the match itself, i wondered how exactly the decisions are going to be made. in terms of ben stokes being around, is it a case that he will give advice when you feel you need it, or do you think he will be giving advice when he thinks you need it? um, i think probably, i think he's going to let me go do my thing over the course of this series, which is good for me. but at the same time, he's obviously going to be watching, chatting with baz and then so i can
6:34 pm
sort of have those conversations in the intervals if i think anything needs to change, and bounce a few ideas off each other. so i think he's sort of said he's more than happy to sort of let me do my thing. and there's we've got some great coaches and obviously he's just another brain in the changing room. if he sees something then him and baz can chat about it as well. so i think it's only a positive having him around. well, all of 0llie pope's predecessors would agree that captaincy is easy when you're winning matches. so how much resistance will sri lanka provide here? well, they are acclimatising still to english conditions afterjust one warm up match here. you need more preparation than that, don't you, in england, surely, before a test match? yes, maybe. you know, the conditions are quite different to asian countries. so, yeah, i think we wanted to play a few matches as well. but yeah, that's what we get. do you think your chances of victory are better because ben stokes is not part of the england team here? uh, maybe , yeah.
6:35 pm
because he's the, i think the balance of the side, he's the key player for them. you know, when it comes to bowling and batting and everything, you know, and we have a good chance. you know, a new guy comes to play so i think, yeah, we have a good chance to win. yes, well it is a restructured england in manchester conditions and sri lanka will be relieved that james anderson is definitely coaching, not playing despite what we saw in the nets here today. joe wilson, bbc news, old trafford. jannick sinner won the cincinnati masters title over night, but it's emerged today that the world number one failed two drugs test during the indian wells masters in march for a banned anabolic steroid. he successfully appealed against an automatic suspension at the time and was allowed to continue playing pending the findings of a doping investigation. that was concluded last week, with a tribunal clearing him of any wrongdoing.

0ur sports correspondent andy swiss has more on the story he tested positive for a substance. the authorities say it was a very low level but it is on the band lists and he tested positive again for it's a few days later. jannik sinner said the reason for this was these physiotherapist had cut his finger and was using a spray to treated, a spray which he bought over the counter at the pharmacy in italy, but unknown to the physio, this spray contained cluster both, this spray contained the steroid, and in the process of giving messages to jannik sinner, he passed on to jannik sinner*s skin and him. the international tennis integrity agency investigated this accusation, and he has not been given any sort of suspension and he released a statement saying that he will now put this challenging

backed by 0lympic medallists it launched today around the country, lindsey prosser reports from salford music. seth has already been identified as a possible future 0lympic talent. it's amazing because, like, skateboarding is my, like, absolute favourite thing to do in the world. i love spending time with my family. i love spending time with my friends doing everything. it's just amazing. it's so fun. one of our neighbours, you know, gave us a penny board. he went on it and he could do it. and we were like, "whoa, that's ace". and it'sjust gone from strength to strength, and you don't know you're going to be good at something until you give it a go. these young children clearly enjoy being active, former 0lympic rowing champion katherine grainger is leading the campaign. great britain on a mission. all it is some some details of yourself. there's some tests you can do yourself, which is one kilometre run, a standingjump, how long you can hold a plank for.

so nothing you need any kind of expertise or equipment for, and then off the back of that, the next few months will be some testing centres set up throughout the country that people can go down to get invited to try some other tests, and then after that it becomes a bit more sport specific. rihanna paris smith. rihanna has one european track cycling gold medals. she joined the cycling pathway when her talent was spotted by a coach, and is now focusing on the los angeles 0lympics. i always rode my bike as a hobby with my family, and then i went to a sports college and there was a cycling academy there, and the guy basicallyjust took me under his wing and said, "yeah, we'll take you". and he sort of showed me the ropes of cycling. at first it was rode, and then he suggested a track, at first it was road, and then he suggested a track, and i started riding a little bit of the track and sort of started from there, really. powell, if he believes in it, i think it will happen. - judoka dan powell is competing at the paris para 0lympics, and he wants more disabled people to become elite athletes.

