this afternoon the winds to drop quite significantly and some of the bigger names including hull didn't tee off until that time. the winds did drop quite considerably and some of the bigger names, including hull, didn't tee off until that time, so they benefited quite a lot from the conditions, improving somewhat. hull had back to back birdies on the ninth and the 10th, another on the 12th, and then two more, including on the last hole where she thrilled the crowd at the 18th. well, playing alongside hull was world number one nelly korda, who also had a great back nine, putting her one shot off the lead on four under. earlier on the first day, the golfers had to contend with some really difficult conditions with winds of up to 45mph. that was tough to drive into, so there were some tricky moments for them, and there was a concern that play might have to be suspended. fortunately, that wasn't the case, and coping well with the wind was england's georgia hall. she eagled the ninth and finished on one underfor the day. she spoke afterwards and said that this

was one of the windiest rounds that she had ever played. it's a mental battle and, you know, a lot of waiting on tees and, you know, discussing where the wind is coming from, what angle, which is also like very important. even the slightest angle could make a difference. so yeah, i think it's just it's really tough out there and i think it's very key to stay patient. i think the strongest winds that i've ever played in, for sure. could barely try and swing the club at times, but i think i coped pretty well. and, um, it wasjust. yeah, it was a great test of golf, and i think that's what's needed at women's open. it's still very tight at the top of the leaderboard, and it's early days for charley hull. the conditions are thought to be slightly better tomorrow. the winds will not be as high, but it is expected to rain. however, hull says she enjoys playing on links courses. she's certainly doing well on this one. the final tennis grand slam of the year, the us open, gets under way in new york on monday and the draw

12:54 am
so, you know, to me that's also the way to look at it as well, because, you know, even though you've got it at home, what are the advantages. i mean, world rugby basically, um, try and create an equal playing field in terms of facilities and the way that you, you move around the country and stuff like that. so the only way that i think where there are advantages is for us to make it a very normal environment. you know, let's get away from being cooked up in hotels and let's connect with, with our communities, um, and make sure that we enjoy, enjoy the process and have fun with it rather than actually seeing it as, um, as tedium or high pressure. now, the paralympics are less than a week away. for the first time, british athletes will undergo saliva testing for concussion at the paris games. it's part of a new research project that hopes to increase the knowledge and data of the effects of concussion on para—athletes. certainly in the elite world, that that could mean for us here that we say, "i'm pretty sure, but i can't say for certain you've got concussion. you're not competing tomorrow."
12:55 am
that's the end of your paralympic dream. and we would have to make that call. and it's a really hard call to make. whereas if we could, you know, categorically say, i think it's concussion, let me do a test. great news. it's not. i'm happy for you to compete. that could be a game changer. before we go, just time to remind you of our top story on sportsday. england have nudged ahead of sri lanka heading into day 3 of the first test. they are 23 runs ahead, thanks in part tojamie smith, who'll return to the crease on 72 when play resumes on friday. you can stay across all of that on the bbc sport website and app throughout the match for all the latest. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, thanks for watching, goodbye.

12:57 am
a trail of cloud and nuisance rain once again through the midlands and southeast england. that will ease away. the low pressure moves over to scandinavia and then a quieter afternoon, not quite as windy. still blustery winds, driving in some scattered showers to the far north and west. 1a to 18 degree the high in scotland and northern ireland. 23 degrees the high, perhaps in southeast england, but as we move out of friday into the early hours of saturday morning, there could be a pulse of very wet weather moving its way into south east and eastern england. now, we haven't seen that much in the way of rain this august, so that will bring a spell of much needed rain for the gardens out there, but it will linger for some time on saturday, only slowly easing away into the afternoon. strongest the winds further north and west. here we'll see a frequent rash of showers on and off throughout the day. top temperatures generally a little bit below par 00:12:58,041 --> 4294966103:13:29,429 for this time of year.
