2:01 am
good morning, everyone. so glad you're with us on a big tuesday in america. i'm poppy harlow with phil mattingly. the race to the white house is heading to new hampshire. that's where kasie hunt has moved to. and donald trump heads into the new hampshire primary with a dominant victory in the iowa caucuses winning by an overwhelming margin. it's a clear sign he has an iron grip on the republican party and america is now one step closer to a trump/biden rematch. >> for months now, iowa republicans have been telling pollsters they wanted donald trump. last night, they showed us they want ed donald trump.
2:02 am
cnn projecting ron desantis has come in second place with nikki haley. take a look at the. of iowa. it's a sea of red, and that means it's a sea of trump wins. county by county, winning all of them except for one where nikki haley is leading by a single vote. now trump dominated iowa, even though he didn't spend much time there compared to his rooilss. he's here's a breakdown of his campaign events. in his victory speech, he praised desantis and haley as smart and capable people, acting as if they conceded and the race is a done deal. >> you want to congratulate ron and nikki for having a good time together. we're all having a good time together. and i think they both did very well. i really do. they both did very well. >> we have team coverage from iowa, new hampshire, our political analysts standing by to break down this landslide victory for trump. let's start with iowa.
2:03 am
he did better than that poll. pretty much as expected. >> that's right. topping more than 50% of the vote here in iowa, it was a commanding and historic win for former president trump. >> reporter: an overwhelming victory for donald trump. >> we want to thank the great people of iowa. >> reporter: the former president winning the iowa caucuses by a considerable margin. solidifying his status as the front runner of the 2024 republican presidential nomination. speaking from his iowa headquarters, trump gave a rare message of unity. >> this is time now for everybody, our country to come together. we want to come together, whether it's republican or democrat or liberal or conservative. >> reporter: ron desantis nearly beat out nikki haley for second place. >> in spite of all of that that they threw at us, everyone
2:04 am
against us, we've got our ticket punch ed out of iowa. >> reporter: a desantis senior campaign official says he will stay in the race. >> people want to have hope for this country's future. and that's what we represent. we represent a chance to reverse the madness that we have seen in this country. >> reporter: despite placing third, nikki haley predicts that this race will come down to her and trump. based on recent positive polling out of new hampshire. >> when you lock at how we're doing, in new hampshire, in south carolina, i can safe ly sy tonight, iowa made this republican primary a two-person race. >> haley is continuing her message of leadership. >> 70% of americans don't want another trump/biden rematch.
2:05 am
>> reporter: entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy suspending his campaign for president after placing a disappointing fourth. he called trump to offer his endorsement. >> we're going to do our part now going forward to make sure that america first lives on. to make sure that donald trump is successful as the next president of the united states. >> reporter: entrance polling providing insights into how trump locked in his victory. two-thirds of caucus goers believe that biden did not legitimately win the 2020 election. despite no evidence of widespread voter fraud. and nearly half of caucus goers say they identify with trump's maga movement. >> we have an invasion of millions and millions of people that are coming into our country. we can't have that. we can't have that. it's not sustainable as a country. it's horrible. >> reporter: all three candidates will end up in new hampshire tonight. nikki haley for her part went
2:06 am
dire directly there from iowa last night. we're going to see ron desantis stop in south carolina before going to new hampshire later today. and with former president trump, for whom the courthouse has become a central piece of hisment campaign, he's stopping in new york for appearance as part of the e. jean carroll civil damages trial before heading to new hampshire later today. >> it's a great point. he chose not to go to her initial trial, but yet after this huge win in iowa, he chooses to be in that courtroom today. thank you for the reporting. >> kasie hunt is also in new hampshire and also with is bakari sellers, adam kinzinger and kasie hunt, ipt to start with you. you have done the overnight flight. there has been a frame by donald trump and his supporters that this is done. this is a done deal. this is over. tell me what you're hearing from your republican sources on the ground in new hampshire. is that the case?
2:07 am
>> reporter: i think the reality here is that it's more of the same than different. i think there's a real sense that had nikki haley manage d t edge out ron desantis, she would be coming into new hampshire with a much more significant head of steam than she is right now. i can tell you the last time i landed on this tarmac here in new hampshire after iowa, it was 2016. ted cruz was landing. all kinds of excitement. the only person to come with us this time was nikki haley, with who we ran into at the small airport where charter planes fly out of in des moines. she was heading here. her staff seemed to have a steely mood about them the. it was obviously the end of a very long night, but i wouldn't say that you could the really tell when a candidate and a group of staff feel like they have absolutely won the night. usually somebody is looking for a glass of wine.
