the power goes out and we still have wifi join the millions of people takto do our homework.acy and that's a good thing? great in my book! who are you? no power? no problem. introducing storm-ready wifi. now you can stay reliably connected through power outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery back-up to keep you online. only from xfinity. home of the xfinity 10g network. we are and have been following breaking news for you out of perry, iowa. multiple law enforcement agencies responding to a shooting that happened at perry high school early this morning, and probably just as school was starting to, people were starting to come into the
8:03 am
school. any moment now, and we have been listening to the police department as they are about to hold a press conference, and doing the mic checks and all of the things beforehand, but you are seeing a large police presence there, and what you not seeing, because police have said this is a secure area now, and what you are not seeing is the signs of an active shooter which is the good news from this morning. we don't know any of the details as to who the shooter may be, who may have been or not have been shot. we don't know any of those details, but we know that there was an active shooting going on early this morning. >> and the number of victims is a question that many of the people have on their minds right now, and the producer who drove to the scene, and helped us with the pictures that you have right now, and saw the ambulances traveling in the other direction, and that is all we know, and again, we will be hearing from the dallas county sheriff, and dallas county is about 20 miles northwest of des moines. we will hear that press conference at any second, and we will jump in right when we see
8:04 am
that start. and we have juliette kayyem with us, and andrew mccabe is also with us. what do you see, juliette? >> well, obviously as an analyst, and mother, you want to know the extent of this tragedy, and what occurred in the rooms. we have not heard any news of any numbers of those shot or any fatalities, and as andrew has been saying and we have been saying all morning that we have been doing it enough, and it is not guessing. there is not a lot of ambulances and maybe some, but we don't know if there were people in them, and i have not seen the ambulances with the sirens, and those are the kinds of things that you look at. and that is the first thing, and the second is that i feel like we are on this enough, and i am texting with the producers and is this a big deal or not a big deal based on the numbers, but we should never forget that it should be a big deal whatever the numbers are in terms of
8:05 am
those hurt that we have guns and school shootings, and it is hard for us to even manage the numbers now as we are saying that it is the fourth in 2024, and there are not that many days of school shootings that are the pieces that are merged, because we are focusing on the numbers. >> andy, we are watching, and i know that you are looking at the scene, too, and the officers, and really sort of bringing down their tension there in front of the school. but what happens next? because we are hearing, of course, that the area is secure, which is going to give you the hint that the shooter is neutralized or captured and what happens now, because there is a ton of work that has been to be done in these cases especially if it happened inside of the school itself. >> sure. and first and foremost, sara, you have to preserve the crime scene and collect as much
8:06 am
evidence from that crime scene as you can. it is that evidence that helps you the reconstruct what happened, and not just who committed this act, but what led them to committing that act. how did they enter the building, and carrying the weapons that they brought into the building, and secretly had those weapons in the building or the closet ahead of time, and where did they move firster shoot first and the rounds that they shoot first, and these are all important things, and even if there is no prosecution to come of this, and the shooter had been neutralized on the scene, we still want to know exactly how this happened so we can learn from it to protect this school, and other schools that are in the future. so, that also leads to a more broad investigation about the motives and the intentions of this offender. again, we don't know if that person is alive or dead at this
8:07 am
point, but it is still important to us as law enforcement, and security experts, but to society in general, and certainly to this community to understand why this person did what they did. we don't always get the answer to that question, but understanding as much about it as we can is important, and they will be looking at social media, and writings and journals and interview family members ant what has been going on that led them to this work. all of that work is really in front of this small town here. >> and again, we are waiting for a news conference are the dallas county sheriffs, and we can see the law enforcement presence there, and the relative calm on the scene. all we see is law enforcement, and we have been watching it for 45 minutes and i have not seen one single student in the camera shot which is fine, but it means they have been removed from the back or we are not showing the
8:08 am
students. normally, what would happen with the students in this situation, family reunification, and hang on, juliette, because we have people now approaching the microphones, and last-minute audio checks here, and this is the dallas county sheriff's office, and we will listen in. >> my name is sheriff adam infante, and i'm the sheriff here in dallas county and joined by the state, local and federal partners here at the perry high school. this morning at approximately 7:37 a.m., we had a serious activation alarm at the school which indicated a shooter
