7:00 pm
was arnold schwarzenegger shaken down at an airport today? that's what a source close to him is alleging tonight after the former california governor, movie star, was detained by customs more than two hours in munich for allegedly failing to declare a luxury watch upon arrival. a watch i should note that he owns, according to this source. that source says the actor was brought to a bank to prepay potential taxes on the time piece. the terminator does not appear to be too fazed by what happened to him. he posted this picture afterward. we'll keep you updated on that important story. thank you for joining us us for
7:01 pm
this busy new hour. a brand new episode of "kiking charles" starts right now. >> we've got a couple questions for you. >> she said this country has never been racist. >> there is been a history of racism in the united states. and unfortunately, it continues today. >> i think that's completely false. >> this country was built on racist policy. >> it's too cold to what? >> to hang out and chat for too long. >> being from canada -- >> you don't even have a jacket on. >> from the cnn studios in new york city, it's king charles. >> not going to waste your time. >> you can call never gail. >> i'm a karaoke singer.
7:02 pm
>> tonight from the new york time, the comedians, plus actress nash. king charles starts now. >> going in, going in. >> oh, yeah! 2024 is here. this is our first show of the year. we're glad to be back. we know you all really watched it. we're ready to chart the new year off right. >> i say here's to more in 2024. it just caught me. you said i love karaoke. do you do karaoke? >> i do. i do frank sinatra. >> what is his song that you do? >> i do new york, new york and apply way. i've been doing king brown. >> i love him. >> i've been doing heaven my last appearances. i'm a big king brown fan.
7:03 pm
i love karaoke. >> do you care to share with the class? >> nobody does karaoke sober. >> listen, i do karaoke sober if i do it. i have a terrible voice but i love karaoke. i say here's to more in 2024. i don't have any new years resolutions. do you have one? >> you know i'm trying to give up diet coke. >> how many diet coax have you had in the last hour? number one, how many diet cokes do you drink in a day? >> 15 to 20. i'm trying. i'm not a addict. >> 15 to 20 a day? >> yeah. i've only had, since we got here at 3:00, i've only had like eight. >> two rules. this is not good for you. honestly. this is not good for you. >> it tastes so good though. i just love diet coke. i really do. >> we have so much to get to tonight. people say to me, i watch the show. i really like the show.
7:04 pm
people ask me all the time. are you worried about what charles will say? i was on amtrak, tom, i think it was his name, he said he's like a muffler. you don't know was going to come out. i always say this. charles, you know what you're doing at all time. you never say anything just to be provocative. >> 100%. i know, number one, what i want to say. >> yes. >> and i know what the reaction will be. what i try to do, to be honest with you. i know if i'm going to start a fire. i really just try to start a conversation. >> yes. >> you're not a right or wrong all the time bust part of being in our position, i just want to throw it out there and then let's have a conversation about it. i know, i always know the reaction. >> that's what i want people to know. there's no -- you are very authentic. you don't put on airs and you always speak the truth as you see it. >> it is your truth. some people think when they speak, it's the gospel.
7:05 pm
your truth is only your truth. >> just because i say it doesn't mean it. >> doesn't make it true. >> we have a lot to get to when you think about speaking the truth. we saw former president trump score a very decisive win in the caucus. we will hear about what to expect going forward. she's covered him a long time. she knows all things when it comes to donald trump. looking forward to that. we just saw roy wood jr. he's here. he's become one of our unofficial king charles analysts until somebody else gives him a show. there's an opening on comedy central. >> he's never introduced me to trevor noah. he's on my bucket list. >> we would like to have him here. we could pick up the phone and maybe he'll be here. he'll be here with jordan klepper. their experience with comedy, tv, and roy had a big moment the other day on the emmy stage
7:06 pm
because he won an emmy for the trevor noah show. the entire political world has moved into the tuny state of new hampshire. we have to play something. i know you all saw this. what nikki haley said this week. roll time, please. >> we're not a racist country, brian. we've never been a racist country. our goal is to make sure today is better than yesterday. >> we asked people out on the street about that. we didn't find anyone that could agree with that. >> not anybody with common sense. i've been having a hard time to decide who will i vote for. nikki haley is the leader in the clubhouse. >> she was the leader in your clubhouse. >> she's 100% if you forget about slavery, jim crow, segregation, antisemitism, asian hate that's been going on in this country. america has been smooth sailing. >> yeah. >> i think a lot of people were surprised. >> first of all, you can't be
7:07 pm
surprised. that was just stupid. america was built on racism. first of all -- >> america was certainly built on slavery. certainly that. >> yeah. you can criticize a country. this is the greatest country in the world. you can still criticize it. anybody who thinks we don't have racism, you turn on the tv. every single day there's racism. for her, somebody who wants to be the president of the united states to say something that stupid. that's just stupid. when you heard it, you're like, i wish i could go back on my tv. >> to rewind it. >> you can't think that. you can't think that racism doesn't exist in this country. you know, right now, like i said, america was built on racism. segregation, jim crow, slavery, even notice we've got antisemitism through the roof. the last couple years the asian people have been mistreated.