2:08 am
that wasn't the feeling among her staffers, as they headed out into the night. and they have a chance here, if it she can pull off -- the polling showed her within single digits of trump. that was before chris christie dropped out. if she can perform that way here in a week, then perhaps there will be some. but i got to tell you. doesn't this feel like the conversation we have been having for a year about trump's d dominance in the primary? >> it sure does. those numbers are stunning. yes, it's the solid red iowa, but of 6% don't think biden won legitimately. and nikki haley, not exceeding desantis. where does this leave us? >> that number that they support donald trump if he was convicted, that's low than republican candidates run ning
2:09 am
for president. almost all of them except chris christie raised their hand and said they would support him. that's where the republican party is. if i'm nikki haley, i'm feeling pretty good about things today. politics is so often about the expectations game. maybe your expectations were built up a little too high because of the last polling, but the reality is she had no organization in iowa. she didn't do a lot of campaigning in iowa. a lot of people said she made a gaffe when she said new hampshire corrects iowa. she was probably right. and to come the 2 points away from ron desantis, who put all of his eggs in 99 baskets and didn't get any of the 99 counties in iowa. and nikki haley winning oneself. ron desantis has to do explaining why his campaign continues to exist. >> she's right when she says this is a two-person race. >> she doesn't have to explain why she's still in it. ron desantis does. he's a mini trump. >> you have been on tv all
2:10 am
night. i'm going to keep coming back to you. the question i had, nikki haley in had her remarks, saying it's a two-person race. but also the framing that voters don't want the rematch. she called it a nightmare. listen. >> trump and biden both lack a vision for our country's future. because both are consumed by the past, by investigations, by grievances. our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the trump/biden nightmare. >> it's actually good messaging. if you're going to attack donald trump, it has to be like a 50,000-foot view. you're not going to out abortion donald trump like desantis is trying to do. he killed roe v. wade. you're not going to out immigration.
2:11 am
so you have to have these large issues, which nikki haley is trying to do. i think it's extremely late. i think it's not a two-person race. i think it's a one-person race. i'm not sure why ron desantis is going to south carolina and then new hampshire. he needs to go straight to tallahassee. and i think the only thing -- >> for the primary? >> probably just go home really. the other thing is that he crushed governor reynolds operation in iowa. she has governor sununu in new hampshire. it's going to be a nip and tuck. but then he's going to crush her operation in south carolina. so i i don't see a path for anybody. this is just a vanity project. >> lindsey graham says this thing is over. trump has this locked in. >> i'm agreeing with lindsey gra the ham. >> at 5:00 a.m. >> mark it down.graham. >> at 5:00 a.m.
2:12 am
>> mark it down. >> for all the republicans that came out and said they support trump and taken their gavel, the list goes on. i feel like i'm taking crazy pills because i don't understand how you can go with a straight face to talk to your constituents and say, yep, i support this guy who just talked poorly about me, my family and also he's got 91 counts against him. we are in a really sad time in our politics if we think this is all okay. to nikki haley's point, the trump/biden matchup and doing this all over again, people don't want it. they are not excited. unfortunately, i think when you don't have enthusiasm to dpo out and vote, somebody like donald trump is going to swoop in and feed off that disappointment and capitalize on people being frustrated and angry about
2:13 am
different topics. and these members of congress and the republican who is have just sold their principles, it's really sad. >> besides my disappointment the that the first reference on this show was not made by me, which i failed, can i take the other side. nikki haley east campaign had a state of the race memo. you could view donald trump as an incumbent. an incumbent that has 30% of the party that doesn't feel like voters that feel if convicted they don't want to support him. that's problematic. when you have the numbers split, we say a huge weakness here. why is that not the case this time around? >> because no one else in the field has shown that they have the strength to beat him is the reality. it's absolutely the case that
2:14 am
every republican that i talk to who would refer trump not get the nomination is arguing that republicans in iowa approximately said they didn't want him, but as we just spent the last five minutes discussing, it's really unclear that anyone who has actually run against him can to it now the run thing i'm interested in, and at the beginning of the primary, polling showed that republicans were open to a trump alternative. nobody really took trump on directly. now you have this slightly new message from nikki haley that is very tailored to new hampshire. that trump/biden nightmare, not something she could really say in iowa where it was harder to attack trump, but here don't forget undeclired voters can vote in the primary. and polling shows overwhelmingl they are unhappy with that choice. she's going to have an opportunity to try to convince them that, hey, you should come and give me a shot basically. but again, we run straight into