8:09 am
activation alarm. and we arrived with multiple gunshot victims. we are still unclear of how many are injured or what the extent of those are, but we are working on that right now. there is no further danger to the public. the community is safe, and we are just now working backwards trying to figure out everything that has happen and making notifications. there is another update later on theday, and where it is still very early, and this happened at 7:37 this morning and school did not start yet luckily, and so very few students and faculty in the building which i think contributed to a good outcome in that sense. we will have more information later on this afternoon, and we will not be releasing any more information in the meantime, and be patient with us so we can talk to the victims and the families and try and figure out
8:10 am
what happened. we won't be answering any questions right now. we will let you know later on this afternoon, after noon, what time we will be meeting back with you to tell you more then. >> you don't have a number of people injured. >> we are working on that? >> have you identified the shooter? >> yes. >> what is their current status? are they alive? >> we will get to that later this afternoon. >> can you confirm if he is dead? >> not right now. >> and can you tell us if there is a reunification center for the families? >> yes, the reunification center has been establish and the kids have been reunified, and so we are good there. >> any faculty members have been hurt? >> i can't answer that question yet. >> have you made any arrests? >> i can't answer that.
8:11 am
>> we will let you know. we don't know. >> and the department of public safety will push out a message as far as the location and the time of the next press conference and go to the iowa department of public safety website, and it is going to be posted there shortly after noon. >> is there surveillance video available? >> there is nothing more to answer right now. all right. you have been listen toing the news conference with adam infante at 7:37 a.m. local time, and 8:37 locw eastern time, the word of active shooter inside of the school. officer arrived seven minutes later and found multiple gunshot victims and they did not say how many victims or the extent of the injuries, but they told us it would be released later in the day. >> they also said that there is no danger to the public.
8:12 am
they are working to figure out what happened, but they were asked, because the officer, the chief made a statement that notifications have been made, and often when you say that, you think that somebody has perished, but he was pointedly asked if anyone has died and he said no. so that is what i heard from the reporter to the sheriff. i am not sure if that, because he did not have a lot of the details -- >> and one of the questions i heard is the shooter alive or dead, and he said no word on that. the shooter has been neutralized and no further risk and no word if the shoot ser alive or dead, no word on, and no word if there are faculty who were injured, but he did say there were not many people at the school when the shooting took place, and he saw that as good news. no further threat to the public, and he made that abundantly clear. >> they have identified the shooter, and so we don't know
8:13 am
what status of the shooter or the status of the injured are at this point in time. but obviously, families have to be notified as to what happened there before the school starteredstarter started there, and so of course that has to happen. starting with juliette kayyem, and so when you are hearing the details, multiple people injured and shooting inside of the school, and alerted at 7:37, but they don't have a number, what is that telling you? how the police don't know what the number is yet? >> they probably do know what the number is, may not have been able to reach all of the family members, and like you, i am a little bit confused and not that you are confused. >> no, i am. >> confused from the press conference, because you could not hear what he was answering to, but my understanding is no fatalities. this is what is interesting is
8:14 am
that this is explaining sort of the lack of activity of the students or the parents, and this is preschool, and those of us who have high school kids know that there are clubs and newspapers and even sporting training before, and so it would have been a limited target so to speak, and we don't know if this is an employee. and that would be telling and maybe also explain the timing and also the fact that they know who the person is who perpetrated it. so we will be learning more about that, and the key details in terms of are there lots of, of our understanding so far, is if this is a high fatality or high casualty event, and no, that is consistent with what we are seeing, and we don't know the extent of the injuries for the -- nor the gun, and he saidt is a good outcome, and challenging, but there is a lot of people, and multiple people
8:15 am
shot is a good outcome, but we certainly know what he meant which is of course, the alternative is the tragedy. >> and we are wondering just before the news conference started, andy, i was wondering about the parent reunification, and the sheriff said one had been set up, and he believed that everyone had been connected at this point with their families and the students that were there. 7:37 a.m. they got the call, and seven minutes later the police arrive which is a quick response, andy. but there were already victims, gunshot wound victims there when the police arrived. >> yeah, john, as we have seen so many times before, even a quick response is too slow. right? you can never get in front of this. law enforcement will never get in front of the shooter before
8:16 am
