10:33 am
the statements we have heard so far, it is quite clear that everything happened in an unexpected way. and the situation worsened exponentially in a matter of seconds. so obviously it was question about alarms and signals is something we will be looking closely at. it is obviously very important to analyse the behaviour of the captain in this respect. so i can't respond to your question with any kind of reasonable

certainty. we haven't identified which bodies belong _ we haven't identified which bodies belong to — we haven't identified which bodies belong to whom, but i understand this waterspout was extremely localised. presumably you have more general information about dam bursts. all i can tell you is that the
10:35 am
italian navy has information about water and down bursts, it does look as if it is a down burst, but we will be more precise on that score certainly later on. there is no certainty about it, it is pure hypothesis. it is very unlikely that the physical situation will have been recorded very precisely. ah,

10:39 am
it may well be, that as we proceed with the inquiry, we may come up with the inquiry, we may come up with results that will require cooperation with other services and which will require another press conference. there is another question. no, we won't be publishing the
10:40 am
pictures of the wreck, because that is a part of inquiry that is closed. thank you all for coming. you have been watching _ thank you all for coming. you have been watching officials _ thank you all for coming. you have been watching officials who - thank you all for coming. you have been watching officials who are - been watching officials who are investigating the sinking of the super yacht off the sicily coast on monday. it was a one news conference, about an hour and a half —— a long news conference. it started off with the chief prosecutor calling it a grave tragedy, but he did confirm that a shipwreck investigation has been opened into the death of the seven people on board. he did emphasise that it will take time, and that they were in the very early stages
10:41 am
of the investigation, and therefore they are not ruling anything out at this point. there is no legal obligation on the crew or passengers who survived to the men in italy but he did say that they expect them to cooperate fully with the investigation. he said they can only be detained if there is evidence of responsibility, if that responsibility, if that responsibility has been broken. we also praise the incredible courage and skill of the firefighting divers and skill of the firefighting divers and said it was a very difficult operation, but they did allow them to inspect the wreck properly for those bodies. the officials also say the yacht likely site because of a down burst,
10:42 am
not a waterspout as first reported. they now believe it was localised wind that was responsible. they also confirmed during that news conference that one person was on watch at the time of the accident. the prosecutor did also say that it is in effect at the hands of the magistrates, so he did say that there are some questions he could not answer to the law in italy, you heard him during the news conference simply could not answer those. they
10:43 am
all made it clear that there would not be any further statements until the inquiry is completed, as things require careful consideration. a number of other officials at the news conference confirmed that four or five of the bodies were found in a cabin on the left, another in a third cabin, also on the left. they said they were in the higher part of the wreck. they also said that they were probably asleep at the time, thatis were probably asleep at the time, that is why they failed to escape, but again, they said that the investigation would look into that. there were a lot of questions asked tjy there were a lot of questions asked by the media, as you would imagine. some of them included how it was that the crew got onto a lifeboat and survived, but others in the cabins didn't. in response to that question, one of the italian
10:44 am
officials said the incident happened very suddenly, and the inquiry would of course be looking closely into that. they were trying to find out the maximum information possible from the crew members, and they said that would point to how the crew managed to escape and some of the others in the cabins did not, that will be central to the investigation. they were asked if there was a black box on the yacht and if the hatches were left open. they said it did not have exact information about the black box, and added that the first phase of the inquiry will be looking into that further. again, they were questioned a lot about the hatches and whether or not they were battened down. again, they didn't really answer that, but they said it would be that evidence that will be fundamental to the inquiry. they said it was impossible to answer at the moment. they were still trying to understand
10:45 am
all the facts, and also the retrieval of the wreckage. they did also say that a member of the crew was tasked with looking at the hatches, but again they did not want to get any information that they would later have to deny, as they put it. they said at the moment there were no results from any of there were no results from any of the autopsies on the bodies of the seven people who died. bethany bell asked about the timeline of the investigation. the admiral from the coastguard talked about a shipwreck at 50 metres down everything depends on the availabilty of owners and the retrieval of the wreck and all that has to be submitted to the port authorities, and in parallel the inquiry results.
10:46 am
some experts have suggested eight weeks. the admiral said the priority was getting the fuel tanks out and then they will work out a timeframe. the owners will bear the full cost of the retrival. the super yacht was anchored about 700 metres of the port of porticello in sicily, and they were asked about whether it was allowed to be anchored there. they said there was anchored there. they said there was a difference between merchant vessels and pleasure vessels, but there was of course those abnormal weather conditions, and again they will be looking at, they were questioned a lot about that. they mentioned that this was a down burst rather than the waterspout, but again they were asked how it was possible that it could affect one
10:47 am
yacht and not another. they said they were to get to reasonable conclusions. so those are the main things we heard from that news conference. one of them was the actual fact that they have launched actual fact that they have launched a manslaughter and shipwreck investigation, and ijust want to play you the moment that those prosecutors announced the nature of the investigation. translation: i would like to also inform you officially that the prosecution has opened a case hypothesising the prime of shipwreck and manslaughter, but we're only at the initial stage of the inquiry so far, so i will confine myself to giving you only
10:48 am
that information. the development of the inquiry... the captain and the crew will help with investigation. let's now speak to an expert diver and founder of a company that specialises in shipwreck research. thank you for joining us. i know you heard a lot of that news conference. some of the questions were about the divers and how difficult the circumstances work for them. just explain to our