2:15 am
the rest of the map. it just gets so much harder. and i think for desantis, bakari was talking about him going to south carolina. if you look at the polls in south carolina, he's down at like 6%. nikki haley is around 20%. my big question going in here is how long does do ron desantis donors continue to fund him? egoprevents people from getting out of politics, but running out of money can end presidential campaigns. >> nothing you can do about that. thank you. stay with us. we have a lot ahead. we're going to dig into the iowa results. each candidate performed well and what that could tell us about future primaries. also looking ahead to new hampshire, how voters feel about the final results of the 2024 election season and what's ahead. >> they have all been watching
2:16 am
2:20 am
it would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world and all of the death and destruction witnessing. >> that was president trump last night attempting to send a message of unity after a landslide victory in the iowa caucuses. trump finished the caucuses with a historic 51% of the vote. you're looking at it here. significantly more than ron desantis and nikki haley. so how did donald trump do it? everywhere you see red is a county that donald trump won. you might think donald trump is dominant in the republican party. it lacked like it was going to look like this. this is why this is a surprise. this is why the trump team feels like they hit exactly the type of place they needed to be.
2:21 am
flash back to 2016. everywhere you see yellow, those are counties that donald trump lost. let's go back to 2024. all of them except for one, donald trump won think about the overperformance where he did better than he did in 2016. trump outperforming 2016 literally all 99 counties he did better than in 2016. here's maybe a different way to put this. where did trump underperform in 2016. that would be none. that's 10% higher than anybody else in the actual primary. every county except for two. and it's a college town. and in johnson county, nikki haley won by all of 1 vote. that's not a sweeping victory based on my math.
2:22 am
not a math guy, but pretty confident in that. how did he do it? two things we were watching coming into this caucus experience. one was up here. the northwest area of the state. this is gel call country. this is country that donald trump struggled with in 2016. donald trump winning all four of those counties. flip back to 2016, he lost all of them. he for the most part didn't really place well at all not even in the top three in some of those counties. flip to 2024, he wins by 14 points. this is the type of county that ron desantis focused heavily on. donald trump blew him out of the water. what about the suburbs? this is an area that marco rubio polled off. this was supposed to be where hnikki haley had big wins. not this time around. in 13 of the counties cnn labels as suburbs, donald trump won 12 of them. only losing 1.
2:23 am
back in 2016, he lost 10 of those 13 counties. so across the board, whether it's evangelicals, educated voters, donald trump winning almost every single place 98 of 99 counties. that's why he won 51% of the vote. >> phil, thank you so much. let's bring in bakari sellers. not only did he win, but he won so many evangelical voters in iowa. he took them. why? >> he's been able to have those voters really identify with him. donald trump is not angel call by any means. he's not a strong christian, but religious conservatives identify with trump as a lifestyle, as a brand. that's been very hard to shake. it's why the counties that phil pointed out in northwestern iowa turned so dramatically. i think it's what's going to make not so much new hampshire,
2:24 am
but south carolina very interesting. if nikki haley has a strong showing in new hampshire, religious conservatives in south carolina, we can learn a lot with what happened in iowa. >> bh you look at the independent vote and the moderate vote. the subus, the college educated voter, trump picked up every county except for one. how does that not translate into problems for nikki haley? >> in iowa 65 plus was the majority of the group that voted in the caucus. and 97% of them were white. so in new hampshire, they have long said more than half of the gop voters have said they would take anybody but trump. it does help her even beyond the suburbs, it does help her coming at it from a different approach.
2:25 am
she's now trying to talk about trump and biden nightmare. it's helpful to her messaging. in iowa i think their focus was just trump. it doesn't matter. they put immigration as number one. that's a stark difference. >> if this is a head to head, they are polling so terribly. >> absolutely. >> doug brought up what does this portend for nikki haley and trump in south carolina? tim scott is a big question mark this morning. our reporting is he may officially get behind trump. it would be a big blow to nikki haley. >> every one of the major political figures in south carolina outside of a few state house members, they actually went to iowa to caucus with her. those are good friends to have.