they arrive in frand get in fro this, and so this seems a rural place and small town and not talking about the middle of downtown atlanta or memphis or any of the other cities that we have seen, and so that is a pretty quick response. i also noted that he said they were making notifications now. notifications is really something that would happen, you would contact a victim's family members if that victim was deceased or if they were grievously injured and unable to speak for themselves or spirited away to the hospital, and you wanted to tell the family where they are, and so that is certainly another indication that they have multiple victims who are, who were pretty seriously injured. and he also mentioned that they are starting to work backwards which is conducting that investigation that you and i were talking about a minute ago. he said, and we won't know more until we talk with the victims
8:17 am
and the families. so, again there, i think they are just starting to get their hands around this thing, and they don't want to get ahead before speaking to the injured and the deceased, and until the families have been notified. you don't want to ever have people learning about their family members on the news. >> and juliette, before we go to break here and try to get more details, quickly, so what does this tell you before the school started and whoever the shooter is would have known that at 7:37 in this small town, you know, families are not, and there are not a ton of people inside the schoolhouse, and so what does that tell you? is there someone specific or what? >> i mean, there is a range of possibilities just given the timing obviously and so, one could be just the randomness of
8:18 am
someone deciding to shoot in the school at the time that they decided to, but one of the things that i would be looking at from this perspective and someone who is focused on a particular place or group that was meeting at that time, and that is either employees or some student group, because if that is in fact what their purpose was. and just consistent with what andy was saying that, when the sheriff said that they needed to talk to people who were injured about why it would be, it would seem that they have some understanding that this is a focused target for the shooter, and that is consistent with the timing that you would do it before school, and the timing obviously now discloses why we are seeing pictures like this.
8:19 am
and i was surprised that we didn't see any kids, and i thought that maybe they were still under lockdown, and basically they were not there at this stage. look, this is a small community. it is dealing with whatever the numbers are. an absolute tragedy in a high school that is presumably the only school for the community, which is going to be impacted for the couple of days. these are the social consequences of the violence, itself. you know, whether you have one dead, 10 dead or whatever the horrible numbers are, and the ripple effects for these communities in terms of closing of schools, the closing of the community college nearby, commerce and other things are impacted as well. we don't have a way to measure that at least not now. >> yeah, the emotional and mental toll that it takes on everyone, families, community and the teachers and the staff and everybody who is in there is just too high to imagine. juliette kayyem and andrew mccabe, thank you so much.
8:20 am
8:23 am
8:24 am
they got word of it 7:37 local time. and the police arrive seven minutes later and found multiple shooting victims. no word yet on how many or the condition of the people who were shot there although they made it clear that there is no current danger to the community. in other words, this is a secure situation, and no ongoing threat. >> and they did say, too, they have identified the shooter, but we have no details of who that was and whether they were related to thele school in any kind of way. producer for cnn aaron pellish is taking these pictures for us, and thank you for that. and the candidates are in town, and reporters are in town, and producers are in town, because that is where vivek ramaswamy was today, and he has tweeted out that he has sent his prayers to the community and the high school there in perry. aaron, what are you seeing at this hour? anything strike you from the press conference that you were
8:25 am
videotaping? >> yes, sara. it is a calm scene here as it seems that the dallas county sheriff's department said in the press conference a moment ago, they have the scene under control here, and a lot of the law enforcement is still on the ground here. a lot of media here obviously covering the developments as they still unfold. one of the things that struck me as we heard from the dallas county sheriffs is that they got reports of the incident at 7:37 a.m. local time, and that there was a shooting incident at the school, and multiple gunshot victims. i was driving up here as you mentioned for a vivek ramaswamy event taking place in town around 10:00, and the event was scheduled for around 9:00 a.m. local time. and so i was driving up here in between 8:00 and 9:00 heading towards the event, and so i saw
8:26 am
dozens of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel from all across central iowa and the state troopers, polk county which is the county des moines is in, and greene county and nearby county of iowa and urbandale, and west des moines police we have seen on site, and so, law enforcement from all over responding within the hour to this incident. as you said, sara, we are still learning more from the law enforcement here. >> aaron, i know that you have sort of gotten into town the last couple of days, but i am wondering if you know that the hospital, and the one that i found that was a trauma one center, that is all of the way to des moines and that is a 40-minute drive. did you notice anything closer or a hospital, because gunshot wounds require such intense care? >> sara, it is hard to say.