7:08 pm
>> she has a town hall tomorrow night. >> do you know what i want to do? i want all the black people in new york. we're going up to new hampshire. we'll have the whole audience black. that's what we'll do. when jake tapper says we've got a question. we'll all raise our hand at the same time. it's cold out here. >> something tells me there aren't very many black people in new hampshire. so you might have to come from new york. >> i think the reason she said everything is rosy, she's been in iowa and new hampshire. she hasn't seen any black people. i'm so disappointed that she said that. it's 100% wrong. >> i would like to see her address that. talk about a costly mistake. arnold schwarzenegger, we all know him. he was detained at a munich airport the other day for more than two hours. why? he fail to declare a watch reportedly valued at more than $20,000 upon his arrival. has this ever happened to you? i've gone to an airport and they
7:09 pm
say do you have anything to declare? i always say, no, i don't. most of the time, i really don't. has this ever happened to you? >> it happens all the time. you have to learn to lie. >> charles! >> when you go to a foreign country, you have to spend the whole night before peeling off the cuban cigar labels. when the guy asks you, are these cubans? no. they're not. they're not cuban. if you have a nice watch, no, i already had that watch. you have to lie. >> or, or, or, or you could just declare it. >> no. you have to pay taxes on it then. trust me. we pay enough taxes. >> so you're encouraging people to lie. >> they do it all the time. >> well, i have to say, i was on a plane. normally if you're traveling out of the country, you cannot travel with more than $10,000 in cash. i never have $10,000 in cash. i was on a plane with oprah. she had $10,000 in cash and you're supposed to declare it.
7:10 pm
it was all the -- i don't like entourage but very close friends. she said i have to declare it. i said it's your money. it doesn't make sense to me when it's your money. split it up. give me $2,000. give them $2,000. i'm a law-abiding citizen. no one long. she said i'll know. so she declared it. >> i knew oprah was too good to be true. that broke my heart right there. >> my point is she does the right thing even when no one is looking and i am a law-abiding citizen. i would have given you $2,000. me $3,000. >> i would have did that, too. >> that's what i would have done. coming up next, fresh off his victory in the iowa caucus, we'll talk to someone who won a literal pulitzer. maggie haberman. lots of people have lots of questions.
