hello, and welcome to joining us here in the united days, around the world, and streaming us on cne max, i'm rosso church. just ahead, kissing the rain, ron desantis throws his support behind donald trump after the florida governor suspends his campaign. that leaves nikki haley as the last candidate standing between the former president and his third republican nomination ahead of tomorrow's new hampshire primary. despite growing pressure at home and from israel's allies abroad, benjamin netanyahu rejects a plan for hamas to release the remaining hostages in gaza. the controversy over the inauguration of a new temple in india, why the event, which many hindus will celebrate will also be a painful reminder for the country's muslim minority. lies from atlanta, this is
11:02 pm
cnn newsroom with rosemary church. >> we begin this hour with new hampshire's looming republican primary, now just over a day away and a major shakeup in the u.s. presidential race that leaves the gop with just two main contenders, former president donald trump and nikki haley who is hoping she can leverage the granite state moderate republicans and independents. trump has consistently dominated the gop field in polling and in iowa's caucuses he beat his nearest competitor, ron desantis by a margin of nearly 30 points now trump has the endorsement of that former rival. desantis announcing sunday that he is dropping out of the race and during his support behind trump. the former president is doing fine with new hampshire republicans already a new cnn poll finds him with a comfortable 13 point lead over haley cnn's elena train has more now on desantis's surprise
11:03 pm
announcement as well as trump's reaction to his sudden endorsement >> just hours after florida governor ron desantis suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed the former president trump came out on stage in rochester, new hampshire and congratulated him for running what he called a great campaign . he also said that desantis was being, quote, gracious for giving him his endorsement. take a listen to how donald trump put it. >> before we begin i would like to take time to congratulate ron desantis and of course a really terrific person, i have gotten to know his wife, casey, for having run a great campaign for president. he ran a really good campaign, i will tell you. it's not eink it is easy doing the stuff, right? it is not easy. as you know, he left the campaign trail today at 3:00 a.m. and in so doing, he was very gracious that he endorsed me. so i appreciate it.
11:04 pm
i appreciate that, and i also look forward to working with ron and anybody else to defeat crooked joe biden. truck what a difference just a few hours make. i mean, this is a complete 180 from the type of rhetoric we heard donald trump use just this weekend in manchester, new hampshire on saturday trump was criticizing ron desantis and this was also the first time, i want to note, that he has actually referred to the florida governor by his real name instead of the nickname that he has given the florida governor, which is ron desanctimonious but look, i think one thing that we should be watching for is whether or not this endorsement from desantis changes anything in the minds of donald trump. already it appears it has a given the language we heard him use on sunday but over the past year now, donald trump has really viciously gone after ron desantis, attacked very heavily in the lead up to the iowa
11:05 pm
caucuses and part of that was because the campaign was worried about desantis as a rival. the other part was because it was personal. donald trump very much believes that desantis was being disloyal by running for president after trump had endorsed him for florida governor in 2017 and that is where a lot of those attacks stemmed from, according to my conversations with donald trump advisers and his allies. but i think the question now is will his endorsement change the game? will you see ron desantis become a potential surrogate for the trump campaign. i know, as well, from our conversations with trump's team that as of now, there are no plans for desantis to show up on the trail with him but that could change. alanna trained, cnn, rochester, new hampshire. on the campaign trail sunday, nikki haley doubled down on one of her main campaign messages. she is the best option for those who want to avoid a rematch between trump and president joe biden and who don't care for either candidate
11:06 pm
she was also gracious in her comments about ron desantis's excerpt while speaking, take a listen. >> i think ron ran a good race, i noticed personal to get into a race impersonal to get out of a race, he has been a good governor and he added a lot to the campaign and we wish him well. >> when he dropped out, part of what he said was he reminded everybody that he signed a ledge as report the republican nominee, i honor that pledge, he, meaning donald trump has my endorsement because we can't go back to the old republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism that nikki haley represents. that is tough stuff. >> and you know it is interesting because there is no proof to that. these fellas say this because they want people to believe it. but what is amazing to me as they think they can lie to the american people and the american people will believe it. prove it, prove one thing that they have said. prove the fact that donald trump says i want to cut six social security, i've never
11:07 pm
said that. prove that donald trump says, to raise gas taxes, i'm never said or done that. prove that ron desantis says that i'm a corporate whatever he says i am. i've never done that. i was in south carolina, we fought for the people everyday. there's a reason that you don't see the legislature lining up behind me in south carolina. it is because i got them to get them vote on the record. i have vetoed half $1 billion worth of their projects and then you see congress, the reason congress doesn't support us as i push for term limits, i push for mental competency test. they don't give us a budget on time they don't get paid. i don't get that political elite that is what we need to be talking about, not the corporate stuff that they are talking about the fact that they all sighed together against the people is what i am doing. i'm going to continue to fight for the people. there were 14 people in this race and now there are two. i'm going to finish this so joe biden and donald trump are not an issue at all, that we actually put them in the past and we go forward because our country deserves it and americans won, they are tired?
11:08 pm
i don't need have 280-year-old sitting in the white house, we basically got to make sure that we can handle the war situation that we are in, we need to know that they are at the top of the game. we need to know that they can take care of her national security and our economy. right now i don't know if people feel like that with either one so that is why we give them a choice. the what is your message to ron desantis is a workers who are still out there? us to start a new hampshire, our latest poll this morning he was at 6%, so we are not talking about a big slice of the electorate, but they are out there. he just endorsed donald trump, what is your message to them about why they should vote for you? >> i think that they love america and i think that they want a new generational leader. and so i am telling them that i am that new generational leader. and i am the conservative that can get it done. >> larry savage who is the founder and the director for the center for politics at the university of virginia, he joined the now from
11:09 pm
charlottesville. always good to have you with us. >> thank you, rosemary. please nikki haley is now the sole challenger up against donald trump after ron desantis ended his presidential campaign sunday and endorsed trump. but she is fast losing the support she enjoyed not so long ago in new hampshire and as desantis bailed out he attacked her, does this mark the end of her run, too? >> if she loses on tuesday, it almost certainly works, the end of her run. now she may continue through south carolina, she would be hesitant to do it because she would not want to lose her home state, that is really difficult to find people. but for all practical purposes, once desantis left and once the other candidates were knocked out of the race, it was trump's to lose and trump's to lose a significantly and he is not going to lose it. >> and he is very involved in it now, isn't he? back to desantis, why do you think he endorsed trump, given it wasn't so long ago that he attacked those who kissed the ring and then did it himself,
11:10 pm
didn't he? trump commending him, what is in it for desantis? what is he after here? i guess he saw some good examples of ring kissing and decided to imitate it. who knows what was going through his mind other than the fact he certainly wants to run the next time. whether he will be credible as a candidate after this disaster is run, remember, he was originally supposed to be trump's main challenger and most of the establishment and the republican party was a betting on him. and his campaign crashed and burned. this was really a disgraceful enterprise in so many different ways. but in his mind, at least right now, as he is coming to terms with the demise of his dream, he is thinking about running in 2028. well-being associated with nikki haley is not going to help you because this party has already become the donald trump party or the maga party and it will be, in all likelihood,
11:11 pm
even more so as the years go on. so being associated with nikki haley is not a good thing for ron desantis future ambitions. >> so could he serve as a surrogate to perhaps for trump, do you think? >> sure, although florida is very likely to be won by trump, anyway. i don't think he necessarily needs desantis and there are some that are feelings there. they will say good things in public but in private it is already obvious that they are not the close friends they once were, political allies, i don't think they were ever friends but political allies, and they are both there in florida. so i think while he will be used in trump, he will use anybody in a campaign. i wouldn't count on a cabinet decision. please so how did desantis's campaign go so terribly wrong after starting up pretty strongly? >> you know, sometimes you can lose by winning. desantis once such a big a
11:12 pm
second term victory, just swamped what other republicans had done and secured a landslide, really, in places where democrats normally don't do well. when you score a landslide like that, you say to yourself partly because everybody else is saying it to you, boy, you're terrific, the greatest thing that has ever come down the pike and you start believing your news clippings. i think that was the heart of it and the secondary part of this, with all due respect to desantis, who is clearly a smart guy and he has had a lot of experience and all the rest. pretty doesn't have the kind of personality that sells in politics. for one thing, you genuinely have to like people to succeed in politics. running for president, the light is on you constantly and that light reveals who you really are. and people didn't particularly take to the

israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu is out right rejecting hamas's demands for releasing the remaining hostages in gaza. he says hamas wants the war to end and withdrawal of troops and palestinian prisoners released. >> let it be clear, i utterly reject the hamas monsters capitulation terms. >> translator: were we to agree to this, our soldiers would have fallen in vain, were we to agree to this, we would not be
11:19 pm
able to ensure the security of our citizens, we would be unable to save the restore the evacuees to their homes and the next october 7th would only be a question of time. >> meanwhile, families and friends of israeli hostages held a rally near mr. netanyahu's home in jerusalem on sunday again calling for their release. this comes as the wall street journal says the u.s., egypt, and qatar want israel to join a new phase of talks with hamas. sebastian joins us now live from london. good morning to you, claire. so what more are you learning about these potential talks and how vulnerable is benjamin netanyahu right now as domestic sentiment turns against him with his calls for a leadership change. >>, good morning, i think the bottom line here is that it has now been almost two months since the start of that last truce combined with hostages releases. since then we have seen the death toll in gaza go up by more than 10,000 people.
11:20 pm
so clearly you see domestically the pressure on netanyahu is mounting, if anything, his response has been to toughen his stance publicly the issue of talks to release hostages and some kind of truce but on the issue of what gaza will look like after the war, reiterating over the weekend, comments that he also said last week that he doesn't see any future for tuesday. he said all the territory west of jordan and being very open about the fact that that is at odds with the u.s. position, the u.s. has been publicly pushing for a two state solution, netanyahu saying that sometimes you have to even say no to some of your closest friends, so clearly he is setting up his store there but behind the scenes, this wall street journal reports suggest according to officials briefed on the talks that they are at least engaging in talks
11:21 pm
with hamas which have been blocked by qatar, u.s., and he did and those brokered countries are pushing for something that could be even bigger than what we saw the end of november, a more sustained, perhaps, pause and fighting in exchange for the release and some kind of phased fashion of all the hostages. we're not close to a deal at this point we have been in positions where the elements of these talks have leaked out before many times. i really mean that a deal is on the cards but certainly this report suggests that there are at least engaging, is netanyahu vulnerable? yes, i think he was vulnerable before the war and certainly he has been facing mounting pressure in the last few weeks mounting calls for promoting accusations, i should say, that he is not just balancing as he says the goals of bringing the hostages home with eradicating hamas but also balancing his own medical survival in there. and of course publicly saying that he is at odds with the u.s. is also politically risky.