8:27 am
i am not as familiar with the state as some others, and i have spent a lot time here for the political events, but luckily for me, i have not spent a lot of time at the hospital. des moines is the largest city all around, and we have talked about it on the air recently and previously, this is a very small town and less than 8,000 people. des moines is the capital of the state, and about 30 to 45 minutes away, and so those facilities would, i imagine would be the nearest by. as i was driving up here as i said, to cover the vivek ramaswamy event just in the last couple of hours, we saw emts, ambulances driving away from perry, iowa, towards des moines, so that is in all likelihood the direction they were headed. >> yeah. aaron pellish, thank you for doing the triple duty for us today, to give our viewers a

and creepy ads that follow youa from google and other companie. and there's no catch. it's fre. we make money from ads, but they don't follow you aroud join the millions of people taking back their privacy by downloading duckduckgo on all your devices today. all right. the breaking news out of perry, iowa, and we have heard from law enforcement a few minutes ago and they confirmed a shooting at the perry high school. it happened before 8:00 a.m. local time and 7:37 a.m. is when they got the call that there was something going on and the police arrived seven minutes later and found multiple shooting victims at the schoolment we do not know the condition of those victims, and we do not know how many. however, the police did say that because it happened so early, there were not that many people
8:33 am
at the school as it happened. we also know that they know the identity of the shooter, and they say that there is no current threat, the situation is over. back with us is juliette kayyem and andrew mccabe. law enforcement told us later today they would tell us more, and i would imagine that more would be the identity of the shooting, and if there were fatalities, and we just don't know yet. what other information do you expect to hear from them that we will hear from law enforce snmt >> -- enforcement? >> first and foremost, we want to hear about the victims, and those who were killed at the scene and those injured and how and where that took place inside of the school, and as you mentioned, we want to know about the offender. the shooter has been identified, and presumably the identity released at some point, and then
8:34 am
start to understand whether -- >> andy, i have to interrupt you for a moment, because evan perez is telling us that the law enforcement has confirmed the shoot ser er is dead. so we have that information who is getting it right every single time, evan perez, and he saying that they know the shooter is dead. that is the breaking news coming in from the law enforcement official that the shoot er is pronounced dead. >> it is helpful, but there are a lot of questions, were they a student or faculty member or staff at the school. all of those answers will help us to understand better what they might have been trying to accomplish, and was this like we have seen in michigan and memphis and other school shootings, a student who is
8:35 am
trying to cause, you know, as much carnage as they could or was this is a staff member in the middle of a domestic dispute and lashing out against someone they were connected to in that way. so it is a lot of possibilities left on the table, and so it is going to be helpful to hear the sheriff to get up to give us more granularity about what happened and who was injured by it and who committed it. >> and juliette, one thing they have not said explicitly is how the shooter died, but i will note in the press conference, there is not any kind of confrontation between law enforcement and the shooter, and so one might infer that the shooter took his or her own life in the process, correct? >> that would be, i think, a fair interpretation of what was said. they did not talk about any engagement, and they talked about seven minutes between the time of the first alert, a nd te
8:36 am
alert to the time that the officer got to the school. so, obviously, there is a question of the victims of course, and the issue around the family unification at least are to play in the school shooting, because the school was not totally in session. then you are going to look to the perpetrator and then potential motive. this is the first day back after a long while away. i mean, our kids have been out of school for 10 or 12 days, and the question is going to be what happened before or did anything happen over the holidays that might explain why the day one of return would be the day that shooter decided to enter this facility, and then of course, who or what was the target understanding that given the timing of it, this is someone
8:37 am
who if they knew the school would know it was not at max capacity, but if they were an employee or were focused on the club or something like that, that would be something that they would look into in terms of the investigation. >> right. whether or not this is a target, and this is a targeted shooting, and although, we know that there are multiple people who have been shot according to the sheriff. andy mccabe and juliette kayyem, thank you for joining us. this is significant. we have learned that isis has claimed responsibility for twin blasts in iran that killed more than 100 people. we will have more details for you on that, and that is the scene for after it happened. you can see the ambulance coming in there and the huge crowds standing around after the twin blasts happened there and killing more than 100 people, and isis is saying that it is their work. we will be right back.