7:11 pm
7:12 pm
7:13 pm
7:14 pm
we are very excited about our next guest. her name is maggie haberman of
7:15 pm
the "new york times." she's the author of the best-selling book, yep, best-selling book, confidence man. the making of donald trump and the breaking of america. welcome. i'm glad you're here. i've admired you a very long time. you literally wrote the book on trump. today we saw he almost got kicked out of the court for his very disruptive behavior. he gave a speech attacking the judge and then he goes outside and talks to the press. do you think the new press rallies, we used to cover the rallies. now he come out of court and everybody -- well, not everybody but he gets a lot of coverage when he comes out of the courtroom. >> they are indistinguishable. he fundraises off the legal cases. this was a civil case. he didn't have to be there. he chose to be there. most of his supporters don't care about the difference. they hear noise that he's under
7:16 pm
fire and they tune in that way and they give him money that way. he is really leaning into this. he has learned the lesson that there is a benefit to him politically. >> today in court he seemed to want to get kicked out of court. can you talk about what happened? >> he went to court -- >> he seems to deliberately taunt the judge. >> it seemed that way to he many. this is the civil trial with e. jean carroll who accused him of rape. in this case, he showed up for her testimony. so instead of him talking about the testimony, we're talking about the fact that he was making noises. he was overheard whispering to his lawyer. the judge who is a very serious judge. he's been on the bench a very long time and it is a federal court. not the same as a state court where things tend to be a little looser. this judge gave him warnings something to the effect of, i know you want to get thrown out and i'm not going to do that. and trump responded, i would
7:17 pm
love that. i suspect that's true. he would have liked to have been thrown out. heads he wins, tails, the other side loses. >> how long have you been covering politics? >> 20 some odd years. >> have you ever, and i trust your expertise, seen candidates like him, you either love him or you hate him. there is no middle ground. his people love him and everybody else hates him. have you ever seen this type of firestorm? >> the only close to polarizing figure like trump that i have seen ever at any level is rudolph giuliani who i covered for the final three years of his administration and then his presidential campaign which was very different. he was covered post 9/11 in a different way nationally. at city hall, he was incredibly pole ever aizing. he made a number of racist statements. he was constantly at odds with black leaders.
7:18 pm
he was constantly reflexively pro cop no matter what the decide involving cops was. and that's the only thing that i can remember like this. but even still, it doesn't come close. >> this is what i struggle with. i'm curious about how you handle this. i always think that you're always entitled to your own opinion but you're not entitled to your own set of facts. how do you cover something where he's very fluid with the truth as we know, and it doesn't matter what he says. it doesn't matter that people will just believe anything that he says, even when it has been proven not to be true. how do you cover someone, or how could you present stories when the facts don't matter? >> so in the case of -- >> is it hard for you? >> i think it is hard that there is no longer an objective fact set agreed upon in this country. that became clear if 2016 that things were head that had way. it has devolved much worse since then. one of the starkest examples is
7:19 pm
since he left office, since he's been telling his election lies about 2020 relentlessly, and he won't stop doing it and i don't think he will stop doing it in this campaign. the number of republicans who believe his version of the events, the election and about what happened on january 6th has really changed. so that's the starkest example. it's incumbent upon us to tell the cleanest, clearest version of the truth that we can. >> does that matter? >> well, it matters in terms of how we do our jobs. that's our job. and how many people understand that or hear that, we can't do anything about it. all we can do is make sure that our stories are checked out and clear. >> have we ever had a candidate win a nomination and never go to a debate? >> i can't think of anyone like this. he's running as if he's an incumbent. >> and not doing any debates has not hurt him. >> not doing any debates.
7:20 pm
doing minimal events in iowa. he did close to 30 events but that's nothing close to what the other candidates did. it is unprecedented and almost entirely, he does have a base of support. but this has galvanized his supporters in ways that did not become clear until the summer. >> i've heard supporters say, listen. someone even that he may be morally bankrupt. i may not agree with how he conducts himself but i like his policies. sometimes he behaves in ways we would not want our children to behave. telling the truth has always been most important to most parents i know. or the way you treat people and talk to people and about people matters. he behaves in ways that many people would not want their parents to behave. but people say, yeah, but i like his policies. is that where we are? >> everything is divided by not just how you view certain
7:21 pm
policies over behavior or quote, unquote right and wrong. his supporters would say what he does is right. because what he is doing impacts them in the way that they want and makes their lives better. >> you wrote a book about him. do you have a rapport with him? you seemed to. >> i covered him and i dealt with him a lot as a subject i covered. he was very angry about the book. i had a lot of reporting in it that made him very upset and he has continued to vent that. but the way he is, he will always engage with a reporter eventually if he sees some reason to so he called me the other day. >> he called you the other day? >> yeah. for the first time in a long time. he wanted to talk about these cases and these trials. i was writing a story about how politics and the courts would converge again in january. a couple weeks ago. and he called to say that he wanted to attend all these trials, and to talk about his attacks on the judge in the civil case.