rosemary? >> thanks to claire sebastian with that live report from london. the palestine red crescent society says it received a total of 185 aid trucks in gaza on sunday. the trucks are carrying food, water, medical supplies, and other relief assistance israeli officials are offering different numbers, saying that 260 humanitarian aid trucks into the enclave, which would make it the highest number of trucks in a single day since october 7th before the conflict between four to 500 trucks entered gaza with supplies. but regardless of the number of trucks that did get in, the need for food, medicine, and other critical supplies is enormous. in the death cole continues to climb, according to the hamas -controlled health ministry in gaza, more than 25,000 palestinians have been killed in the enclave since the war began the vast majority of

11:32 pm
what he thinks about nikki haley's chances going forward. >> i'm surprised only that it happened in january but i a couple of days you could have seen this coming. but nikki haley, does she have a chance? sure? does she have a good chance? almost certainly not if you believe the polls and she is going to get beaten in new hampshire and her own state in south carolina. could she pulled multiple inside straits? full coming out in new hampshire and south carolina? i just think that is so remote as to be almost impossible. not totally impossible but for the improbable. >> just to pick up on this question of tactics and strategy and how ron desantis and nikki haley, they sort of gave it the juice there right at the very end and started going after trump a little bit here and there but it was sort of nibbling around the edges and
11:33 pm
what did you make of that? is that also terribly not surprising? had they gone after them? >> i don't know if it would have made a difference but it was 2016 all over again where all of these people ran against donald trump on the assumption that at some point, trump would falter or be convicted of something and they would be the heirs to the trump voters and it just doesn't work that way anymore. it is a cult of personality. doesn't scale or transfer and they were also afraid of running against him that they basically just ran with him and the implosion of the desantis campaign is no surprise. a lot of folks realized that to know ron desantis on the trail, i don't mean this in a personal sense but for voters who met him, the more they met in the more they didn't like and that he just had no compelling