8:42 am
okay. we have two big breaking news stories for you. one, what is happening in perry high school in perry, iowa, where there are multiple people who have been shot at a high school there. this shooter, we have now confirmed through a law enforcement source through evan perez that the shooter has been killed. we do not know the status of any of those who have actually been shot, who they are, whether they are students or faculty or teachers, and we do not know that information yet. the sheriff is holding that right now as he is trying to contact the family members. we know it happened around 7:37. that the police got there around seven minutes later. we are still waiting for information there for those who are injured. but another mass school shooting and the fourth this year. and one each and everyday if you are looking at the statistical calculation there which is a complete tragedy. and now to the middle east.
8:43 am
isis is now claiming responsibility for that deadly twin blast in iran that happened wednesday. the explosions were at a memorial for iranian military comm comm commander qassim suleimani and t is the deadliest attack since the iranian revolution. >> and isis has claimed responsibility which we discussed a possibility yesterday after the blast yesterday, nic, and explain the dynamics here, and why isis would want to target iran. >> they would want to target iran, because they consider it a sheer theocracy as they describe
8:44 am
them poly atheists, and in the statement claiming responsibility they said they killed 300polyatheist, because they are a sunni organization and at war with iran, and none more than qassim soleimani, and he also led the charge against isis as well. that is why they would want to target him. now, having said that, are they offering evidence in their claim so far that would support their case? i have to say from what we have seen so far, there is not concrete evidence. there is even some discrepancies in what they describe the number
8:45 am
of dead for example is 84 according to iranians and not 300 as isis says. isis often overstates. isis also said that the attack was carried out by two suicide bombers, and with the information that we have from the iranian authorities yesterday is that at least one of the bombs was in a suitcase, and it was remotely detonated. the iranians also blamed israel, the president of iran saying that israel was responsible, and he would pay a price for it. so there are part of this that does not add up, but what is adding up clearly is that the signature of the attack yesterday is not at all the attack of an israeli attack of command figures, but much more the signature of an isis attack, and slashing out and hitting innocent civilians and bystanders which is what seems to have happened at the soleimani mourning yesterday.
8:46 am
>> and i am curious why isis is jumping into the fray now, whether they are responsible or not, but they are claiming responsibility even with the details being off of what they are saying, but why would they jump into this now, knowing that there is the potential of a rej onal war, and it is to blow that up or trying to get attention from the world that they are still around? >> this would have been a target of interest and a target potentially of opportunity where there would have been a large gathering and they knew the leadership of the iranians might have been looking in other directions of mossad operatives, and to have a senior iranian
8:47 am
killed in damascus though israel said it was not killed by one of their air strikes, and the killing of a senior iranian killed by senior iranian-backed militia by the united states, and a full scale attack by iran. this attack by isis may have been trying to jump on and destabilize the situation further. >> nic robertson for us covering the story. again, isis claiming responsible for the twin bombings yesterday. new breaking news involving donald trump. house democrats say they have documents that trump owned properties and received millions of dollars from foreign governments when he was president.