2:26 am
but tim scott is an interesting character. he's the only one who has that grav us to and stayed out of it. tim scott also, whether or not you're talking to people in trump orbit, you'd probably know this better than i, but people talk about ben carson, and they talk about tim scott for vice president of the united states. those are some of the favorites that are floating. what does tim scott do? it really is a death nail to nikki haley if she does well in new hampshire and then tim takes the wind out of her sails like that. you have to think about their history. she's the person who appointed him to the united states senate. so it's a very close relationship. we go back to 2010 when tim got elected to the state house. we were all in the state house together. so that's a very fascinating diementalic. but he is that evangelical. he does speak to what the future of the republican party hopes to be. he is a conservative. he does have opportunity zones and he can talk about issues
2:27 am
that matter. he supports donald trump, i think it's over already, but you can start packing up the bus. >> if we go back to 2016, the jeb bush campaign loathed marco rubio for the shear audacity of run ning. that same dynamic was true with the haley and scottment c campaigns. >> thank you. appreciate it. today at noon, don't miss "inside politics" with dana bash. she's going to sit down with nikki haley and governor chris sununu. it's been more than 700 days since new york city has seen 1 inch of snow. that streak could end today. the forecast, next.

win in iowa, although ron desantis and nikki haley finished 30 points behind them, some supporters believe their candidate still has a fighting chance considering the last time iowa chose a republican nominee for president was in 2000. gary tuckman reports. >> reporter: we watched cnn's coverage with somg of the americans next up in the presidential norminating proces. republicans from new hampshire. >> bring on the great state of new hampshire. >> i would say that iowa and then new hampshire are kicking off a republican revolution. >> reporter: all very enthusiastic republican voters. two of these ten are prepared to vote for donald trump next week. regarding his iowa victory -- >> i expected it. i'm happy with it. >> very happy with the the results. >> reporter: one of the ten will cast a vote for ron desantis. >> how do you feel about the second place finish? >> i'm sykesed by it.
2:33 am
it's a great turnout. a great result. but again, for me, whoever wins the primary, i'm supporting. so let's get to new hampshire. >> you heard nikki haley just say while we were watching that it's a two-person race even though she came in third. do you buy that? >> not at all. he showed he's a viable contender. it's the first stop. so let's see what happens in new hampshire. i think he's going to do great. >> reporter: three people were undecided or disclosing their vote. nikki haley gt the most votes with four. >> i thought she would be a close second to donald trump, but i did not envision her losing by that much. disappointed in the results. >> how do you feel? >> i'm more optimistic with tonight considering how much time and money that ron desantis spent in iowa. i think she faired really well. and now she's coming to new hampshire she's going to do very well. >> if donald trump is the nominee of the republican party, are you all prepared to vote for
2:34 am
donald trump? >> absolutely. >> yes. >> anyone not definitive about voting for donald trump? >> not definitive. >> tell the me why, bob. >> i expect my president to act and conduct the affairs of our government and n a presidential manner. i don't think he's been a good reflection of the kind of character i would like to see. >> are any of you also troubled with his character? >> yes. >> but you're still ready to vote for him? because you're not going to vote for biden. who are you thinking of voting for if it's trump and biden? >> i think i would look to an independent candidate, who came close to my republican pr principles. >> like who? >> maybe someone like joe manchin would be someone i would consider. >> joe manchin is a democrat who is not running for reelection but hasn't ruled out running for
2:35 am
president as a third party candidate. these new hampshire republicans tell us this about the iowa caucuses. >> it's a good start. >> will you all be voting on tuesday? >> absolutely. >> obviously, donald trump is in the driver's seat, but the people in our group who support hnikki haley and ron desantis al say they are keeping the faith. >> thank you. it's always interesting. particularly interesting is the amount of voters he talked to that raise their hand and say character matters, but the same voters said still if they are unconfidentable with trump's things he says. >> it reminds me of the conversation with the pastors yesterday. >> right. character is not the most important thing for those v voters. >> we have a lot ahead in the race for the white house. kasie hunt with us in manchester. >> the big question this morning. does new hampshire give nikki haley any chance to change the

>> allison chinchar, big news for kids who like snow. kitschasie hunt, where you there's usually some snow. you're coming from the coldest place in the history of the world. it's probably kind of nice there. >> reporter: i got my iphone forecast back here. 21 degrees. it's basically 35 degrees warmer here than it was when we spoke yesterday. i seriously took my coat off when i got off the plane. this feels great. but with the iowa caucuses behind them, there's much more than just the weather that's different here. republican candidates are eyeing the state of new hampshire. there's a different electorate here. there are different voting pattern here's. and now there's going to be a slightly different candidate shield as well. here to talk about how this race is going to be different in new hampshire is michelle price of the associated press. and emery timmons for the new

hampshire bulletin, who has covered this state for decades. thank you so much for being here so early. michelle, let me start with you. what has been your sense? you have been here reporting on the ground. we are only starting to get a sense of how iowa has affected how things are going to move here, but is there still, do you think, as much promise around nikki haley's campaign as some of her supporters thought there might be here? >> i think there's still promise. she did do -- when she started, there was not an expectation she would be that close to ron desantis in iowa. this is a state that has not taken its cues from how iowa's caucuses turned out. so there's still room for her. some of the latest polling we saw last week showed that she has narrowed that gap with donald trump. there's a real but very narrow path for her to cut into that inevitability. the question is what happens after new hampshire.