welcome back to viewers here in north america. returning to our top story this hour, former south carolina governor, nikki haley, is now the last republican candidate standing against former president donald trump after order governor ron desantis suspended his 2024 bit or the white house with that announcement coming ahead of tuesday's crucial new hampshire primary. desantis endorsed trump, as he dropped out of the race his departure comes after his second-place anish in the iowa caucuses last week trump has reacted saying desantis ran a quote, really good campaign. is joe biden's campaign is closely monitoring the contest as they ed closer to a possible one-on-one contest with former president donald trump. in an kevin love tech has details >> ron desantis's decision to drop out by the republican
11:47 pm
contest didn't come as much of a surprise to president biden's campaign advisers but it certainly does bring them closer to this one-on-one contest with the former president, donald trump in fact, in their statement on sunday, democrats didn't really go after desantis much. in particular they were much more focused on president trump, saying that desantis was the latest member of the republican party to all in line behind the original maga brand and that he had pinned his entire campaigns hopes on the same extreme maga agenda, both donald trump and nikki haley are still running on? at the end of the day, president biden's team really do view trump as the most likely republican nominee? of course, polls bear that out and they have long sort of looked past ron desantis and his fellow republican candidates to the general election, to this contest with president trump. and they are very eager for this to become a one-on-one contest. they do have internal research that shows many undecided voters just don't believe that

president trump will become the republican nominee. and until that happens, it is very hard for them to make this choice argument. this contrast argument when it comes to president biden. they are very eager to do that. much harder to do when it is just president biden and a republican candidate in the abstract. they think it will be much easier to get voters engaged and to make their own argument for president biden what it is president trump as the nominee or at least the likely nominee now next week you will see president biden and kamala harris really ramping up their campaign activity. they will appear in their first joint appearance in northern virginia on tuesday, trying to counter program the new hampshire primary, their focus there and over the next several days will be on reproductive rights on abortion, this is pegged the anniversary of the original roe versus wade supreme court decision. what you will hear president biden do is make the argument
11:49 pm
that president trump is as much responsible for the overturning of roe versus wade, through his three supreme court nominations as anyone else. in effect, that is an argument that president trump has made himself on the campaign trail and certainly president biden's team believes this is a galvanizing issue for voters and something that will help turn out voters come next year's election. kevin love tech, cnn, traveling with president biden in delaware. clap with desantis out of the race, the latest cnn polling shows trump has now widened his lead in new hampshire over nikki haley gary tuchman spoke to voters in the granite state ahead of tuesday's republican primary. >> we came down to downtown portsmouth, new hampshire with two specific questions for people who plan to vote in tuesday's republican primary. both questions that were asked on cnn's entrance poll in iowa. the first question that was asked to people, is donald trump fit for the presidency if

have some moisture moving in and our next storm system and that can mean an icy start. look at it really flourishing as a go to the morning commute for parts of arkansas, missouri, and oklahoma city and could linger until the afternoon on monday and that could mean some slick roads through a lot of the day all that moisture starts to make its way to the north, maybe some snow mixing and in chicago and we have some heavy rain as we start out the work week along the gulf coast as we continue to pump some of that moisture inland here's a look at those ice accumulations. a lot of us can see up to a quarter of an inch through ice of most of missouri back into oklahoma and then northwest arkansas, as well. there's a little spot above little rock that could have half an inch of ice possible, that could really weigh down power lines and certainly cause problems on the roads then on the warm and wet side of this we are looking at a flood threat that will play out for the next couple of days where we are looking at that slight risk of flooding from eastern texas across louisiana, mississippi and alabama through wednesday were several inches

high wind alerts with gusts up to 100 miles per hour, possible in some areas due to storm geisha the windy conditions, even caused some shaky landings at london's heathrow airport with tilting planes from side to side as they came in for a landing and this reddish airways flight was even forced to reattempt its landing after the lane tilted and just one wheel made contact with the ground. more than 100 flights were canceled and more than 300 others were delayed at heathrow on sunday. in the nfl playoffs, the kansas city chiefs are headed to a familiar spot, their sixth straight afc championship game. facing the buffalo bills in new york on sunday, chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes found some more playoff magic, connecting with the star titan, travis kelce, 42 touchdowns in the game. kelsey's girlfriend, taylor swift, clearly impressed.