the breaking news this morning out of perry, iowa. multiple people were shot at perry high school early this morning. they did not release a number of victims or the condition of the victims. they did say that they know the identity of the shooter. cnn has since learned that the shooter is now dead. the site has been secured. they say no further danger to the public. we did hear from the sheriff just moments ago. >> approximately 7:37 a.m., we had a radio activation at the high school, which indicated an active shooter situation. officer first arrive d within 7 minutes of that activation and located multiple gunshot v victims. we're still unclear exactly how many are injured or what the extent of those are, but we're working on that now. there's no further danger to the
8:53 am
public. the community is safe. >> no further danger to the public, no word on the number of those shot or their condition now. we are waiting to get that information. law enforcement did say they will hold a news conference later this afternoon on that. stay with cnn for live coverage. some more news that has come out this morning. 5.5 million and then some. that's how much house the democrats say china spent at donald trump's properties during donald trump's time as president. they say they have the financial document to prove that. zachary cohen is following the breaking details. first of all, give us some sense of exact ly what they did find n this report and also the malfeasance of it all, what it means. >> absolutely. this report is based on documents from trump's former accounting firm. they do show that millions of dollars in payments came from
8:54 am
about 20 foreign countries. the vast majority of that sum totalled up by house democrats. the chinese government and state-owned chinese entities did make payments around $5.5 million to trump properties while he was in office. there was properties in d.c. and new york and las vegas. the concern here is that these payments were made in an effort to influence trump's foreign policy. there's part of the constitution that addresses this concern. so it's been something that we have been aware of for a long time. but democrats say they draw parallel between trump's foreign policy decisions and the countries that were making these payments. the trump organization says that trump didn't do anything wrong. he actually donated all of the profits he received from any sort of foreign payments. at the end of the day, it's impossible to tell what, if any, link that exists between foreign
8:55 am
policy decisions that the administration made and those outreach in his payments coming from his countries. >> zachary cohen, those are interesting details. i'm sure there will be more spilling out. we'll keep you posted. you keep us posted. thank you. >> everyone is keeping everyone posted. this morning donald trump's legal team is asking the federal judge in the case to sanction special counsel jack smith. what's going on here? let's get to paula reid for the details. >> what is going on? here the trump lawyers are insisting that the special counsel jack smith and some of the proximate results be severely sanction ed because thy keep making filings in the federal election subversion case. making filings is just what lawyers do. but the federal case is currently on hold. the judge overseeing that case has put a halt on all substantial proceedings. now the special counsel understands this. he knows this in the briefs that he continues to file. he says, i know this is on hold.
8:56 am
but i want to continue to make my filings, to make my arguments so that when this case resumes, once all the appeals are resolved, he believes they will be resolved in his favor, they can get going. he wants to bring this case to trial before november 2024. he's made that clear publicly. he's made that clear in his filings. the trump team argue this is political. they accuse the special counsel of trying to score cheap political points by continueing to make these filings. many of which were critical of former president trump. they are even arguing that the prosecutors are make ing the docket, so where all the filings end up, a political arm of the biden campaign. it's unclear how the judge will rule here. we know the judge is also eager to move this case along as quickly as possible. she can't do anything until these larger questions, constitutional questions about any immunity trump may have until those are resolved. at this point, it's unclear how long it will take to resolve
8:57 am
those and if this trial will go before the 2024 election. >> we have about 20 seconds is or less here. the judge is the one who will rule on this latest filing from the trump team trying to sanction jack smith? >> she's the one who has put this case on hold. so this is her pause. the trump lawyers are arguing they are not honoring her halt on this case. now it's unclear if she will say stop making the filings. or if she will say i'm not going to punish anyone, but it's unclear how she will rule. >> got it. okay. paula reid, thank you very much for that. obviously, keep us posted when you hear the next step. >> she did that in 15 seconds or less. we have had had so much breaking news for you today. much of it will likely come up, though, in tonight's back to back cnn town halls with ron desantis and nikki haley, the two of them are the only ones
8:58 am
that qualified. they will be taking questions directly from iowa voters. kaitlan collins is moderating the conversation with desantis at 9:00 p.m. and then erin burnett at 10:00 p.m. with nikki haley. >> thank you all for joining u on this s busy mornining. thisis is "cnn n news centraral" "insnside polititics" is up p n.