2:44 am
>> you have covered the state for a long time. you have a good feel for how momentum moves around horror. what's your sense? >> i think it's very different here. we have such a different electorate. we have our undeclared outnumber republicans and democrats. we saw so many many shift to undeclared in october. we think think that's because they want to vote in the republican primary. the independent nature of our voters and we're not religious. that's a big difference here. so i think haley has a lot of promise here. i think attention now, biden supporters are thinking writing her in. >> i think you it's a plilt little complicated on the democratic side. president biden is not on the ballot. they have mounted a write-in
2:45 am
campaign. but a lot of those voters want to make a difference in the republican primary instead, which makes sense to me if you want to come up and be able to participate in this. let's talk a little bit about some of the messaging here. while donald trump was up on stage saying more things about his opponents than any of us have heard in recent weeks, he is still on the air attacking nikki haley. look at his latest campaign ad. >> americans were promised to secure retirement. nikki haley's plan ends that. >> what we do know is 65 is way too low. we need to increase that. >> haley's plan cuts social security benefits for average americans. >> effective? >> we'll see. last night he was calling for unity. he was calling for the other candidates to drop out and get
2:46 am
behind him, but his message is still a divisive one. hr word last night was the trump/biden nightmare rematch. this is a different electorate. they are looking at different issues. this is a different process than iowa. it's not the most activists. it's a more general election that people can can come out. it's a different group. >> you mention ed that message that haley hit on. she's also put this up in a an ad, which is telling because that means they are putting money behind the message. >> the two most dislike hadded politicians in america, trump and biden, both are consumed by chaos. negativity and grievances of the past. the better choice for a better america, nikki haley. >> look at that. those trump and biden next to each other, i haven't seen
2:47 am
anything like that. maybe she feels freed up to make that contrast more aggressively. >> i think there is a very strong anti-trump sentiment here. we saw governor sununu endorse haley. he's been a voice against trump. so i'm not sure that's persuasive. they already know that's the line up that we're going to see, so i i don't just see a playing that stroongly here. we'll see. >> but there's a reason they are putting it up. how do you see it? >> there's also you think about abortion here. this is a state where the abortion issue is going to play differently than in iowa. donald trump has been on the campaign trail taking credit for having overturned roe v. wade. that could hurt him here. haley is starting to snack on the age issue. this is a state that voted for trump in the past. we had the governor say he would endors him and support him he
2:48 am
has endorsed hah lee now. >> it seemed even in the event that donald trump is convicted, which really is -- big picture, just to put a button on it, donald trump came out of iowa as strong a position as he possibly could have. what does that mean here in new hampshire? are there going to be more republicans who are going to say, he's going to be our guy and i'm going to go with it, or -- one of the things i like about covering new hampshire politics is sometimes nikki haley said it, they correct iowa's results. they seem to want to stick it to whatever the broader narrative is. do you see that happening here? >> new hampshire relishes their role. they ask tough questions of the candidates. this is kind of the last chance for them the to pierce that inevitability. >> thank you very much. we really appreciate it. tonight, ron desantis is going to answer questions