7:22 pm
to talk about e. jean carroll. much of what i didn't report. on he thinks he's his own best defender and you will see more of that. >> one final question. as a mom -- >> your son dash is here tonight. >> as a mom, your kids will grow up in the next few years, are you hopeful about the next year? >> i think this is going to be a pretty bleak campaign. on many levels. i think that the way that our campaigns are fought now are all about who you hate and who hates you back. and i think you are going to see that to the nth degree. >> thank you. coming up next, comedians roy wood jr. and jordadan klkle.
7:23 pm
7:24 pm
7:25 pm
7:26 pm
i think he's having a midlife crisis i'm not. you got us t-mobile home internet lite. after a week of streaming they knocked us down... ...to dial up speeds. like from the 90s. great times. all i can do say is that my life is pre-- i like watching the puddles gather rain. -hey, your mom and i procreated to that song. oh, ew! i think you've said enough. why don't we just switch to xfinity like everyone else? then you would know what year it was. i know what year it is. welcome back. as we all know, it's stumping season and it's not just nikki haley, donald trump and biden.
7:27 pm
others are on the road, too, talking to voters on their america for the last time tour. that's quite the title. america for the last time tour. just rolls off the tongue. >> it rolls off, doesn't it? >> you may know them from comedy center's show. roy and jordan, we welcome you back. we should say congratulations. trevor noah won an emmy. you were part of that team. >> yes. from me, too. i'm sorry you didn't. >> you could have come over to the show. it's right up the street! >> we ain't right around the corner. thanks for having me. ask gayle. >> you have trevor's phone number? >> i'm black. >> i was going to say, share that with me. >> we'll talk later about that. >> i'm black, too.
7:28 pm
we'll see what we can do. okay. maggie haberman was here before the break. did anything jump out ought about the political season, the campaign? roy? >> i think maggie was spot on talking about how emotions are driving the voter base now and not necessarily policy. >> truth don't matter. truth stopped mattering like five, six, seven years ago. nobody cares about truth. that's my guy or that's not my guy. we've been out doing q & as with some of the audiences. we're out in middle america. i've never seen people more unexcited -- >> are they unexcited? >> it looks like it will be trump versus biden and nobody gets excited about it. nobody wants this rematch. >> on either side. >> i think on the trump side. trump has his voters. he's had his voters. >> the trump voters seem pretty excited.
7:29 pm
>> they've already bought the hats. they're re-buying the hats. i talked to a man who bought a hat every single month. they just keep rebooting. on the left we're definitely talking to people on our shows who are more progressive and they want any other choice but biden and they don't feel he's a strong enough candidate. which is a bummer. he has the whole hunter biden situation which in and of itself will be an al abbatross for the. >> it seems like everybody wants somebody younger. here's my question. how is it that biden is considered old but trump isn't? >> well -- >> he's like three, four years younger than biden. >> yeah. but age is different. one guy looks a lot younger. acts a lot younger. maybe to a fault. they're basically the same age.
7:30 pm
>> one guy moves old. the other guy talks concussed. >> that's right. so it's just like, which level of coordination do you prefer, is what i feel like it comes down to. >> it's frustrating because these politicians to me, they've ruined the country. the democrats and the republicans. they fight over every subject. me and jordan ain't never met before. there's no way we would disagree. and i'm just talking right now. >> i can tell. >> there is no way you'll disagree on what? >> on every subject. you are watching tv. they disagree on that? i can meet a random stranger. man, let's have a conversation about something. there are some things we would agree on. we could disagree but the way these politicians have ruined this country, if they want it. maggie talked about it. we like our guy. we hate the other guy. >> i'm going to oppose it just because you came up with it.