6:41 pm
is one of paralympic gb*s all time greats. even going back from 1a—year—old hollie, you learn so much with time. you know, you learn from your mistakes, you learn from winning, you learn from losing. and i think thatjust everything in one, you take that pressure that, you know, that fire in your belly — as me and my dad always says — to every games, every majors, and you go out there and you just do your best. with paralympic gold in her locker from eight years ago, hollie then struggled at tokyo. notjust in the stadium, but out of it too. i lost my identity. i talked about obviously struggling with stuff myself, but i think that the important thing was, i then got to realise that i'm notjust hollie arnold, the sportsperson, like, i am hollie arnold, the person. so i started to find like my spark back again and just relying on other people to help, like, to be able to speak to people. so i really strongly believe, like, talking about it makes such a difference. when times are tough,

it can be easy to fall out of love with even the thing that you've loved the longest. yeah. in your case, the javelin. but from the person that's sat in front of me right now, the love is there, right? if it was ever gone, it's back now? 100%. there's always a time in everybody*s life where theirjob, you have ups and downs. it'sjust, it's normality. it's just life, it's reality. but i absolutely love throwing the javelin and being able to showcase that in the worlds this year, just how happy i was, how excited, how in the moment i was, i was like, god, i love this sport and i am not retiring anytime soon yet! the little 1a—year—old hollie in beijing in 2008 is not the hollie in 202a, and i think thatjust mentally i've been able to deal with a lot. you know, there's been a lot happened in my career so far, and i think that if you — it'sjust, it's being prepared, it's being uncomfortable with the comfortable, you know, just going for it. and i know i've got an amazing family and, and team around me to support me and do everything they can.

so, let'sjust give it a go. good luck to hollie arnold. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today.. chelsea have agreed a fee in the region of £a5 million for atletico madrid's portugal internationaljoao felix. that paves the way for conor gallagher to move in the other direction. burnley midfielder sander berge is close to joining fulham after a £25 million bid for the player was agreed. the player, who missed just one premier league game for the clarets last season, is having a medical today. wolves are looking to sign arsenal goalkeeper aaron ramsdale on a season—long loan. the offer includes an option to make the move permanent for the england international next summer. ramsdale lost his place in the side to david raya last season paul heckingbottom is the new preston manager. he replaces ryan lowe who was sacked after they lost on the opening day of the championship season. heckingbottom won promotion to the premier league with sheffield united last year

likes to give the players the creativity and freedom to do whatever best suits, so i think we will see a better version of kylian mbappe it, i think there's more to come from him, and i think both carlo ancelotti and playing alongside the likes of vinicius junior and roderigo and jude bellingham will get even more from kylian mbappe he, and perhaps the best we have ever seen from him. and you can see more of that interview with semra on the latest football news show on the bbc iplayer right now as they take a closer look at real madrid's at new look galacticos. just a few months ago, professional basketball in the uk was on the brink. triple seven partners, that had a a5% stake in the british basketball league and owned the london lions, the most successful mens and women's teams, lost their licence to run the league, with concerns over their financial position. against the odds , super league basketball, with nine teams, will launch next month, with a number of investors coming in to save some of the franchises that had folded. only this week london and manchester

of the worst of the weather, wettest and windiest here. but there will be some sunny spells. it's looking quite changeable at times, and you can just see that tight squeeze on the isobars out towards parts of western scotland earlier on today. strong gusty winds, a cold front going through, introducing fresher feeling conditions for tonight. so the skies will clear, the winds will ease down a little. there'll still be a few showers around, but a largely dry start to the day tomorrow, and certainly a cooler one than we saw earlier on this morning. many of our temperatures could drop back into high single figures. so a mostly dry start to the day on wednesday with some early brightness around, but cloud is thickening from the west and through the morning, we're going to see rain piling across northern ireland into western scotland. the rainfall totals really starting to rack up here, and that rain will be pushing eastwards across scotland and perhaps as far eastwards as the pennines. some strong, gusty winds, too. and there could be some coastal overtopping, some large waves with high spring tides. but further south it's mostly dry story but just