(13mm morning. the main problem for the divers is having to look at iraq on its side. and in fact, they didn't know at first the bodies lying in the upper or lower deck, or in the cabins, so they have to investigate every room, every place, one by one. so that is the main, have had 70 people on that because you need to know about depth, you can do one dive

per day. so everyone on the surface could see what happened. the divers arrived on the wreck and first tried to go inside the wreck from the upper deck where the door and all the windows were open. i suppose the investigation will say more about it later. when it is getting warmer...
10:51 am
were you surprised that a superyacht like this, but had won awards for its design, did sink so quickly? yes, but there is no unsinkable vessel. at the end, the inquiries will find the global reasons which mixed together to cause this. all of the small facts will make a big drama, that will be explained by
10:52 am
the prosecutor i understand. the the prosecutorl understand. the prosecutor _ the prosecutor i understand. the prosecutor also faced questions about the hatches and how the members of the crew managed to get off safely, but those in the cabins did not. iassume off safely, but those in the cabins did not. i assume those will be two of the key points that are investigated.— of the key points that are investiuated. , ,., , investigated. yes. the bodies were i in: in investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the — investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the cabins _ investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the cabins on _ investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the cabins on the _ investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the cabins on the top - investigated. yes. the bodies were lying in the cabins on the top of. lying in the cabins on the top of the wreck, which is on its side, so i imagine that the diver has to go down the wreck and then go up the other side. it was not the most

certainly at first, some rain at times but also some sunny spells, and most of us will see a gradual improvement by the time we get to monday. it has certainly been very wet across the south—eastern quadrant of the uk through this morning, rain starting to clear south—east england, east anglia, into the afternoon. sunny spells and thundery showers could follow on behind. some heavy and thundery, particularly out towards north—west scotland. still windy for the time of year, temperatures below the seasonal average, just not as windy as it was yesterday. overnight tonight, feeling chilly for late august, lots of their spells developing, showers fading away, wince fashion again, start the day off of temperatures and high single figures. for many of us. on sunday, more rain, more weatherfronts moving on from the west, but this time the focus of most of the rim will tend to be across south—western areas of scotland, north—west

england, northern ireland. norman scotland sunny spells and some scattered showers, the rainfall total starting to mount up across the central swathe of the uk, the rain across northern england as well. but for much of england and wales, looking largely dry, shout out towards the west, sunny spells and temperatures started to creep up, but still a very brisk westerly and south—westerly wind. as we move through sunday at inter bank holiday monday for some of us, not in scotland, more weather fronts just waiting in the winds. this time, the weather fronts likely to give some showers, scattered showers across northern ireland and into north—west scotland, but i think for many of us, looking largely dry on monday with high pressure building into the cell. sunny spells, south—westerly winds, again quite breezy for the time of year, but temperatures now more or less back up to the seasonal average, so the high teens, 20s in celsius. and across england and wales, the stench is set to rise further as we head through the rest

we are only at the initial stage of the inquiry so far. but i have to emphasise that the development of the inquiry could actually be of any sort imaginable. a huge manhunt is underway after three people were killed and four seriously injured in a knife attack at a festival in germany. and sacked bbc presenter jermaine jenas apologises for sending inappropriate texts to female colleagues — but denies any illegal activity. this is completely on me. i am 100% in the wrong and i accept full responsibility for that. hello. i am hello. iam nicky hello. i am nicky schiller. welcome to the programme.