7:31 pm
>> no, man. there are some things we agree on and disagree on. let's find a happy medium. you can't hate that you have to pick between being a democrat and republican. i think everybody should be an independent. and then you vote for whoever you want to. our system is broken. our system is broken. >> a lot of people agree with you on that. >> let me ask you a question. we have a couple, wolf blitzer, john king, why is president biden struggling with black people? >> i think that there are a lot of unfulfilled promises from the administration. that's how i feel. when you look at black people, i feel like as a group, we've always put our needs to the side for the greater good. you're always asked to vote for the best candidate even if their platform isn't necessarily benefitting your voter base. at some point, black people are
7:32 pm
like no, we want ours now. i tried to ask biden for reparations at a correspondence dinner when i saw him. >> how did that go over? >> that wasn't the time or place. i really feel like there has to be some degree of connecting. i think every base wants that. that's what we can see on the road. people are concerned about their issue and their issue only. and returning to a voter base in the country. you're supposed to vote for the best candidate for the country. which mean it's not the best for yourself or your group. i think there's still time for biden for black voters. >> you do? >> how do you feel about black people? >> two thumbs up, man. [ laughter ] >> we'll be right back. we'll get your take on that viral emmy moment. to duckduckgo on all your devie
7:33 pm
7:34 pm
7:35 pm
7:36 pm
duckduckgo comes with a built-n engine like google, but it's pi like chrome, but it blocks cooi and creepy ads that follow youa from google and other companie.
7:37 pm
and there's no catch. it's fre. we make money from ads, but they don't follow you aroud join the millions of people taking back their privacy by downloading duckduckgo on all your devices today. welcome, welcome back. you became a viral moment at the emmys. what the hell were you saying? >> unintentionally. i was not saying anything. >> we have evidence. play the clip. >> honestly, the person i always thank, a crazy genius, jon stewart. wherever you are my friend. thank you for calling me up. thank you for asking me to join out this crazy journey. and thank you to everybody else in this category.
7:38 pm
we did it, baby, we did it. >> what were you saying there? >> i said please hire a host. that's all i said. >> do you mean please hire a host or please hire me? >> a host. everybody was on that stage. and the people back in new york, they work hard. i'm happy for them and i'm happy for the daly show and i'm happy what it can be in 2024. let's get a host and get on the road. i wasn't trying to steal the moment. i've apologized to the people i needed to apologize for. i wasn't trying to steal that moment that trevor worked so hard for. it was said in the spirit of excitement. not trying to, the intent was not malicious. it was, let's go. let's do this. >> jordan, i'm going to ask you a question. >> he wants to host the show. yeah. >> obviously, you want to make money. if you're taking time to talk to your audience, what are you trying to accomplish with the
7:39 pm
tour? >> i will say, i love hanging out with this guy. we wanted to go on the road and literally talk to people. we have the best job in the world. we get to call it bs where we see it. and we often time do that from a studio in new york. you go to charlottesville, you go to indianapolis, grand rapids, michigan. we're opening it up to say what do you care about? what is surprising, we're comedians who care a lot about the news and hopefully have a point of view about it. we don't get a lot of questions about what was it like to meet tom cruise. people want to talk about it. it is a space where people want to feel heard and talk to other people about it. we're often surprised, after the show people would say this was cathartic. we can talk about education issues. >> cathartic is the word they use? they're talking to comedians. >> i went to kalamazoo and i did
7:40 pm
a show where i was talking about the news. people talked back to me sxmd we are rarely in places surround by 2,000 other people talking about the things that bother them about the community right now. and we don't create those spaces. it's a sad state of affairs that that happens in a comedy show. it shows a need for community and discussion. >> what do they say about the news? >> i get the feeling they don't believe the news. >> there is not a lot of faith in the news. people can search out the news wherever they get it. >> if you're only listening to one network, and only one point of view, then you believe what you're seeing on that one network and that one point of view. >> and you double down on it. you hold on to your beliefs even if you have doubts. we have a crisis of certainty. i think uncertainty is the only way to have a conversationost f.
7:41 pm
roy, americans never had racism. >> she said it's never been a racist country. if america isn't racist then nikki haley should run under her birth name and see what happens. how about vivek ramaswamy in iowa? yeah. we're not sure about him. too many consonants in your name. >> did people say that? >> if vivek ramaswamy showed up as just gerald, he would have done way better. >> do you really believe that? >> yes, yes. nikki, a single syllable, that's how you got to run. >> nikki is her middle name. >> that's fair. then put that nimarata on there. she understands. you can't hit people too much. >> she didn't just change her name when she got into politics. she's always been nikki for a
7:42 pm
long time. >> i think i see. that she's smart. she's playing to her audience. >> how do you explain that comment? how do you explain her comment about america's has never been racist? >> i think she know her audience doesn't want to hear it. we've created this firestorm around wokism. the audience doesn't want to hear any negativity. don't tear down these statues. she knows her audience doesn't want to hear it. we're playing to the base mob mentality. >> you don't think she believes that. >> she cannot believe that and have been in the state of south carolina. >> i haven't found anyone who agrees with that statement. >> i hope not. >> i hope not, too. another viral moment. the actress delivering a word during her acceptance speech. more on that after the break.
7:43 pm
7:44 pm
7:45 pm
7:46 pm
7:47 pm
before we go, i want to talk about a moment from this week's emmy awards that stood out. she won for outstanding actress in the movie for her performance. the movie was the jeffrey dahmer story. a very heavy topic.
7:48 pm
her speech resonated with a whole lot of people, myself included, because of who she thanked. >> you know who i want to thank? i want to thank me. for believing in me and doing what they said i could not do. and i want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, go on, girl, with your bad self. you did that. >> you did that. we actually have niecy now from dublin, ireland where she's working on her next project. congratulations, congratulations. we're giving you a round of applause. so you should know, you're out of the country but you've become a meme. and i bet you had no idea you would get that kind of reaction. you thanked other people but you also thanked yourself. when i watched you, i said boy, i can't believe she did that. i'm glad she did that. and i would never have the nerve to do that. what were you thinking in that moment?
7:49 pm
>> first of all, the reason why i have these sunglasses on -- >> i was wondering. >> i have been crying all day. i'm just so full, so overwhelmed. i look like one of those teenage girls in the rom com when the boy just broke up with her. that is how i look. happy tears but i like a wreck. so i'm trying to spare your audience. >> okay. i was going to ask you, do you want to leave your sunglasses on in. >> i look a mess. if i could sum the night up in one word, it was magical. i had no idea that my words were taking flight. because after you win, they usher you in the back. you have to do a couple of interviews. you have to take pictures. by the time i came all the way around to come back, the thing was over. and you get ushered into the
7:50 pm
next party so you can get your name engraved on the statue. so i didn't know it was unfolding the way it was until, i don't know. maybe around 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. >> wow! >> when you go to these awards shows, you have that, which i've done many times, you have to have that stupid look on your face when you lose 99% of the time. did you go in? how confident were you going in in. >> you know, i've been to the big show a couple of time, charles. i walked away empty-handed. so you never know how it will go. i looked over at my better half. i am, listen, if they don't call my name, i'm spitting on the ground and we're walking out. >>
7:51 pm
-- to keep it light. but, i was very, very happy when they called my name. >> but why did you think, yourself niecy, this is what i want people to understand? because i so in my or that you did that. as girls, we are raised, you don't want to brag, you don't want to toot your own horn. but you thanked yourself. why? was there something that happened in your life or that -- you know what? i'm going to thank me. >> because i know -- because i know what it cost me. i just know, trying to pull myself to my peers, and going through the stuff that you go through in life, that people don't see. they don't see what happens behind the closed doors. they don't see the pain. they don't see your heartache. all they see is the shiny parts of your life. and it took a long time for me
7:52 pm
to get their, in that moment. and i was proud of myself. i still am. i really am. >> i niecy, i have talked to a lot of young teens in my life, and going over the notes about you, you talked about self esteem. because, i said, you guys spend so much time worrying about what some fools on the internet says about you, i say, it's called self esteem. you are never going to be happy as a person until you are able to look yourself in the mirror. tell me why you think like that. because it was beautiful to listen to when i was going over the notes. >> because, for some reason, we have inverted it. you know? and we look to other people to affirm. mama esteem. that is not what it.
